One more victim of the Trump administration! Beaver-boy Chaffetz is the most transparent exemplar of that class of Repub opportunists who expected to be spending this and the next three years profitably “resisting” President Hillary Clinton from their cushy legislative positions. Having to actually legislate — especially under the ‘leadership’ of a bloviating narcissist like the Orange Outrage — just isn’t why young Jason went into the politics business.
(I did check Even McMullin’s Twitter feed, but he’s concentrating his attacks on Donald Trump right now. Guess Jason’s just not important enough for a prospective Utah legislator to notice…)

Anyway, glad he finally snagged a ticket out of town. He’s made noises suggesting he really wants to get out from under Congressional responsibilities asap, as of yesterday, or last month, or he wasn’t really around for any of this ever, when we think about it carefully enough.

Churchill was right America will after trying all of the bad options will finally settle on what they should have done in the first place.
Other than to a republican the fix Obamacare option should have been a no brainer (insert GOP w/o brain jokes here). The basic structure, laws, federal/state regulations, medical industry policies, procedures and software changes are done. The industry is settling into the new world so why upend it. I’m sure Obama can list the things that needed fixing without even getting into the sabotage that the GOP has done. The GOOPERS have been bragging about their 200 page Trumpcare vs the 1500 pages for Obamacare. I suspect that the fixes could be passed in a law that was less than 200 pages. How many words would it take to reinstate the risk corridors or guarantee the CSR(?) payments. Since there is a law suit over the mechanics of the payments, Congressional action would remove the uncertainty and help stabilize the exchanges.

The devil is in the details. And I want to see the cash on the table up front. If it is simply another example of Lucy and the football with a helping of Calvin ball at the last minute then I agree with you. What I’m afraid of is that they cut the deal and then on the last vote Yurtle pulls out the compromise legislation and substitutes Trumpcare. The senate then crams it down the throat of the House.
So in reality I think we will more likely find a Yeti lying down with a pink unicorn before that kind of bipartisan deal happens. But what I am 100% sure of is the narrative will be The D’s won’t reach across the aisle and comprise when 2-3 rouge R’s squeak about bipartisanship. 1. order more ships

@CZanne: Maybe it will work but I kind of like the good old days when they and their family lived in the DC area. It is a bit harder to call the guy from the other party the spawn of the devil when you are teach his son (in those days, but son or daughter today) to hit a curve ball in Little League or his daughter was going to the prom with your son.
It was Newton and his ‘reformers’ who made living in DC a sin. They preferred to sleep on a cot in their office. It was a sign of manliness.
Now however much they don’t deserve the stipend that old Jason is talking about, I would be willing to make a pack with the devil if the money went to defray the housing costs in the DC area AND it resulted in a more bipartisan approach to legislation and the people actually got their money’s worth from them doing their jobs. I don’t think that is going to happen since the problem isn’t their zip code but the way they view the other party.
So much of these debates would be unnecessary if the parties overlapped the way they did in the 50-70s. And the poli-sci research shows that the R’s have moved much further to the right than the D’s to the left. I don’t think there is any D as doctrinaire as Cruz.

So I don’t actually like the idea of the family moving to DC with the parent, or the parent being too old to have school-age children. I want the diversity of age and perspective in Congress, but I also think they need to be in district regularly. (Not that it seems to help. Nobody’s even seen Cory Gardner. He may be a hologram.)
I don’t know that any type of social engineering will fix this partisanship. Listening to Al Franken talk, they seem to try for comity, and it doesn’t help. Elaine Chao can knit a baby blanket for Al Franken’s grandchild, and they still backstab and sabotage. There is so much institutional dysfunction and there are so many people encouraging and participating in it, it may take a full reset to bring about a change.
The dorms are the best compromise I can come up with save for marooning them on an island, forcing cooperation to be able to eat, and employing a heavy-handed Exposition God to explain what they’re doing wrong. @d58826: The F/A-18 has a combat radius of around 400 miles. The longest range missile it can carry has a maximum range of about 600 miles. Math says that’s pretty much the only thing it can do outside the 900 mile limit. Ultimately the carrier will need to be protected by an upgraded AEGIS destroyer with the latest version of the Standard Missile(though those are intended for boost phase interception rather than terminal phase interception). They might need a new ABM system.
An Ohio class sub modified to carry Tomahawks in every silo could theoretically carry a couple hundred of them. A Ford Class carrier has about 40-50 strike fighters carrying up to 8 tons of ordnance each.
Another development option would be a long range strike aircraft capable of flying off the carrier. But they clearly are going to have to make adjustments.
