@SFAW: @Omnes Omnibus: I’m not sure either. As far as I can tell from the links, it is a Hillary Clinton and/or centrist Democrat attempt at twitter style forum that can filter out ‘fake news’ and toxic spews of hatred and misinformation and propaganda, and general-purpose trolling.

Verrit is some Peter Daou nonsense. And because Clinton said something positive about his new venture, everyone has been “the Clinton’s are behind this and trying to take over the Democratic Party.” Rolling your eyes and walking on by is the correct response to this.
From that Gizmodo link, this sounds like Daou’s answer to “fake news,” but no one really asked him for one. And like conservatives believe Snopes is a vast liberal conspiracy, this thing endorsed by Clinton will be assumed to be a liberal conspiracy too.

attempt to find a reasonable conservative to FP here worked?
Obsidian Wings has carefully cultivated several commenters with conservative viewpoints — one of them, Sebastian, was a front pager for a while. I think I can safely say that he’s sickened by what’s become of the Republican Party he used to defend, and now he seldom makes an appearance. Another, McKinnonTX, is a lawyer in Texas who’s a pretty reasonable conservative — he and most of the rest of the ObiWi commentariat agree to disagree, and we learn a great deal from the discussions to which he contributes. Another is Marty, who emotes — if you don’t have a wingnut uncle to observe first-hand, you can learn a fair amount about how the conservative psyche is motivated from reading his comments. I usually find it best not to attempt to engage, because we disagree too greatly about what I take to be basic facts.

@Omnes Omnibus: Okay. You’re on Twitter, someone posts something mind-numbingly false, you need a quick reply, or you want to know that they’re talking out their butt. Google can actually be bad for this, since it has no curation and we know that Google-bombing works (see: Santorum and Miserable Failure). What you want is a source of verified sources, that you can trust, with dates, citations and attributions. Better still if that source is a static, consistent document (unlike Wikipedia) that can be indexed with something like a Library of Congress number — you put the number in, it will always spit out the exact same piece of information. That’s what Verrit does.
Each source is verified that a specific person said that specific thing on that specific date, in that specific publication. They’re assigning each piece of information a unique identifier (the 7 digit code, though I think they’re gonna need a bigger index) that can be consistently used for that specific verified card of information.
In a lot of ways, it’s sort of a digital version of what competitive LD and Policy debaters have been using for most of the last 40 years (I would have killed for it in college LD) before the Gish Gallop took over Policy. (Which is inside baseball for debate nerds, but debaters used to keep massive indexes of reference cards.)

@Omnes Omnibus: I think some of it is very useful. The links for backup references and backgrouind when you click through are very useful.
Some problems are very fixable. Browse categories are overly broad for researching specific topics. And the search function is sucky, but then I think most of them are.
But I agree that the big problem is you have to wade through a high quotient of pundit bloviating and opnionating posted as if were some kind of facty thing that is worth a lot. Not to me, but maybe is worth it for others.
Felonius Monk
@Omnes Omnibus:
I’m reserving judgement for the time being. I just learned about this, so I will watch for awhile.
I do see your point, but I didn’t pick up a resentment vibe. More of trying to set the record straight. But that just might be my bias. I like the basic concept of verifiable facts, quotes, etc. We will see where it goes.
jl
@Felonius Monk: First thing I learned about Daou and learned over and over and over again as I read the online bios (and all the top ones seem to be written by him or somebody in his little personal clique), is that he was an aide or adviosr to Hillary Clinton (yes, that’s right THAT Hillary Clinton!!) and a self proclaimed bigshot in the Democratic Party (Yes sir! That Democratic Party!!)..
So, like I said above, maybe Daou is not the best person to be running it. Does he have a reputation as being a horndog on self-promotion? From what I read he is very big with HILLARY CLNTON and the DEMOCRATIC PARTY!!
Though to be fair, seems like, if you read down far enough, he survived some harrowing stuff in Lebanese civil war as a youth.
CZanne
@Omnes Omnibus: Pretty much, that’s the idea. I don’t know how complete the Verrit database is yet, but I’ve been sort of spot-checking it with (mostly) random numbers because indeed, I am that kind of geek, and I haven’t found misverified cards yet. The data on the card will link back to the stated source, on the stated day, and the data will be either a historical fact, or trustable data (mostly peer reviewed, so far; some polling data). I’m keeping my numbers on the low side of the 1 million line (a 7 digit identifier gives 1 shy of 10 million entries), but that’s just because I doubt they’re assigning numbers randomly. (They could be, but I haven’t seen anything above 1000000 yet.)
On opinion is where it’s going to get ermmm… quirky. Let’s use the Stein quote on vaccines (which is not in the database, and shouldn’t be, because it’s disingenuous crap). That was her opinion, and she actually said the quote. Is her opinion valid? I’d say no, she’s a loon, and that quote only proves having an MD doesn’t mean one is qualified to practice medicine or politics. But the quote still exists, could in theory be verified, and my opinion of her opinion doesn’t change the fact that she said a stupid thing that can be disingenuously interpreted. And that can apply to others and other data. But having a trustable source of sources is a net good, overall.
I’m not a huge fan of “proof-texting” (that’s what it’s called when a Bible person throws out quote after quote, without understanding the context or often the content of their single, memorized quote) but it’s how the game is played right now.
DLKaps

OK. This stupid fucking thing.
Verrrit is a pun on “Reddit”. The big feature of Reddit was letting people vote on posts, thus providing some kind of crowdsourced filtering. This actually has worked pretty well; they tend towards funny/lightweight shit but their news is very heavily left-leaning, and, since facts have a well-known liberal bias, means it tends to stay towards the factual (and the funny, and ridiculously silly, etc).
Now. Clinton has had a hard-on for the media and vowed that her post-presidential-run activities will focus on trying to fix the media and fake-news problem. This ain’t that fix, and, she outsourced it to a clown. But can’t disagree with her that the media and social media are big fucking problems.
Here’s my take on this whole thing. I look around, and every new media invention has caused a flurry of political insanity, until people get used to it. The printing press gave Europe hundreds of years of brutal and senseless religious slaughter (Protestants vs Catholics). The radio and the loudspeaker gave us fascism and totalitarianism and WWII. TV gave us neoliberalism and corporate domination of the planet, and we’re not over that one yet. Cable news gave us Desert Storm and Triangulation. Radio deregulation (hate radio) gave us Newt Gingrich-ism. And social media gave us President Troll.
Obama nailed this in a chlling and accurate way towards the end of his Presidency: you can’t have a democracy when there are “alternate facts”, when there’s no common agreement on what the facts are. Social media (FB, Twitter, in particular) combined with the earlier innovations like Cable news and hate radio, make this an untenable situation.
Democracy by definition is people making decisions together, collaboratively. That can’t happen if those people are living in completely different realities.
I don’t know what the answer is to this problem, but I’d expect something to appear on the horizon eventually.
CZanne
@West of the Rockies (been a while): by cohort, you’re a transitional, called Jones. Younger than the core Boomers, or a late younger/youngest sib of Boomers, likely the last of a large family or the firstborn of young, War baby/very early Boomer parents, or a delayed child of older Silents. Too young for any of the unrest of the mid-late 60’s, but conceived/born before the first potential marker for X was available. (That first marker is access to contraceptive pills, so Premature X starts in late 63, gets going in 64-65ish.) As a 62, you would have been 13 when the Atari was released, so right in the target, and video games rapidly replaced pinball in your teens, but you were highly unlikely to have a home computer in your early teens. Your schools were more integrated than not, but your schools were funded, unlike most Xers, whose school budgets got gutted when they were in those schools.
I like using the transitional cohorts with the generational frame; it’s more complete, and breaks the cohorts to 10-12 year chunks instead of 20-25.
Montanareddog
@West of the Rockies (been a while): I am the same age. I like to think of myself as being on the cusp; so, we’re “cuspers”
Sister Golden Bear
@CZanne: Even if was a marketing gimmick, I did think the Generation Jones stuff resonated pretty well with a lot of my experiences (I’m 53, first-born of Silents).
IIRC, one key aspect is that we were young enough to have been raised on the promises of the Great Society — and then had them taken away when we came of age. E.g. in junior high there were funding for various arts-related stuff in stuff — all of which got axed when I hit high school in the aftermath of Prop. 13; we were lead to believe that everybody would be able to get a good job — and then the ’82 recession hit (the worst recession since the Great Depression).
A bit different than Gen Xers who came of age after their huge expectations had been taken away. Similar cynicism about being left to fend for ourselves, but with a bit rawer sense of being let down.
Applejinx
@Sister Golden Bear: Yeah, us Xers a bit younger (born in 1968 here: on BJ I’m a ‘kids these days’) didn’t really get baited with the promises like those a few years older. Our life experience was and remains unbroken cynicism, plus some black humor.
It’s impossible not to see Verrit in that light. It’s a self-own: the dirtbag left I hang with now (with whom I’m waaaayy older, they trend a lot younger than me) see it as entirely a Clintonian blame/justification game, and also an indication she intends to run again, which horrifies them.
They like to think my senator from Vermont will run again, which horrifies me. Either one is a recipe for losing again: it’s no longer relevant whether my Senator would’ve won by stealing populist votes from Trump (or, if you like, matching lie with lie and promising equally much to save people’s jobs and lives?). Evidence suggests he would have matched hype with hype, and we’ll never know if it would have worked (to win: much less, become practical policy).
I will not vote for Clinton again. I assume you will not vote for my Senator again (in fact I might end up volunteering a lot just to prevent out-of-staters from ratfucking him). It’s very simple, we need new people, that’s hardly controversial. I’ll be really really disappointed in the guy if he tries to become President which I doubt: I now think, thanks to Verrit and such, that Clinton does in fact intend to try to become President again, even at the cost of ruining a possible Dem wave election we desperately need.
Cheers, and I’ve been not using my Senator’s name because I know you guys are all funny that way. Funny like a murderous catamite funny ;P whatever, you is what you is.

Late back to this thread, but, hey, somebody was wrong on the Internet.
As you surmised, “Wilmer” is a Balloon Juice nickname for Bernie Sanders. Late last year, some Sandernista trolls apparently set alerts to remind them to come here if their sainted leader was mentioned, so the Wilmer protocol was offered as a stealth measure. It has outlived its usefulness, since any interested trolls have long since added “Wilmer” to their alert list. But it continues as a sort of “cool kids of Balloon Juice” inside reference.
And, no, it has nothing to do with Wilmer in The Maltese Falcon. Here is the origin of Wilmer (credit to Jim, Foolish Literalist, December 16, 2016).
ETA: I think the Maltese Falcon angle actually originated with one of the trolls screeching about how it was homophobic to use “Wilmer” as the nickname.

@? ?? Goku (aka The Hope of the Universe) ? ?: You forgot NY Times and WaPo repeating Breitbart memes and “Oh Her Emails” while ignoring Trump’s half century of corruption and sleaze. The Bernie Bros, and it is almost always a Bro, seem so much fired up about going after Hillary and other Democrats then they do about the Republicans and Trump.

@sherparick: I don’t know which suffers greater from Clinton Derangement Syndrome:
The Right, The Left or The New York Times?

It’s funny. I feel like a woke up and dad is in one of his bitchy moods and you don’t know what you did wrong. I have no idea why you are ripping so heavily but for whatever reason, you picked this clip-art to die on. Okay. I’m almost done here, been visiting for about 15 years (comment occasionally) but not sure I need to read that particular abuse any more. I had liked this mostly-white-not-by-my-choosing blog, and followed the pets from everyone, as I have pups, too.
If you bitch about this, what in the world are you going to bitch about when ICE comes into the colleges and schools to rip children out and deport them? I’m obviously not with you. I’m with them. Bitching about the Daous seems an incredible valueless venture.
