Somehow, this scares me more than ~any poll I've seen this year. If Trump can get his base to hate the NFL, what can't he get them to do? https://t.co/1K8zKnf1ky
— Yascha Mounk (@Yascha_Mounk) October 13, 2017
Get off their asses & do something other than express a stupid, uninformed opinion?
And most likely, he can't get them to stop watching NFL https://t.co/6Qc6vyo1N5

Yeah, I suspect there’s a lot more Trumplodytes bitching about the NFL than actually boycotting. Situation’s getting completely meta…

I wish our voters were as serious about opposing Republicans.

@Baud: Neoliberal.

I brought up the radicalization of GOP voters in an earlier thread and it’s what I find most frightening:
These days, on the Republican side, it seems like you either leave the party or become a rancid racist
MomSense
@?BillinGlendaleCA:
I keep missing you. How is your cocker??? Hope she is doing better.

Republicans didn’t shift specifically to support Trump. That also marks the point when Americans became aware that it wasn’t just Kaepernick, but the NFL in general that opposed brutalizing blacks. THAT is what they’re reacting to, and I suspect us as well. Reactions here to shows of players kneeling together were dramatic.
EDIT – Note that no one actually cared who Trump supported in Alabama. He is a mouthpiece for his voters’ racism. That is his value to them.
@tobie:
Not ‘become.’ Just ‘stop hiding.’

@MomSense: She’s doing better; she still has problems with her legs sometimes.

“I really want to go back in time and tell an American WWII vet that, in 2017, Germany will be opposing American nazis”.
With a stop along the way in 1952, to tell Dwight Eisenhower a republican President of the United States is owned by Moscow, and a republican congress has got his back..
bystander
AMJoy was interviewing Lawrence Wilkerson this morning. He led with warning about Trump surrounded by Iran hawks and his bellicose remarks about Iran. By the time he got to (and I paraphrase),”To all the men and women who have been serving in wars in the ME for the past 17 years, get ready for 17 more years.” Joy said, “Oh my goodness!” Even she seemed depressed before the show was over.
Kryptik
Keep in mind, this isn’t even the first thing where GOP and Trump voters have completely flew toward the other side of an issue while Dems have stood pat. They did it on the economy, they did it on Russia/Putin, they’ve done it on health care, etc. It’s not a Trump thing, it’s a GOP tribal thing that can’t, even under the most generous of contexts, be dismissed as a ‘both sides same thing’ thing, because the partisan jumps on the GOP side of the spectrum are leagues sharper than any Dem swing you can find on any comparable issue.

OT: the new season of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is here and the first episode already has a pretty funny song! The 80’s-style girl anthem Let’s Generalize About Men. Just thought I’d share it :)
Enhanced Voting Techniques
Yes, so they “disapprove” the NFL, how many of them have stopped watching football games? This like them screaming at store employees they shop at about been told “Happy Holidays” or how they disprove of a Hollywood and yet watch every damn movie that comes out.
Also, is this Trump or has Fox and the rest of the wingnut media been frothing about Football too?
Brachiator
So, are NFL ratings down? Are there more empty seats? Has anyone given up their rights to season tickets? Or are these conservative snowflakes full of faux outrage?
West of the Rockies (been a while)
So, the hit on Rogers… clean or dirty? I haven’t seen it.

@Kryptik: That has economic effects since it caused consumer confidence to jump when Trump was elected.

@Brachiator:
You even had to ask?
I don’t think it’s faux outrage but it is tribal identity. Faux outrage is the just the means of that.
Baud
@Brachiator: I heard they have been going down steadily for several years. I have seen evidence of a Trump effect.

Apparently, the defenses of the Saints and Lions have decided to take a knee for the whole game.

And then there’s the next volley in the War on Women Trump administration unveils the ‘Fetal 14th Amendment’
F*ck them all! And how much do you bet that suddenly diaphragms, sponges and cervical caps (all of which women have SOME control over) will suddenly be found to be “abortificants”. Like I said F*ck them all! Or rather Unf*ck them all (TM Lenny Bruce).

Has anyone been volunteering for the state elections in Virginia? Normally I would do so, although it’s a hike, but I’ve had some health issues the past few months which have made it tough to go in person. I should see if one can phone bank from home.

@A Ghost to Most:
Yeah, looked dirty to me. The tackler clearly twists into Rogers to land on him and hurt him. I wonder if anyone made to block that defender on the knee later in the game.
Luthe
Not that it will make one iota of difference to the mouth-breathers, but I read Kaepernick decided to switch to kneeling in protest instead of sitting because a veteran asked him to. I guess the veteran felt sitting wasn’t respectful, but kneeling is how the flag is presented to family members at military funerals, so kneeling during the anthem both respected the flag and served as a protest.
In short, kneeling is patriotic *and* a protest.
trollhattan
@Brachiator:
We’ll know if they start having local broadcast blackouts due to unsold seats. I’m guessing Cleveland and Buffalo and SF, for example, not that their W-L records will have anything to do with it.
German lurker, delurking briefly
To add to the cognitive dissonance: this show of solidarity was done in the Berlin Olympic Stadium. Which was built for the Olympic Games of 1936. And whose design and construction Hitler personally (and his pet architect Speer) had a good deal of control and influence, to change it into more of a grandiose propaganda piece.
Brachiator
@Percysowner:
WTF???
Honus
@Luthe: correct. Keapernick consulted with a green beret afghistan and Iraq veteran who was also an NFL long snapper about his protest before he did it and the veteran advised him to kneel instead of sit on the bench, which would be disrespectful. Kaerpernick has been much more thoughtful and respectful of veterans than our president throughout this process.

Fascist-friendly types – alt-right, keyboard nazis, nativists, etc. – have been appropriating symbols, images, and memes from otherwise innocuous places for some years now. This seems to be a favored activity among the younger crowd, a combination of “doing irony” and/or maybe a more intentional effort to present themselves as all sweet and innocent-like, just like you and me.
The young fascist-intrigued crowd often seem to favor anime characters and other cartoon figures. I see a lot of these anime/cartoon avatars associated with Twitter accounts owned by such folks, or at least those who play that role online. (Hello Kitty is NOT anime, I’d best state out front – there are people very serious about this sort of thing who would not stand for implications to the contrary).
Anime and cartoon fans who are non-wingers or non-political often aren’t happy about this trend, and sometimes respond: Why One Portland Comic Con Has Banned All Nazi Costumes

I quit watching the NFL the day they re-signed Michael Vick and never have gone back. Don’t know how you all can square supporting people and a corporation like that with your purported love of animals.
Just turn it off. So easy. Don’t support animal torturers.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
that was an amazing and terrifying interview. Makes me wonder if St Colin is going to speak up.
Also, Lindsey Graham played golf with trump again and was fluffing the Rough Beast, again, about what a great golfer he is “He beat me like a drum!”. I had thought he was just sucking up to trump in hope of driving him to war, then Stephanie Reuhle on MSNBC asked/stated that he’s angling to take over for Tillerson, and then take us all into a splendid little war or two. It was so obvious once she said it I was embarrassed not to have thought of it right away.
