9. If Schneiderman resigns the vacancy will be filled by the state legislature and the election for AG is this year!

I wonder if @PreetBharara will run for NY Attorney General.
— Jeffrey Toobin (@JeffreyToobin) May 8, 2018
.@PreetBharara for AG.
The fired US Attorney returns as the Attorney General of the State of New York, the position most able to bring down the whole Trump Crime Family.
THAT would be karma. https://t.co/X3BFvtMp5O

Of course, there's a NY lawyer named Hillary Rodham Clinton who needs a new gig.
— Charles P. Pierce (@CharlesPPierce) May 8, 2018
We don't need this to happen. Just getting the rumor started would bring hours of comedy gold.
— Charles P. Pierce (@CharlesPPierce) May 8, 2018
Maybe this is the greatest service Cynthia Nixon's candidacy can do for the Republic, to say it should be Bahara, & force Cuomo to pressure the legislature to appoint him. https://t.co/8WvMzStszq
— Dana Houle (@DanaHoule) May 8, 2018
But seriously, folks…
The @AGSchneiderman story reminds us: badness is not a zero-sum game. Bad people can be opposed by bad people. The trick is not looking the other way when the bad people are on "your side."
— StoleMyLookHat (@Popehat) May 8, 2018
It took just three hours for Cuomo to call on Schneiderman to resign.
Meanwhile, Eric Greitens faces two felony charges and accusations of rape yet remains the Governor of Missouri. Republicans refuse to call for his resignation.
No, both parties are not the same.
— Matt McDermott (@mattmfm) May 8, 2018
Apparently, you have to be either governor of Missouri or president of the United States to survive one of these things.

Not a NYer, but this appeals to me

I heard the Misery state leg, Republican controlled, was going to vote to get rid of Greitens.

This will not stand.

Tonight’s Rachel Maddow Show is online now at her site (no cable needed). Easy to watch if you feel up for it.
She talks about “the notoriously insane NYS Legislature” picking the new AG … and other state AG political issues.

HRC would be a great pick. It would result in non-stop Trump corruption coverage. I doubt she would want to take the hot seat though.
NY is full of aggressive prosecutors that would make great choices. It would be most helpful if NY could actually make it a woman.

Bharara is a typical NY fed prosecutor: go after easy insider trading cases (and mostly against foreign nationals) and stay away from the big fish. Too many people think he is some sort of giant waiting in the wings. Goes to show what constant promotion can do. The article in the New Yorker is pretty bad and covered by very reputable reporters but not surprised to see a certain NY gov and NY senator swoop in immediately for the kill -,one less rival to steal the spotlight.
burnspbesq
@SPC:
That’s a blatant misstatement of Bharara’s record. What’s your agenda?

I see what you did there.
I all seriousness, Alison Ellwood’s documentary ‘History of the Eagles’ is fascinating. The most amazing part is that it was commissioned by Henley / Frey, who had final approval, and they STILL didn’t see how arrogant they came across throughout the piece…

I know I shouldn’t let this bother me but the NYT’s stance as the vanguard of sexual abuse reporting burns my giblets.
Serial harasser Glenn Thrush still has a cushy, high-profile job; the NYT wants to protect women……from men who don’t work at the NYT.
Remember all their articles decrying Killary’s refusal to promptly fire the abuser in her 2008 campaign? I’m surprised they didn’t give Glenn Thrush the byline just to fuck with us.

SPC
@burnspbesq: No it’s not. He took office right in the middle of the financial crisis. How many Wall Street execs did time for that fiasco? His main focus was insider trading which given the circumstances, shouldn’t have been the biggest priority. He’s not right for AG. I would have more confidence in one of Schneiderman’s deputies as an interim AG until November.

@Omnes Omnibus: I can go ape if you would like a regular to go off on strong opinions. Scheiderman is not a crusader and he can readily be replaced. The whole sexualized NY political scene could use a purge. These are just the cases that were solid and documented thoroughly enough to get all the way through a good reporter. I’m afraid of how pervasive this kind of conduct is and how much enabling is going on.
gwangung
@SPC:
This is not a very good reason. Bribes are easy to sell to a jury. Insider trading a bit harder, but doable. What happened in 2008 was both a) hard to explain to a jury (even most political addicts have a hard time explaining it) and b) hard to determine which, if any, laws were broken (as some of the bigger cases came up with accuittal.).
But perhaps I’m mistaken. And you’re a specialist in white collar crime. Can you be precise in your critique.
hervevillechaizelounge
@Calouste: @Omnes Omnibus:
Sorry, forgot my sarcasm font;)
I’m sure the people trying to drag Clinton into this as a replacement will be the same folks screaming a week from now: “Why won’t she just gooooooooooooo away!”
The NYT did sit on a Weinstein piece until outing abusers became trendy; I imagine they were hoping to keep the Miramax invites coming.
SPC
@Omnes Omnibus: Family members with decades of experience in NY federal court system. Plus his record; he was not aggressive enough against the widespread, systemic fraud that occurred during the financial crisis. I have nothing against him but he is overhyped -largely due to his unceremonious firing by Trump. Probably better than anyone Cuomo would push for and sure, he may be more aggressive now that it’s personal (which could also open up an easy line of attack from the right noise machine). If he wants it, he can run in November and make his case. In the interest of continuity, better to appoint one of the deputies who are already in the thick of it.

After doing the wrong thing, ( denial), Schniederman did the right thing, resigned. He goes up a notch for that.

@Omnes Omnibus: I’ve been reading Cole for years. Don’t be so paranoid. There’s nothing deza about my opinion here. Schneiderman has been exposed as a creep at the worst possible time but I feel people are mythologizing Bharara a bit too much. Same argument going on at politicalwire.

So you claim. I just think it’s awfully suspicious that whenever something big like this drops, a bunch of new people come out of the woodwork to tell us how we’re all doing.it.wrong.
SPC
@burnspbesq: a lot of insider trading cases and some fines for big banks. Insider trading cases resulted in prison but no one of any importance did time for fraud. The fines, by and large, were cost of doing business. I’m not saying he’s a bad guy or compromised but he tended to play by the same old rules that never saw people like Goldfarb or Dimon sweat and fosters moral hazard in the long run. Institutions were held financially liable but their executives were not aggressively pursued criminally. Even if they were all acquitted, just having them in court would have been a small victory.

@? ?? Goku (aka Amerikan Baka) ? ?:
I won’t guarantee it but I’m pretty sure that SPC has been around for a while. Maybe longer than you.
And a somewhat to well informed opinion is always of value. As I said in another thread I was, a number of years ago, on a first name basis at work with Al Franken’s accuser. That doesn’t in any way make me an expert but it does lend a bit more exposure to the situation. This person is doing that.
We may need to take a step back and review some here. Emotions are running pretty wide open these days and stuff like this doesn’t help any of us.

Ruckus
@? ?? Goku (aka Amerikan Baka) ? ?:
You may be here fairly often but you haven’t been here a fairly long time. Many of us used to stop by before John found his sanity. There are people who stop by but do not comment a lot and if you haven’t got a long history here you may not know some of the infrequent commenters. I’m not dead positive about SPC but I believe that he/she/it has been around for some time.
Let’s take a look at the thread below this one. A commenter showed up and told lamh36 to get lost. I told him to go fuck himself because he was adding nothing to the conversation and has, if any presence at all here before today, none that anyone seems to be able to recall. This is different, this is a person claiming to have exposure to the NYAG office and knowledge of things that many/most of us would not. Right or wrong that’s something that could be helpful and I believe has been here, abet quietly for some time. Not that that makes everything hunky dory, you may be 100% on the money. But it is at least an addition to the conversation. There is a difference.
To bed, I’ve got to be up in 6 1/ 2 hr.

@hervevillechaizelounge: The Schneiderman story was broken by Jane Mayer & Ronan Farrow of the New Yorker. The NYT did not break the story. Schneiderman was a source who I expect the beat reporters protected.

Dev Null
@Ruckus: Concur.
Can be true even if a ‘nym has only recent comments, as is my case … I’ve commented here every now and again for the past 12+ odd years (my first comments posted “before John found his sanity”) … but I commented under two other ‘nyms. I decided to ditch one ‘nym because it was too close to my real name, and then the other because people reacted to the ‘nym in odd ways. (At another blog, the blog proprietor went batshit in response to a couple of friendly inquiries … the only reason I could figure was my ‘nym.)
