Per LAPD, avoid navigation apps if ordered to evacuate fire zones, as they can steer you into neighborhoods that are literally burning (and thus seem to have clear roads).

Thoughts & prayers (yes, I know exactly how useless that sounds) for those on the Wildfire Coast. It seems miraculous that “only” one death has been attributed to these fires, as of now.

    Already Exhausted With 2017

‘Already’? I think I was exhausted with this year by the second, or certainly the third, time those fuckers tried to repeal the ACA and ‘replace’ it with some random grab-bag of bullshit.

Morning all. Still waiting for the promised snow to begin here in DC, but hoping it waits till 8 so I can dash to store for a baguette and perhaps a croissant or two. Have a great day everybody, don’t let Trump and Republicans poison your discourse or the joys of the season and family. It’s dark, but light will come!

Waiting for the snow here in southern Maryland. Got a gloomy dawn outside with heavy clouds overhead, but no flakes yet.

ETA: Looked more closely, got a few flakes now. Hopefully there will be enough on the ground by the time the kid awakens to make him happy.

Good morning everyone! I am happy happy to report Ohio Dad’s recovery from his aortic valve replacement surgery on Thursday precedes apace.

He was up and eating breakfast yesterday morning — well, picking at it: he doesn’t have much appetite yet, and I don’t think the hospital food is going to inspire any — and took two short walks, nurse and drainage bags in tow.

He is very tired of course, and things hurt, but it is amazing to think the doctors stop.your.heart. and you can live through it, and even eventually come out better for it.

I want to thank everyone again for all the support and encouragement shown me Thursday morning during the longest five and a half hours of my life, waiting for the all clear from the surgeon. We jackals have a great thing going here in our corner of internet, we have built a wonderful community, and should all be proud of ourselves for this.

When we went to the Rose Bowl in 84 we were the last plane to get out of St Looie before the blizzard shut it down. This was before Xmas so we got to the game ok but it still sucked.

Looks like we’re getting some snow here. Maybe only in the West though. It’s so cold here that I actually bought a hat. I haven’t worn a hat since my mother was dressing me. Hats mess up my naturally curly hair! Even in the dead of a freezing NY winter I got away with just ear muffs.

But yesterday, I popped into H&M, plunked my €5 down on the counter and asked them to please take the tags off. All the while muttering to myself “when did you become such a weather wuss?”

In his defense, the four keys of white in his briefcase weren’t his; he was set up. Unfortunately, he was set up by the cartel for whom he’s been laundering money. Had thanksgiving dinner with his wife and children. Was not terribly festive!

Pro tip for all you kids out there: don’t hire your attorney off of Craigslist São Paulo, and if you don’t speak Portuguese don’t hire the one attorney in Brazil who speaks no English.

3 degrees here in Northamptonshire UK. Light dusting of frost on the tops of the cars this morning but currently sunny and cold. Snow forecast for tomorrow.

Changing the subject, every time I see Trump in a formal setting Pence is standing behind him. I don’t remember the VP being quite so ubiquitous during previous administrations. Is my memory playing tricks on me or is he more high profile and, if so, why?

Also, Pence swore in, I think, the new Head of Homeland Security even though Trump was present. Is that normal?

    FYI.

Middle East politics dominated Secretary of State Rex Tillerson’s agenda Friday: He met with the Lebanese prime minister who took back his resignation, listened to allies criticize the administration’s Jerusalem decision and chided Saudi Arabia to be more “measured” and “thoughtful” in waging war in Yemen.

After a day of talks, in which every leader who appeared publicly with Tillerson expressed opposition to President Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, the secretary predicted it will take two years or longer before the U.S. Embassy can be physically relocated from Tel Aviv.
    [snip]
The Paris stop concluded Tillerson’s four-day visit to Europe, which included stops in Brussels and Vienna. All three cities host multiple U.S. diplomatic missions responsible not only for the country in which they are located but for international organizations, like NATO in Brussels and the Organization for Security and Co-operation (OSCE) in Europe in Vienna. Only one of the nine potential ambassadorships is filled by a Senate confirmed appointment, underscoring the slow pace of filling senior positions in the State Department. Source

President Trump weighed in on news about Beverly Young Nelson, one of the women who accusing U.S. Senate candidate Roy Moore of sexual misconduct. Moore has denied all allegations against him.

Just another ordinary day in the US, where the Trump Administration uses the office to smear and belittle people. No one even comments on that fact that they’re getting worse but it’s true- they get nastier and more mean-spirited every week. They don’t lie less than they did a month or a year ago- they lie more- and it’s spreading. Now the whole GOP Congress lie easily and publicly about legislation they voted for.

So. Dad fell tuesday night, had emergency surgery wednesday morning (broken femur, they put in a stabilizing rod from hip to knee). My sister and I have spent much of the last three days in the hospital, taking care of him and tangling with the bureucracy. And then I felt it yesterday in the late afternoon. Sore throat, stuffed up sinuses, high temperature. Hospital flu, bless it. So I am confined home today at least. I am going to make a huge pot of chicken soup and hit the decongestants. What a freaking year.

Yep. I’ve worked for general contractors who wanted me to document every minute of my day. I always told them it was the stupidest thing I’d ever heard of as I’d spend more time telling them what I did than doing what they hired me to do (which was fix sub-contractors’ screw ups). I just flat out refused to do it. Somehow or other I never got fired for that bit of insubordination.

I went to what I call (in my head) The Republican Lawyers Christmas Party last night- that’s not the official name but that’s what it is- it’s lawyers who are active or their firms are GOP donors or connected within the state GOP and then county GOP electeds- local level- people like recorders and auditors and county clerks. They invite me and my husband every year because 1. he is a former prosecutor and 2. they like him.

Whether they are or not (questionable) they consider themselves the intellectual and moral leaders of the local county parties and very few of them supported Trump- Kasich won the primaries in these counties. They’re defensive and cranky about Trump and they wouldn’t talk about him, even though never before have they shied away from politics at one of these things- the year Kasich won it was basically a Kasich victory party. Instead we got shit like “let’s focus on what matters- family and friends”. Amusing.

I don’t know. I sat at the “fancy table” the year of the primary- older and richer- and they were all miserable – if they couldn’t have Kasich they wanted Chris Christie so maybe it wasn’t “local” so much as it was someone they consider presentable or not insane. I in no way feel sorry for them but they really aren’t Trump supporters- there’s a real divide in the GOP. It just doesn’t mean anything as a practical matter because they all fall in line at the end, but it does exist. They’re not happy. They know this is bad for the country. They just aren’t willing to act on it. It’s hard to leave a Party not just because of ideology or “tribalism” but because of real relationships. One can hate “Democrats” meaning senators or whatever and if one is locally active one can still have real relationships with local “Democrats” and want to remain in the fold not for Chuck Schumer but for 20 years of friendships.

She came over to us specifically to tell us she left the GOP and hates both Trump and Pence. Pence may actually be worse for her- she was never part of the religious faction. She doesn’t matter though- they would never appoint her to anything, Trump or no Trump, because she’s criminal defense. She’s like “the maverick” :)

Issur Danielovitch Demsky turns 101 today, but he started the birthday celebration a day early Friday by placing a phone call to his 98-year-old sister, Ida Sahr, in Schenectady.

Demsky, known to most of us as Kirk Douglas, was born in Amsterdam, NY on Dec. 9, 1916. The famous movie actor, who lives just outside of Los Angeles, was at his home Friday afternoon when he contacted his younger sister by phone. After some technical glitches were worked out, the two Amsterdamian natives were able to talk and see each other via Facebook Live.

Sorry, I don’t even know what you are speaking of.

And are there blogs/sites that you would recommend for design/organizing inspiration.

Sorry again, I don’t search the internet for “design/organizing inspiration”. If there is one thing I have learned about the internet it is that any search will turn up contradictory advice about almost any anything. So I read books and magazines, 2 of which are Fine Woodworking and Fine Homebuilding. They are both worth while and informative. I don’t read them for the technical aspects but rather for ideas of cool stuff I might do (This winter I’m going to build the wife a new dining room table based on one I saw in FW, a trestle design, pretty cool) I am not sure if they will be helpful to you or not as I am unsure of exactly what you might be looking for, but they are a place to start. @schrodingers_cat:

There was a book that had a title something like Use What You Have decorating. I found it helpful because it provided some basics about furniture arranging (balance, focal point, etc), how to hang art and photos, and other useful techniques. When I was decorating a farmhouse on a budget, I learned where the good second hand furniture stores were and how to figure out what was worth fixing and what wasn’t. The entry hall commode you posted is really just a narrow (probably upper cabinet depth) table with shaker style doors. We have stores in Maine where you can buy windows, doors, cabinets, and other case goods for really low prices. You could always repurpose a couple upper cabinets by adding a wooden counter top and a base and then painting them. I might be tempted to find a sofa or console table with shaker legs, paint it if the finish is damaged, and then either put two large baskets underneath or storage ottoman cubes which you could use for extra seating.

My taste tends to be toward simple and never cutesy country. If you want to use do a distressed finish, be careful. Too much of that style in a room feels gimmicky.

Don’t think of them as a political party. Think of them as a gang. You ask why would anyone join a gang but that was answered by Dulé Hill on West Wing. They get to be part of something, to feel like they are contributing to something, to be on a team. It doesn’t really matter what the team is about, they are part of it. It’s something, which to participants is better than nothing. And it’s self perpetuating, there is always the gang. And if you fight it they will try to decimate you. Because you are dissing the gang, and thereby them. They may not do drive bys but will it really be that much different in the end?
The republican party has sunk to being a gang. Of course they didn’t do this just last week, it’s been going on for quite a few years, but they act like a gang, one for all and all for one, and they don’t care if those outside the gang die, in fact they encourage it.
