On the Road is a weekday feature spotlighting reader photo submissions.
From the exotic to the familiar, whether you’re traveling or in your own backyard, we would love to see the world through your eyes.
Good Morning All,
This weekday feature is for Balloon Juicers who are on the road, travelling, etc. and wish to share notes, links, pictures, stories, etc. from their escapades. As the US mainland begins the end of the Earth day as we measure it, many of us rise to read about our friends and their transient locales.
So, please, speak up and share some of your adventures, observations, and sights as you explore, no matter where you are. By concentrating travel updates here, it’s easier for all to keep up-to-date on the adventures of our fellow Commentariat. And it makes finding some travel tips or ideas from 6 months ago so much easier to find…
Have at ’em, and have a safe day of travels!
Should you have any pictures (tasteful, relevant, etc….) you can email them to [email protected] or just use this nifty link to start an email: Start an Email to send a Picture to Post on Balloon Juice
First up, from Mike Ryan:

The big surf and high winds were being utilized by scores of wave riders. It was fun to watch the surfers launch their boards into the waves.
This is the new slider for images – what do you think? I’m posting the originals below for comparison.
Please, let me know in the comments what you think of the slider and I’ll experiment so more.
Next up, from Carol Ryan (must be related, given the name and location!)
Where it was taken: Maui
When: March 31,2017
Other notes or info about the picture: This was taken at the top of the tallest peak of Haleakalā (“house of the sun”), at 10,023 feet. The plant is a silversword, only found at the summit, very rare. There is a high altitude observatory at the top, the first astronomical research observatory in Hawaii. I also included two pictures of Homer’s Grove (an experimental forestation project) in the fog, which was on the way to the summit.
Sorry for the mixed up text-to-pics order.

I realize that there’s one duplicate from a previous day but it’s part of the set!
And to wrap up the week, from JRinWV:
Swans at Yorktown, VA
These were swimming when we drove by visiting Williamsburg and Yorktown with friends not too long ago. Really lucky, shot from the car, sunshine right, everything perfect right out the window. I was just as glad to not get out of the car, Swans are notoriously aggressive and can to a lot of damage in no time. Taken with Panasonic Lumix FZ200 F2.8 24-600mm lens in 2013.
Note- this is the accordion slider – what do you think?

Have a glorious day and weekend, everyone!

Sigh. Sliders don’t work on mobile site. Too early to think or such so I’ll not be fixing today! Sorry mobile users, I’ll,try again Monday!
Alain the site fixer
I hid the post with no pics so your comments are gone too folks, sorry!
?BillinGlendaleCA
OK, there are pics now. I’ll post a link to this one anyway. Downtown LA from The Stadium.
ETA: I kinda like the accordion slider, not sure how it’ll work with my panos.
Le Comte de Monte Cristo, fka Edmund Dantes
I’ve generally had trouble staying up on a paddle board anywhere but a calm lake, so I’m afraid that windsurfing is outside my wheelhouse. It is a shame, because it looks super fun!

Both sliders only show the middle third or so of the pictures for me (vertically).

@Major Major Major Major: ditto here

@tybee:
If you click on any of the photos in the sliders you get a full sized single photo, which works OK. But I don’t like the sliders because they shrink the pix… if there was a how-to legend to let folks know to click for the full sized photos — maybe bettah?
Major Major Major Major
@J R in WV: One click too many for people who just wanna see full-size pictures.
rikyrah
The pictures that showed were beautiful. …sigh
?BillinGlendaleCA
@Major Major Major Major: I have Hover-Zoom+(Chrome extension), leave the mouse over the image for half a second and i see the full image.
OzarkHillbilly
Sorry. The slider sucks. I don’t get the full size image. Clicking on it just gives me a larger 1/3 pic.
satby
Thanks to both Mike and Carol for the couple of pics I see. Some day I want to visit the mysterious foreign island in the Pacific ocean that Republicans don’t realize is a state.
Hope you rerun JR’s pictures tomorrow, because I’m not seeing anything there but code.I don’t know what’s different from the first time you did the sliders, they worked on this tablet, but now I’m only seeing single pictures and code.
raven
Caught a decent whiting and an ocean cat. It’s pretty rough for here, 2-3 ft surf , so making it out past the first break to cast kicks your ass. It sounds like it’s the same down there now but I’m off to take sunrise pix.
Alain the site fixer
@satby: the code is from seeing the mobile site and the slider from days ago was external from the site which is why it showed. I’ve got some site maintenance tomorrow and I’ll see what I can do and I will rerun these Monday!
OzarkHillbilly
@raven: We want to see them.
Currants
@J R in WV: Interesting–I can get that (full picture by clicking) only for the accordion slider, not for the first one. (Am reading on an iPad)
raven
Well shit, got busted for having Bohdi on the beach before sunrise. I’ve never seen the cops down there this early. Now we have keep the dogs off the beach for the 10 days we are here. That and a fog bank rolled in and there were no sunrise colors.
Currants
LOVED the photos. Especially loved the wind surfing/sailing ones. Watched about 30 of them on Revere Beach (slightly north of Boston) last summer–I could have watched for HOURS. I’m not sure what they were called–they were sort of like skate board surf boards, short, and the better riders did a lot of aerial and spinning stuff on them.
(ETA: Made me want to learn how to do it, even at my age–that momentary airborne weightlessness reminds me of the best moments skiing, which I gave up years ago because it was so expensive. So…probably this will be the same!)
OzarkHillbilly
@raven: Sucks to be Bohdi. Did you get a ticket or just a warning?
Quinerly
Love the pictures I could see on my phone. Thanks to the posters….thanks, Alain.

LOVE THE PHOTOS
lurker dean
love the pics, esp maui, one of my favorite places. for me, the slider presentation would be fine if the pics were bigger without having to click on them separately.
WaterGirl
@raven: oh, raven, that sucks. for you and the dogs.
WaterGirl
@OzarkHillbilly: I’ll bet raven would gladly trade a ticket for being able to have the pups on the beach for vacation. But I’m sure you know that already, so I’ll just save to you and say ‘hi’.
droog
How would we get the pic descriptions using the slider? Contributors offer good info on the origin of most pictures, so the slider would need to have a sizeable caption box.
Also too, the slider didn’t work for me via my newsfeed site. I use Feedbin. It is pretty good a displaying embedded media, but the slider tanked. (Don’t know if the cause of this problem is related to the cause Alain indicated concerning mobile sites).
tybee
@raven: ocean cat = gaffsail? or a hardhead?
