  16. 16
    Jerzy Russian says:

@Dorothy A. Winsor (formerly Iowa Old Lady): Is the quoted person snarking or is he serious? I don’t know what is real any more, and that is what pisses me off the most.

  17. 17

@germy: Looks that way to me. Jared too. Papa Trump too. You can see how money protects them from ever having to actually do something well.

  18. 18

I don’t fucking care how the movie “Get Out” presents it as awkward or sinister.

I SINCERELY WOULD HAVE VOTED A THIRD TERM FOR OBAMA.

  19. 19

@Jerzy Russian: I think the quoted guy (the one wondering if women really have orgasms) is real. But I’m with you. It’s hard to tell these days.

    Spanky says:

Here’s some interesting fallout from rampant Republicanism:

An Oklahoma teacher is accused of having sex with a high school student after the boy’s parents reported nude photographs and text messages on their son’s phone to authorities.

Day was hired to teach science at Yukon High School at the beginning of the school year, according to an October report by Oklahoma City-based News 9. She was among the state’s 1,500 emergency certified teachers hired without education training to help mitigate teacher shortages. It’s one of many ways Oklahoma is dealing with a deepening budget crisis that has forced class sizes to surge, art and foreign-language programs to shrink or disappear and — in many districts — schools to operate just four days a week.

  21. 21
    japa21 says:

@Spanky: To the GOP that’s all good, except maybe the sex part. They know a truly well educated populace is their worst enemy.

That pud Julian must be feeling the heat. He’s been reduced to ‘some of my best friends are lefties’ and posting pictures of himself with Chomsky, Jesse Jackson, and Michael Moore.

That train has left the station.

You’ll always have Pepe the frog, Jules.

  24. 24
    scav says:

@japa21: Don’t even know about the sex part anymore. Only problem there might be the lack of a suitable age difference and there was no phone call fronpm the DA’s office initiating the first date. (Don’t even know if the gender role switching is an issue anymore. That probably depends on voting records and if her ass sits on the right pew every Sunday.)

  25. 25
    Feathers says:

@PaulWartenberg: Term limiting Presidents has turned out to be a bad idea. Being able to just wait out eight years is one of the things that has let Republican obstruction to become a new normal.

  26. 26
    japa21 says:

@scav: That’s why I used the term “maybe”.

  27. 27
    japa21 says:

@Feathers: That’s why the GOP pushed for that amendment and why they want term limits for everything. They know that a really effective and popular Dem would keep getting elected. Probably not the same for a Republican.

  28. 28
    Villago Delenda Est says:

@Smedley Darlington Prunebanks (formerly Mumphrey, et Al.): Atrios has his head firmly up his ass on this particular topic. Normally he’s a level headed guy, but…

  29. 29
    frosty says:

@Feathers: Cuts both ways. Without term limits we would have had at least 4 more years of Reagan, , maybe 8, with all the cognitive issues etc.

  30. 30
    germy says:

Two terms of Obama drove them crazy. A third term would have made them murderous.

  31. 31

    @GregB:

Tell him the emails speak for themselves. He was planning on releasing something the Trump campaign gave him to cover the fact that he was working with the Trump campaign and mislead the public. He’s a political operative- no more “noble” than the rest of them. He can be one- there are plenty of them- but he should cut the bullshit about his higher cause. Every political operative thinks theirs is the better candidate. There’s nothing inherently superior about his opinion.

@Spanky: And the good folk of Oklahoma keep voting Republican so I guess they’re okay with all that mess.

  41. 41

@japa21: Have the Rs had one good legislative idea in the last 50 plus years?

  42. 42

    germy says:

Since late October, Kevin Spacey has been accused of varying degrees of sexual assault and harassment by over a dozen people, which has caused severe damage to his decades-long professional career.

Morrissey, however, just doesn’t see what the big deal about this whole situation is. In a new interview with the German publication Spiegel Online, the musician called all of the claims against Spacey “ridiculous,” arguing that the definitions of sexual assault and harassment have become far too broad to comprehend in the modern age. “As far as I know, he was in a bedroom with a 14-year-old. Kevin Spacey was 26, boy 14. One wonders where the boy’s parents were. One wonders if the boy did not know what would happen,” he said, according to a translation picked up by The AV Club. “I do not know about you, but in my youth I have never been in situations like this. Never. I was always aware of what could happen. When you are in somebody’s bedroom, you have to be aware of where that can lead to. That’s why it does not sound very credible to me. It seems to me that Spacey has been attacked unnecessarily.”

Although Morrissey clarified that he condemns sexual violence against any person, he said he believes that sometimes “the person referred to as a victim is merely disappointed.” Among the recent accusations made public against Spacey include the actor having a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old boy and attempting to seduce another 14-year-old boy.

  69. 69
    Brachiator says:

    @germy:

One wonders where the boy’s parents were.

This has already been answered. The kid’s mom usually went with him, and thought that he would leave the party at a reasonable time I get tired of ignorant blame games.

One wonders if the boy did not know what would happen,” he said, according to a translation picked up by The AV Club. “I do not know about you, but in my youth I have never been in situations like this.

    @germy:

Although Morrissey clarified that he condemns sexual violence against any person, he said he believes that sometimes “the person referred to as a victim is merely disappointed.”

I don’t think that Morrissey is entirely wrong here. But I think he misses the larger point. We have social taboos and laws here to guard against coercion, manipulation and exploitation.

  75. 75
    Yoda Dog says:

@germy: Well. That was quite nauseating. Now I have to move both Spacey and Morrissey from the “Pretty Cool” bin to the “Total Scum” bin… Wtf is wrong with him, the kid was 14 fucking years old?!

@Teddys Person: When I see defenses of *this* kind of misconduct, I wonder if the defender has some skeletons too. Even people willing to tolerate consensual teen-adult relationships would normally consider Spacey’s conduct criminal. It would have been serious harassment even with an adult.

  96. 96
    Ramalama says:

@Amir Khalid: Varies — between maybe $50 – $100 per year. And don’t use anything that’s free (other than something you configure yourself). I’ve had neighbors (ok: neighbours) who used the free offering – forget the name now – and it just messed everything up on their computers with spyware, malware, lot of trouble.

You could review this list of ratings to see if x or y ‘will protect me from governmental prying eyes or just TV networks’…

Sources say that Getflix only works pretty well most times but sometimes HBO and Showtime figure out what Getflix is doing and are able to thwart people using Getflix. Getflix eventually re-jiggers their code to allow it to work again. That’s a pain. But was cheaper than other offerings. Vypr VPN has worked all the time, so sources say. Easy-ish to use, too. They might offer a free trial, which might help. I’ve also heard good things about Nord VPN.

Yeah, it would be great to be able to listen in on some of the conversation.

And I guess that Brooks and Reiner have been friends for a long, long time. They used to do the 2,000 year old man comedy routine.

    Another Scott says:

@Ramalama: Nord VPN has lots of ads on the BBC News TV channel here. There’s something weird about it though – it almost looks like the dialog is dubbed (it doesn’t quite match their mouth movements). No idea about the product itself, but the ads are kinda over-the-top (“Did you know that your ISP can see exactly what web sites you visit and your exact location!!111” – as opposed to this company with legal jurisdiction in Panama, perhaps? :-/ )

A review of NordVPN – dunno how useful it is.

    Cheers,

Other defenses are probably ok, like, let’s wait for the investigation or see if there are any more accusations and if it’s a pattern, or if the apology is sincere…
