I’ve been following the trials and tribulations of the Daily Stormer. First, GoDaddy nixed their domain. Then they moved to Google, which dropped them like a hot potato a short time after they registered. Then their site went down because CloudFlare (a caching system) puked them out like a bad clam. Then they registered themselves in Russia (of course). The Russians saw a moment for some good PR and shitcanned them this afternoon.
“Russian law has established a very strict regime for combatting any kind of extremism in the Internet,” said Aleksandr Zharov, head of the Roskomnadzor, the Russian government agency responsible for media and Internet regulation.
Don’t worry, the Nazi in charge says they’ll be up on “the darkweb” soon. Let’s face it – your average Nazi has enough problems with the “lightweb”, so I’m gonna guess that these assholes are going to lose a few readers. Not that it will make a big difference, but it’s nice to see them have to work for it.

Maybe Assange can get some EcuadorIan company to host them. Haha, a Latin country hosting a racist website.

Unfortunately, the human cockroaches. centipedes and other vermin that live under rocks never seem to have any trouble finding each other.
There’s a fine guest post by Lisa Miller over at LGM which talks about how to identify and deal with fascists.

What’s funny is that people were complaining to Cloudflare, who refused to take any action. Then Daily Stormer claimed that Cloudflare’s lack of action proved they were on the side of white supremacists. That’s when they got nuked. Had they stayed quiet about Cloudflare, they’d still be protected.

If you are a client, and you intentionally become a PR disaster for your provider – whether that’s a lawyer, an ISP, or even a direct employer like Google – you should not be surprised when they dump you on the curb as soon as you move from being a benefit to a liability.

I particularly liked The Hill’s coverage on this this morning. When you click their link, you see The Daily Stormer’s own tagline….”America’s #1 Most-Trusted Republican News Source.” http://thehill.com/policy/technology/346932-russia-boots-white-supremacist-website-from-its-internet-report

They can run their own damn server, but they need a DNS registry and if nobody takes them, they’re not on the “dark web”. They’re at a numeric IP address, buried good and hard.
I’m sure Facebook and Twitter will step up and help out, though. They love fascists.

Putin knows how to keep up appearances. I saw Putin participate in a panel discussion the RT news staff did with their gracious and merciful boss. He should have sent Trump an autocrat manual right after the election.. but, then, Trump wouldn’t read it. Maybe Putin should have sent some short instructional videos.

Also, don’t the Russians, under whatever guise, still make a great deal of (deserved ) hay out of the Great War? They lost how many millions exactly? There’s an amazing graphic out there somewhere, but I can’t find: civilians, soldiers, millions upon millions. Unthinkable millions. Maybe they were bastards, and starved the Ukrainians, and had the Gulags and all the things esp. with Uncle Joe, but I do believe they generally legitimately dislike self-declared Nazis. (I know there was that hard-right motorcycle gang, but they didn’t employ Nazi iconography did they?)
Major Major Major Major
@The Moar You Know: Quiet you, that doesn’t sound nearly as ominous.
@Mike J: I’m frankly surprised there isn’t some sort of niche company for these people already, like Voat but for DNS/hosting instead of redditing. Not that you can operate a DNS shop of one, but you know what I mean.

Russian law must not be too committed to being against extremism if the government went out of its way to help get Dear Leader elected…

Compared to Trump, Putin is masterful at going through the motions. In front of the camera with his underlings and press, Putin knows how to do ‘taken aback and thoughtfully considering a point he hadn’t considered”, “apologizing for getting something wrong’, “you raise a great point, but let me be sure I understand’, “glad someone brought a new angle that needed to be looked into”, and “agreeing to disagree”, and “let us suspend judgment on a profound point that none of us can get our heads around right now.” And other stuff too, those are just what come to mind right now.
I guess too much trouble for Trump to take a look at how Putin does it and get a clue. But OTOH, better for us that the real Trump is on display, to further reduce his popular support.

Semi related to the vile racist in the WH:
Red Sox owner John Henry told the Boston Herald today that the team will petition the city of Boston to change the name of the street outside Fenway Park from Yawkey Way (named for the vile racist owner of the team from 1933 until his death in the 1970s). Of course some yahooos on sports talk are already agin’ it.
Henry has not suggested a new name.
Gator90
I know I’m being dramatic and over-personalizing this, but as a Jew I’m having trouble getting my head around the apparent fact that, given DJT’s continued support among Republicans, a substantial portion of U.S. citizenry is relatively untroubled by people who’d prefer my family and me to be dead.
I protested in a recent thread against equating conservatives to Nazi sympathizers, but maybe I was giving them too much credit.

This is typical of their outlook. It’s not enough that they can believe what they want; they need to have public acknowledgment. So they demand the right to say the N-word in public without repercussions. If they can’t rub minorities’ faces in it, they aren’t getting everything they want.

@gene108: We were in Saint Petersburg a few years ago on a cruise, and one day a tour bus took us to Peterhof Palace, which is about an hour from the city. Getting there we passed a few of what had to be the biggest cemeteries in the world, much bigger than anything I’d ever seen in NYC. A minimum of a million and a half people died during the siege of Leningrad and that’s where the ones they could find got buried, many in mass graves. The Russians remain very down on Nazis.

@JerryRich:
Apropos of the Yankees’ racist past, on Monday I went to a program at the Smithsonian on Casey Stengel and Leo Durocher. The gist was the Durocher, despite being a complete jerk otherwise, was very supportive of black players in the majors, while Stengel’s views were somewhat opaque, in large part because he tended to defer to ownership on nearly everything. (There’s a famous line of his that more or less goes “They finally got me one of them [Elston Howard] and he’s the only one who can’t run,” with a word I won’t repeat substituted for the second “one,” but as the writer who was there said, there was some evidence that he had been pushing the team to accept a black player before Howard.)
