LOL! Nothing Matters (Open Thread)

In the thread below, on the topic of Miller and Nielsen getting jeered at MEXICAN restaurants, one of y’all speculated that their choice of cuisine was deliberate trolling. I’ll admit I didn’t find that very convincing until I saw this:

Yeah, it’s a multi-level trolling operation. Not only is this humanitarian mission from Third Lady Bountiful 100% bullshit, she’s rubbing our noses in that fact. Fuck her. Fuck the whole rotten bunch.

ETA: Apparently not fake, but changed tops before meetings, as one does.

Wow. But as Melania says, “When they go low, we go high.”

I am not going to expend a lot of time on Melania either way. She is not responsible for executing Trump’s miserable policies.

Also, I resist this entire use of Melania and Ivanka as maternal figures. It’s too much like the role of matrons in ancient Rome. Little formal power, but allowed to appeal to the emperor and to work behind the scenes on behalf of supplicants. Even if she means well, she will end up being exploited by her husband and his vile ministers.

Urban Dictionary definition of Goat Rodeo:

    Goat Rodeo
A situation that is hopelessly fucked up. The worst of three stages of goat-ness. First is the Goat Rope, defined else where.

Then there is the utilitraian Goat Fuck. This normally requires a serious amount of work to unfuck.

Lastly, there is the Goat Rodeo. The worst of the three, it is beyond even profanity. It describes a situation that involves many individuals screw ups, and implies that the fuck up is already well underway, meaning that there is no hope in stopping the mess. Usually said with a defeated tone:

But starting around 1972, the city of Austin, Texas became host to a growing community of musicians, entrepreneurs, journalists, and fans who saw country music as a part of their collective heritage and sought to merge it with countercultural ideals to forge a distinctly Texan counterculture. Progressive country music-a hybrid of country music and rock-blossomed in this growing Austin community, as it played out the contradictions at work among its residents. The music was at once firmly grounded in the traditional Texan culture in which they had been raised, and profoundly affected by their newly radicalized, convention-flouting ways.In Cosmic Cowboys and New Hicks: The Countercultural Sounds of Austin’s Progressive Country Music Scene, Travis Stimeling connects the local Austin culture and the progressive music that became its trademark. He presents a colorful range of evidence, from behavior and dress, to newspaper articles, to personal interviews of musicians. Along the way, Stimeling uncovers parodies of the cosmic cowboy image that reinforce the longing for a more peaceful way of life, but that also recognize an awareness of the muddled, conflicted nature of this counterculture identity. “

I must demur. That she held those two jobs, is neither here nor there. Neither here nor there. The prostitute has nothing to be ashamed of; it is the john who is ashamed, and rightly should be. No, her sin is far graver: she married a monster, and when that monster began his depredations on the American body politic, and the bodies of innocent children especially, she offered him her support.

All she had to do was stay away in NYC or VA or MD or wherever. Life her best life with her son, her parents, and her pool boy or security guard lover or whatever. That’s all she had to do.

That’s pretty goddamn fucking disingenuous. Like it or not, fair or not, symbolism is important and the First Lady (not just Melania, but any FLOTUS) by nature of her position is always going to come under exhaustive scrutiny. And Melania’s a model. She knows this at a cellular level. She couldn’t have not known that there would be intense media and public interest in that scrawled message across her back. Hell, the commentariat went nuts for three days when she wore a blouse with a “pussy” bow at the debate right after the Access Hollywood tape was released, or whether the big white hat she wore during the Macrons’ visit this spring was a way to keep Donald at a distance. She chose that $39 jacket deliberately, she wore it in front of the cameras deliberately, and for her spokesbot to now say “Oooh oooh oooh, why are you paying attention to her wardrobe!?!?” is just too coy and cute by half.

Luckily, geological surveys have show there is no more suitable part of Mt. Rushmore available which is stable and solid enough for a carving. What’s there now had to be modified, adjusted and begun anew due to unstable formations.

Jefferson came next. Workers began carving next to Washington’s right shoulder, but eventually found that the granite was insufficiently stable. Borglum ordered the partially formed face to be blasted off the mountain, and they started over on the opposite side of Washington.

As progress continued, plans had to be adjusted and abandoned according to the suitability of the rock. Lincoln’s head was moved from its original planned position and placed where Borglum had intended to carve a massive inscription. Source

ATLANTA — A Black doctor is upset at a man who she says racially profiled her when he blocked her from entering the community that she has lived in for about eight years.

A part of the nearly 30-minute exchange was captured on camera.

A police report indicates that Nnenna Aguocha stated she was attempting to enter the Buckhead Townhome community after just coming off an overnight shift

when another property owner stopped her at the gate entrance. She said he parked his car under the gate arm and refused to move forward to let her in, despite her repeated requests.

“He got out of the car and threatened to call the police on me because I was trespassing,” she said in the video recording taken at the scene. “This is racial profiling at its finest.”

Ms Ardern was admitted to a hospital in the city of Auckland early on Thursday morning, four days after her due date. The 37-year-old has passed on her duties to Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters while she takes six weeks of maternity leave. However, she said she would be consulted on significant issues and would continue to read cabinet papers during her time away.

I told her I understood, but if she did have any older people she cared about, I asked her to consider how she’d feel if they were not able to get medical care they needed because of her boss’s vote. I said we all have choices in life and she has chosen to work for someone who wants to hurt old people and vulnerable people. That she should think about where she is and what she has chosen to do and decide for herself if that’s what she wants to support. That she has to live with that choice.

@sukabi: @Mnemosyne: @lgerard: Melania, in general, doesn’t seem to want to have anything to do with Trump, but it’s clear that because of whatever hold he has on her (Barron, money, blackmail?), she will do what she is ordered to do. And she was clearly told to go to Texas to look “compassionate” in front of the children’s cages, and confirm that everything was really quite comfortable there for them. But no one gave her an order regarding what to wear, so she used her bit of discretion to send a message to Trump. I don’t think she gives a rat’s ass about immigrant children or their families either, but that was meant for her husband.

    Kay says:

Meet the Brownie of Trump’s Katrina:

President Donald Trump’s zero-tolerance border enforcement policy has thrust thousands of migrant children into the care of a single health agency led by an anti-abortion crusader with little background in refugee resettlement.
The separation strategy — which Trump moved to reverse Wednesday amid growing furor — is raising fresh questions about whether HHS’ Office of Refugee Resettlement has the leadership or resources to properly care for and reunify more than 2,300 children scattered in shelters across the nation.
The office’s director, Scott Lloyd, has scant expertise resettling refugees in a career largely devoted to promoting Catholic causes, including rolling back abortion rights and protecting religious minorities in the Middle East from persecution.
A former attorney at the Knights of Columbus, Lloyd wrote reports to the State Department and Congress about the plight of religious minorities in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Jordan. But he did not work with or resettle migrants, according to a December 2017 deposition conducted by the American Civil Liberties Union during a court case over the abortion rights of unaccompanied minors.
By contrast, his predecessor Robert Carey, who led the office during the last two years of the Obama administration, had decades of experience managing refugees‘ issues, including 15 years in resettlement and migration at the International Rescue Committee.

The director of HHS is (rightfully) saying they’re just caretakers of the children who are in custody- that Brownie here is in charge of the logistics.

She selected one and immediately named it “Lipstick” or “Lips” for short. When her trainer asked her why that name, Koko signed that it was because the little kitten had a bright pink nose and mouth, as though she had smeared lipstick all over her muzzle. LOL! I always thought (and still do think) that Koko exhibited some extremely sophisticated cognitive and linguistic abilities with that nomenclature.

@Calouste: Melanoma claims Slovene, Serbo-Croatian, English, French, German & Italian. Slovene is in fact a separate language, but Serbian/Croatian/Bosnian/Montenegrin are effectively dialects of the same tongue – what used to be called Serbo-Croatian (srpskohrvati, or hrvatosrpski in Croatia). The Croats have been sponsoring the use of some oddball grammatical constructions as justification for Croatian being distinct from Serbian, but in fact the difference between these two main variations is <100 words (e.g., chleb [S] = kruh [Cr], bread), one syllable (-ije- inserted into some Croatian words, e.g., reka [S] => rijeka [Cr], river), and two alphabets (Croatian uses the Roman alphabet with diacritical marks whereas Serbian is customarily written in a Cyrillic similar but not identical to that of Russian).

In the former Yugoslavia (“Land of the South Slavs”) there were 4 main languages in use: Serbo-Croatian, Slovene, Macedonian (claimed as “hillbilly Bulgarian” by, guess who, Bulgarians), and Shqip (Albanian, primarily in Kosovo). /tmi

That said, it’s really hard to imagine any time when it would be appropriate for her to wear it in public (and, frankly, she’s not really the target age demographic for something like that, either – it plays better on a 20-something).

JFC. They’re not winding down, they’re planning for EXPANDING the camps.

The Pentagon is assessing how — and where — to house as many as 20,000 unaccompanied migrant children on American military bases, a spokesman said on Thursday.

In a Pentagon statement, Lt. Col. Michael Andrews said officials from the Department of Health and Human Services have so far visited three military bases in Texas and one in Arkansas as the Trump administration seeks to provide temporary shelter for unaccompanied children entering the United States.

Colonel Andrews indicated that no decisions have been made. “It doesn’t mean any or all children would be housed there,” he said of the four bases that are being studied.

The Pentagon and Health and Human Services Department ”are working closely to determine the requirements and timing for support,” Colonel Andrews said.

Europe Strikes Back Against Trump Tariffs as Global Trade War Escalates

Via the FTFNYT. Friday news dumpster starting early.

The European Union fought back on Friday against the Trump administration’s tariffs, slapping penalties on an array of American products that target the president’s political base, like bourbon, motorcycles and orange juice.

The European counterattack on $3.2 billion of goods, a response to the administration’s measures on steel and aluminum imports, adds another front to a trade war that has engulfed allies and adversaries around the world. China and Mexico have already retaliated with their own tariffs, and Canada, Japan and Turkey are readying similar offensives.

The risk of escalation is high since Mr. Trump has promised even more tariffs. Taking aim at German car manufacturers, Trump has started an investigation into automobile imports to determine whether they pose a national security concern, the same justification used for his metal tariffs.

Now is a good time to have a ready supply of cash immediately available. Everything is escalating.

The majority of children sent to New York are believed to have been taken at the border after traveling north with their relatives from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, where countless families have fled poverty and gang violence.

On Wednesday, city officials announced that children had been sent to New York over the last two months and were placed with social service agencies that have contracts with the federal government.

City officials first learned that children were being sent to New York after a relative of a Honduran child asked a friend to contact Mayor Bill de Blasio. At first, it seemed he was one of dozens. Speaking on Wednesday afternoon outside Cayuga Centers in Harlem, Mr. de Blasio said 350 children had passed through the center; 239 of them were still in Cayuga’s care. I walked by my TV-on-mute earlier today and saw Melania The Stiff, sitting like an antique wooden indian while some guy sitting next to her yapped and yapped in her frozen froze. And, by all appearances, he yapped very earnestly. I stared for a while, during which time she did not move a muscle, other than to turn her neck sideways when someone else began to yap at her.

No, indeed, Melania does not care. I’d be willing to bet Yapping Man knew that perfectly well, too. Which made his earnest act all the more laughable. And Melania is made to look all the more stone cold ugly for her pretense.
