Could the NRCC not say no to an unsolicted offer for Trump to campaign for Saccone, or were they do gobsmackingly stupid that they thought it was a good idea?
— Dana Houle (@DanaHoule) March 11, 2018
As we have seen repeatedly when Trump campaigns for someone else, the person is part of the scenery. It's among reasons why Trump aides are keenly aware a lot of Rs won't want him helping in person this year https://t.co/WWiD4LVB3q

Fun for that one guy, and of course his most fervent supporters!
Will any of them show up to vote for Saccone on Tuesday? How many of them are eligible to do so? How many of them even know who Saccone is?
Saccone says "To stand here speak before the president does, that’s the ultimate blessing"
— Ben Jacobs (@Bencjacobs) March 10, 2018
Well, at least the stupid putz deserved exactly what he got…
… The rally, which had been rescheduled after the deadly Parkland, Fla., shooting last month, capped a frenzied stretch of fund-raising and campaigning on behalf of Mr. Saccone, who is locked in a tight race with the Democratic nominee, Conor Lamb.
“He’s an extraordinary person,” Mr. Trump said of Mr. Saccone, dismissing Mr. Lamb as “Lamb the Sham.” “The people of Pittsburgh cannot be conned by this guy Lamb, because he’s not going to vote for us.”…
While the rally was not specifically advertised as one for Mr. Saccone, a loss by him would mark the third time that Mr. Trump had thrown his political might behind a candidate without success. With his low poll numbers, Republican leaders and the White House are trying to determine how to handle his desire to campaign in the midterms…
Is this a rally for Rick Saccone?
Or is this a chance for the president to criticize CNN and MSNBC and talk about North Korea and hosting the Apprentice?
— Chris Megerian (@ChrisMegerian) March 11, 2018
Only mention so far was right at beginning. "Do me a factor: go out and vote for Rick Saccone …and we can leave right now." https://t.co/mG1HE0Y9vm

.@MSNBC why are you airing a campaign rally for a Republican candidate in a close election?
When have you aired the Democratic candidate’s rallies?
— The Hoarse Whisperer (@HoarseWisperer) March 11, 2018
Donald Trump: “Rick Saccone knows things other people don’t know. He’s special. He counseled me on North Korea and told me other things specialists didn’t know.”
Saccone is a Pennsylvania state Senator.

Crowd in PA at Trump rally seems uncertain what they're supposed to be cheering and booing in the Trump speech. Media boos being the exception.

16 months after the 2016 presidential election, Trump is standing on a stage in Pennsylvania and re-living election night.
Must be sad when the highest point of your presidency is before you've even taken office.
— Caroline O. (@RVAwonk) March 11, 2018
The most dispiriting thing about this speech – aside from the fact that these are words coming from an actual sitting president – is that the audience has no idea what's true or false, and doesn't care.
But don't call them stupid.— Tom Nichols (@RadioFreeTom) March 11, 2018
Absolute bullshit that Trump rallies are aired live. But I’m unconvinced it’s a net positive for Trump. I’m confident a lot of people are hate watching. And he may motivate Dems more than Repubs.

Peanut and I went to see A Wrinkle In TIme
We both loved it. It was a beautiful looking film. I loved the young girl who plays the lead. I don’t think I’m spoiling when I say that the moment our heroine- Meg- finally finds her father, made me cry.
Peanut was like ‘ Auntie, are you crying?’, and I had to nod. She just held my hand.
One reviewer said that the movie was a love letter to Black girls, and I thought that was true. But, I think that Ava brought out why girls over decades have related to Meg. She’s not the beautiful, composed, most popular girl.
Meg is brainy, awkward, with flaws, but brilliant, and we can see the heroine in her before she can feel it herself. I thought Ava did a fabulous job bringing forth Meg into flesh.
I loved it.

@rikyrah: That’s great to hear! I’m looking forward to seeing it myself on tuesday. I adored Meg, the first time i read the book in the 80s as a young, mixed-race girlgeek. She may be a math nerd, and i was as much of one in different subjects (music, english, reading anything i could get my damned hands on). But she was me as a kidlet. I wasn’t quite so angry, but i was still an outsider in my own school and neighborhood. The fact that Ava cast her as a mixed girl just made my jaw drop. So seeing this is gonna be personal on a couple of levels. Not just that it is a gorgeous adaptation of one of the more memorable books of my 80s childhood. This movie is going to be important for an entire generation of little girls, but especially girls of color who happen to be smart too.

@lamh36:
If you know you have an 8 hour layover, then go see something in LA. It’s enough time. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the La Brea Tar Pits (I know, odd combination, but they’re actually pretty close to each other) are about 20 minutes away from LAX. You can leave your checked luggage checked and just take your hand luggage with you, obviously leaving time to get through security (which can take a while in LA).
O. Felix Culpa
@? ?? Goku (aka Amerikan Baka) ? ?: Ees okay. :)
Omnes Omnibus
@Adam L Silverman: Hey, I still got to see international level rugby. I shall be rooting for France.
? ?? Goku (aka Amerikan Baka) ? ?
@Omnes Omnibus: Oh. Sorry. I confused that with another one I wrote.
Pete Downunder
@lamh36: LAX is way better than it was, but 8 hours is an ordeal. Sadly there is nothing nearby that’s easily accessible. As to SYD – a few thoughts. Depending on weather and fitness the walk from Bondi Beach to Bronte Beach is really beautiful and good cafes at either end. Again if budget, weather and fitness permit the Harbour Bridge Climb is amazing. Less active is taking the ferry from Circular Quay (pronounced “key”) to Manly. About 1/2 hour through the Harbour to a nice walk along the beach. The ferry is pretty cheap.

@Jim, Foolish Literalist:
It was really bad. I don’t know why anyone thought she would be good at this. She’s a behind the scenes political operative, skulking around scheming and threatening state lawmakers. They never brought her out as the public face of …anything, and there was a reason for that.
Gin & Tonic
@lamh36: Plus, be prepared that LAX-MEL is 15+ hours. That’s a long time if your head isn’t fully ready for it. You’ll likely land in the morning. Do *not* take a nap. Stay up and active until normal bedtime if at all possible.

I had the same experience about 20 years after high school. I remember laughing my ass off, but in the 90s, I didn’t think it was funny as much as it was sad. And like you said, too whiny.
And if you say this to people who love the book they come at you with ‘talkin’ ’bout my mama!’ rage.
O. Felix Culpa
@Omnes Omnibus: I get it. I was a literary omnivore too. Maybe because I had younger siblings, I read books for younger children while also reading the fun older stuff. I tended to glom onto an author and read EVERYTHING by that person and then move on to the next. I loved the Sherlock Holmes stories!

I have to say I feel very let down. I just turned on a show titled Beat Bobby Flay. That title is completely false advertising. Not a single person was pummeling him with rolling pins or meat mallets or anything else you’d find in a kitchen and could do some damage with. Complete bait and switch.

@lamh36: 8 hours? During the day or at night? During the day, I’d suggest visiting the Getty Center. By LA standards, it’s not too far from the airport and it’s a great place to just walk around even if you have little interest in the art collection.

LACA/La Brea Tar Pits is fantabulous, but you’d need a car for that trip and 20 minutes is -um- optimistic. Mapquest says 32, and that’s without traffic.
Venice Beach might be semi-reasonable by taxi.

@Adam L Silverman: The show you wanted was Flay Bobby Flay. That episode hasn’t been scheduled yet.

@Omnes Omnibus: My siblings and I were closer in age than you and your brother, so I got the benefit of exposure to kid’s books that they read. Interestingly (to me, at least), a favorite picture book that I was introduced to via my younger sister – Ezra Jack Keats’ The Snowy Day – was published the same year as Wrinkle in Time. The former won the Caldecott and the latter the Newbery Medal. Both awards well-deserved, IMHO.

I read that piece where they said his poor employees have to listen to the same stories over and over, down to the hand gestures and I was thinking “I KNEW it”.
My mother in law had a rich boyfriend between her 1st and 2nd husband and I had to sit next to him at a college football game. EVERYTHING, he had an opinion, and so mean-spirited! May is our fall so it can be cool and there is nothing between MEL and the Antarctic but 3000 miles of vey cold water. SYD is more temperate. We have a good weather website bom.gov.au with forecasts, radar etc. if you can get a front pager to give you my email I’ll send you some notes about Australia. Mapquest said 20 minutes when I checked, but of course that was on a Sunday evening. Still, it’s an 8 hour layover, so if you burn an hour and a half in taxis or car share services to and from and leave 90 minutes for TSA, etc., that still is 5 hours to look at art and tar.

@lamh36: taxi, Uber up to Santa Monica, walk on the beach, have dessert on the promenade etc. Alternately, do much the same at Playa del Rey, wh. is even closer to LAX and much more funky/relaxed. The other two books in the original trilogy are not so much later, as Charles Wallace remains a little kid, but they are much heavier, lit. and fig. Those of you offering things for lamh 36 to do in LA , remember when she gets there 1 pm. She’s almost into afternoon traffic and by the time she gets a cab and gets anywhere a lot of the things would be closed or it will be dark. When I used to fly out of LAX a lot I used to leave the house 2 1/2-3 hrs before my flight to get through traffic, to get through security, to check in so they wouldn’t give away my seat…….. You just never know how LAX is going to be. I’ve been there when it looked deserted and I’ve been there when you couldn’t move 20 ft in a straight line in any direction. And far more times packed than deserted or even close. In 2016, LAX handled 80,921,527 passengers. I’m pretty sure I’ve been there on a day when 5% of them were as well. As to traffic etc remember that LA county is over 10 million, largest populated county in the US. LA county population is larger than 41 states. And on some days we all seem to want to go to or by the airport.

@WaterGirl: Her appointment was a quid pro quo;not because of her infamous brother, Erik Prince. But because of all the money her family has given to Republicans, and after all, as she said tonight to Leslie Stahl who asked why she was cutting billions from public schools and giving the monies to charters and private schools, both religious and not, billions have been given to public schools and no improvements have resulted.
She also got the appointment, because, like her fellow cabinet members, she’s only interested in dismantling government, not improving it. I did love the comebacks from those Parkland kids who gave her a hard time about her photo op appearance there. But, as she said to Stahl, she is going to head a commission to look into how schools can be made safer. I heard no mention of guns before I changed channels. I really really can no longer listen to Trump, his cabinet, his staff, nor any of his supporters.

@lamh36: probably too late to post this reply, but maybe you’ll catch it later. Sydney’s wonderful to visit. And the weather’s better. Melbourne’s the better place to live, at least according to my friends who live there. Ahhem. If you just have a couple of days in Melbourne after a Transpac flight, idk, there are lots of great neighborhoods. Pick a hotel that sounds good – not the airport, it’s not convenient, sleep a lot, and walk around. The transit system is really good, but there are trains, trams, and buses. I haven’t been back in a while, but I will pester ppl for reccies.
@Litlebritdifrnt: The one time (our 1st trip, of course) we did a tourist dinner-formercial in The Rocks, it was actually more enjoyable and informative than I’d expected. And they had really good and strong Long Island Tea, never mind what they called it.

Back a few decades ago I lived 6-8 miles from LAX in west LA. So I have to ask, what is within 5 miles of LAX that is worth the hassle? The traffic then was crap, it’s only gotten a lot worse. Remember this is someone not from around here who has to take some form of public transit and return to the airport. It’s going to be close to 2 by the time she gets a cab or an uber, and like I said go where? There is passable food at LAX, she has access to the upper class lounge…….. If she had a 12 hr layover that to me would be more than enough time to do stuff. Personally I’d set my phone alarm and lay down on the floor and take a good nap. But then I’ve had to do that a few times.

The 405 south from the 101 to southbay is a parking lot until 8pm. Ghetty is futile.
I wish people would stop looking at Mapquest for LA traffic estimates. Folks, please be reasonable, those tools know nothing.
The best bet is probably Venice. Santa Monica is too far and traffic around Promenade just sucks.
It’s 25-30 minutes from LAX to the Boardwalk and Muscle Beach. Check out Windward Ave for the iconic Venice sign and Rose Ave for the clown ballerina and Mecca of Bodybuilding. Restaurants are everywhere.
If your flight is at 9, leave Venice by 6:30. It’ll probably take you 45 minutes to LAX, max an hour. The driver has multiple routes to LAX, so you won’t be stuck. This should give you solid 4-5 hours of entertainment and California sunshine and vibes.
Also, weed is now recreational in CA. Just sayin’ …

These day’s, if you are savvy, your carry on has your documents, your devices, socks, underwear, t-shirt, toiletries, at a minimum.
That way, when the SHTF, as it all too often does, you have enough minor comforts not to feel like a baglady, when your flight finally departs.
I fly with an MEC Packbag. It’s a suitcase, a backpack, and a daypack, combined. The backpack get’s checked, the daypack is carry on.
Fair Economist
@Ruckus: I totally get the concern about leaving LAX. 8 hours, though – that really is enough time to do something, as long as there’s a fairly direct way to get there and back (so, shuttle, Flyaway, or cab, since public transport there is still a joke). Given the time, roughly 1/2 hour out, 1 hour back, 1/2 hour waiting, and 2 hours early for an international flight, and there’s still 3 hours left over. Maybe 4 for Venice or Manhattan Beach.

Not much of a “lugaround”,
Plus, it’s a daypack, so water and snacks.
The only thing wrong with it these days, is on flights, can’t have the Gerber tool, lighters, flashlight, nail clippers, etc because of the Statzi.
Back in the day when you could, I lived off the contents for almost a week in Dallas, when my luggage when to YVR, and my flight wasn’t going anywhere.

@Fair Economist: Sensible post, ty. The not-so-little anymore shopping/restaurant area on El Segundo is admittedly a very conservative option, but it’s there. Manhattan Beach was obvsly the 1st backup I was thinking about.
I’m backing off here. I reread lamh’s actual posts about her trip. I think she’s travelling with a FF friend (srsly cheap ticket, access to AAdmirals Club, etc) so I’d love it if she’s up for something with Juicers, but that’s her call. I’ve opinionated way too much already.
Tenar Arha
@rikyrah: I really liked it, a lot. I haven’t worked through exactly what about the plot & characters I want to talk about precisely, but any movie that turns me into a book recommender & evangelist to people who were in the theater with me made a good impression.
The movie was visually beautiful. And faithful to the source material’s reading level. (That is, because it’s not based on a YA novel which is 13+, it’s Middle Grade for 8-12 year olds, though I used to recommend it to the more fluent readers of 10+). The calibration of the PG movie to the original source material of a children’s novel was perfect.
I’m putting in a plug for the 3D (with the usual caveats that I’m aware it’s not for everyone). Loved the visuals. Really enjoyed the shallow depth of field & how DuVernay used it. Liked what she did to highlight POV by shifting the focus of the 3D.

My best you can’t get there from here today story is at ATL. Arrived on time, amazingly and was ready to board the last flight of the day out to back home. That flight isn’t going to move a foot so they put us up in a motel. By the time the mini bus got to the airport and we drove all the way across town to the crappiest hotel on the planet it was 3am. Driver told us he’d be back at 5am to pick us up. Next time it happened, which of course it did, I just walked over to a corner of the terminal and laid down on the floor and had a sleep. @Dorothy A. Winsor (formerly Iowa Old Lady):
You’re not alone. The fooferaw about its Newberry (look! RESPECTABLE fantasy, for serious people! Not those dumb nerds!) happened when I’d been reading sf/fantasy for enough years that I found it… extremely juvenile.
Also, as a proto-animist in a parochial school, the author’s theology irked me. Everything is connected! Everything matters! Chaos is an essential element of… OMG WE MUST QUICKLY RUN HIDE UNDER SKY-DADDY’S PROTECTION!!!!
I showed the trailer to my Spousal Unit, who’s a couple years older than I am & also an early sf reader, without comment. He said he read the book in high school, but “too much Screwtape for me.”
It’s an important book to a lot of people, and presumably the movie isn’t as Christianist as L’Engle meant the book to be. So, I can be glad it’s out there, even if we probably won’t get around to watching it, at least on a big screen.

I’ll also second heading south from LAX to El Segundo or Manhattan Beach as another alternative. Not too far, avoids some of the worst of the traffic.
Resist the temptation to rent a car for the afternoon. LAX rental cars and offsite and busy, even if you’ve got preferred membership and just pick up the car once you arrive, getting there and back will chew up valuable time.

I read A Wrinkle In Time quite recently. The characters and the story were fine, but as a long-time science fiction buff I thought the explanation of the tesseract, and why possessing one would give you such powers, was confusing. How do you choose where/when to go? Maybe I’m asking too much of a fantasy, but then it should not have strayed into mathematics.

@Anne Laurie: I’m pretty sure I read it in the 4th grade, when dinosaurs, etc. – I hadn’t read much SF/F then except Verne. I liked the book, but even then, the [spoilers] end didn’t entirely work for me.
What I liked mostly was Meg, and that the story was really hers.

In the book, they clearly didn’t have much if any control over that. “Going to Camazotz was a complete accident. I never intended even to leave our own solar system. I was heading for Mars.”
But you’re right, how they thought they could choose Mars is unexplained. And clearly by the time Mr. Murry tessers, they’ve got little if any reason to think someone who tessers away can successfully tesser back home, since the first guy who tessered hadn’t returned after a year.
So why did they send a second man – Mr. Murry – off into the unknown? In 1962, that question needed less answering, I think. If your context for reading the book was the early Cold War and air raid drills and the first Mercury astronauts, it just fits in. It’s not a plot hole for me because I’m from that era.

@WaterGirl: Re the ‘trilogy’, as others have said, the movie is just A Wrinkle In Time.
It’s not really a trilogy, which I would define as a unified story spread over three books. The other books are just sequels. Nothing wrong with sequels, but in this case: A Wrinkle In Time is one of my favorite books ever, and I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve re-read it. The sequels are OK but forgettable, IMHO: check them out of the library, read them once, return them, done.

@Yarrow: I was working at Murrayfield stadium for the Scotland-England match and got to see the last part of the game from trackside. Like most Scots I expected the team to choke at the end and lose gloriously but someone lost the script.
The tram back into the city centre was jam-packed with jubilant Scots fans, rocking from side to side as they celebrated. It didn’t QUITE tip over.

@WaterGirl:
Worse than that, even. Destroying public schools has long been deVos’ mission — she wants all kids to have a “choice” between Hardcore Fundivangelical Indoctrination and… nothing. Warehousing for the schools-to-prisons pipeline, for “those” people, i.e. everyone who is not part of Betsy deVos’s barony. And she wants us taxpayers to pay for both of those choices, but not to have any chance of escaping the Fundivangelical cult through proper education.

@Corner Stone: Trump started campaigning LITERALLY the day he took office. He filed the paperwork with the Federal Election Commission to run in 2020 just hours after he was inaugurated.
Sooooo… if and when the next Supreme Ct. Justice steps down or dies, surely Mitch McConnell will hold the seat vacant “until the American People decide who will be their next President”. Just like he did for practically all of the last election cycle. Right?

Post-Gazette endorsed Saccone, because he’s “moderate” and Lamb will vote for impeachment. The P-g’s cowardly non-endorsement during the presidential race was strike one. Their racist MLK day editorial was strike 2. Endorsing Saccone? Strike 3. I renewed my subscription for a year last month, I’ll be cancelling it now.

@Yarrow: Fortunately NBC Sports is doing better than how they handled the Olympics coverage.

@Ruckus: “At the price of the ticket lamh said they were paying, I could do an 8 hour layover at the Detroit airport. And with a smile on my face.”
We operate two disc golf courses and a pro shop only 15 minutes from Detroit Metro. We get customers coming in who are on long layovers at the airport.

@Robert Sneddon: That must have been fantastic! Scotland have improved a lot this last year.
@Adam L Silverman: Aren’t they just bringing across the feed from the UK? That’s the best way not to muck it up.

@TerryC:
I must admit I haven’t been to the Detroit airport in probably 20 yrs. It was not my favorite airport, among quite a few not favorites. But I seem to remember that it was not well cared for back then. And it begs the question, what if you aren’t a golfer? On a similar note I have to confess that my hometown airport LAX is no dream destination either. It’s almost always crowded, for the number of people it puts through it’s way too small, it looks like it was designed in the 50s by Buck Rodgers, on a hangover…….
