Sunday garden threads will soon be starting, so we’ll be expecting to see some garden pictures ?

How the hell you got that much basil on March 2?

Nice work! I haven’t graduated to starting seedlings. I either plant the seeds in the ground (lettuce, beans, squash, etc) or buy seedlings (tomatoes, peppers). One of these days, everything from seeds.

Just beautiful.
Internet just back. Winds knocked it (and cable) out for a few hours.

Seeing coddled seedlings always reminds me of my early ’80s college days, and my boyfriend starting up a bunch of pot plants under a growing lamp in his dorm room. They were at the foot of his bunk bed and doing very well. Then one day he climbed into his top bunk with a glass of water in his hand. He slopped it, spilling onto the lamps, which cause the light-bulbs to explode, shredding the poor little baby plants.
A sad day.

Glad to see you’re putting those overalls to good use, Cole.
Hoe that row and tote that bale, brother.
My cymbidiums have some pods up, but the wind shook a few off this week ?

John, I can’t grow anything, but I do love reading the weekly garden threads. You would seem to be a prime candidate. Hope to see you Sunday morning. Your little seedlings are beautiful and life-affirming.

@rikyrah: Poor kitty! Of course, I had the same reaction to that movie scene.
@p.a.: I would only grow cilantro from seed. It bolts for pretty much no reason at all. If you want it all summer, sow it every week or two. The bolted plants are always good for the compost heap.
Bolting isn’t triggered by heat, it’s triggered by hours of sunlight.
Any “crop” suceptable to “bolting” can be easily managed with shade cloth.

I may end up stealing these pics for Sunday’s Garden Chat.
Raised beds in your new garden, right? *Much* easier on aging joints!
(I pretty much gave up growing basil when I discovered that Trader Joe’s pesto is “good enough” for our taste buds. The sunny space for half a dozen herb plants now hosts another couple of tomato root pouches.)
Take some good heritage Tomato’s, like Krim’s, and slice them up.
Place them on a plate, cover with soft provone cheese, chopped fresh basil,
Salt and pepper, drizzle with balsamic vinigar and good olive oil.
When at room temp, devour.

I got a Vietnamese Coriander/Cilantro plant last summer, and it is fab. It’s got all of the coriander/cilantro goodness, but with a hot bite. Definitely an interesting add to lots of dishes. Right now the plant is covered in well over 1 foot of snow, and I hope it makes a comeback when the snow goes away.
I think this is fabricated (the cat is being stimulated by something other than Bernard Herrmann’s music and Hitch’s great suspense direction), but it’s hilarious nonetheless!

30 years ago they said cats couldn’t watch TV because cats eyes saw better than humans and to them the pictures were a bunch of dots and not recognizable. It did seem like my cats never watched nor did my friends. Now TV’s keep getting higher and higher resolutions and cats do watch.

@p.a.: it’s a winter crop around here but it does not tolerate the once a decade hard freeze.

Dispute the notion that cats can’t see identifiable objects on tv. No one who saw our late goddess, Miss Piggy, zeroing in for at least 15 minutes on a fantasy movie which featured the skittering of mice filmed in closeup, would think she was seeing meaningless dots. Those were the concentrating orbs of a working predator. This was a good 12 yrs ago, so no new tech was involved

Looking good, especially that big basil plant. What all is in the seed starter cells?

Can’t wait to see your first real garden in your new back yard!

Anyone have luck with cilantro? I buy plants, and they bolt as I’m packing the soil around them ?
Mike J
@p.a.: I just buy Dawn liquid. Gets the dishes cleaner.

Go Cole.
You Are Going To Rock It?

@p.a.: It grows fine for us here in SoCal in the winter, when it’s cooler. Above a fairly low threshold of heat it bolts no matter what we do.

@p.a.: The plant bolts when the soil warms up, usually into the 80s. If you live in the south the seasons about over.
