Projection: Ralph Northam (D) has been elected next governor of VA, defeating Ed Gillespie (R). #VAGOV
— Dave Wasserman (@Redistrict) November 8, 2017
This doesn’t mean Northram ran a great campaign. He shouldn’t have freaked about the Latino Victory Fund ad, because no one gives a fuck. Also too no one gives that much of a fuck about his reaction either, so it didn’t hurt him much. But you never throw your supporters under the bus. Leave that shit for Bill Clinton circa 1992.
The environment is very good for Democrats.

CNN is calling the race too tight to call. Not trying to throw a wet blanket on anyone’s celebrations but they may be a bit premature.

However much Northam wins by, Republicans will spin it as their victory, so I want a big margin to develop.

NYTimes says: “Right now, our most likely estimates span Northam +13 to Northam +2.6. “
O. Felix Culpa
Northam has a slim lead with 34% reporting. If what a commenter (forgot who) said earlier is correct, the low populations (R, of course) tend to report in first, with the higher density areas (more D) coming in later. If so, the outlook is good. Many fingers crossed.

NYT is currently forecasting Northram by 7.8% based on swings in the reported precincts. They have enough data for this to mean something (early forecasts were different but on only a tiny handful of precincts.)

Virginia is looking even better than I’d hoped. If my eyeball count is right, Dems lead in 51 of the 100 House of Delegates races. This chamber is heavily gerrymandered for the Republicans and the current seating is 66-34 for the Republicans even though VA has been (lightish) blue for several elections. I was hoping for substantive gains. If we win it, then we may be able to win even gerrymandered statehouses and that’s a gamechanger.

@O. Felix Culpa: Fairfax County is only 27% in. Northam is leading with 66% there and it’s huge. Often, in Virginia elections, the state flips Democratic right at the end of the night when Fairfax County is all in. If Northam’s leading the state at this point, that’s a good sign, at the very least.

This is good news.
The sea change that occurred when California turned from red to blue was not trumpeted with any fanfare. I don’t recall any surprise polling that indicated a fundamental realignment was in the offing, nothing like that. California’s state republican party simply drifted so far into dingbat-right territory they were (finally) perceived by most sensible Californians- even erstwhile republicans- as absolute political loons. Which is not to say they don’t still get elected, but even the ones that do are on the ropes nowadays.
Baud
Now the MSNBC guy is attacking “national Democrats.”. WTF?
japa21
@Fair Economist: I was looking at that too. Looks like a 15 seat or thereabouts swing for the Dems. Only one Dem incumbent was losing. If this happens, specially if the Dems take control of the House of Delegates (somewhat wishful thinking) the GOP will be pissing in their pants next year. And if Jones could win in Alabama I’ll start believing in Santa Claus again.

PERRY BACON JR. 8:23 PM
I think Nate is hitting the right point here: Does this kind of result push a few more Republicans in swing districts to retire? That makes holding the House harder for the GOP. Incumbents are almost always more likely to win in a tough district. Right now, we are seeing a lot of GOP retirements in the House, but many of them are members who are about to lose their chairmanships because of term limits or members who may just be ready to move on. They are in safe districts. Dems have to hope tonight leads to a few more GOP House members who live in competitive districts deciding to retire.
David ??Merry Christmas?? Koch
@Mike J: Virginia’s legislature has 100 delegates. If you extrapolate tonight’s result to the US Congress, were there are 435 seats, then losing 10 to 13 VA seats would be the equivalent of losing a whooping 44 to 56 Congressional seats.
Mike J

I was just thinking, which is always a dangerous thing when I do it, that one of the factors in last year’s election (though not the only and maybe not even a determinant one) was complacency on the part of some Dems. Obviously the Dem voters today, wherever they are, not just in VA, were not complacent. At the same time, I don’t think reduced GOP voter numbers was due to complacency. I think it was due to their being dispirited, disappointed and discouraged.
Its important we keep them feeling that way. And I think the Dems have to look at 2018 as kicking the opposition when its down on the ground. Don’t give them a chance to get up. We’ve let up in the past and look what we have to show for it.

Just got home from observing the closing in my precinct in Fairfax County. It’s become a reliably blue precinct in the 10 years I’ve been doing this. We had 1817 voters, Northam got 1107 votes to Gillespie’s 687 and Hyra’s 21. I was outside handing out sample ballots on and off during the day and there seemed to be more enthusiastic D voters all day long. More younger voters than usual in this cycle.

@PsiFighter37: At the moment taking back the lower house is looking likely. Yesterday I’d have said it was borderline impossible. There’s a much bigger swing there than in the headline races.

@Fair Economist: Fuck yeah!

I also don’t like Steve Kornacki. I’m making a list. There’s a quality crisis in punditry. They’re just not very good.
I feel like DougJ would be better than any of these people.

This interview is making me feel sorry for her. She’s aware what she’s saying is nonsense. It’s painful to watch.
The question for me is who not just take a break? Take 6 months off and come back. She’s probably got a ton of money.
It’s like they don’t know that they could voluntarily decide not to do these things. Like they’;re compelled to do these things. She could have said “you know what? I’ll wait and then come back”. That’s possible.
Jeffro
@Shana: Trumpov and his Republican enablers are the ultimate example – dare I say Peak Wingnut? – of what the GOP would do if/when it has ultimate control. People don’t like it very much…at least not a majority of Americans.

Is there anyone here to whom GG is not yet totally dead?

@Kay: I wasn’t fond of DWS, but she put on an excellent convention, and it’s clear that we shouldn’t have forced her out six months early to appease the Bros.

Looks like Charlotte, NC is about to have its first African American woman mayor. Too early to call yet, but big lead. Supposedly, that race had tightened up a lot in the last couple weeks and the Republican was given a good shot to win.
Ken
@Jeffro:
With the Republican candidate openly embracing the “kick down” philosophy, the only differentiator the Libertarians have is “all roads should be privately-owned toll roads,” and you’re not going to win many votes on that.

Seemed to me that he was sticking pretty close to the Trump playbook, but whatever. As usual, Trump blames everybody but himself.

@danielx: Trump is right in this case. He has an excellent ear for slights. Gillespie wanted to have it both ways and effectively said earlier that he appreciated Trump’s support but it didn’t mean he would support Trump in return.

Trans woman beating bigot who authored the screw with Trans people bill. So good!
That’s pretty sweet irony… those bigots played their bet and lost big. Americans (not all of us, but a good majority by now) are sick and tired of bigots telling us who to hate and how. Screw those folks!!
Hope the Rs in congress take warning! Doubt it, will have to beat them individually. I’m willing to do that if we need to!

@Ken: I am sure I am fucking up the details (fellow Ohio residents, please come to my rescue if I do), but Issue 1 basically prevents defense attorney’s from dragging crime victim’s past up in court if the past has no relevance to the case. Issue 2 would require the state to pay no more for prescription drugs than the Department of Veteran’s Affairs pays.
I think that is the gist of it.

@Kathleen: I pulled that info from the WLWT website. Local NBC affiliate in Columbus had it on their site, too. They might cover the results on the late night news.

Northam should have come out against the Pipelines. It is a big issue here in my area. Every vote that went for Hyra was because he was the only candidate that was opposed to the pipeline. I voted Northam because the alternative was so much worse, but didn’t like doing it. Tom Perrielo, had he won the primary, would have won statewide even bigger than Northam. No use crying over spilled beans. I am ecstatic about the outcome.
