For those who live in Arizona — encourage good behavior
McCAIN on Graham-Cassidy: "I am not supportive of the bill yet."
He emphasizes he wants regular order, says CBO non-score affects his view.

And if need be, drink after you thank the very nice intern for working for such a Mavericky Maverick.

I wonder if McCain takes Schmidt’s calls, or sends him a Xmas card from the office?
Hunter Gathers
I’m sure that he’ll support the bill in the most Mavericky way possible after he cooks Maggie Halberman BBQ and a tug job from Butters.

@Jim, Foolish Literalist: Schmidt gave us Palin. Motherfuck that fat piece of shit with a rusty chainsaw using sand as lube. Then do the same to Nicole Wallace.

Did you know that Senator McCain used to fly Navy jets?
And that he crashed more fighter-bombers than any other pilot?
Does that make him qualified to tamper with health care for millions of Americans and interfere with 18% of the national economy?
Maybe it doesn’t.
Hal
What on earth does he have to lose by voting no and making that know now? I’m not trying to be an ass, but what’s the likelihood of McCain even being around in a couple of years?
Barbara
@Hal: He likes attention.
mai naem mobile
I think McCain’s kid still serving in the Navy keeps McCain more up to date with current mores and issues than a lot of other GOP Senators who deal with rich and richer people. His illness probably forces him to deal with regular people. Also his son is married to an AA woman also serving in the Armed Forces so I think that also opens him to other points of view. That does not mean that he’s not an opportunistic bastard.

This is good news from John McCain.

I don’t know how to take any of this– I can equally imagine them looking for a way to climb down or passing the damn thing by lunch tomorrow

@Jim, Foolish Literalist:
But what about “states’ rights” and freedom and small government? Let the states decide!
Bingo. It’s this. They have to pass some kind of turd that the VSPs will have to polish, all the while fucking with almost 1/5 of the economy and perhaps condemning millions to an early grave over a few decades. But white culture, babies, Gawd, guns, black and brown thugs, and maybe someday I’ll be rich.

Sorry! I thought you knew that was the new sarcasm font… ported from LGM I think.
OT: Can’t wait for the saga to resume… I’m anxious to see plot start to happen now that we’ve been introduced to the ground scene.
On topic, I can see how that crummy font reminds you of work. We changed away from minis and mainframes to Windows and Oracle DB, and the font could be anything you wanted it to be. Not that we allowed users to pick, we picked a clear readable font and used it for everything.
Those were the days! Running the systems instead of using them!!
MisterForkbeard
@Jim, Foolish Literalist: “Reverting to just-pass-anything” is kind of hilarious. That’s basically where they’ve been for the last 6 months. And for the prior 7 years, when they’d pass anything that said “Repeal Obamacare”, trusting that Obama would veto it.

@J R in WV:
Yeah, you people keep trying to get that off the ground, but feh I say, feh!

Why is it considered normal now that Republicans will destroy the lives of millions of Americans, so they can cut taxes for the super rich?
When Bush, Jr ran in 2000 he trotted out “compassionate conservatism”, because the media and general public decided that a President had to have more to his domestic agenda than a massive tax cut for the rich.
Standards and expectations have really declined.
Now having a domestic agenda that consists of nothing more than a massive upwards redistribution of wealth is met with a shrug.

The AARP is agsinst this–do these gop idiots think they can ever win even a rigged election without old white people votes?

Ground scene, as in the house, neighbors, friends, neighborhood, places where things can happen. Maybe a term of art from theater? I dunno, but I doubt I invented it…
I like Monaco OK as a font, I really like sans serif on-line. A friend who was a successful industrial designer insists that serif fonts are more readable even on line. He’s so noted as a designer it’s hard to disagree with him, so I quit talking about it. But I like sans serif, what can I say?

Koch and Mercer cash buys a lot of votes, and you better believe they want their tax cuts. And will not support Republicans, who do not support them.
Maybe not a primary challenger, but just cutting off the spigot of limitless billions.

McCain is a lying fuck. If he wants regular order, all he has to do is vote no on motion to proceed. Just more mavericky kabuki, fuck him over and over.

@Aimai:
How much sway does AARP have in getting members to vote for preferred candidates?
MomSense
@debbie:
Try faxing. In the bizarre hierarchy of constituent contact, it ranks higher. Text “resist” to 504-09 and in about two minutes you can send a fax to all your Congress critters and governor.
debbie

Portman’s site says there’s no fax, which is why I use the email they provide. The office has responded each time; they just lie when they say they care about all constituent concerns.

Ok. So Arizona Governor Ducey supports this bill. Which makes me suspicious McCain supports this bill and that he will use the last vestiges of his influence to pass this shit brick. All in support of Graham.
debbie
There better be some blow-back on this.
Major Major Major Major
@J R in WV: Oh, OK. I know there’s a broader term for that in fiction but I’m having a total brainfart right now.
I need fixed-width fonts for obvious reasons when coding, I don’t find serifs as readable for that purpose, and your friend is totally full of shit, in my personal opinion as somebody who reads all day. I like sans serif fonts on my devices and serif fonts in my books, probably because I find the smaller font sizes I encounter on devices to be more legible in sans serif fonts.
Villago Delenda Est

Why should they object? It’s not like they’re going to pay for it any time soon, ala Paris 1792 or anything.
debbie
@Major Major Major Major:
You may be the exception to the rule (or maybe you’ve done so much coding…). It’s been proven that serifs are easier to read due to the variations in letterforms. It’s why early readers are always in serifs.

It’s been proven that they make it harder to get letters confused, but AFAIK, and wiki seems to agree, there isn’t actually a lot of science (i.e. something that might ‘prove’ something) one way or the other as far as the more general concept of readability. Getting a letter here or there confused is much less important in natural languages since you have lots of wonderful context and all the other forms of disambiguation they have baked in.

Not an open thread, but so what: There is a Hillary book-related event in the building where I work tonight (sold out before I even knew about it), and some Bernie crazy with a bullhorn was standing on the corner haranguing people about how she stole the nomination. Incredible.

Question: The Supreme Court has found it unconstitutional for a President to line item veto.. But Trump seems to be subverting various government programs by not spending money (as in ads for ACA enrollment) and hiring freezes and various other things thus functionally vetoing spending on money allocated for various programs. I guess its legal because he’s doing it, but can it be challenged?

Somebody has actually designed a font specifically for dyslectic readability. I have a feeling someone mentioned it here on BJ a few weeks or months ago, but I remembered reading about it much earlier. Oddly, to my non-dyslectic brain, I didn’t see a great deal of difference between it and a “normal” font, but if such an innovation helps clarify the shape and function of letters for those who benefit from it, then I’m all in favour.

@SiubhanDuinne: Check out the recent Pod Save America episode with HRC. Here’s what I wrote today on FB:
“This PSA interview with Hillary was actually pretty great. One interesting point she makes about the primary is about the way she was not only constricted by sexist double-standards, but she was also constrained by the fact that she was trying to protect what Obama and Dems had built with the ACA, DACA etc. She was running FOR the Democratic Party not AGAINST IT, which put a much tighter constraint on what she could propose than Sanders because she would have never been able to get away with suggesting that Obamacare was a tremendous failure therefore we must scrap it altogether and try to pass Single Payer. As we see on a daily basis, it’s far more difficult to protect a Democratic legacy than it is to take pot-shots at it, from outside the party.
Check it out. It’s a really good interview.”

It’s always worth considering that he’s actually voting against it because he doesn’t want the political fallout from depriving his constituents of insurance but wants to com up with a justification that will sell to wingnuts.
