Beaver booze: A New Hampshire distillery has a new bourbon, Eau De Musc, flavored partly by secretions from a beaver's castor sacs. https://t.co/VR8mXLLIaW #odd

A beaver trapper is called in by NH state to remove nuisance beavers. There’s no domestication or harvesting involved. We simply obtain the sacs from the trapper that would otherwise go to waste.

According to people who know these things, castor glands are not anal glands, and castoreum’s “fruity, vanilla scent” means it’s got a long history as a food additive. Right now, I’m just as happy I’m not a drinker.
Speaking of nuisance beavers…

My inner 12 year old self was thinking of a different kind of beaver when he clicked on this post. That being said, I never knew beavers (the animals) had castor sacs, or that the secretions from these sacs might be used as a food additive.
Petorado
Beaver castor sac liquor still may not top Rocky Mountain oyster stout – http://www.wynkoop.com/brewery/brew-blog/rocky-mountain-oyster-stout/. It’s got something to do with what alcohol does to a person’s judgment.
SiubhanDuinne
I’m almost always a wine drinker. On the very rare occasions I drink whisky, or even whiskey, it’s going to be near Scotch. This article makes me happy that I detest bourbon.

@Jerzy Russian:
Obligatory for your inner 12-year-old.

@SiubhanDuinne: Leslie Nielsen used to come to our basketball games when I was in college at Cal Poly Pomona in the 70s. I think he lived in Claremont and he was a fixture at the games.
opiejeanne
@SiubhanDuinne: Wine or Jameson’s. Someone gave me a shot of bourbon on Saturday and it was like bad cough syrup from the 50s.
Shalimar
I am still stunned by this “stopping war games will save us money” message Trump keeps pushing. He continues to lie and say previous administrations cut the budget and neglected the military. Training exercises are an essential part of readiness. He is literally bragging about cutting the budget and neglecting the military. Why isn’t everyone pointing this out?

@Shalimar:
Too complex an idea. If you can’t fit it on a bumper sticker, the idea is too much for the media to report on.
Banged porn star. Paid her hush money. Short, sweet and thus easy to report on.
What you wrote took a whole lot more words.
SiubhanDuinne
@opiejeanne:
I don’t mind bourbon as an additive to seasonal eggnog, as an ingredient to booze up a cake or cookie recipe, or even as the basis of a whiskey sour (in the highly unlikely event I would ever order such a drink again). But bourbon just to drink? Ugh.
Cool story about Leslie Nielsen.
SectionH
@SiubhanDuinne: I often go for cider these days, but generally the most dry/”champagne” ones. I like it that they don’t usually run much over 6% abv. Otherwise, I order actual fizzy white wine. Cavas, Proseccos, the affordable stuff, but there are a couple of real Champagnes I like in the $20-30 range for sort of special occasions. Méthode Champenoise wines are also The lowest carb alcohol extant. The same amount of fizz is half what a decent Chard or SB is. Srsly.
In spite of my Scots ancestors, I don’t like whisky, except for the smell of some single malts, nor whiskey, and I loathe Bourbon. I do like a G&T when summer’s just arrived, but damn I’d rather have a Gin & Bitter Lemon in the summer. Yes, I’m old.

@Shalimar: Trump doesn’t care about the military unless he can use it as a bully club to harass NFL players. I’m surprised that the rest of the GOP is playing along with him though. Republicans usually act as if they worship the military.
Patricia Kayden
Trump keeps saying that the people of North Korea love Kim. Does he know that they have no choice? Kim is a murderous dictator who oversees gulags for political opponents. He’s not deserving of lavish praise by a western leader.

Haven’t been online much today so don’t know if someone has already pointed to this.
Trump administration to fingerprint parents who claim custody of unaccompanied migrant kids
Children are now mini-terrorists.

If you can’t fit it on a Post-it note, the idea is too much for the media to report on.

@Section H
I like scotch. I like bourbon. Sue me. :)
The Kirkland Prosecco (house brand) at Costco ain’t bad at all and runs maybe six bucks a bottle. They’ve been heavily pushing it on multiple endcap displays at the Costco here. Must, must, must be served ice cold.

@NotMax: not sure that’s all bad news. I don’t like the parents being checked with the assumption they are criminals but there is a problem with reunification especially with very small children. They could solve it by ending the completely unnecessary separation of course. HRS has been fingerprinting everybody involved in its system for a long time, not just migrants. Employees and clients. I was fingerprinted as a foster mom and had background checks of course. My nephew was fingerprinted as part of the adoption process. However I am now sceptical of the value of fingerprinting a 2 year old as it turns out to be very difficult to get readable finger prints from a small child. He didn’t understand and was unhelpful. Anyway it was a normal non immigrant harassment specific process. Also they do fingerprints and background checks for everyone in a foster home including other minor children and yes sometimes minor children are sex offenders.

@Shalimar: “Trump’s statements have no internal logical consistency” is not news.
Matt McIrvin
@Patricia Kayden: To him that’s the best kind of love, and the kind he’s familiar with.
The Other Chuck
@Petorado: I’ve had the Rocky Mountain Oyster stout and well, it tastes like any other stout. It’s a gimmick for the label. Pretty sure this beaver brew is the same way.
