I have to share- the new name that’s come up in the Trump Russia scandal is Rick Dearborn, his Deputy Chief of Staff. My husband was on Debate team with Dearborn in high school. I asked him what he remembered of him and he said, “Did his homework. Carried a grudge. Adequate debater.”
Sometimes I really love that Oklahoman taciturness.

@Nicole: So this Dearborn fellow worked as a Heritage Foundation liason to Congress and as an aide to Jefferson Uncle Cracker Sessions and allegedly involved in setting up a meeting between Trump and Putin.
At what point does Russia become involved -and who reached out to who?
My hope is that many GOP’ers are compromised and not just limited to the president’s inner circle.

Since, just by the timing of things, I seem to have come upon an open thread just opened, let me place here one more comment about the eclipse–something so unremarkable that no one has remarked on it.
We watched a magnificent event that was totally silent.
Now, in one sense, that’s obvious. We were watching a shadow at work. But I’m surprised by how surprised I was. Here it comes – – here it comes – – here it comes – – NOW! All happening millions of miles away and in silence. I was totally taken in by the eclipse. I expected that. What I was surprised by was the quiet.
Now, WE weren’t silent for long. Insects started chirping, there were explanations for the little ones, and we had arranged drums for all. And one minute, 23 seconds is really not a very long time.
I will remember this for as long as I live (or as long as I remember things, whichever comes first). I spent the days leading up to eclipse obsessing about possible cloud cover. I look back on how silent it was.

I remember being told in these threads that I couldn’t buy Obama/Biden 2012 souvenirs, because paying for them would amount to a foreign contribution to the campaign How come Putin got to give millions to Trump? It’s just not fair!

We heard a flock of birds fly close by, seemingly just a few feet above our heads. They were there and then gone before I could even look up. I bet they were spooked.

ACT for America, the nation’s largest anti-Muslim organization, announced on Tuesday that it would cancel 67 of its “America First” rallies across 37 states and will instead lead an online “Day of ACTion.”
In a press release on Tuesday given exclusively to Breitbart, the group said it “is deeply saddened that in today’s divisive climate, citizens cannot peacefully express their opinion without risk of physical harm from terror groups domestic and international.” The group originally said it organized the rallies “out of an abundance of caution” because of “the recent violence in America and in Europe.”
“Given the security issues of organizing public events, the responsible decision is to deny this opportunity to Neo-Nazis, Antifa, the KKK, and ISIS inspired individuals and groups,” the statement continued. “ACT for America’s membership is patriotic citizens whose only goal is to celebrate America’s values and peacefully express their views regarding national security.”
@BC in Illinois: Reminds me of when I asked an exchange student from Africa what she thought about snow: “How quiet it is!”
I guess if the only precipitation you are familiar with is rain, then yes, snow’s silence would be a surprise.

I have just finished laughing — and crying — out loud for five solid minutes. Here’s the trigger, from a post at Le Livre des Visages: “This is important. I’ve discovered who the real founder/organizer/manager of Antifa is.
It’s Bill Ayers!
And of course that means Bernardine Dohrn is in on it too. I knew he wouldn’t be content to rest on his laurels after being Obama’s kingmaker. I *saw* him in the TV-news vids of the anti-Trump rallies during the election campaign — especially that big noisy rally that got into assaults and window-smashing, and had all the pre-printed “Bernie” signs. I recognized his characteristic tactics when I began studying “actions” that Antifa has been involved in. Above all, I recognized his remarkably Stalinoid contempt for his own troops. Do you remember how he acted at that last SDS convention? Yeah, it’s him all right!”
The person who wrote this is (unsurprisingly) fond of conspiracy theories and trutherisms, but this one…wow. Just ::headdesk::
“Ah, the strawberries, that’s where I had them. They laughed at me and made jokes but I proved beyond the shadow of a doubt and with- with- geometric logic that a duplicate key to the ward room icebox did exist.”

@BC in Illinois: We got back home late Tuesday from our week long eclipse trip, then work yesterday. Childhood/lifelong friends of my husband from all over the US came to a kid’s camp to enjoy seeing each other and the event; over 70 people of all ages. It was wonderful and reminiscent of the Jewish summer camp they all went to together, but in the wilds of WY.
We experienced totality at the top of Grand Targhee ski area and watched the shadow roll across the farmland below towards us; very cool. The first image in my mind the next day was the totality. Seeing that gave me such a sense of the distance we are from the moon and how much farther away the sun is. I’ll never forget it. The mom of the 9yo next door tells me he said it was better than anything at Disneyland.

@Amir Khalid: If you do find the secret, you can sell it to Trump — cash up front, of course.
I’ve seen situations where they make a person’s leg longer to get them even, they break the thigh bone and insert a device into each half that allows them to keep the two ends nearly touching. Then they can keep opening the gap as the two bones try to heal.
When the patient’s legs are both the proper length, they stop adjusting the gap and allow healing to take place.
They could do this with all the bones in your left hand, give you a couple of mm of stretch in every bone, nearly a cm of lengthening over all.
Would probably hurt a lot, gout wouldn’t help there. Might fail, lose a finger, cost a lot of money whether it worked or not…
Kidding, not suggesting it at all. If your legs were not the same length, you would have hip and back trouble as well as leg trouble, so worth some effort.
When wife had knee replacements, there was a lot of work done to straighten her feet so they point forward, rather than out to each side, as well as care to make both legs the same length. Like fine cabinetry work, as opposed to rough framing carpentry. Worked out well for her.

I had no idea they would do stuff like that. But I presume feet that point out is not good for the function of the knees, so it makes sense. So glad you had doctors that were good enough to pull that off!
Late to the party, but I’ve been reading your posts on the guitar, and marveling at how it reminds me of when I first started playing…
You can stretch the fingers of your left hand apart w your right hand; put your right hand between your index and middle finger on your left hand, and spread the fingers of your right hand to stretch your two fingers apart. Do the same thing between your middle & ring/ring & pinky fingers. It won’t make your fingers any longer, but it’ll feel like it…
