On the Road is a weekday feature spotlighting reader photo submissions.
From the exotic to the familiar, whether you’re traveling or in your own backyard, we would love to see the world through your eyes.
Good Morning All,
This weekday feature is for Juicers who are are on the road, traveling, or just want to share a little bit of their world via stories and pictures. So many of us rise each morning, eager for something beautiful, inspiring, amazing, subtle, of note, and our community delivers – a view into their world, whether they’re far away or close to home – pictures with a story, with context, with meaning, sometimes just beauty. By concentrating travel updates and tips here, it’s easier for all of us to keep up or find them later.
So please, speak up and share some of your adventures and travel news here, and submit your pictures using our speedy, secure form. You can submit up to 7 pictures at a time, with an overall description and one for each picture.
You can, of course, send an email with pictures if the form gives you trouble, or if you are trying to submit something special, like a zipped archive or a movie. If your pictures are already hosted online, then please email the links with your descriptions.
For each picture, it’s best to provide your commenter screenname, description, where it was taken, and date. It’s tough to keep everyone’s email address and screenname straight, so don’t assume that I remember it “from last time”. More and more, the first photo before the fold will be from a commenter, so making it easy to locate the screenname when I’ve found a compelling photo is crucial.
Have a wonderful day, and enjoy the pictures!
Thanks to an enhancement from Major Major Major Major, the back-end form mechanics are improved, so we start this week with more from Le Comte…’s trip to Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, etc.
But first – mot sure who else is as jammed about Tuesday’s launch of the SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket as I am, but folks, this is really a big step in history. Launch window begins at 1:30 pm EST and I’ll be glued to a screen or two with at least one eye, no matter what else is going on!
I hope this is a week we look back on in awe, and that this launch starts something inspirational: a more concrete vision of neartime space exploration and habitation possibilities. It’s really exciting!
Today, pictures from valued commenter Le Comte de Monte Cristo, fka Edmund Dantes.

Cambodia is mostly a benign dictatorship in the form of a constitutional monarchy with some democratic-appearing structures. The monarch is well-liked and gay, the head of government a former member of the Khmer Rouge who has held power for decades. We were both ill, so we took very few photos in Phnom Penh

Thank you so much Le Comte de Monte Cristo, fka Edmund Dantes, do send us more when you can.
Travel safely everybody, and do share some stories in the comments, even if you’re joining the conversation late. Many folks confide that they go back and read old threads, one reason these are available on the Quick Links menu.

Great pictures! Those two countries are definitely on my list.

Hi Alain,
I AM as excited as you are about the heavy-lift Space-X Falcon. If I didn’t have other oars in the water I would head to the Cape to witness this launch, to feel the rumble of power of a heavy lift into orbit.
But if they actually do start launching them often, I’ll catch a night launch. Back when the Saturn-V was being used I was not yet accustomed to being able to travel on my own but now I am, and I fully intend to catch this item onto my bucket list.
The pictures are good, Le Comte de Monte Cristo, fka Edmund Dantes, thanks for sharing them with us.
And How About Them Iggles !! My friend who grew up in Philly could only reply to my congrats email with “I can’t even speak. See you soon.” I think he was nearly overcome. We’re meeting March 1 to see Baha and the Sea of Cortez. I very much hope there will be good pictures.

@J R in WV:
Yesterday, I hiked in a park west of the San Fernando Valley adjoining the place(the Santa Susana Field Laboratory) where they tested the engines for the Saturn-V(and Space Shuttle). I grew up about 15 miles to the west and still have vivid memories of the first the roar and then the shaking.

These are the same pics as last week.

I remember these. They are still beautiful

Yup, deja vu, but worth seeing again.
Good morning, jackals.
And WTG Eagles! Happy with the result; New England has a lot of Super Bowl rings. Share the wealth.

@raven: Yeah, I though I’d seen them before.

@raven: are they? Sorry, fixed form and wasn’t sure what had published successfully. I’ll try to prevent any more repeats

@Alain the site fixer:
They’re nice pictures. I’m sure nobody really minded seeing them again.

@Alain the site fixer: Aw no reason to apologize.

It’s all good. This was one of my favorite set of pictures.

But still beautiful.

Hi, Alain. Can you look and see if my other Kiev photos are around somewhere? Back when I sent them, I accidentally submitted the form with only the first photo and description, which is what got published at the time, and then I re-submitted with a whole set of photos.
I am definitely looking forward to the Falcon Heavy launch. If I didn’t already have a trip planned for this weekend, I’d probably be there.

@Redshift: I’ll look later this week as I’m away from hime and get back late Tuesday.

Travel: We’re off on our Third Annual Snowbird Road Trip. Landed at Ft Clinch State Park in Fernandina Beach yesterday afternoon. Three-day completely uneventful trip this year: no campsite hookup problems, frozen propane lines, lost wheels, flat tires or bent axles this trip. Yay!
Will send iPhone pix if we see anything photogenic in the next 4 weeks.

@J R in WV: Thanks for the Space-X news. We just hit FL, I’ll have to find out about visibility from up here on the Jax coast.

Trump: “Little Adam Schiff, who is desperate to run for higher office, is one of the biggest liars and leakers in Washington, right up there with Comey, Warner, Brennan and Clapper! Adam leaves closed committee hearings to illegally leak confidential information. Must be stopped!”.
When Paul Newman found his name included on Nixon’s “enemies list”, he released a statement accepting it as he would an Academy Award (that is, as a great honor. Which it was). Shiff should have that tweet by the Trumpster framed and displayed prominently in his congressional offices. Hell, he should have it printed on his business cards and carved on his tombstone..

@Redshift: The preferred spelling is “Kyiv.”

Oh yay!!
We absolutely LOVED the Reunification Palace when we were in HCMC. It is filled with all kinds of neat mid-century architecture and gadgetry. It was part of our guided tour (which also included the Post Office, the Notre Dame Cathedral, the War Museum and a Buddhist temple) and it was probably the highlight of our day and the For anyone who goes to HCMC, I really recommend you do a tour of it.

@frosty: Welcome to my town Frosty! Ft. Clinch is a great park. If you like chamber music, our festival is in full swing. I saw Chick Corea last week and the Miro Quartet plays this Friday. Reply back if you would like any ideas on new restaurants since you last visit or other goings on. I hope you have a lovely time. Sorry about the chilly weather.

@frosty: See what’s left of American Beach.

@frosty:
I think those launches are visible clear from the west coast of FLA, so you should have a great view from where you are. You’re less than 200 miles away, and it goes clear to orbit. You could take a tour down south an hour or so for a better view, even.

@Steve in the ATL: LOL! Updated recently enough, I hope.
ETA. Looks like Philly Man is giving Florida Man a good challenge though.

@Munsell McPhillips: Got an old HS friend here. She’s taking us to the Salty Pelican tomorrow night.
ETA: Chilly? It was 18 overnight in NC our first night. I can deal with mid-50s.

@raven: I’ll look it up, thanks.
