Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

What fresh hell is this?

Good luck with your asparagus.

I personally stopped the public option…

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

There’s some extremely good trouble headed their way.

… down to kool-aid drinkers and next of kin at the trump White House

Dinky Hocker shoots smack!

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

The revolution will be supervised.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

False Scribes! False Scribes!

The math demands it!

Where tasty lettuce and good mustard aren’t elitist.

I’m going back to the respite thread.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

This is how realignments happen…

This really is a full service blog.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

I can’t take this shit today. I just can’t.

Separation of children is being used as a deterrent for other immigrants. This is Trump’s policy. https://t.co/isvla5HRWe

— Maggie Haberman (@maggieNYT) June 5, 2018

The president has gone through a lot of trouble to ax DACA and impose a tough immigration crackdown that’s at the heart of his political identity… but when things get controversial he’s preferred to blame Democrats, who want to do the opposite, rather than own those actions.

— Sahil Kapur (@sahilkapur) June 5, 2018

Two lies here. There’s no legislation that requires separation; this is a Trump policy he refuses to own. Trump hasn’t started a wall; there’ve been a couple of fence replacement projects. pic.twitter.com/NRK3qtYsKt

Here’s the AG who Trump professes disdain for describing the necessity of the policy Trump claims isn’t his own in an interview w @hughhewitt : pic.twitter.com/5VgZF6zmug

As this unfolds, please remember that the only way to seek asylum in the US—a protected right under international law—is to ‘spontaneously’ come to a US port of entry or govt official and apply. Sessions frames exercising this right as a crime for which you should lose your kids. https://t.co/Z5nwPaZlWq

— southpaw (@nycsouthpaw) June 5, 2018

I bet when Trump is berating him on Twitter & pressuring him to resign, Jeff Sessions ponders quitting, but he remembers the real reason he's stayed in the office, & improves his mood by watching video of CBP agents ripping crying children from the arms of asylum seekers.

— Dana Houle (@DanaHoule) June 5, 2018

“Senator Merkley and his staff saw children in cages.” https://t.co/E0qXlmDQ0t

— Matt Katz (@mattkatz00) June 5, 2018

The Trump admin says the way to avoid family separation is to present for asylum at a port of entry.

Except that border agents are — physically — stopping some asylum-seekers from getting to ports of entry. https://t.co/BnDHXfPWh6

John Heilemann on MSNBC just called Poppy Bush’s ’88 campaign about the Pledge, and “card-carrying member of the ACLU” and Willie Horton, the (I think I’ve got this right) the most despicable presidential campaign of the next twenty years.

Good for him. The old man has gotten off far too easy.

This is just monstrous. In spite of all the glaring evidence before me that this is indeed a fact about our electorate, I am having a real problem with the realization that 1/3 (or more!) of the electorate supports this ghoulish policy.

Maggie being a bit less sycophantic because of the kids? I applaud Jeff Merkley and Robert Menedez for showing up at these facilities and raising a stink. Now we just need a whistleblower on the inside to take some hidden video and sneak it to the WaPo or the Guardian or the LA Times. (FTFNYT still not eligible due to past sins.) You know the kids are being treated like animals and footage of that would be worth a million words.

Something happened. Not him going to conservatism, that was after. Something very big and behind the scenes happened and he was GONE. No explanation, no nothing. He pissed somebody very powerful off and that was the end of his career.

Never the same. He was still trying to be funny, but was so bitter it turned everything he tried to shit. It shone through him, still does.

Then 9/11, which I think genuinely freaked him out. And he finally found an audience of people who didn’t give a shit if he was funny or just mad. American conservatives.

For the love of God, DeVos, don’t you make me unholster the “c” word!

he federal school safety commission set up after the deadly shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School will not examine the role of guns in school violence, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos said Tuesday. DeVos’ testimony to a Senate subcommittee came amid criticism by Democrats and some educators that the panel, set up by President Donald Trump in March, was focused more on distracting public attention rather than truly addressing gun violence. During a hearing on education spending, DeVos was asked whether the commission that she is chairing will look at guns in the context of school safety.

“That is not part of the commission’s charge per se,” DeVos told a Senate subcommittee overseeing education spending. “We are actually studying school safety and how we can ensure our students are safe at school.”

Sen. Patrick Leahy, a Vermont Democrat, who asked the question, quipped.

“So you are studying gun violence, but not considering the role of guns.”

DeVos’ spokeswoman Liz Hill later clarified in a statement that the commission will look at all the issues the president asked it to study. She added, however, “It’s important to note that the commission cannot create or amend current gun laws — that is the Congress’ job.”

Nor will the commission look at best practices of foreign nations that have much lower rates of gun violence, DeVos said. Instead, she cited her recent visit to a Maryland elementary school that has moved away from strict discipline practices in favor of softer approaches in creating a positive school climate. Some educators have noted that the method has been widely used across the country for many years and is not new.

DeVos also skirted Leahy’s question on whether she believes an 18-year-old high school student should be able to purchase an AR-15-style assault weapon, which has been used in many mass shootings in the United States in recent years.

“I believe that’s very much a matter for debate,” DeVos said.

Rusty agricultural implements are far too good for her.

@The Moar You Know: as I recall, his HBO show, which IMDB tells me ran from 94-2002 was pretty popular. I visited Eastern Europe this spring to see what is happening there in terms of refugees and asylum seekers. What is happening in Trump’s America is nearly identical to what is happening in Hungary, Croatia, and to some extent Serbia. Except in most cases over there, the families at least can stay together. So we’re worse in some respects.

One of the NGOs we visited was working to further uncover a case of a ‘pushback’ (where asylum seekers are forced back over the border without being able to apply, which is illegal (at least per European Court of Human Rights in Strassbourg). A six year old girl was killed by a train when her family was told, at gun point, to cross back into Serbia the way they came – over the border tracks.

Its a terrible mess made all the worse by the right wing governments such as Hungary and Viktor Orban. And of course the Balkan nations all look at Trump’s hard line and say, we’re just doing what he’s doing!

Mexico hit back at the United States on Tuesday, imposing tariffs on around $3 billion worth of American pork, whiskey, cheese and other goods in response to the Trump administration’s steel and aluminum levies, further straining relations between the two countries as they struggle to rewrite the North American Free Trade Agreement.

The tariffs came as the Trump administration threw yet another complication into the fractious Nafta talks by saying it wants to splinter discussions with Canada and Mexico and work on separate agreements rather than continue three-country discussions to rewrite the 1994 trade deal.

    Via the FTFNYT

Florida school shooting survivor targeted in ‘swatting’ prank

These fuckers. Its not a fucking prank. They’re trying to kill him.

The Parkland school shooting survivor and gun reform activist David Hogg was the victim of a so-called “swatting” prank on Tuesday, when a hoax 911 call saying he had been kidnapped sent a team of heavily armed police officers to his house.

Neither Hogg nor any family members were at their home when the Broward sheriff’s office Swat team responded to the anonymous call shortly after 8.30am.

“The call was regarding someone in the home with a weapon,” Gina Carter, a BSO spokesperson, told the Guardian. “We responded to the home and cleared the property. It was established that the call was a hoax and detectives are investigating to try to find out who made the call.”

Fox News accused of ‘propaganda’ after implying praying players knelt for anthem

Fox News may have hit on a problem as it looked to report on Donald Trump’s decision to disinvite the Philadelphia Eagles from a White House visit “because he insists that they proudly stand for the National Anthem, hand on heart, in honor of the great men and women of our military and the people of our country.” The hitch being that none of the Eagles’ players knelt for the anthem last season (some players did stage other protests such as raising fists).

In search of striking images, Fox used pictures of Eagles players taking a knee on the field suggesting they had knelt for the anthem. Those players were not protesting at racial injustice though: they were praying as players across the league have done before games for years.

“This is a beautiful, big celebration,” claimed Trump, notorious for his obsession with size, at the end of remarks that lasted only four minutes. “Actually, to be honest, it’s even bigger than we had anticipated.”
