I have no idea where anyone is…and I have nothing interesting to share tonight. It’s snowing and freakin’ cold here at the moment, I spent the day cleaning and then got sucked into Travelers on Netflix. I really liked it, but I’m not sure I can stick around for 24 episodes.

I’m getting used to my new phone. I got an Essential Ph-1 a few months ago during a sale at Amazon and finally spent the time to transfer everything from my LG V10 to it today. So far, I like it a lot. It’s fast, well made, and running a pretty much stock version of Android 7.1.1. The camera is Ok (I haven’t taken any outdoors shots with it yet) – not as horrible as some early reviews lead me to believe.
One minor annoyance is that the front glass is slightly crowned so the glass screen protector I got for it doesn’t fit perfectly flat on it. Everything still works, and I’m sure it’s better protection than a thin sheet of plastic, but the gaps at the edges are aesthetically annoying.
I haven’t tried the 360 degree camera yet. I probably won’t be using it much.
I got it for $400 with the 360 camera. I’m quite happy with it so far. The smaller size than the V10 is welcome. It’ll be great if it gets the Oreo 8.1 upgrade as scheduled.
Cheers,
Scott.

I spent the day at an antiquarian book fair with a friend of mine, which confirmed that I have very expensive taste in books. The cheapest thing I liked was $200; the most expensive was $3,500.
I did finally find a signed copy of Lois McMaster Bujold’s Shards of

Mrs. Ajabu & I are currently on our annual migration to Mobile. AL for Mardi Gras.
Contrary to NOLA marketing, it actually originated in Mobile. (Mrs. A’s hometown)
We attended the formal ball last night – my least favorite part – and intended to go to the various parades through Tuesday but it’s raining like crazy so we’ll likely head home Monday AM.
Oh, well. At least we drove from Atlanta rather than fly in from St. Croix (our normal pre-move to the states pattern.)

Travellers was kinda cool IMO.
Slow start, but I’m old and kinda used to that, so when they started amping things up, the character building done early on pays off large and you really begin to see how a plan like theirs can go sideways when you begin to see the fractures in the Grand Plan. The dissent and chaos that ensues is kinda cool to watch.
For the budget the show had, it’s a really impressive effort.

Drove two hours to a funeral this morning in rural Wisconsin. My partner’s uncle died a few days ago. It was a brisk one degree when we drove out there, but at least it was sunny!
The funeral was OK, I’m not Catholic so the rituals seem unfamiliar, but the uncle’s four surviving adult daughters gave some really nice eulogy/reflection/memories before the mass.
We had some church-lady lunch and then traded fun stories at the aunt’s house before the two hour drive home.
I didn’t know the uncle that well, but he seemed very nice, and he and his wife threw a hell of a 50th wedding anniv party 9 years ago on the farm-ette they lived on then. Live folk music and all.
He will be missed. And my partner’s mom I think is starting to feel the tick-tick-tick (though thankfully she’s in great shape – but her kin in her generation are starting to depart).
Going to bed early tonight after a rather full day.

I never thought about that. I don’t do religion so I never made the obvious connection.
I do know, however, that when I met & married Mrs. Ajabu I was kind of surprised to find that A) she was an active Catholic and B) there’s a very large Black Catholic community in Mobile.
Here’s a Wikipedia excerpt re:
“Bienville went on to found the settlement of Mobile, Alabama in 1702 as the first capital of French Louisiana. In 1703 French settlers in Mobile established the first organised Mardi Gras celebration tradition in what was to become the United States. The first informal mystic society, or krewe, was formed in Mobile in 1711, the Boeuf Gras Society. By 1720, Biloxi had been made capital of Louisiana. The French Mardi Gras customs had accompanied the colonists who settled there. In 1723, the capital of Louisiana was moved to New Orleans, founded in 1718.The first Mardi Gras parade held in New Orleans is recorded to have taken place in 1837.”

@Corner Stone: I watched True Blood for the following reasons i. order from lease to most important (i.e. Hotness)
Sookie & Bill – bleh…so boring i join them as one thing
Hoyt & Jessica – I really did love this couple (??spoiler alert??hated what they did to them, but they fixed it in the end)
Lafayette & Tara – Love them! more so Nelsan Ellis…he was so good that he turned a character that was killed off in the first book into the heart and soul, really, of the entire show. Oh boy and did he know how to chew up some scenery and deliver a line! Tara & Lafayette reminds me sooo much of me and my boy cousins relationship out here on the bayou.
Alcide – Joe Manganello (sp?). horrible acting but mahn…muscles for days, and as someone who’s no small girl…Joe M even made me feel dainty…LOL
Jason Stackhouse – Yum-yum-yummy! Dumb as a box of rocks but oh so easy on the eyes Jason was dumb AF, but Keanten player him with a heart of gold , oh and they never met a scene where they couldn’t find a way to have Ryan Kwanten shirtless or sexing up some chick (or dude…which brings me to my FAVORITE reason to watch True Blood)
Eric Northman, or Vampire Eric as my friends and i like to call him!!! Alexander Skarsgaard, was sex on a stick on the show, and Gawd bless Alan Ball who allowed the vampires and werewolves (& the other supernatural beings) to let their freak flags fly!!! No wimpy twinky twinkling broody vamps on TB and thank gawd for it! The scene with Vampire Eric & Jason Stackhouse???!!!

Jason Stackhouse kills me in that he just can’t be anything but dumb and honest and earnest. Good for him, I guess.
I still say Tara was the worst character in the ensemble. She was weak, petulant, easily manipulated and just basically an anchor to whoever she was attached to at the time.
I think it’s funny that on the series promo graphics it shows Vampire Eric and not weaksauce Bill. I’d take Jessica or Violet pretty much any day even though they cray AF.

Travelers is okay enough. One of those series to keep around as a stand by and come back to now and again to see an episode or two when nothing else is grabbing you.
If you like that you might also like Colony (also Netflix), another decently done but not spectacular one to have on stand by.
If you have Amazon Prime, Charlie Jade. Exceptional take on an otherwise doddering SF trope. May not float yer boat at first but stick with it, the journey is worthwhile.

My sister, who doesn’t like comic book movies, got jealous and asked why i don’t invite her, so to shut her up, i was looking at 2 of my local theatres (the 2 big one that most folks go to) to see if there were anymore seats available (majority of the movie are now reserved seating) Thursday and Friday and discovers that both evening shows on both fays are basically sold out except the close up (1st row) seats!!! My refrigerator started acting goofy this past week. The motor was flipping on and off and the temperature was slowly rising. The lights on the front panel were acting strange and water wasn’t dispensing. So I called a refrigerator repair man. He took one look and said “burnt out motherboard”. So he replaced the motherboard and everything worked.
The board cost $189. The guy told me that motherboard failure was the most common problem he fixed . He carried nine of them in his truck , and just the day before he had used five of them and my brand – GE – failed the mast often. What makes it worse is that there was a company selling refurbished boards, but not anymore . GE now requires him to turn in the old board before he can purchase a new replacement board, so you can only buy it from GE and refurbished boards are no longer available.

Yeah, enjoying it, mostly. Fairly well-done sci-fi for the screen (that alone is quite unusual, so says this lifelong sci-fi literature fan). But damn their sound editing for dialog sucks for some of the characters, which seriously hampers the enjoyment. Only a couple episodes in just yet, hoping they kill off Ortega soon since she’s such a cringingly-trite character and her mumble-mouth “accent” is often unintelligible.
Still, Altered Carbon’s been better so far than the 4th season of Black Mirror was. That was disappointing — every one of the episodes from the first 3 seasons was better than any of the 4th season’s episodes. Lost the muse, jumped the shark, something. First 3 seasons were pretty damn good, though; a Twilight Zone for the 21st century.

Probably dead thread but we are getting ready for Tuesday’s Carnevale in Putignano, very political, sometimes anti-clerical, often slightly obscene, the floats and costumes are amazing. The arrogance, the willingness to make huge mistakes with nary a correction, the ability to distort what’s important about a story, the condescention. The Wrongness of the Times.
