That’s Pam Bondi, whose steadfast Trump support is about to be further rewarded.
Not feeling much sympathy towards these two putzes, either:
As Irma churned toward the Florida coast, two Republican lawmakers from the state voted against a $15 billion hurricane relief bill, saying that although they want aid to storm victims, they have concerns about other provisions of the measure.
The relief package, which sailed through the Senate and the House and was signed by President Trump on Friday, boosts funding for the Federal Emergency Management Agency. It will also raise the debt ceiling for three months and includes a short-term budget that would keep the government running until December — part of a deal struck between Trump and Democratic leaders Sen. Charles E. Schumer (N.Y.) and Rep. Nancy Pelosi (Calif.).
That latter was a problem for GOP Reps. Matt Gaetz and Ted Yoho, who stuck to their principles of fiscal conservatism despite calls from fellow Florida lawmakers to support the bill. The two, who are among the 90 House Republicans who voted against the bill, do not represent parts of the state that are likely to feel Irma’s immediate impact as the massive storm makes landfall on mainland United States this weekend…
As ever, We got ours, fvck you guys is the only “principle” Repubs actually practice — but that they do with great enthusiasm!

It astonishes me that avoiding a government shutdown and a financial crisis while in the midst of emergency funding for aid to the victims of two hurricanes is somehow a “big deal” for President Trump and even offensive to many in his party. For a sane country there would not even be a question.

Eye of the storm going right through Naples at just after 5:00 p.m. High tide was between 3:00 and 4:00 p.m., so the expected storm surge is at least going to be after high tide in places like Marco Island and Naples. NWS has just downgraded Irma to a Cat 2, but still has sustained winds well over 100 mph.

@rikyrah: I was in Venice (Italy) in the fall (October I think) a couple of years ago. Maybe everybody else knew this, but I didn’t know that in fall in Venice, there are torrential rains and the high tides flood the streets every day. There was one outdoor restaurant open in St. Mark’s Square on the one remaining patch of dry plaza, but the rest of the Square was under water. This is apparently routine, though worse in some years than others.
Anyway, while there I read about a massive engineering effort the Venetians are doing to actually stop the flooding with giant floodgates that will block most high tides. They may have actually finished that by now.
Maybe only a matter of time before cities like New York and Miami consider it a good tradeoff to do the same rather than lose billions of dollars in real estate.
Mustang Bobby
I’m taking a moment to report that we — me and my friends Bob, Ken, Benjamin the Beagle and Madam the Cat — made it through Hurricane Irma with minimum of both structural and personal damage. The power went out at 6:26 a.m. EDT and the worst of the weather came through between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. We’ve opened up the house, cranked up the generator and have connected the icebox, a toaster oven, a light, and the VOIP box which gives us both internet and phone service.
We have not had a lot out outside communication; the TV stations have been simulcasting on local radio, but it hasn’t been very helpful when they’re describing things we can’t see. We do know that the storm hit Cudjoe Key at 9:10 a.m. and basically submerged the lower Keys before moving on to Naples and the west coast. I hope they can make it through without tremendous loss of life and property.
I don’t know when I’ll be moving back home; I don’t know the condition of my home. My neighbors and landlord know how to contact me, and I have a friend in the county police force who can get through if need be. Thanks in advance for your thoughts and wishes.

Miami consider it a good tradeoff to do the same
Miami can’t do that. The limestone karst under the city is no barrier to water.
You can build dikes atop the bedrock, but the water will come right through the bedrock and will rise inside your dike, not even much slowed down.
That limestone goes down hundreds of feet at least.
There is no practical way to dike/gate Miami from the sea.

I’m not saying go back to the way things were, or the way DeVos wants to make it, but the current system is a fucking horror.
(((CassandraLeo)))
@Schlemazel: I’m slightly more than 10 miles north of downtown Venice & we’re probably not going to get the worst of the storm here. Thus far, we still have power. On the other hand, we’re also almost twenty feet above sea level here. The people on the Intracoastal Waterway won’t have such luck. Downtown Venice will not be in good shape after this storm passes. Still, I expect it’ll be a Category 1 or weak Category 2 when it passes by – the main damage in this part of the state will probably be from the storm surge.
I’m kind of shocked how slowly this storm is moving. It was bad that Harvey moved so slowly over Houston, but here it might be a good thing; the more time it spends over land here, the more it weakens. It doesn’t seem to be as rain-intensive as Harvey.
That said, take what I say with a grain of salt. Actual forecasters haven’t done too well with this one, and I haven’t much better knowledge than “run from water, hide from wind”, plus an elementary understanding of physics.

From what I’m seeing on MSNBC, it looks like the surge is not going to go to the maximum 12′ or so predicted. More like 6-8, which still isn’t good, but I guess you take what you can get. It looks like the mid-keys were hit the worst. Key West looks to have received only minimal damage. I’m looking at pictures from BVI, just saw one of Leverick’s Beach, which is on the North side of Virgin Gorda, same area as Necker Island. Many multimillion dollar homes on the hillside have been completely wiped out or heavily damaged. Really devastating.

(((CassandraLeo)))
@Brachiator: The eye just passed Fort Myers; it won’t hit Tampa for hours yet. I just spoke to a friend in Fort Myers. They lost power and their street flooded, but their house is fine. Because the eye just passed them, they’ve probably already gotten the worst of their damage.
