Paul Manafort is being kept in solitary confinement in order to "guarantee his safety," his lawyer said in court documents filed this week.
"He is locked in his cell for at least 23 hours per day (excluding visits from his attorneys)." https://t.co/sRbTkmK3mG
— Kyle Griffin (@kylegriffin1) July 6, 2018
… In a brief filed Thursday, Downing wrote that Manafort is unable to adequately prepare for his two upcoming trails, the first of which starts later this month, while locked up. Manafort’s lawyers also argued that the witness-tampering charges that landed him in jail are not so bad because they did not include threats of physical violence. So they’re asking that Manafort be released.
Prosecutors from special counsel Robert Mueller’s office were having none of it. In its own filing, Mueller’s team said Manafort’s attempt to tamper with witnesses is “no less damaging to the justice system when committed through covert corrupt persuasion than through overt violence.” Last month, Manafort was accused of trying to influence witness testimony while he was under house arrest.
They also wrote that Manafort does not deserve special treatment since the limitations he’s facing “are common to defendants incarcerated pending trial.”…
Spoiler Alert: It's for his own safety because Manafort owes tens of millions to, and knows countless secrets about, an ex-Ukrainian autocrat who once poisoned a guy's soup and a Russian oligarch well known to make his problems disappear at the pointy end of a prison shank. https://t.co/Snh55CttjL

Maybe the loyalist Trumplodytes are trying to get Manafort… eliminated with extreme prejudice?
In the early 1990s Manafort received hundreds of thousands of dollars from a front group for Pakistani Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) to divert attention from the organization's support for terrorism. https://t.co/3ej7SaVtoz

It appears that the story about the delay in the hearing is not entirely accurate. The judge was talking about the hearing happening on Monday already, probably because the government didn’t have its act together and the information necessary for the hearing wasn’t going to get to the ACLU until Saturday night. It appears to be true that the government lawyer said he was dog-sitting, but only after the judge had suggested Monday morning.

The US dairy industry is in transition right now and has been for 10-15 years.
The industry is rationalizing from smaller family farms to larger agribusinesses. Many fewer dairy farms, but much larger production. As a result there has been negative price pressure on milk and the gate price has fallen. Production is moving from the north and northeast to larger, more efficient operations in California, Idaho and Texas.
Basically the family dairy farm is in trouble and they are rapidly being made obsolete. That’s the pressure that the farmers are feeling, not Canadian tariffs.

Whether the balance tips when, as @? ?? Goku (aka Amerikan Baka) ? ? says, people’s lives are so clearly materially worse that they turn on Трамп, or simply stay at home on Election Day, or (perhaps more likely) turn to yet another Pied Piper, I don’t see how the situation can possibly be stable.
With all due respect to you and Deus X. Machina, Трамп’s approval ratings have not (yet) had to deal with an afflicted economy. We haven’t yet seen what happens when Trumpkins find themselves hurting in an economic downturn of Трамп’s making … but if the tariff wars that Трамп has started aren’t tamped out real soon, we’re going to find out.
Dems don’t have to persuade all Трамп supporters, Dems merely need to peel off or demotivate sufficient numbers to win elections, which is already happening if Siegfried is correct. (Although it might be more accurate to say that Трамп is more effective at peeling off his supporters than Dems are.)
All that said, it seems to me that even if Трамп is impeached and the GOP winds up in the trashcan of history, we should take time for some Deep Thinking about the fact that 40% of the American electorate are just peachy with a fascist authoritarian ignorant corrupt bigot in the Oval Office.

@Ruckus: I was speaking about sanctions. That said, in regard to both, they are basically an attempt to leverage economic power until the target of either the sanctions or the tariffs cannot endure the pain inflicted anymore and acquiesces to the terms of the state imposing the sanctions or tariffs. The problem for the President is that, unlike the President or congressional Republicans, as well as state level Republican office holders, XI and the members of his government do not have to ever stand for reelection.

@At sunset the tiercel flew above the marsh, pursuing a wisp of snipe. They drummed away down wind, like stone skidding across ice.: A fair point.
That said, it’s hard to weaponize “everyone who is sitting in jail or prison right now” for a political campaign against Трамп.
Had the action happened as originally I saw it reported, the story would be as effective a campaign message as “We’re Democrats: we won’t rape your kids”, and much more civil (should anyone care.)
I care about weaponization.
Here’s another story one could get angry about: prosecutors dropped charges against the last of the Inauguration Day protesters today. Why be angry? Because those fscking prosecutors cost circa 200 peeps as much as 18 months of their lives, and unless they all had pro bono legal representation (I don’t know, but I doubt it), they’re also left with a boatload of debt, all for exercising their alleged 1st Amendment rights.
Y’know something? The prosecution worked with Project Veritas, James O’Keefe’s sewer agitprop outfit, and used Project Veritas vids.
And that’s not all. The prosecution edited some of the vids they used … and failed to disclose that editing to the defense.
There’s a mention in the column – sorry, no link, but I think it’s at WaPost – that the judge sanctioned the lead prosecutor, but it wasn’t clear to me what sanctions were imposed.
I can’t see how to weaponize that story, either … but I deeply deeply care because I’ve had relatives arrested for protesting. Multiple times. Cops and prosecutors are playing games with the public… they can stop a protest in its tracks, charge everyone with criminal trespass or criminal conspiracy or whatever … and that’s a win. If the charges get thrown out – as they usually are, 3 months, 6 months, 18 months later, hey … the cops accomplished what they set out to do.
We don’t have 1st Amendment rights; we can only rent 1st Amendment rights, and the cops and prosecutors get to determine the rental fees.

I was thinking along the lines of education. Most of the country has no idea how the gummint works, or what’s in the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution. Shared values are important. @Ruckus: I don’t have a problem with that.
This is long ago and far away, but one of the short stories in Asimov’s “I, Robot” posits the election of a supposed robot to the presidency of the World Government. “North American” businessmen are pissed as hell when the excruciatingly fair president doesn’t favor North American interests, and decide to bring down the president by screwing up supply chains in North America.
What happens instead is that the rest of the world, finding North American businesses unreliable, steers business away from North American industries, weakening North America’s influence in the world, which makes it easier for the president to bring up standards of living in the underdeveloped world.
It’s been 50 years since I read the story, so I probably have the details wrong, but …
… Трамп reminds me of that story.
Incidentally, the story never comes out and says flatly that the president is a robot …
… and in fact the story in no way depends on the president being a robot. It’s not even a McGuffin.
