If I click and the Ashcroft song is there, I will find a way to hurt you.

Frigging awesome. Thanks Adam.

Very cool video. Eagles are so magnificent. Earlier this year, I was captivated by an eagle cam, with parents taking turns with one guarding the nest and the baby while the other went off to procure food.

You’re safe. And therefore, so is Adam.

@Omnes Omnibus: I would not do that to you or anyone else.

I was doing some drawing today and I realized these two panels make a good ‘caption contest’ sort of thing.

Jr’s face is Cruzian level obnoxious. I’m throwing a kegger when that clown gets indicted. Everyone’s invited.

Totally subjective, but I’d celebrate more if/when Kushner gets fitted for an orange jumpsuit.

Stunning vid, Adam. Thank you.

For the night crew, just in case: Does anyone have friends in NC who want a calico cat?

I never truly realized how very weird birds are. Love them, but have to recognize they are not like us.

@Tenar Arha: I am in Ohio. My spouse is a sucker for cats, but we have four cats already, plus two cat-loving dogs. If life-threatening for cat I might let him consider.

@West of the Rockies (been a while): Oh yes we will celebrate the demise of them all in due course, FSM willing..

Incredible. I wish I could fly like that. Closest I’ve ever gotten to that is the Raptor at Cedar Point

On a bit of a tangent, lammergeiers and golden eagles will chase young/small ruminants off high ledges or carrying them off (along with chelonians) so as to drop them from said heights. Which is supposedly how Aeschylus died.

Eminem has something to say about that

Just spent way too many hours replacing a turn signal assembly on landlady’s car, which someone(s) had absconded with (entered her unlocked house and took only a spare key for the car), taken for a joyride (dirt, grass and branches embedded under the license plate and bumper) and crunched the corner of the front bumper enough to take out 2 lights, the turn signal (plug smashed) and a side parking light (lens destroyed). Longish story in full, and even weirder than that summation makes it sound, including their having switched batteries and where and how it was found.
Could not figure out why the brand new replacement unit’s screw would not engage with the corresponding hole in the retention strap (thought at first maybe the now new angle of the casing the assembly fits into was the problem) until got in really close with a strong light and discovered the head of the screw was stripped. Had to grip the pointy end with pliers and remove the screw that way until enough of the head was above the lens that could grip it there, then popped in a screw from the old damaged unit and voila.

Cool video, Adam.

Would an eagle’s eyes work the same as a human’s? Maybe they have some stabilizers in there to smooth out the motion.

@?BillinGlendaleCA: Not my vid, just found it posted on social media and figured it would do for a late night open thread. But thanks.

Thanks for beautiful and inspiring clip. I have to get back to Banff. That looks like a place I went through in Banff, Or maybe Jasper.

@?BillinGlendaleCA: Also a beautiful pic. LA is in a beautiful setting, when you can see it.
I spent time in San Gabriel valley one summer working. I remember looking at the vague outlines of the mountains, through the soft metallic haze of the mid summer smog. That was almost 20 years ago. I hope the air is better now.
frosty
@jl: The air is incredibly better now. I went to college in the San Gabriel Valley. It was honestly a month before I saw Mt Baldy 15 miles away. Now when I go back for a reunion the mountains are there all the time. Makes it a much more interesting place to live!

@frosty: Glad to hear it. I need to get down there and spend some time, Though will have to wait for some other trips Northeastward. And now after seeing the eagle vid, Banff and Jasper are on my mind.

Just in case Steve still could use some help
?BillinGlendaleCA
@jl:
@frosty: The air is much better now as frosty says. It’s still a challenge to photograph though. Most of the problem now is not the smog, though it’s still a factor, but finding a day where there isn’t a marine layer. The day I took that pic(from the area around Mt. Hollywood in Griffith Park) it was pretty clear but still a bit of haze. Here’s the left portion of that panorama so you can get an idea of the haze that was present.

Now that we have our first pet poop comment, I guess OK to bring up the ongoing Drumpf mess.
So these shitheads put out, as cover stories for the Russian meeting, that they were falsely enticed into the meeting by an offer to buy some HC oppo research from somebody fronted by a big shot Russian Laywer, but he really wanted to talk about the ban on adoptions of poor kids and orphans from Russia an how to get them lifted, which I guess is the prettiest face they can put on some deal on the sanctions.
That’s their cover story. Yeebus.

@Tenar Arha:
There is a calico cat rescue in Clover SC. Maybe they can give you a lead. 803-230-3648
jl
@?BillinGlendaleCA: Ha ha. Marine layer? Yeah, I remember the SoCal marine layer. We here in Northern California are pretty unsophisticated yokels compared to you very fancy Hollywood people. But at least we are honest. We say ‘fog’. It’s fog and low low cloud cover.
They can’t admit to fog and clouds in Southern California. Ha ha, marine layer. Right.
Anyway, glad the air is better. I’ll be down sometime to not see it for myself.

@SiubhanDuinne: Wow, that takes me back to Girl Scouts…Little Bunny Foo Foo…
?BillinGlendaleCA
@rikyrah: Thanks.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@jl: Hey, the weather dudes(and dudettes) call it marine layer. It’s not as thick as fog, but sort of a light fog. It’s not a yellowish or reddish color that you see with smog, it’s the marine layer.
jl
@?BillinGlendaleCA: Sometimes they call it the marine layer here to. But periodically they break down and call it what it is, fog and/or cloud cover.
I think it’s a racket to dupe the tourists? “Oh, hey, we don’t have fog and clouds in sunny California. There is this little ‘marine layer’ thing. Don’t worry about it, technical meteorological stuff. Don’t worry your little head about. You won’t notice it. ”
Yeah, sure, you won’t notice it unless you get out and want to see something before mid afternoon.
So, yeah, I fess up, we say that up here too. But sometimes we are honest about it.
SiubhanDuinne
@eclare:
Yeah, complete with gestures (“BOPPIN’ ’em on the head!”)
frosty
@jl: I lived on Ocean Beach in San Diego and Huntington Beach because I thought beach living would be bitchin’. It wasn’t. It was foggy every morning in the summer. I grew up in the east and I know what fog looks like. :-)
?BillinGlendaleCA
@jl: I think there may be a science to it, fog == less than a mile visibility, marine layer == greater than a mile visibility but not perfectly clear. Then again one of the local weather folk is also a comedian so take it with a grain of salt.
Divf
@frosty:
The rest is worth repeating, if only for the clever rhymes.
jl
@frosty: Yah, see, it’s tough out here. ya know. A lot youse guys thinks we’s sissies out here on the left coast, but we gotta be tough to stand up to the damn marine layer, ya know? Damn straight.
@?BillinGlendaleCA: It’s condensed water vapor that makes fog, or low cloud cover, some mish mash in between when cold marine water coming down from Alaska hits warmer air flowing out of the inland areas. That’s what it is. The behavior is more predictable in SoCal. Here in SF it’s pretty chaotic, how it’s going to act, how low and thick it is, and how long it will take to burn off. Much more often than in SoCal, it never burns off at all, until late afternoon, and when evening winds come off of the ocean (which I think is both a NorCal and SoCal thing). Then the whole day is mucked up.
Edit: sometimes its so bad in SF, visitors mistake what the marine layer is doing for light rain showers in July and early August. Real summer starts here between late August and early September.

Stunning video, Adam! I’m a climber and I think the video was made in a familiar area- the mountains above Chamonix. Definitely one of the most beautiful places in the world. The glaciers are in full retreat- sad!

@jl: yep im in San Diego and we experience this all the time. I am inland so i love the Marine Layer, it keeps us from broiling so early in the morning.
