I edited that week's @TIME cover story on Kate Winslet by @MarkHarrisNYC, and can confirm it is real! https://t.co/KfdG7b6RtI
— Radhika Jones (@radhikajones) June 27, 2017
So much going on with the Senate Health Care Bill Tax Cut Bill that I don’t want you all to miss this:
The framed copy of Time Magazine was hung up in at least five of President Trump’s clubs, from South Florida to Scotland. Filling the entire cover was a photo of Donald Trump.
“Donald Trump: The ‘Apprentice’ is a television smash!” the big headline said. Above the Time nameplate, there was another headline in all caps: “TRUMP IS HITTING ON ALL FRONTS . . . EVEN TV!”
This cover — dated March 1, 2009 — looks like an impressive memento from Trump’s pre-presidential career. To club members eating lunch, or golfers waiting for a pro-shop purchase, it seemed to be a signal that Trump had always been a man who mattered. Even when he was just a reality-TV star, Trump was the kind of star who got a cover story in Time.
But that wasn’t true.
The Time cover is a fake.
There was no March 1, 2009, issue of Time Magazine. And there was no issue at all in 2009 that had Trump on the cover.
In fact, the cover on display at Trump’s clubs, observed recently by a reporter visiting one of the properties, contains several small but telling mistakes. Its red border is skinnier than that of a genuine Time cover, and, unlike the real thing, there is no thin white border next to the red. The Trump cover’s secondary headlines are stacked on the right side — on a real Time cover, they would go across the top.
And it has two exclamation points. Time headlines don’t yell.
“I can confirm that this is not a real TIME cover,” Kerri Chyka, a spokeswoman for Time Inc., wrote in an email to The Washington Post.
Time has responded:
UPDATE: @time has asked the @realdonaldtrump's businesses to remove the phony magazine covers from their walls. https://t.co/beJXOTrevb

Nothing surprises me about the douchebag-in-chief anymore.
I hope someone makes a “Putins Cock Holster” Time cover.
What is really pissing me off now is the fact the media has normalized his constant half retarded idiotic behaviour. To the point where they just ignore it now and continue to pretend that this guy is actually remotely qualified for the job on some level.
SiubhanDuinne
I love David Fahrenthold’s incisive articles, even when WaPo assigns him stories like this.
And even something as seemingly trivial as fake TIME Magazine covers contributes to the steady drip-drip-drip.

Even the ego-fluffing is all fake…I guess when you don’t have any real accomplishments to feel good about, lying is the way to go. Anyone with a real sense of pride in themselves and their work would find this kind of thing insulting. That he doesn’t speaks volumes (not that it’s telling us anything we don’t already know).

In the novel “The Death of Vishnu” (2001), author Manil Suri describes a civil servant in Bombay who lies about everything. Everything. Suri has a hilarious line — wish I had the book in front of me — about how the guy even even lies about what he has brought to the office for lunch, then has to go onto the roof of the building and eat by himself so that he won’t be found out. With people like Trump it’s as if the truth were difficult to enunciate and the lie is just a simple shortcut, a way to save energy. Add sociopathy and narcissism, and you get fake Time covers.

It’s like staring into a bottomless pit, trying to suss out just how needy a man Donald Trump is. Is he looking for validation? Constant reassurance? Does he cease to exist if the camera isn’t on him under the brightest spotlight?
I know that if Trump ever comments on these ersatz magazine covers, he’ll try to pass it off as just a joke, wasn’t meant to be taken seriously, the work of an overzealous underling, he didn’t know it was fake, and why is everyone so bent out of shape about it?

Apparently he was only on one time cover for real in 1989 until he “went into politics” and the person who actually has been on more time covers by far, is Nixon.
I have seen at least one article where his office wall was covered by framed magazine covers with him on it and what I noticed was that he had two copies of some issues scattered around to make the wall look more full. I thought it was sort of pathetic. I think the same article pointed out that he had covers and boasted about being on covers where the story was actually very unflattering but he didn’t care. I can’t even understand that.
If he was actually fooled himself by this fake, he must not have actually have opened the magazine cover.

Saw a pic of the meeting after the deathcare vote was delayed that they had between senators and Trump at the White House. Heller, Collins, and Murkowski flanking the shitgibbon. I sure hope their Democratic opponents grabbed copies of the photo. Whether deathcare passes or not, a candidate could run the photo and say “Here’s Senator Collins discussing with Trump how to gut your health insurance and bankrupt you.”
Along those lines, does anybody have a good photo of Ed Gillespie (R-Crazy Eyes), wingnut for governor in VA, at a Trump rally? I have one with a big Trump sign right behind him, but it’s poor quality.

Clearly white people born in 1940 are much, much more racists than whites born in 1920. LOL wut?
Smedley Darlington Prunebanks (Formerly Mumphrey, et al.)
Dude, Democrats have been trying to help white workers for, literally, more than 100 years. I don’t know what more Democrats can do for them. Five day workweeks? An end to hiring children? Social Security? Medicare? Lily Ledbetter? About 673,980 other things I can’t even think of offhand? All thanks to Democrats. Seriously, there is one party that has worked its ass off for years to help white workers, and over the last 30 years or so, white workers have rewarded this party–the Democratic Party, by the by, if you’re having trouble working out which one I’m talking about–by dumping their asses from power every other chance they’ve had. It seems to me that sooner or later, it should be up to white workers to take yes for an answer. I don’t know what else Democrats could do, other than fuck over Black people or something. But that isn’t happening. And if that’s what it takes to get white workers to vote for Democrats, then Democrats are going to ahave to keep on keeping on doing whatever they can for white workers without any thanks from them. Luckily for white workers, there is a party that assiduously looks out for their interests, even if they don’t have the sense to look out for their own interests.
Ben from Virginia
@Smedley Darlington Prunebanks (Formerly Mumphrey, et al.):
Bill Clinton had zero problems winning enough white voters to win the Rustbelt convincingly. Obama did it narrowly, but still enough to carry the Upper Midwest so easily it was referred to as a “Blue Wall”.
As recently as 2000 Al Gore won the “coal country” of West Virginia and eastern Kentucky convincingly! He and John Jerry won Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
Michael Dukakis actually won West Virginia, Iowa, and was more competitive in Ohio than Hillary Clinton was this year.
White people who voted for Obama twice all of a sudden became Klansmen after 2012? Is that what you’re trying to say?

Bernie made white voters aware that he was the Great White Hope, and that voting for him meant those voters had to reject women and minorities as allies.
That’s why they voted for Trump — because Bernie energized them into thinking of themselves primarily as white voters. So when Bernie’s candidacy flamed out, they chose the candidate that most resembled Bernie: Donald Trump.

@Ben from Virginia: I do believe the problem you’re having here is one of identity politics: you feel the need to defend the WWC from “attacks” even in the face of their own political hypocrisy.

White genocide snowflakes and Trumpsters come to mind with that phrase.
My personal gut reaction is that sometimes people like Roland Martin come close to sounding like that, if taken out of context.
But a big difference is that there are real race/ethnic specific policy issues underlying a lot of racial/ethnic minority commentary.
I don’t see one for whites. Sure, middle and working class whites have gotten hammered with growing wealth and income inequality, macro and trade policy that that targets workers, and the effect of crony capitalist and monopoly rent capitalism that seems to run the country recently. But those issues are not specific to them. Everyone below ‘millionaire’ has been hurt by them.

Most people vote on issues that they feel are important to them personally.
The vast majority of African-American voters switched to Democrat after the Republicans decided to use the Southern Strategy and race as a wedge issue. If by some strange turn of history, the policy stance of the parties switched, I think the vast majority of African-American voters would switch back.
A minority, and one growing ever smaller, of white bigots considers race ethnicity and national origin, and religion, per se, important enough to join a party or a movement based mostly on those issues. They make a hell of a lot of noise though. The only real racial identity politics today is practiced by an ever dwindling number of white bigots.
My personal opinion is that Hillary Clinton reluctance to go really aggressive on specific policy issues hurt her with minority voters in 2016. Any racial identity politics she practiced, which compared to the Trumpsters and GOP uses, was pretty weak tea, did not help her make a big turnout with those groups (though hard to say given the increase in voter suppression used against minorities, which is another real policy issue as opposed to identity politics)

On Nov. 8, hundreds of black and Latino students got into two separate battles in the streets around Wilmer Amina Carter High School in Rialto. Two days later, another interracial fight broke out on campus, and four days after that a huge battle erupted in the lunchroom, leaving 57 of the hundreds of students involved injured. At around the same time, more than 20 police officers broke up a series of street fights between black and Latino students outside Fremont High School in Oakland that involved as many as 150 participants and bystanders. In San Jacinto, a riot at San Jacinto High School between black and Hispanic students resulted in three arrests, six suspensions and the lockdown of 1,700 students. Some 500 students were involved in the fight, and police reported some arriving parents added fuel to the fire by shouting racial slurs and urging their children to keep up the battle. Similar racial conflicts hit Crenshaw, Manual Arts and Jordan high schools in Los Angeles.

Does anybody think this went down any other way?
Actually, I can see another scenario. Somebody is giving Trump some news he doesn’t want to hear so he just starts rambling about how he’s on the cover of Time magazine this week. “They sent me a framed cover, didn’t they?” Motions to underling who runs to call props to get a framed cover fast.

@different-church-lady: Sunlight is free. You have to pay for bleach.

@TenguPhule: Oh, so you’re one of those “get money out of politics” types, are you?
TenguPhule
@different-church-lady:
That sounds suspiciously like dessert heresy.

No shit.
However. The hold my beer and watch this credo is much stronger in the younger set and usually doesn’t end all that well. Sometimes hilarious, sometimes horrifying, still usually doesn’t end how the “planner” thought it would. OTOH old farts seem sometimes to have a bit too much of a positive view of themselves and think they have a clue how the world works, and set out to prove to everyone, not just their friends that they are right, damn it. Similar results, just on a larger scale.

@Ben from Virginia: Some white people are evil and do deserve to die. Because so many people in this country are intellectually lazy and apathetic, we’re in a place where we could see the end of true democracy in our lifetimes. A quasi-fascist one-party state ruled by and for oligarchs like the Kochs has a good chance of coming to pass because of bigoted idiots. All of us are reponsible for the world we live in. Trump voters (and GOP) helped make it worse

I Don’t Know How to Explain to You That You Should Care About Other People.

@Ben from Virginia: Not “white people.” Just you.
Some people just have the stench of how much they hate their parents coming through in every string of words they try to put together.

@different-church-lady: No, I just have an appreciation for how much bleach it takes to remove the scum of the earth. Cheaper to use a really big magnifying glass with solar assistance.

Hi Ben,
How do you feel about pie? Because that’s the only thing you’ll be talking about here, soon, if you keep up at this rate.
Take care,
JR
PS: One of my favorites is Pecan Pie, with a big side of vanilla ice cream, which cuts the richness of a proper pecan pie. Also, I use maple syrup instead of corn syrup for the filling the pecans float on.
Think about it, all pie all the time!!
Omnes Omnibus
@Major Major Major Major: Pssst! I think she believes all cats have super powers.*

@Omnes Omnibus: I assumed the question was because the cat is a character in a ghost story.
chris
@Major Major Major Major: My guess? Next time I reboot it’ll work but right now I have a bunch of open tabs, you know how it is. If I really thought I needed to pie someone I’d probably just skip the thread.

@Mike J:
This is a great idea. I would like to be able to add comments to the pie database, personally, because I do like a good pie. And I make a good pie. So I can type good pie comments, too. I am impressed with the wide variety of piey commentary, though!!

@J R in WV: Wow. Pie flavors/ingredients/options by comment. That is BRILLIANT.
I wonder about the efficacy of cutting a rich pecan pie with vanilla ice cream…vanilla ice cream seems to be rich. Is vanilla sherbet a go, with or without sprinkles?
