Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

There will be lawyers.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if I ever tried to have some of you killed.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

… makes me wish i had hoarded more linguine

Fuck if i know. i just get yelled at when i try it.

I can’t take this shit today. I just can’t.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

Tick tock motherfuckers! Tick fucking tock!

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

‘Forty-two’ said Deep Thought, with infinite majesty and calm.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

I personally stopped the public option…

We are aware of all internet traditions.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

We can agree to disagree, but i’m right.

This blog will pay for itself.

This fight is for everything.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

According to Charles Johnson of LGF, Breitbart is hosting a hatefest at the thread about McCain’s tumor. Not going there to look. Personally I wish him a long and healthy retirement.

My favorites were the World War II analogies: One person asked him whether he would’ve said the invasion of Poland was a win for Hitler; another asked who had the Worst Week in Washington for the first week of December 1941: FDR or the isolationists.

At best the second-dumbest personality in “journalism,” working for at best the second-dumbest name in cable news. Chinchilla and the bullet-headed troll were made for each other.

True Story: For the latter three years of high school I participated in my school’s Brain Bowl, and all three times I went to the state level. For the state competitions we stayed at Disney’s contemporary resort, and because I was a news junkie but didn’t want to discuss politics with my teammates/roommates I’d satiate my fix by settling on the blandly nonpartisan CNN (as opposed to MSNBC). My senior year, I’m at Disney again (but this time as a tutor for my sister in an AA Studies competition), and I’m talking to someone when in the background Don Lemon asks if MH370 was sucked in by a black hole – which immediately struck me as the stupidest fucking thing I ever heard in the news that wasn’t discriminatory in intent. That was pretty much the last time I ever listened to CNN as a news source.

(BTW, if anyone is interested, my sister didn’t win that one, but my team placed third in the state Brain Bowl three weeks later).

    @Yarrow:

When CNN first started was it a good news network?

Actually, yes. Maybe not in the very beginning, but within the first two or three years. CNN made their bones in January 1991 covering the first Gulf War. They were fearless, and innovative, and put the three broadcast networks to shame. I remember seeing Tom Brokaw covering the first night of action, using CNN’s footage (because NBC had none of its own), and grudgingly but sincerely giving props to their upstart cable rival. Before that, it had been known, derisively, as “Chicken Noodle Network.” Not after the Baghdad Boys did their thing.

@Steve in the ATL: I once had a really rude client ask if our receptionist’s drapes matched her carpet – she responded, “Hardwood floors.” Dude was nonplussed and I didn’t need to beat the guy about the head and shoulders.

    @A Ghost to Most:

    Shortest: NOPE
    Short: DO NOT WANT THIS
    Longer:
I like the show, but it’s got its issues. Look, these are the guys that basically filmed Sansa Stark getting raped (which I had to fast forward past) & have frequently included unnecessary women only nudity that did not advance the plot in ANY way for 6 seasons. In addition they’ve failed to handle the racial issues of GOT with sensitivity sometimes. The fact they seemed surprised by the criticism of the white savior narrative underlying Daenerys’ whole storyline is concerning as well.

Add in that, we as a country, have never addressed in any comprehensive way the facts of our own history of slavery. For example, Sally Hemings was Thomas Jefferson’s captive, not his mistress; by any reasonable conception this means she was incapable of freely consenting to having sex with him that wasn’t buried under coercion, therefore he raped her.

Now imagine the inability to deal with just that one historical nugget, amplified into a story guided by these two white male show runners…& my mind goes: NO, thank you very much for your occasionally squicky entertainment, but definitely no.

So Cillizza is actually Trip Tripler, a minor character in Doonesbury who served as Will’s “quote boy.” Sadly, I can’t find any links to those delightful comic strips.

@A Ghost to Most: Knowing nothing else except the premise, I don’t necessarily see anything wrong with the idea itself, aside from being done to death already, only second to the “Nazis sin WW2” concept.

The Confederacy was never going to “win” the civil war, only make the Union cry uncle and get an uneasy peace.

Though banning slavery was explicitly prohibited by the Confederate constitution, its highly unlikely that de jure slavery would still exist in a present day CSA. International pressure, cotton coming from other sources, and mechanization would have eventually made the CSA ditch slavery.

@J R in WV: Thank you. The only downside of being an unintentional monastic is explaining to my separately coupled parents that how I celebrated my birthday was having a delicious peach from the farmer’s market for breakfast. Had to turn the convo to other things about them.

But the peach was singularly delicious, and fully appreciated by this little soul in body – and the day was fine and better for it.

I liked the LG&M wrap up of this. Especially to post of all Chris’ headlines since the 2016 campaign started. What a vacuous twit he is and CNN is an enabler in all this.
