My husband has this entire week off, but I have to work. We did our motorcycle trip over a three-day weekend, but he’s doing a staycation thing the rest of this week and just puttering around the house.
From this experience, I’ve concluded that if either of us is ever able to retire (doubtful), we better do it at the same time. He’s driving me fucking nuts.

water it extra. the evaporation, both from the ground and the leaves, will help.
if you need to, fill a jug with a few small weep holes at the bottom and leave it next to it to keep the soil sufficiently damp. maybe wrap something around it so the sun doesn’t overheat the water.

@TenguPhule: I tried the Impossible Burger (vegan) at a restaurant a while back, and it was pretty damned good.
schrodingers_cat
@TenguPhule: Making vegetarian food taste like meat is a losing battle. Why not enjoy vegetables and grains for what they are. One can cook a fully vegetarian (or vegan) meal which is delicious and is nutritionally well balanced.
TenguPhule
@Betty Cracker: I’ll take your word for it.

Some people really like the taste but not the guilt. The Free market acts accordingly.

Amir Khalid
@TenguPhule:
I have never understood the disguise-it-as-meat school of vegan cuisine. It seems like veganism for vegans who really want meat. The thing disguised as meat never tastes quite like meat and so always disappoints. Wouldn’t it be better to embrace the fact that it is not meat and take pride in being a vegan?
TenguPhule
@Amir Khalid:
Well yeah, that’s what it is. People who ethically object to meat but really really enjoy the taste and flavor.
Personally, I think its more likely that vat grown meats will be the solution to that, not trying to make fake meat from plants and fungi.
Roger Moore
@TenguPhule:
IMO, food substitutes in general, and meat substitutes specifically, are a terrible mistake. It’s incredibly rare to get an adequate substitute, and an inadequate one just leaves you craving the original more. You’re much better off trying to find a food that does its best to be itself rather than pretending to be something else. There are plenty of vegetarian and vegan cuisines out there, and you’ll be much more satisfied eating them than fake meat.

true, but not as much when it comes to a veggie burger, since it’s basically just a sandwich. tho that part in the linked story about the company that’s come up with some way of making a veggie burger ‘bleed’ like a hamburger is just totally messed up in so many ways.
vegan bacon is one of those things that just should not be.
schrodingers_cat
@Amir Khalid: We are in agreement.@TenguPhule: I am not judging, what they are trying seems difficult to achieve. Taste of bacon without using bacon and so on. And noting that vegetarian food can be delicious on its own without pretending to be meat.
schrodingers_cat
@indycat32: Pictures please, they sound adorable.
Betty Cracker
@Amir Khalid: Never been a vegan, but I was a vegetarian for about five years or so, and I missed the heck out of burgers, BBQ and bacon the entire time. I could make wonderful vegetarian meals — I still can and do! But if you’re the sort who never loses that hankering for a certain thing that is forbidden under your new diet, I can see where advances in fake meat would be exciting, and the fake meat products are typically more healthy and sustainably produced, so there’s that.
TenguPhule
@schrodingers_cat:
Yes. But again, some people have really hard cravings for meat flavors at times. Not necessarily all the time, but sometimes its just the one thing you just really want that particular day.

Reporting in from VA-10 in which we Dems voted for Jennifer Wexton to take on the challenge of unseating Barbara Comstock this fall. Apparently (seen somewhere on a friend’s feed on FB), we had higher turnout yesterday than the Rs did for their primary, but then again, that could be because Comstock didn’t have any serious challengers. In any case, here’s hoping Wexton can win and we can take back the House.
Aleta
@oatler.: You probably already do this, but water very early or very late in the day, and at night. So that the sun can’t heat the water on the leaves and damage them. And shade w/ a piece of fabric screen to preserve the leaves?
Don’t know if this works for tomatoes, but sometimes I dig a small crater around the plant that can be filled with water at night like a little lake. It directs the water slowly to around the plant instead of running off. (Method is for new trees, but can also work for plants in drought.) Or use pieces of tubing w holes punched in, stuck down in the soil near the base of the plant, and fill at the top with water after it cools down in the evening.

In my area, once the night time temps are above 70 degrees F (generally, can vary slightly by variety of plant) the tomatoes will bloom but not set fruit. If it’s that hot in Arizona and also doesn’t cool at night, you might not get much of a crop. If that’s the case, it could be for the night time temp reason.

Speaking of vegetarian (but not vegan) food, the frozen BBQ “ribs” from Morningstar Farms are really good. It helps that they remembered to add liquid smoke to the sauce, and they got a really good texture for their fake meat. @schrodingers_cat: You need a higher percentage of green stuff than brown stuff (about 60 green/40 brown). Water it so it stays fairly damp and turn it every few days at the beginning. After that once a week or even less. Takes about three months during warm weather if you’re actively involved like that, but longer during cool/cold weather.
It’s not that complicated, but it can be frustrating. Lots of green stuff in summer (grass clippings, etc.) and lots of brown stuff in fall (leaves). I’ll pick up bagged leaves from neighbors to add to summer compost mixes because we never have enough brown during summer.
You can also just leave everything in a pile and it’ll compost by itself but if it isn’t aerated it takes a much longer time to break down. That’s why tossing it is helpful. The top layer can also become dry and rain rolls off it, so even though you’ve had rain you’ can find your compost isn’t damp. Again, tossing it helps.

Re. Tomatoes in hot weather: Most plants become dormant above 95 degrees and slow down above 85. Phoenix weather seems to be above 85 for most of the day so it’s likely the plant has shut down. Also, as someone stated earlier, you don’t get any fruit set unless nighttime temps are below 70. All the watering abd shade cloth may do nothing more than keeping the plant alive. It also sounds like your plant may have a blight. Your local Agricultural Extension Agency (if the GOP hasn’t gutted it) should have some guidance on growing tomatoes. I bet thry recommend planting in mid March, protected from cool nights, and give up when temps exceed 100 for more than 4 days in a week.
I’m in Seattle but have gardened in Ohio and Arkansas. Fortunately for Seattle there were a lot of plant researchers and breeders in Siberia so we’ve got local tomatoes in August and September, and great ones from eastern Washington greenhouses starting in June.

@Dan B: Depending on where it is in Arizona, a second tomato season could be possible. Plant in late July/August for fall tomatoes (but check with local nurseries to be sure). Go with cherry tomatoes because the fruit doesn’t take as long to mature once set. In a mild fall/winter you can have tomatoes through Christmas, at least.
Young seedlings have to be protected from the heat in July/August and watered at least once and probably twice a day. Mulch is essential and shade cloth helps.

Freeway designation styles must be regional. In west Michigan we don’t put ‘the’ in front of the freeway number, nor do we name them: we go down (or up) 131 or 75, we go across on 96 or 94. In Chicago, they use the names of the freeways (the Kennedy, the Eisenhower, the Tri-state, etc), at least on the traffic reports.

@Amir Khalid: There is no central authority in Judaism, and as a result, no central authority conferring kosher status.
There are a number of different outfits that certify whether any food stuff meets their version of what is required, and different groups of (mainly) Orthodox Jews (because hardly anyone else cares) respect the certification of some outfits but not others. For one example, you might think that Hebrew National hot dogs, salami, etc. are kosher but many groups don’t recognize them as such.
Some of it is various orthodox sects supporting their particular outfit, all of it is corrupt as anything — there’s always a rabbi who will certify your product is kosher for a “little consideration.”

If you’re shooting one-handed, portrait is easier and you’re less likely to drop the phone mid-shot. Landscape takes two hands.

Yeah, right, good luck. Everyone should have a hobby.

@Immanentize: Does your “actually useful” mean that you aren’t satisfied with what’s out on the market? One can definitely find add-on lenses for phone cameras, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they fall far short of what you can get for a DSLR or even what comes on a decent point-and-shoot like my Nikon CoolPix 30x optical zoom.

Allergic to dinosaurs!! Good thing they aren’t all around you all the time, then!
WAIT, they totally are! Tweet, tweet!
Good thing it’s just when you eat them, then…

@drdavechemist: I’ve got a Nikon Coolpix P900 with 83x zoom, and I love the damned thing!

Puh-leeze. Like this is some impossible grip to master? Worst-case scenario, you could just assume your portrait grip and rotate your arm 90 degrees.
More likely it’s unthinking habit: “This is how I hold my phone. This is how I always hold my phone.”

And vice versa. Some named freeways have different numbers for different segments. The obvious example of both happening at once happens at the Hollywood Split. US-101 changes designations from the Hollywood Freeway, which continues as CA-170, picking up the Ventura Freeway designation from CA-134.

@drdavechemist: Yes. not satisfied. It is not that they are optically bad, but they never quite mate with the phone properly. I’ve tried three versions. No luck. if you have a suggestion, I am all ears. (PS the external lenses I tried were all for I-phones. Now I use an android).

I don’t even want to read the linked story. The summary is beyond horrifying.
A year or so ago, give/take, most of us didn’t think things could get much worse.
Boy howdy, were WE ever wrong.

A Fall tomato crop makes sense in southern Arizona. I wonder how the siberian toms would do since they’re tested by short hot spells as well as frosts at harvest time. Also some of the purple toms since they may be crosses with wild toms from siberia and other drier Soviet countries. Territorial Seed Co. in Oregon has a good selection online (and catalog…).
My relatives in Arkansas used to say there was Spring, June, and the season of burning up. The only fresh vegetable was Okra. The toms they grew were all done by mid July. I loved Fall there except for the culture…

@Shana: I’ll find out.

@Dan B: I find the most reliable thing to do is visit a good local nursery. They know what works in the area and should have reputable growers who provide dependable seedlings.

Huh? That never stopped me.

@oatler.: Make sure it’s well-watered (but just enough) and maybe but a net above it to diffuse the intense sunlight. (But normally tomatoes like sun and heat though maybe not 110 gegrees.)
