You can download ultra-MP3s of Neil Young songs with perfect fidelity, but you’re still just listening to Neil Young.

“Rockin’ In The Free World”
There’s colors on the street
Red, white and blue
People shufflin’ their feet
People sleepin’ in their shoes
But there’s a warnin’ sign
on the road ahead
There’s a lot of people sayin’
we’d be better off dead
Don’t feel like Satan,
but I am to them
So I try to forget it,
any way I can.
Keep on rockin’ in the free world,
Keep on rockin’ in the free world
Keep on rockin’ in the free world,
Keep on rockin’ in the free world.
I see a woman in the night
With a baby in her hand
Under an old street light
Near a garbage can
Now she puts the kid away,
and she’s gone to get a hit
She hates her life,
and what she’s done to it
There’s one more kid
that will never go to school
Never get to fall in love,
never get to be cool.
Keep on rockin’ in the free world,
Keep on rockin’ in the free world
Keep on rockin’ in the free world,
Keep on rockin’ in the free world.
We got a thousand points of light
For the homeless man
We got a kinder, gentler,
Machine gun hand
We got department stores
and toilet paper
Got styrofoam boxes
for the ozone layer
Got a man of the people,
says keep hope alive
Got fuel to burn,
got roads to drive.
Keep on rockin’ in the free world,
Keep on rockin’ in the free world
Keep on rockin’ in the free world,
Keep on rockin’ in the free world.

It is an all time favorite of mine.
One more. “Kvockin on Heavens Door”, Warren Zevon, on “Keep Me in Your Heart”
All right, I lied; one more:
“The Times They Are A-changing” done in spanish as a mexican ballad. Off of the “Sons of Anarchy” soundtrack…

@Omnes Omnibus:
Which Claire? I can think of, like, three different TV shows that could apply to.
I like edgy, indie stuff, but not in that specific direction. I associate Neil Young with the 1960s through the 1980s, which doesn’t put him in the “indie, edgy” class for me. More like “golden oldies.”
(I’m trolling a little bit, and we probably have more overlap in musical tastes than I’m saying here but, really, I find Neil Young to be dull and old-fashioned.)

@jk:
I think you missed the point of the story. Reed’s lack of polish inspired others with “bad” voices to pursue a rock and roll career. Without Reed, John Lydon would not exist, on multiple levels.

An early Young composition, from Buffalo Springfield’s first album: “Nowadays Clancy Can’t Even Sing.” Vocals handled by Richie Furay (later of Balloon Juice favorite Poco!).

@Omnes Omnibus:
Understood.
Top 5 male vocalists IMHO
1. John Lennon
2. Paul McCartney
3. Mick Jagger
4. Roger Daltrey
5. George Harrison

@Mnemosyne:
Obviously, this is extremely subjective but I’ve just always enjoyed and appreciated Lou Reed’s and Neil Young’s singing.

Sweet baby Jesus. The inability to comprehend that a brilliant songwriter can possess a mediocre singing voice is…..well, I guess no worse than any other crazy shit going on today; but I thought we had a more highly evolved community here.
Then there’s this concept of “indie, edgy” didn’t exist before the 1980s, and anybody before then is dull and old, old OLD. Coming from a non-millennial no less.
Oh well. We’re all gonna die anyway.

@Omnes Omnibus:
Kind of makes one long for the days of a simple lapse of memory regarding the content of a 1980s dance mix, doesn’t it?

@jk:
You’re talking to someone (me) who thinks that “Satellite of Love” and “Dirty Blvd.” are among the greatest American songs ever written and performed, so I hear ya on Reed. I just don’t like Young. I feel like I gave him a fair chance, and he never struck a chord with me.

@Jacel:
True.
One of my favorite Dylan songs where his voice really fits: “I Want You.”

I regret turning down tickets for the Last Waltz..but am glad to have seen the Rust Never Sleeps Tour.

@joel hanes:
Naw, you just teed it up and I had to take the swing. Anyway, great guitar work and (I think) backing vocals from Neil on that song.

@Roger Moore: Mitt Romney is pretty seriously angling for a UT Senate bid. He is idolized here, and until recently the Walking Corpse was making noises about retirement while fluffing Mittens as his replacement. It would be un-mormon for Mitt to enter into an internecine battle, but otoh, mormons don’t like trump and Orrin’s polling is not good. Romney hates trump and he’d be a big improvement over the WC. Political entertainment ahead…hopefully with casualties.

I love Neil Young. Some of the most powerful songs ever, and excellent guitar work. Have seen him in concert a few times.
Voice is a bit of an acquired taste, but authentic, as is Dylan’s. While they have some phenomenal songs, N Young, Dylan, and Joni Mitchell can be hard to listen to some times (if not in the mood).
My desert island disk catalogue would include several selections by Mr. Young. Long may he run. Good guy.

@jk: I don’t care what anyone says, Lou Reed was the world’s first rapper. He was talking behind music in the mid-1960s, before NWA and other rappers were out of diapers!

Rolling Stone Channel on YouTube has a video of live performance by Neil Young of “Like a Hurricane,” filmed in Berlin concert in early 80’s. It is a must see / hear performance, just incredible guitar playing by Young, and such a great song. Find it and watch it. I am not embedding a link, afraid that would prevent the post from posting, so to speak.
