This should apply to every last Congresscritter with an -R behind their names. They’re all worthless and weak. Drop and give me 20!
efgoldman
How the hell many Sessionses are there? Are they all related? Are they all racist fuckstains?
p.a.
Apologies if I missed it earlier but Chuck Berry, RIP.

A nice counterpoint to “Lock her up!”

@Villago Delenda Est: Fucking traitors…
Boy that crowd shouting is wonderful…

@p.a.: See the tail end of the thread below for the Chuck memorial…
Oatler.
“Those infernal drums, Carruthers!”
Hal
I hope this energy and momentum lasts until 2018. Just the thought of these scum bags giving concession speeches brings a smile to my face. If anyone can inspire long term derision and contempt for Republicans in Congress, it’s tRump.
Villago Delenda Est
@Oatler.: “I’m sure, Congressman, that they’re saying ‘Boo-urns’.”
(blank stare from Sessions)
“Sorry, best I can come up with on the fly.”

@Hal:
Seriously? With what the GOP is doing? They aren’t going to change, so why would the reaction to them change?
germy
debbie
@germy:
That’s Trump for you. More Goofus than Gallant.
efgoldman
@germy:
Do you know how stupid and pathetic he has to be for a government official IN GERMANY (!!) to call him out publicly?
Quinerly
@p.a.:
Chuck was a great friend of my St. Louis city neighborhood (Soulard). I had the great pleasure of meeting and hanging with him over the years…and had the great honor of driving him in the late 1980’s in our parade when he was our neighborhood’s Mardi Gras Grand Marshall. Beloved in my town. He will be missed.
Hal
@debbie: Huh?
Wag
@germy:
And it warms my heart that the Foriegn Minister wasn’t just talking about the size of Trump’s hands, but instead letting the world know Germany’s feeling about the man in whole.
Pogonip
He was, I believe, the last surviving father of rock and roll. May he duckwalk into heaven, playing his guitar, and start the angels dancing.
Wag
@Pogonip:
This.
debbie
@Hal:
Trump is Goofus.
Villago Delenda Est
@Quinerly: Very, very cool. Glad you and your neighborhood had such a great experience, and yes, his passing will unquestionably mean more to you and your neighbors than the rest of us, because you got a chance to know him in person.
germy
@Pogonip: Little Richard still lives.

Just learned my kid’s HS girls just won the NorCal D1 basketball championship and are in the state championship, which will be a home match at our new NBA arena. Schweet!

@Villago Delenda Est:
He actually was a bigger friend to University City (urban suburb of St. Louis…where Washington University is located). He had a monthly residency at Joe Edwards’ club…Blueberry Hill. Played over 200 shows there over the last several years. I think he has been in declining health since 2014. Last European tour was in 2013, I think. New album (first in 40 years)due out this year.

@debbie: Many voters seem really good at forgetting, even the recent past. Reminding will be needed.

U.S. House, Texas District 32 General Election, 2016
Party Candidate Vote % Votes
Republican Pete Sessions Incumbent 71.1% 162,868
Libertarian Ed Rankin 19% 43,490
Green Gary Stuard 10% 22,813
Total Votes 229,171
Be realistic. Sessions is not going anywhere, despite the meeting and chanting. Those numbers are why he acted like that. Unless a 100,000 voters chant, Sessions is safe
germy
@Quinerly: I’ve been waiting for that album ever since I learned about it last year.
I read he fainted during a New Year’s Eve performance (2014?) so I suspected he was ailing, but I was pleased to learn he was recording again.

@efgoldman:
There’s composer Roger Sessions. I have no idea what his personality was, but at least he was a productive member of society.

Another St. Louis legend (and acquaintance) Johnnie Johnson…the basis for “Johnny B Goode.” A sweet and kind man who we lost over 10 years ago….Great guy who would play pretty much anytime you asked him. I’m blessed to live in a great city neighborhood with 30 bars…jazz and blues! And of course, rock ‘n roll!
Achrachno
@Thadeu: The Libertarians and Greens can put up candidates, but Dems can’t? We’re never going to win that way.
Doug R
@Thadeu: No Democrats ran? That is inexcusable. You run a candidate for EVERY seat, no matter what the odds.
Ruckus
@Thadeu:
There are democrats there. They may not have ever given a good showing or even run because the majority of the district were happy with their choice. If they are no longer happy there is an opportunity to at the very least make him work for it. And maybe an opportunity to take it away from him. It wouldn’t take all that many seats being lost for the political structure of this country to change. People are upset with what the republicans are really trying to do and they aren’t all democrats. This is how change happens, someone shits the bed and everyone finally knows what kind of asshole they are.
mai naem mobile
@Thadeu: I am not saying you’re wrong but wasn’t there something about the Texas redistricting map being struck down? Would that help a Den in Sessions’ district?
Quinerly
@germy:
Some press a few months back about the new album. His website makes me too of it. Just checked. I think it has been about 2 1/2 years since he played out and about in St. Louis. I put a question out on FB a few minutes ago to friends who know his daughter very well. I’ll pass along any info that I can. St. Louis is a small town…music community is like a family.?
germy
@Doug R: Remember the old Rudy Clark song (covered by George Harrison)?

We cannot even be allowed to feel good for a short time. Someone has to come and tell us how we are doomed.
germy
@schrodingers_cat: I believe this current administration is a wake-up call for people who didn’t bother to vote, and I think many of them will be lining up in ’18.
Saw Eric Holder on TV today, and I’m hoping he helps in the fight against voter suppression.

@germy: I am suspicious of the people whose nyms I haven’t seen before who make it a point to come into threads with the sole objective of spreading doom and gloom.

I’ve been lax in harassing Darrell Issa since I got sick. I had sent a letter to the local editor about his telephone town hall and it was printed but not posted online. Today I decided to open the mail piling up on my desk. I found this letter from a local progressive group (I think it’s the local Democrats) and online there was this letter, supporting mine, both from total strangers. I am psyched up again to resume the fight and am happy to have found local allies.
germy
@schrodingers_cat: Agreed.
And believe it or not, I think Gorka himself turned up (under a pseudonym) in the LawyersGunsMoneyBlog comments, defending his dissertation.
schrodingers_cat
@germy: What was his dissertation about, do I want to know?
Marcopolo
@Thadeu: Look at the results on the presidential line in Sessions district in ’16. Hillary beat Trump. This is a winnable seat.

@Doug R: stop it! There are places where there just arent dems. You cant make people run.
Doug R
@germy: @Aimai: Then you aren’t a national party and don’t deserve to govern. You run someone in EVERY seat.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
if anyone’s seen the internet “meme” of Uday Trump looking thoughtful in the woods, I think this is one of the best captions I’ve seen
Achrachno
@germy: The Greens can manage run a campaign, so certainly Dems can come up with the money. No excuses! No accepting guaranteed losing strategies, like a blank on the ballot. Even a pro-forma effort can at least help build the base.
Tom
@Thadeu: Thadeu – ordinarily I’d agree with you, but there’s nothing ordinary about this. Run a Dem in everyone of those 438 districts and make them defend them all. No more safe havens. Make them work for every vote. I think there will be some very pleasant surprises. And even the ones who squeak in when they were expecting to cruise in with 30% plus will be looking over their shoulders, which is exactly what we want them to do.
jl
@Tom: Trump is a danger to the country and our society and world. So, I agree. If there is a time to pull out all the stops and put a challenger in every district, state and local, it is now. We can ask plenty of questions that they will not be able to answer, and every single one of them needs to be challenged. I’m stashing away money already to spread around for 2018.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
@Aimai: I don’t know what’s the more difficult challenge, finding the money or the candidate. You look at the challenges we’ve had with unvetted, un-practiced candidates: the guy in MT who seemed like a sure thing, then it turned out had plagiarized his thesis at the War College. The doctor in AZ who had a real if long shot and then made some asinine remark about Candy Crowley, Bruce Braley mocking farmers in FUCKING IOWA! and the big Magilla, John Fucking Edwards.
It’s not as easy as just saying “Fifty State Strategy” over and over again.
Omnes Omnibus
@Doug R: Luis Gutierrez and Dan Lipinski did not have any opponents in the general election. It happens.

I saw an interesting letter to the editor today:

Thadeu
@Ruckus:
That is “God is a white NRA member” country. You can create some trouble for Pete, that’s all. At best you can get a moderate rethug after primarying him in 2018.
I posted downthread in Betty’s post on Vern Buchanan. Now that guy can be fired from his job if the Dem’s get their act together. With a modicum of effort, dems can make him give up his seat.
germy
@Jim, Foolish Literalist: It’s been a tough life for him.
Stumble into a recording booth in his sweatpants, growl “To infinity and beyond!” and pick up a check for a couple of million dollars.

@Jim, Foolish Literalist: Someone is auditioning for the role of Craig T. Nelson.
Achrachno
@Aimai: I doubt there are many districts with no Dems. In fact, I’m sure there are none where we’re less than 10%, even in the most perverted neighborhoods. And composition can change and miracles do happen (rarely). My own district (admittedly in CA) used to be solidly R, hopeless, and was represented by one of the more worthless members of congress (Calvert) who still always got reelected solidly. Population change and boundary alterations came — and now I’ve been represented by Mark Takano for 2 terms. But, even in the dark years we kept trying & always ran someone against the Rs, even if a sacrificial lamb.
Villago Delenda Est
@Jim, Foolish Literalist: I am getting so tired of these delicate snowflakes whining about how they are so oppressed because their politics reek of racism, sexism, religious bigotry, and fascism.

@Aimai:
Where are these places? I live in a ruby red county, but even here the Dem, whatever Dem, gets 35% of the vote – WHEN A DEM RUNS. Twenty-nine percent of the people in Sessions’ district were willing to throw away their vote on a protest candidate. (Or do you really think this Texas district has that many Libertarians and Greens?) How many more votes would have gone non-Republican if there had been a Democrat on the ticket?
Sometimes the pendulum runs against you, but next year, there will be NO EXCUSE to not run a Democrat in every district nationwide. The Republicans are daily demonstrating that they are incapable of governing, have an outright cruel and merciless agenda, and are led by a MADMAN. If we can’t pull out a wave election in 2018, the mother of all waves, when CAN we?!

@germy: This news about Tim Allen depresses me more than it should because I loved Galaxy Quest, one of the best Star Trek movies ever made. Damn it.

Lots of artists and writers and scientists believe and sometimes say horrible things. Sometimes I boycott them, sometimes I pick and choose. People are complicated, as is our reaction to them. But in general, while I might take note of their opinions, I don’t let people who show they know little or nothing outside their profession have much of an impact on how I think about politics or economics or …
Cheers,

As for Rep. Sessions on the verge of losing his seat, it is way too early to tell at this time, but with the way the Republicans are failing to govern and constantly stepping in their crap, the signs are not good.
In the last election, an unfavorable Clinton pushed the delta between Republican and Democrat to be smaller, and also one that Clinton actually won in Sessions district. The district’s in the Metroplex (DFW) are going to change with the population boom already happening in the last 20-years and projected to continue in the same trajectory for the next 20-years. The days of the old Deomcrat representative of 30+ years ago or today’s Republican will not be a given in future elections.
Ramalama
I’ve been heartened by the uprising via Indivisible groups. But then Samantha Bee killed that feeling. Rightfully.
nominus
Clinton won TX-32 overall but Sessions ran unopposed. There are now at least two declared candidates on the Dem side: a high school teacher who needs to get the money and signatures to file, and an avowed former Republican and Bernie supporter who has a head start on the campaigning.
Honestly, if a good old corporate Dem like the Mayor of Dallas decided to run for that seat, they could probably win it, but those candidates are more of a target for populist anger rather than people who can harness that anger. I’m not sure our district is quite angry enough to go Yellow Dog and vote the weird or inexperienced candidates against a lifer like Sessions, but we’ll see what we have by the time the primary rolls around.
