Yo memo isn’t even suitable as bird cage liner, it is already full of sh*t.
Major Major Major Major
Laughed out loud at that one.
Who is Vinnie James?
JWR
From the last thread:
Devin Nunes: “This is just the first memo. There will be another one dealing specifically with the State Department’s role in all of this.”
The State Department = Nefarious Hillary Clinton. (One would guess.)
NotMax
@JWR
Like a bad parody of Alex Jones, innit?
Major Major Major Major
@JWR: I saw that! I figure Trump is in charge of the campaign now since they’re treating it like a reality show.
Smedley Darlington Prunebanks (formerly Mumphrey, et Al.)
Looks like Vinnie James, whoever the fuck he is, can’t take a joke. I guess that must make him a Republican.
JWR
@Major Major Major Major:
I wonder if this episode will sink in for some of these “independent” or “undecided” voters that Trump is nothing but a badly performing con-artist, out for himself, and no one but himself.
PS. And in reply to the earlier discussion of threaded comments, I don’t want ’em, and I almost always reference and quote who and what I’m replying to.

How Trump turned Sean Hannity into a conspiracy theorist
Alex Jones – Sean Hannity mashup begins at about the 1:40 mark.

@JWR: I usually don’t like threaded comments because of how they make it hard to find new posts. The ones I do like have the thread-starter posts in chronological order, with only the first two or three comments in the thread shown, with an expand button. The places where it’s expanded by default are to me unusable, especially ones like for example DailyKos where the collapse button just collapses the individual comment and not the whole thread below it.
Blech.
ETA now, if somebody made a plugin that let you toggle the two…

Yo Memo jokes – that’s the way you do it! Mock the travesty!
WaterGirl
@Major Major Major Major: Go to any thread at BooMan’s place, and you’ll see a dropdown menu at the bottom – you can pick between all sorts of options for viewing comments.
(((CassandraLeo)))
@Major Major Major Major: As mentioned in the previous thread, this (being able to toggle comment view modes) was exactly how things worked in the Usenet days. Unfortunately, no one seems to have bothered making a Web-based commenting system that does this efficiently. Evidently no one thinks there’s money in it.
Major Major Major Major
@WaterGirl: well that sounds nifty.

Oh, let me try! YoMemo so conspiratorial my tin foil hat short-circuited.
Major Major Major Major
@(((CassandraLeo))):
There are a million free web-based systems that do everything, openness and amateur contributions are integral parts of the ecosystem and philosophy behind the internet. What we actually have is this problem.
Mike J
@(((CassandraLeo))): In the Usenet days, it all depended on what program you chose to run. The great thing was there was a standard that everybody used and anybody could write a client that would work for any newsfroup.
JWR
@Major Major Major Major:
My first thought upon reading this was Dailykos. I have the same problem over there. In fact, I was reading up on how to get rid of those pop-ups telling me there’s a new comment, and found the Comment Settings link below the post and above the first comment, (on the right side.) There are 2 check boxes, one to Auto Refresh and one to Collapse On Load. I think I checked, then unchecked, the former, and those pop-ups disappeared. (i know. This has little to do with what you wrote. Just passing on a hopefully helpful bit of info.)
JGabriel
Yo Memo so misleading … it’s a double agent committing treason!

Threaded comments SUCK. I am prepared to go to war over this.
SectionH
@WaterGirl: I was sorta maybe gonna suggest that there could be options, maybe. But the only site with the non-/threaded option I know well enough to mention is Flyertalk, and it’s got a whole lot more $ to spend than BJ has. And I still use the non-threaded version.
More ppl might be less unhappy if BJ let them know that clicking on a “replied” link will take you to the comment – well we all know that – but I’m embarrassed to admit how many years it took me to get that using the fucking back button would put me Doh, back to the place I’d been.
eta I used to memorize the comment number, ffs… I used to think I was like, smart.
Major Major Major Major
@Mike J:
We have RSS for blogs and comments (plus the thousand other attempts at this standard). Problem is that you can also easily publish other things that look the same in a browser.
JGabriel
In my experience, unthreaded linear comments promote more social inclusion, because any one reading the comments has to at least skim through most of them, while threaded comments tend to create a more fractured comment community since people will frequently just concentrate on the threads they’re participating in.
So count me among the anti-threaders. Threads can work well in some contexts, but I think it would ultimately be detrimental for Balloon Juice’s community.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@eemom: Hmmm, it seems as though the resident attorneys seem most passionate about this.
JWR
@JGabriel: To get back to what this thread is supposed to be about: – Yo unthreaded linear comments is so… (?)

I’m not really too surprised at the Fox/GOP hostility towards the FBI and the CIA tbh.
I got this from David Koch’s wiki site but had remembered reading about it years ago.
“He advocated for the abolition of Social Security, the FBI, the CIA, and public schools.”
That was his 1980 platform.
(((CassandraLeo)))
@Major Major Major Major: Touché. I guess I should’ve specified that there was no such system that was used on any wide scale, but I think I’d just gotten tired of typing by that point and/or was too drained to think of noting it.
On that note, IDK how the hell it wound up being 3:30 am. I think I’ll be off to bed. G’nite.

@mskitty: Does everyone in Ohio have insomnia?
Sab
Weird night. We got that nasty cold where everyone is hacking away for six to eight weeks. My dad, age 93, didn’t do so well since the constant hacking seriously interfered with his air supply. So he got dizzy and keeled over and banged his hip. Contusion, not broken. But his doctor says those hurt like hell for a couple of weeks.
He is in a nursing home for rehab for a week or so. His nurse’s aide is hovering, freaking about him. I have a same or different bad cold, so I don’t feel like I can spend any time in the nursing home. So now I am in his house with his bereft cat. It’s an indoor/outdoor cat that lives in a tough neighborhood with other cats and some foxes, but he’s glad to be away from trapped in a house with my cats. My cats are indoor wussy cats, but he is exhausted from defending himself from four indoor cats stalking together. Cats are like teenage girls. Relentless if you aren’t part of the in-group.
It’s weird in my dad’s house. Utterly silent. His exhausted cat is sound asleep. I keep expecting the clunk of my dad’s walker, Or at least a dog snoring. Or the furnace clanking. Nada. Weird.
JPL
@Sab: This might be a perfect day for a nap. Take care of your cold. Mucinex helped me.
Sab
@JPL: I am thinking of revving up the fireplace tonight if it’s cold. Haven’t done that in twenty years. The cat might like it, if I don’t burn the house down. I guess I had better go knock squirrels out of the chimney this sfternoon.
mskitty
@Sab: Dunno – I’m maybe a thousand miles southwest of Ohio.
Enjoy your fireplace. I like cold weather … and there were maybe ten days this winter when the weather justified a turtleneck.

A sense of humor and wit are the true saving graces. These really take a bit of the edge off this appalling situation.
Citizen_X
@Smedley Darlington Prunebanks (formerly Mumphrey, et Al.):
Actually, it makes him a fascist, because lack of a sense of humor is a signal defect of authoritarians. Which is what Republicans have become now.

@Sab: I am so sorry. No one should have this nasty weird cold, and especially not people in their 90s.
I have had it since Christmas Eve and my husband is moving into the same stage as I’m in right now: a croupy cough that has made me dizzy a couple of times. I am exhausted, sick of being sick.

Yo memo so lame the track vet had to have it put down.
polyorchnid octopunch
@(((CassandraLeo))): Actually, doing so is pretty difficult. You’d have to implement a full-featured NNTP client in the browser because the server didn’t do the threading; it only kept track of the “References:” header. The clients built threads out of it. This is completely necessary because otherwise you’ll computationally whelm the server.
