Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I’m going back to the respite thread.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

Where tasty lettuce and good mustard aren’t elitist.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn – Nancy Pelosi

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

People are complicated. Love is not.

A last alliance of elves and men. also pet photos.

This fight is for everything.

Han shot first.

Fuck if i know. i just get yelled at when i try it.

I’m only here for the duck photos.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

Reality always wins in the end.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Militantly superior in their own minds…

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if I ever tried to have some of you killed.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

Something seems odd about that, but i have been drinking.

Good luck with your asparagus.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

Not all heroes wear capes.

In case of confusion, Trump’s head is the rumpled ovoid with the gaping cloaca at the right of your screen. Well, you wanted to eat light anyways, save more room for Thursday…

Continuing the White Male Turkey theme:

Trump on Moore: "He is in total denial. I do have to say, 40 years is a long time. He has run eight races and this has never come up. The women are trump voters. Most of them are trump voters. All you can do is you have to do what you have to do. He totally denies it." pic.twitter.com/bVoVopcUWo

We think of the AL Senate race as picking a senator.

Trump probably (& not wrongly) thinks of it as picking a juror.

— Dana Houle (@DanaHoule) November 21, 2017

The GOP tax bill's bringing out my inner socialist. The sex scandals are bringing out my inner feminist. Donald Trump and Roy Moore are bringing out my inner liberal.

So Doug Jones, a lifelong prosecutor who convicted the monsters that murdered four little girls is “soft on crime,” but Roy Moore, the district attorney alleged to have molested a child and sexually assaulted a 16yo is not.

    Got it.

Charlie Pierce made the point yesterday, when SkeletorAnn Conway first called Jones “weak on crime”, that he had put terrorists in jail after forty years. Of course, to Chuck Todd’s “Good Person” KAC and the Beast she serves, the Birmingham bombings weren’t terrorism, maybe not even a crime.

Hmm, open thread? Some observations from M4-land.

    — I’m letting my novel lay fallow for a bit until I pick it up for the next draft, and it’s driving me crazy not working on it. Christmas will be just about six weeks, which seems like the right amount of time, so my present to myself will be a printout of it to maul during my Europe trip.
    — Relatedly, I’ve started using my writing-tools website to work on my webcomic. Gosh! It’s exactly what I always wanted from writing software! It’s almost like I wrote the spec.
    — Work has picked up to about 2-3 hours per day, which is still not a full day, so I’m learning Smalltalk, which seems neat.

All in all, just feeling some weird combination of pleased, restless, and nervous. End me update.

You are stepping into touchy territory here, especially with the holidays coming up.

One interesting thing that my single mother did with me is that she allowed it to be OK for me to reject the request of a hug or kiss from visiting family members I did not know or who I had just met. But having grown up in the South, I know lots of people who expect kids to “respect” elders, and to give them a hug and a kiss on demand.

ET: grown up, I did not demand that my little niece or nephew give me a hug and a kiss when my sister brought them over for a visit. But we developed a bond and they volunteered hugs and kisses. All good.

    @LurkerNoLonger:

I repeat from above: “unwanted hugs” is Lasseter’s formulation.

From a story in The Hollywood Reporter:

Sources say some women at Pixar knew to turn their heads quickly when encountering him to avoid his kisses. Some used a move they called “the Lasseter” to prevent their boss from putting his hands on their legs. A longtime insider says he saw a woman seated next to Lasseter in a meeting that occurred more than 15 years ago.

“She was bent over and [had her arm] across her thigh,” he says. “The best I can describe it is as a defensive posture . . . John had his hand on her knee, though, moving around.” After that encounter, this person asked the woman about what he had seen. “She said it was unfortunate for her to wear a skirt that day and if she didn’t have her hand on her own right leg, his hand would have travelled.”

The same source said he once noticed an oddly cropped photo of Lasseter standing between two women at a company function. When he mentioned that to a colleague, he was told, “We had to crop it. Do you know where his hands were?”

Another former insider remembers awkward encounters with Lasseter, who liked—as many in the industry do—to hug in meetings. “You’d hug him and he’s whisper in your ear, a long time,” this person says. “He hugged and hugged and everyone’s looking at you. Just invading the space.”

I don’t understand. Did these women all up and volunteer to go to ‘Nam? Did they flee to Canada with draft dodger hippie boyfriends? Did they all get married? Alien abduction?

We need an investigation. What happened to the (presumably) white women of Alabama that should have been available for Roy Moore?

It says something sad about Alabama that as Moore’s explanations get more and more ridiculous and sleazy, the more his supporters hang on tight.

You know how Republicans worship troops and police and first-responders and such? Wonder what they’ll say about this one?

A retired Alabama police officer told MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell on Tuesday that she had to keep an eye on Alabama Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore in the 1980s at local high school football games because he would regularly harass the team’s teenage cheerleaders. Faye Gary, who for 37 years was an officer at the Gadsden Police Department, explained to Mitchell that Moore’s reputation for pursuing underage girls was widely known throughout the community.

“We were also told to watch him at the ballgames, and make sure that he didn’t, you know, hang around with the cheerleaders,” said Gary.

Gary also said she learned that Moore had been barred from entering the local shopping mall because he had been “harassing” young women who worked there. Moore faces multiple allegations that he inappropriately pursued teenage girls when he was in his 30s, including allegations from two women that Moore tried to force them to have sexual contact with him when they were both under the age of consent.

White House military personnel removed amid investigation into contacts with foreign women during Trump’s Asia trip

Three military personnel have been reassigned from their White House jobs amid allegations that they had improper contact with foreign women while traveling with Trump on his recent trip to Asia, according to officials familiar with the situation.

The service members all worked for the White House Communications Agency, a specialized military unit that helps provide the president, vice president, Secret Service and other officials with secure communications.

The military is scrutinizing three Army noncommissioned officers who allegedly broke curfew during Trump’s trip to Vietnam this month, officials said.

The episode comes after four military personnel on the same White House team faced allegations related to their behavior during a trip to Panama in August with Vice President Pence. Those men — two from the Army and two from the Air Force — stood accused of taking foreign women after hours into a secure area as they were preparing for Pence’s arrival, officials said.

It’s not the unwanted hug per se — it’s that no one is willing to tell him that it’s a problem. And so it just gets worse and worse, again even if there’s not a conscious intent to harass anyone. That’s where you start getting a hostile workplace.

I want this all out in the open and I thoroughly condemn all of this conduct. But somehow mysteriously the repercussions for some assaults or harassment have been drastic whereas those for others much worse have been deflected, minimized, ignored, or bothsided in light of the former.

This is shaping up to be two things at the same time: 1) a vital and necessary project to hold people (er, men really) accountable for what men do to women in the workplace and numerous other public spaces; and 2) a ratfucking operation by the Republicans to bothsides statutory rape, sexual assault, and abuse of power committed under clearly aspirational cover with the end goal of allowing the worst actors both personally and politically to be the ones left standing.
