Just a quick update and test. This post will appear and then disappear, and then reappear again. Kind of like the health care travesty in the Senate.
Last night, our hosting company updated a lot of the back-end server stuff and that was why the site was a bit twitchy. It should be fine now.
I’m testing this theory by posting a picture to see if it errors out.
And the errors didn’t happen!
This was on a Reservation, forget which one thanks to Adam, I’ve determined that it’s from my visit to the Taos Pueblo – thanks! I’ve visited a few out West over the years, but never stepped foot into a casino. Should you ever have the chance, visit a Reservation, tour and ask questions, and spend some money in non-casino settings, they can use it.

I see the pic.

I love visiting tribal museums, and have stopped at any I’ve run across out west. And I always shop in the museum gift shops.

The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux put on a very large pow-wow (Wakipi) every year on their land near the Mystic Lake Casino, we try to go every year. Not knowing what to expect we ate at the casino the first year, it sucked. After we discovered that there were native vendors on the pow-wow site. Not a lot of variety and you do need to understand the concept of “Indian time” but I felt a lot better thinking I was supporting folks who were working hard for their income instead of the mob who run the casinos and dribble some of the take to the local community. It occurs to me I should send photos for the early AM photo thread. It is one heck of a spectacle and I would encourage people to take it in without preconceived notions of what it should be

I don’t think we’re allowed to use that word here without some tricks to get it to post.
I see the picture fine too.

@Yarrow:

I think the FPs can post anything they want but for the rabble we have to use a trick. I forgot that & had to repost my above comment
chris
Nice pic. But I still don’t see the last post/next post arrows and haven’t for a while now. Linux Mint 17.3/Chrome updated daily.
chris
Nor do I have permission to edit. FYWP
The arrows are no big deal but thought you might like to know.

I hate this change. This sucks, all of it. Why can’t we go back to the way it was before? I loved this blog, a long time ago, but all that’s all far behind us now. This is worse than Benghazi and the Clinton pay-to-play together.

@chris: Really? I don’t have a Mint system to test, but I’ll spin up a Ubuntu desktop and see what’s what. I’m using Chrome in Win10 and there’s the grey previous post button to the left, ironically, of your comment.
Alain the site fixer
@chris: Are you running any kind of JavaScript blockers or anything like that in Chrome?
Alain the site fixer
Oh – Raven, if you see this comment, thanks for the link to the gallery. Some great pictures and amazing planes.
chris
@Alain the site fixer: Nope, Java is on.
ETA Ubuntu will do
Alain the site fixer
@chris: Just updated Chrome, and the control is there, to the left of this comment box. Weird
As in, it works. And I’m now editing a comment. And that works. I’ve never logged into the back end on this machine and browser, so I’m like any other commenter right now.
chris
Me too! I see it! But I have Cole’s post in another tab and there’s nothing.
ETA Still nothing when I use the arrow. Must be bad magic.
Alain the site fixer
Except for the Google Docs, etc. extensions, I’ve got nothing else installed. So, what are you running Extension-wise?
Major Major Major Major
@chris: anything in the javascript console, other than an endless stream of errors from the stupid autoplay video?
Alain the site fixer
@chris: ooh..let me go see for myself!
So…refresh that window, are they there now? There should be one for old and one for new. I wonder if my publishing a post then disappearing it then re-appearing it made that twitchy today.
But…didn’t you report this a day or so ago? I’ve only done that once, today, so that’s not an explanation for previous issues.
Mike J
Linux Mint 17 Qiana, Chrome and Firefox, arrows work fine.
Ten Bears
Thank you for visiting. I’m pretty ambivalent about the casinos: on the one hand I figure if somebody wants to throw their money away I ought to be able to pick it up, though on the other hand they have not delivered the prosperity promised (not at all an unforseen coincidence).
Everything works on my chrome handheld, and M$10 tablet.
chris
@Alain the site fixer: Doh! AdBlock kills the arrows. Turned it on the other day when there was a very loud autoplay ad. Off now, got arrows.
Yarrow
Edited. Wrong thread.
Alain the site fixer
@Ten Bears: Can you use the form to drop me an email? I’d love to ask you some stuff off-line.
And, thanks for the info re: the handheld. And to the others, thanks for piping in.
@chris: Great, now just to figure out why and stop it from the false positive. Since you’re their customer, let them know we use the Enfold theme for WordPress. It’s a major seller, and this is default functionality, so they should work with it.
Alain the site fixer
@Ten Bears: Put that way, yes, “if you’re going to gamble, do it on a Reservation” is good advice. I just feel that the folks making and selling things and offering tours are more directly impacted by my spending. I’m not the casino or resort type, really, and since you vote with your wallet…
chris
Curious that it would be just that one thing. Doesn’t seem to affect any other sites. Oh well, I’ll send an email. Thank you.
Amir Khalid
@Ten Bears:
Is there an outside partner in the casino development who’s taking a large-ish cut? Thirty-odd years ago, when Native American casinos were just coming up, TIME magazine outed a Malaysian property billionaire, Lim Goh Tong, as having a stake in a number of them. (Lim got one heck of a lucky break when he obtained the licence to operate the one and only casino in Malaysia, and it’s highly unlikely the government here will ever issue another.)

I see the picture. Chrome x64 (desktop).
There are a couple of Pueblos I love to visit around ALB.
Mike J
@chris: Try uBlock Origin. I had a lot of trouble with adblock eating cycles and not being accurate on what it blocked. uBlock Origin is much faster and a better blocker.

Alain, I have a friend who keeps pushing me towards the WordPress platform for a site I’ll need sometime soon. I can do some very basic coding, but I absolutely cannot handle advanced stuff. The amount of frustration expressed towards WP here makes me skittish about the idea. What do you think — WP or something else for this dilettante?
chris
@Mike J: Thank you, I will.

@Amir Khalid:
Early on there were articles about the management companies that were brought in to run the operations for the native americans all were run by people with sketchy pasts with a lot of ties to waste disposal companies – if you know what I mean
Major Major Major Major
@different-church-lady: Depends on the site. Honestly, you should be fine. Balloon-Juice is more complicated than it really needs to be IMO, which causes some of the bugs, and the rest (like the weird spam filtering and draconian comment deletion) are necessities due to scale and this being a part-time project and legacy code etc etc.
What is it?
different-church-lady
@Major Major Major Major: At first it will support a documentary film I am self-producing. The longer term goal is a on-line salon that will support ideas and advocacy for improvement to public spaces. I suppose very simple “e-commerce” bits might come into play, in terms of soliciting donations to the film budget.

Hello? WTF? This isn’t Redstate. How’d I get here? Hippies! Hippies!
Major Major Major Major
@different-church-lady: You might end up switching platforms down the line but for the situation you’re describing WP is sort of the least bad option.

I try to go to the Lac du Flambeau pow-wow when I can. It is not a tourist pow-wow. It is a tribal annual meeting that has events that are open to but not designed for the general public.

Twitchy? Twitchy?!?
Timed a page refresh at 4 minutes, 41 seconds. That’s not twitchy, that’s incipient rigor mortis.
FlyingToaster
@NotMax: The site read “site temporarily unavailable” last night, so I went and did something else and on to bed.
This morning — and now afternoon — its all fine. All the buttons work, the thing blocked on the work browser is playing on the not-work browsers, and all is right with the world until the Senate votes.
Mac OS El Capitan, Firefox, Chrome, Safari.
Alain the site fixer
@Major Major Major Major: yes this site has tons of inherited creakiness and that’s something I had to learn and accept. Your quote rotator is the first thing that’s been restored to a prior glory – many things don’t work quite like they used to. Thanks again for the help.
And yes WordPress is a great engine and can run simply with a good paid-for theme and just a handful of plugins for security and functionality.

@chris: Seconding the rec for UBlock Origin. It works really well. I have it on my Mac and I have arrows.
chris
@Percysowner: I had to go out for a bit but I’m going to look at it now, thanks.
