Breaking News: Paul Ryan dismissed President Trump’s charge of a spy in his campaign and warned against his pardoning himself: “No one is above the law” https://t.co/GlRE5L6PoO

Cynics point out that Paulie No-Balls waited until well after Trump’s bullshite ‘spygate’ fantasies had become settled wisdom among the Deplorable Base, but I think any sign of Ryan developing an allergy to Republican lies has to be a positive for truth, justice, and the American way:
… Ryan (R-Wis.) described as “accurate” an initial assessment offered by week by Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.), chairman of the House Oversight Committee, who told Fox News that “the FBI did exactly what my fellow citizens would want them to do” in investigating information alleging certain Trump campaign advisers had suspicious ties to Russia…
Ryan was careful Wednesday not to disparage all of Nunes’s complaints with the Justice Department, a list of grievances that includes several unfulfilled demands for documents unrelated to the spying accusations. Democrats maintain Nunes is determined to undermine the law enforcement agencies and, by extension, the foundations of special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s investigation into whether Trump’s campaign coordinated with Russia to influence the election’s outcome.
Ryan’s announcement appeared to surprise some fellow Republicans pushing for release of that information. Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.), who has floated the possibility of impeaching Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein, who oversees Mueller’s probe, declined to comment on Ryan’s take until after he had spoken directly with the speaker…

I did something I’ve rarely done today–write a letter to my newspaper. My senator opined to a, Religious Leaders conference (?) that if Oklahoma votes to legalize cannabis it will be harmful to the “social fabric” of the state. What pray tell does that mean and why wasn’t he in TX with Senator Markey. He’s such a slimy aw-shucks kind of a …..AARGH! I don’t think the MJ question is any of his business, since it’s a state issue. The actual ballot question as I understand it isn’t optimally designed for real legalization, it’s a very begrudging option, and it may not pass. NotMax
It’s a rank an order of magnitude higher than Mayor McCheese.
Why do I get the feeling Conway let slip one of the names used to refer to him inside the White House?
Frank Wilhoit
Bear with me just a second here. I’m going to put something out there and I hpoe y’all’n will think about it for a moment before snap-reacting.
Should we stop asking “WHY” any Republican does/says anything (or, more specifically, why they did/said such-a-thing at such-a-time)?
What does it get us? If your answer is “brief entertainment”, well and fine; we’re done here; go play, with my full blessing. But if the “why” question is serious, think about the only kinds of answers you get:
A) implausible
B) nonsensical
C) convoluted
D) discreditable (to the Republican, not to the person asking “why”)
E) horrifying
F) terrifying (not the same thing)
G) combinations of the above
Now, think about the average extent to which any of the answers are either predictive (going beyond known priors(*)) or explanatory.
So I propose a Third Law of Questions, namely that questions respecting the motivations of Republicans are not worth asking, because, in any given case, they either fall into known priors(*) or else are completely inscrutable.
The deeper point is that everything Republicans do or say is performative. It may look or sound like discourse or action, but it isn’t — even where it has concrete real-world effects. Therefore, the only level upon which it can be engaged is that of applied literary criticism. Then there is a tacit elision between politics (whatever that is, or may be, or once was) and applied literary criticism. Perhaps that elision is correct and necessary; but, if so, then all the more should it be made explicitly. There is (if the latest DSM has not defined it away) a mental disorder whose victims lose track of the distinction between reality and performance and start believing that characters in their favorite TV series or movies are actual persons. Whatever one does repeatedly, one becomes conditioned to continue doing. When we mistake performance for discourse, or even pretend, as a rhetorical strategy, to mistake performance for discourse, the distinction fades, and I think the distinction is a crucially important one.
So perhaps we should confine ourselves to observations of the form, “such-a-Republican did/said such-a-thing; it is (categories listed above), for these reasons”, rather than falling into the trap of speculating on motivations, which speculation is not only a category error, but one that confers a supposititious and unintended legitimacy upon its subject.
(*) The list of known priors can probably be consolidated; that is a separate issue.

E.g. McClatchyDC:
IOW, as I understand it, the Kochs set up groups, put up some seed money, hire some people, and then beat the bushes to get other RWNJ millionaires to contribute. How much do the Kochs actually contribute? Dunno.
Sourcewatch says that Freedom Partners has 200 members and raised $256M in the 2012 cycle.
