Not to spoil the comment, but those look more like dump trucks than like trash trucks. Trash trucks are normally completely enclosed so the trash can be compacted and can’t fly out.

Here in the Mile High city this weekend, a well-known topless joint hosted a “White Trash Party.” (According to the establishment’s sign, anyway. I didn’t visit.) That got me to wondering how the evening went for those who complimented others on the authenticity of their costumes.

Reminiscent of the inflatable rats often placed outside New York City worksites accused of union-busting, the inflatable features Donald Trump’s likeness characterized with a long tail, buck teeth, a Russian flag lapel, and Confederate flag cufflinks. Erected shortly after 12:30 p.m. Monday, it immediately began drawing crowds of selfie-snapping tourists and office workers out for lunch.

Karin Bravin, who installed the piece with her husband John Lee, said a representative from the police department helped them place Trump Rat on the sidewalk. She also noted that the inflatable company they commissioned “had a good time with it.”

Terry McAuliffe talked about how VA was warned how heavily armed the Nazis were going to be – they even found cached arms around the city – so the whole goal of the cops was to prevent a gun battle. Put new light on why the cops were so restrained.

President Trump’s motorcade on Saturday reportedly took a longer route than usual on its way back to the president’s Mar-a-Lago resort in what reporters said appeared to be an attempt to avoid large crowds of Tax March protesters.
According to pool reports, Trump’s motorcade made a long loop to get back to Mar-a-Lago after leaving Trump International Golf Club in Florida around 1:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, reporters traveling separately in press vans that continued on the shorter route back to the luxury resort immediately encountered “hundreds of protesters” demanding the president release his tax returns.

🌎 🇺🇸 Goku (aka The Hope of the Universe) 🗳 🌷 says:

What is instructive is what the Muscovites have done with their statues, collecting them in a sculpture garden and giving them historical context.

    A grove of Lenin statues

The statues and monuments now reside together in a section of MUSEON Arts Park, a lovely green space next to Gorky Park. MUSEON is also known as the Fallen Monument Park, though “felled monuments” would be the more appropriate name. The park contains more than just felled Soviets. There are hundreds of other pieces sprinkled through the park. But walking through the grove of Lenin statues, sitting in the shade of a monumental Soviet coat of arms, or posing next to a large bust of Leonid Brezhnev or Mikhail Kalinin is the thrill for people like me.

Each statue or set of statues is accompanied by a panel that informs the viewer about the work, its composition and the history of its display. Notably, there is little about the leader being portrayed in the text. Each description ends with, “By the decree of the Moscow City Council of People Representatives of Oct. 24, 1991, the monument was dismantled and placed in the MUSEON Arts Park exposition. The work is historically and culturally significant, being the memorial construction of the soviet era, on the themes of politics and ideology.” The point, of course, is that the Moscow city council is careful to state that the display is not intended to glorify the past, but to document it.

    I’m okay with this.

McAuliffe said they knew the police and Guard were actually out armed. That the Nazis had bigger guns than they did. More military weapons.

I, too, was surprised the cops didn’t do more. And joined in the chorus of how come white supremacists don’t get military assault like protests when black children are gunned in the streets. But, apparently, after the ACLU succeeded in preventing moving the Nazis to a large, open park outside of town, and the rally was going to happen in a tiny space, in town, full of people, the Governor made a decision not to provoke a gun battle and the cops aimed to prevent any firing. And it worked.

The Nazis are scheduling rallies lots of places across the country. Their goal must be to cause first skirmish in the Civil War.

    jl says:

@🌎 🇺🇸 Goku (aka The Hope of the Universe) 🗳 🌷: Thanks, I think that is a useful post. I’ve read about other approaches in Europe where fascist, Nazi and communist monuments are paired with counter monuments and outdoor museums to put them in context. The former might be a good idea. For some reason, there are very few monuments to the contributions African-Americans, as slaves and free people, made to the US, and few commemorating the liberation from slavery. Why not? We could use some of those in every state of the union, I think. There are many ways to deal with these monuments besides removing them. Some approaches manage to retain some dignity for the monuments.

But, to be viewed in public as history, they first have to become history. These monuments cannot become history until fascists, Nazis, and white supremacists quit using them as pretexts and political statements as part of their continued attempts to roll back progress in civil rights. I think it has to be an unconditional demand that they do so if these monuments are to remain in public spaces. And that would be a good test for them. Would they be willing to live with a counter monument commemorating African-American slavery, or liberation? Would they be OK with an outdoor museum that explained that a monument was erected not to commemorate Civil War dead, but were actually erected decades later to CELEBRATE the imposition of Jim Crow?

We may be reaching a tipping point where, as we see, citizens may become so sick of them, that they take matters into their own hands and tear them down spontaneously. (Edit: which is a bad idea. They are heavy and someone will get hurt doing it that way.)

The white supremacists polluted their own history by using these monuments as political weapons in an unjust cause for the last 130 years. They need to disavow that effort, and do it right now, otherwise they will all be removed. Up to them. I think they polluted the history, and in a sense erased it to further their cause. They have to fess up and clean up if they want anything to remain at all.

Anyway, up to them. Bottom line: they quit the BS or out all of them go, one way or another.

Just got back from a weekend in northern Wisconsin and haven’t had a chance to go through all the threads so I may be duplicating some things. But here are some of my observations regarding the weekend.

    1. The “on many sides” part of Trump’s statement on Saturday was pure Trump. I highly doubt it was in the written remarks. He has a tendency to really concentrate on what he is reading and when he lifts his head and throws something out there, it is usually an ad-lib.
    2. The media was taking no prisoners this weekend. Even Fox was, for them, being critical of the President.
    3. By this morning Trump was screwed. Any statement he made would seem forced and insincere. So when the alt-right didn’t get all fussy about what he said, it was because they knew he didn’t mean it. And even having made it, there was a lot of push-back from a lot of sources. media and otherwise.
    4. There is the old adage “action speaks louder than words.” If Trump meant what he said today than why are Bannon, Miller and Gorka still there? And this is being picked up more and more.
    5. I was wondering how long it wuld take for this all to have an impact on his numbers. Turned out wasn’t long at all. Down to 34% approval today in Gallup with 61% disapproval and 5% idiots.

Yup. Trumpy and his band of misfit neo-nazis are going to need to learn this. As racist as many people in this nation are, they made the mistake of killing an affluent white woman in a disgusting terrorist attack. @TenguPhule:

Obama’s 39 percent showing among white voters matched the percentage that Bill Clinton received in 1992 — albeit it in a competitive three-way race — and exceeded the percentage of the white vote earned by Walter Mondale in 1984, Jimmy Carter in 1980 and George McGovern in 1972.

There’s a lot of ways to look at it and I voted for Clinton and supported her proudly but arguably the white candidate blew Obama’s lead with the white vote – “lead” in terms of Democrats, because Democrats don’t win the white vote.

It’s a very complicated issue but what seems clear is Obama was a quite successful Democratic candidate re: white voters. On just a per cent basis. Trumpster, on the other hand, is sucking wind for a Republican.
