giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:
For quartering large bodies of armed troops among us:
For protecting them, by a mock Trial from punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States:
For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world:
For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent:
For depriving us in many cases, of the benefit of Trial by Jury:
For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences:
For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies
For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments:
For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.

That quartering troops thing was really a big deal, wasn’t it?

The Republicans sure focused on that one. The “us” in there being themselves and all their super wealthy owners.

@efgoldman: Imagine coming home from work and finding a pair of smelly, muddy, young Englishmen — with guns and ammo — sitting at your table and demanding dinner and beds for the night. And they’re going to be quartered there indefinitely. You’re paid to host them, but you can’t turn them out if they shoot your kids or burn your house down. If you poison them, they’ll hang you and send your wife and kids to the workhouse. If you simply leave, they’ll confiscate your property, and give it to someone who WILL put up with their bullshit.

Yeah, um, didn’t the Quebecois prefer French law to English? Might as well complain about them being filthy Papists too.

Yeah, well, other than the billeting troops thing, it’s amazing how much of this list of grievances seems pertinent, 242 years later. (*lolsob*)

Thanks for this, Adam.

Release of this info by FBI or some US org like that to show Jordan they have plenty on him and stunts like his stupid yelling at Rosenstein aren’t a smart move? Oppo research released by a competitor for the Speaker of the House position since Jordan was supposedly in the running? Just random timing?

@Yarrow: Boehner.
I know the conspiracy theories have already started that since THE OSU hired Perkins Coie this is clearly the work of Fusion GPS and obviously part of the ongoing thing begun with the Steele Dossier. But quite simply this is an Ohio story. And the most powerful Republican in Ohio, even in retirement, is Boehner. And Boehner hasn’t forgotten what Jordan did to him when Boehner was the speaker.

I think we’re just lucky that the wrestlers, seeing what’s happened at Michigan State, their “Dr. Nasser” who assaulted female athletes, they realized that “Doctor” Strauss was sexually abusing them!
They came to him about a sprain and he “needed” to feel their genitals, for some “medical” reason, like he liked strong young male genitals a whole lot. And their coach knew about it, and didn’t care about those young men, at all.
The whole Big 10 seems to have been eaten up with sexual abuse! Win, win, who cares about what happens in the little treatment rooms, if you’re winning. PSU, MSU, OSU, what’s going to fall next?
Hopefully Jim Jordan falls hard~!!~

@oldster: I agree with Juicer who speculated that there may be huge percentage of athletes who were sexually abused during their college careers. It appears that abuse is the norm, not the exception. I wonder the effects it has had on athletes’ behavior during and after their careers. (Apologies for not remembering who posted).

@Yarrow: Maybe some of the right people learned something from the way Al Franken was taken out shortly after excellent questioning on a senate committee hearing. Of course, this was easier because they didn’t have to make shit up about this Joe Paterno of Ohio.

@Kathleen:
Sorry–my post was unclear. I was not referring to the new sexual abuse scandal involving Republican Jim Jordan, but rather to Adam’s quoting the complaints from the Declaration.
And I in turn was referring to another line from the earlier part of the Declaration:
“But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.”
I have always liked that use of the word “train,” which (obviously) did not mean a locomotive engine that runs on rails, but rather a series or sequence of connected objects. Closer to the “train” of a dress. To that extent, a “train” is what “trails”, i.e. what drags behind or is dragged behind.
Anyhow–sorry to have made myself unclear.

@Omnes Omnibus: Do you know that there was a real sanyasi rebellion against East India Company’s rule in Bengal in late 18th century. It was immortalized in the Bengali novel, Anand Math, which also had the first anthem of rebellion, Vande Mataram
I bow to thee, mother, written about a hundred years after the rebellion in 1882.
Of course fighting against the Brits while they starved you to death makes you villain/thug in British telling of history, which probably inspired Indiana Jones.
