Corner Stone
Al Riverboat Ron to the rescue!
FlyingToaster
Did anybody even bother to watch? I just kept checking Boston.com, and returning to the other shit I’m doing.
Corner Stone
For the elebentieth time – I have had no idea what a catch is for the last two years.
Mnemosyne
No Superb Owl here. We’re eating Chinese food and watching “The Good Place” and “Drunk History” on the DVR.
Corner Stone
They call him a runner but Jesse James was not. This is a mindblowing set of rules to determine a catch.
Steeplejack
Just fuck you at this point. Why bother? Call it “Late Night Sunday Thread” or something.
debbie
@FlyingToaster:
Only the first half. I’m hoping that if I stop watching, the Eagles will win.
Peale
There’s too much time left. Egad. Isn’t there some rule where we can shave off time
Corner Stone
They keep saying what a game this is. It’s not. I’ve been doing laundry since halftime and don’t feel like I missed anything.
Nicole
How is “Altered Carbon” so far? I love the premise.
Corner Stone
Welp. That may do it.
efgoldman
Over/under on this game was 48-48.5. Blew buy it very early Hope the books took a bath.
And if they don’t clarify and simplify the catch/receiver/runner/goal line plane rule, if nothing else the odds makers are going to look at who’s officiating and adjust the lines accordingly. Not to mention pissing off the fan base.
[ETA: And not just Corner Stone]
Ah well, can’t win ’em all. It’s been a helluva run.
Peale
@Corner Stone: you’ve forgotten the towels in the upstairs bathroom again, though.
Steeplejack
@Corner Stone:
Srsly.
eclare
Posted downstairs: holy shit!
Omnes Omnibus
@Corner Stone: By my understanding of the rule, it was easily a catch. OTOH, I am sitting alone in my living room in WI and not getting big money to make those decisions.
efgoldman
Foles just made himself a supertanker full of simoleons. He won’t settle for backup money.
efgoldman
@Omnes Omnibus:
Right. Most would agree. But how is it different from the one in the Pats-Steelers game?
Omnes Omnibus
@efgoldman: Different officials.
ETA: I did not see the Pats-Steelers game.
Corner Stone
@efgoldman: PHI is not going to pay him top shelf money. Where else does he go? The Browns? Jets? MIA?
No Drought No More
I well recall how strange the old AFL uniforms first looked, and looked down on the league even after the merger in ’66. It wasn’t Namath and the Jets that changed my mind, either; it was Namath and the Jets, Len Dawson and the Chiefs, and Bob Griese and the Dolphins. I considered the Steelers dynasty as reflecting equally well on the old league, too, and still do. I remember how very pleased I was when the Raiders whipped the Eagles, but barring Super Bowl with them in I root for the NFC team. So with 48 seconds remaining, I say: go Eagles! Congrats- I hope- to their long suffering fans.. they deserve one.
WaterGirl
Is it still possible for the Patriots to win? (hoping the answer is no.)
JCJ
@Peale:
Your comment has my wife and me laughing. Oh my goodness we both have done that so often.
Omnes Omnibus
@WaterGirl: Mathematically, yes.
WaterGirl
@Omnes Omnibus: How about with new math? (still hoping the answer is no.)
Spanky
@WaterGirl: A miraculous touchdown and more miraculous 2 point conversion sends the game to overtime.
Nagahappen.
Corner Stone
I think Gronk is still suffering from that cheapshot he got vs Jacksonville.
efgoldman
@Corner Stone:
No, not for a backup. Similar problem that the Pats had with Garoppolo. I can’t imagine the Jags think Bortles is their future. Ravens, maybe? How much do they still owe Flacco? I ain’t studied upon it.
Shalimar
Looking at ESPN gamdcast on phone. Their top highlight from a 74 point game is stil Brandin Cooks’ head injury.
Omnes Omnibus
@WaterGirl: The answer is no.
ant
Tell me more about how you make it.
I’ve tried several times going off the recipe on the high heel gourmet web page, and it was a failure everytime.
I think next time I will try using a commercial thai curry paste bought at a local asian market.
How do you do it?
Omnes Omnibus
Good for former Packer Doug Pederson.
japa21
@Omnes Omnibus: Agree totally. Class act.
WaterGirl
@Spanky: Yay! (sorry, Tom)
Suzanne
Oh, thank God it’s over.
Corner Stone
Hope he doesn’t lose his hat.
RobertDSC-Mac Mini
Disappointed we didn’t win. Congrats, Philly. Enjoy.
GregB
Let the Eagles soar!
Lapassionara
@Suzanne: Yes.
donnah
Hurry up with This is Us, plz.
rikyrah
CONGRATS TO THE EAGLES!
Ceci n est pas mon nym
@FlyingToaster: I’ve been keeping it going in one tab while doing other stuff in other tabs.
It is now as you can imagine rather noisy on the streets here. Yelling, fireworks, more yelling, more fireworks. And this is the suburbs. Hard to envision what’s going on in South Philly about now.
patrick II
So, what are Nick Foles, Superbowl champion quarterback, chances of starting next year?
Bobby Thomson
Man, Collinsworth is a massive douche.
BruceFromOhio
Bwahahahahahahhhahahahaa
David ??Merry Christmas?? Koch
If Seattle and Atlanta had just ran the ball, Pats would have lost 5 straight SBs
Jim, Foolish Literalist
I always root for the underdog. So I’m happy with the score, but… I’m not proud of it, but I think I’m happier that the Krafts can suck it and trump can’t tweet about his friends, though I’m sure Lurie (isn’t that his name?) is a trumpist
@donnah: IIRC the trophy presentation etc will take at least an hour
Tilda Swintons Bald Cap
At long last our national nightmare is over.
Sab
In NE Ohio. Some idiot is setting off firecrackers after Suberb Owl. Who around here actually cared who won? Maybe just glad it’s over? Maybe cared about Puppy Bowl?
rikyrah
@donnah:
I’m not ready for the upcoming episode of This Is Us.
Bobby Thomson
@David ??Merry Christmas?? Koch: this.
Barbara
I watched the end because it was still close.
HumboldtBlue
Yeah, you keep stirring your yogurt chutney, we’ll be over here celebrating.
Well, me and the cat.
But at least he’s fierce.
2018 — bought weed at the corner weed shop (lemon meringue), Eagles win Super Bowl.
Beats last year.
debbie
I knew they’d win if I stopped watching!
hellslittlestangel
@Ceci n est pas mon nym: Lots of noise, but, so far, no fatalities.
CaseyL
That was one hell of a game! Cris Whatsisname kept pissing me off with his unabashed Brady worship, and continues to piss me off with his insistence that the Philly touchdown wasn’t one. (At the very least it would have been a first down, just based on the three steps the player took with the ball under full control.)
But, FSM, that was a terrific game.
Villago Delenda Est
Fuck off and die, Bellichick and Brady AND Donald fucking Trump.
efgoldman
@WaterGirl:
He’ll get over it (as I will). As I said above. it was a great run. And I remember very well the really bad, sad, laughable (for some definition of laughable), embarrassing years, which far outnumber the great years, still. In those seasons we were glad to settle for the occasional mediocrity.
Any Pats fan who doesn’t understand how stupidly, incredibly lucky we’ve been to watch it should give back his Brady jersey.
? ?? Goku (aka The Hope of the Universe) ? ?
@Sab:
I’m just happy the Patriots lost
Bobby Thomson
God that was sweet seeing the Eagles score on the same play that Brady fucked up. Fuck that guy.
Corner Stone
Hope PHI refuses to visit the WH. As a team.
Litlebritdifrnt
YAY Eagles win! Okay I am now going to bed (it is 3:28 here) if anyone expects me up before 2pm tomorrow forget about it.
HumboldtBlue
@patrick II:
Nil. At least immediately. All comes down to that knee.
PsiFighter37
Watching Tom Brady lose is so, so sweet.
SRW1
The Eagles have landed.
Bobby Thomson
@Villago Delenda Est: this, man.
Ceci n est pas mon nym
Actually, I wasn’t watching the game as closely as all that for a couple of quarters. From halftime till around the end of Q3, we were watching a documentary on Netflix about Aardman Studios that originally aired on the BBC in 2015. Amazing collection of talent.
Bobby Thomson
@Corner Stone: yeah, that won’t happen. But fuck the Patriots and Brady and Belichik and Bush and Trump. God this is so fucking awesome.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
@donnah: never mind, they’re saying 14 minutes.
gene108
EAGLES!!!!!!!!!!!!!
MisterForkbeard
@Bobby Thomson: I don’t even like football and I’m happy about it. :)
donnah
@rikyrah:
Oh, I know, but I don’t want to see it after everyone’s talked about it. It’s been a long time in the making. And I have tissues on hand!
FlyingToaster
@Ceci n est pas mon nym: In Bwahstin, they close Kenmore Square at the beginning of 4th quarter; fill the blocks leading in with horse cops and riot police, and make everyone go the fuck home.
The first year the Pats won, some outtatown yahoos and BU students collectively tipped over parked cars in Kenmore and set them on fire. Which pretty much pissed off EVERYBODY in the Hub, with loud demands to “DO SOMETHING”. So no parking in Kenmore after about 4 pm; all bars black out curtains in their windows at 6pm, and cordons for the drunkards to walk through to get to parking garages / T stops. I assume the MBTA turns the 57 bus around at Packards Corner, and doesn’t let it into Kenmore.
We never had problems in the burbs (some honking, some illegal fireworks at the VFW, nothingburger stuff), and it was fine downtown, but the Kenmore area went to shit every time the Sox or Pats won.
If the Celtics or the Bruins win, they have to shut down the Garden area (West End/North End/Haymarket nexus), as well as Kenmore. Greasing the lightpoles would be dramatically insufficient.
Jeffro
@Bobby Thomson: omg seconded
debbie
@Ceci n est pas mon nym:
Loved them since Wallace and Grommit.
Scuffletuffle
Very satisfying game…second favorite play: watching the ball batted out of Brady’s hand. Laughed my fat ass off.

@donnah: I have been wanting to know, but this will be so sad that I don’t really want to watch it.

@Ceci n est pas mon nym:
Ooh, I’ll have to look that up. Big Nick Parks fan. Title?

@Nicole: I literally finished the book Friday and watched the first episode yesterday. While the show seems pretty fun, I have a hard time judging if it’s told well, since I just read it. My husband says it’s confusing, FWIW.
JR
@Jim, Foolish Literalist: Lurie is a relatively non wingnutty owner. He donated to HRC, IIRC. He’s still probably a douche but beats the hell out of Jerry Jones et al.
Lapassionara
@debbie: Same here, although I thought it would likely be a replay of last year.
ETA happy to see I was wrong
Jim, Foolish Literalist
Villago Delenda Est
@JR: Jerry Jones is the worst. Makes the Krafts look like reasonable folk.
Nicole
@Jim, Foolish Literalist: The Eagles owner actually contributed to Clinton‘s campaign. $2700, the maximum an individual could contribute.
For an owner, he’s also been pretty supportive of players choosing to protest during the anthem. Choosing his words carefully, but it’s clear from statements he doesn’t have a problem with it.
How I know this when I don’t watch football, I have no idea. Probably because I visit Deadspin regularly.
Villago Delenda Est
It seems that sending Chip away did the trick. Congrats Iggles.
NotMax
Early reviews of Altered Carbon were not propitious. Essentially boiled down to ‘Blade Runner done wrong,’ with gratuitous helpings of T&A.
Corner Stone
@JR:
You know when you’re watching TrueBlood on TV and someone stakes a vampire? That pile of schmutz and blood beats the hell out of Jerry Jones.
raven
The Bohdi won the pool!!!
Nicole
@Major Major Major Major: Thanks. I imagine we’re probably going to watch it. I haven’t read the book yet though.
Villago Delenda Est
OT, but the Vichy Times, with no supporting evidence but one constituent, seems to believe that Nunes need not worry about losing his seat.
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/02/us/devin-nunes-memo-california.html
When this is all over, the VIchy Times needs to pay a real price.
Corner Stone
@Villago Delenda Est: The best part of this win is that they rebuilt the PHI team significantly after Chip left. So this isn’t a holdover win. This exposes Chip again. Which is nice.
CaseyL
And for once the Super Bowl TV ads were a lot of fun. I laughed a lot at the running Tide gag.
WaterGirl
@raven: The Bohdi won! How much? Is he going to that at the bakery tomorrow?
Villago Delenda Est
@NotMax: Oh, so they’re trying to ape both Blade Runner and Game of Thrones? With none of the quality writing, acting, and production?
SRW1
@raven:
Extra sausages all of February?

Same thing in Amherst, for the same reason: too many drunk undergraduates
Omnes Omnibus

japa21
@CaseyL: There were several good ones. I liked the Toyota one. Real slap at Trump. (And Miller)
Major Major Major Major
@NotMax: so like the book then.
Corner Stone
@patrick II:
There are 5 or 6 teams he could possibly start for next year. If I were Nick I would stay away from Browns, MIA and Jets. I’d look at the AZ Cards first and then move down.
efgoldman
@Villago Delenda Est:
Maybe, maybe not. Did they have any prognostication about fitting him for orange coveralls?
Jim, Foolish Literalist
you talking about the street celebrations in Philly? as long as they don’t throw batteries and leave the horses alone
gene108
@CaseyL:
The T-Mobile ad with the babies was my favorite.
Corner Stone
@debbie: MVP! MVP! MVP!
Gin & Tonic
@Litlebritdifrnt: Some years back I watched a Super Bowl (don’t recall who played) at the Arena club in Kyiv. No such thing as last call or closing time there, so it was pretty tough stumbling out half-drunk at nearly 0600.
Corner Stone
Kevin Hart was torched and cursing on set of NFLTV just now.
Omnes Omnibus
@Gin & Tonic: I’ve done a few from Germany. We always got the Monday as a holiday. Better that than drunk soldiers on duty.
Mike in NC
Watched the first episode of “Altered Carbon” last night and it was terrible. Print reviews have also been brutal. Now we’re trying another Netflix cop show set in Scotland called “Retribution”.

Villago Delenda Est
@Omnes Omnibus: The 8th ID once delayed the start of a CPX because the original first day was on Super Sunday. Someone on the staff got their ass handed to them for that one.
Then there was my Super Sunday on a Monday in Korea. Show up for duty at 1300.
eclare
@Ceci n est pas mon nym: I’ll have to check that out too!
Omnes Omnibus
@Adria McDowell: Not if you are that soldier’s superior officer. They get through it or they don’t.
Aleta
Worst thing about the game was when announcer said, ‘This game is as just good as the halftime show was. As good as Justin Timberlake was, this game is as good.’ No commitment to the truth.
ThresherK
@Ceci n est pas mon nym: I’ll hafta stock up on Wensleydale and watch it.

@Sab: Edinburgh is the closest city to this rural area. We always have subtitles on just to be safe and not miss the dialogue.

@efgoldman:
I watched that football game on my first (only) ship in a crew lounge. The first AFL team to beat an NFL team IIRC. I made $10, which when you only earn $90 a month is a pretty good score. Always did like Joe Namath!
I read somewhere that there were multiple $Million bets on the Eagles to win, and at least one on the Pats to win.
Adria McDowell
@Omnes Omnibus: And they stink to high heaven while doing it. They can do it away from me! Lol!
