Encouraged to see all the Red Shirts out today–something I would have never said on the bridge of the Enterprise.

#InternationalWomensDay has always been a big deal in the Soviet Union and Russia. Today is the first time I've seen it celebrated in the US

It’s notable that most of the local and national reporting I saw on Women Stay Home from Work was done by… women.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
I find that really interesting
Yarrow
@Jim, Foolish Literalist: Me too. Not quite sure what to make of it.
efgoldman
@Jim, Foolish Literalist: @Yarrow: Going back to Soviet days, women held a lot of jobs, from doctor to assembly line worker, that were normally “men’s work” in the West.
Cacti
I was thinking that for a lot of deplorables, “a day without a woman” is pretty much any day that ends with “y”.

@Jim, Foolish Literalist:
Yes, indeed. The US establishment has always gone out of its way to suppress the development of any sort of international solidarity by Americans, like how the international May Day worker’s day was co-opted into the national Labor Day in September.
Sometimes I’m convinced the incredibly dense parochialism of American mass media and ignorance of the rest of the world is part of the same deliberate ideology.
drylake
Pretty sure the US is the outlier here, as March 8 is a big deal both in the PRC and in Taiwan.

No, it matters to them. They have to get off their asses and get their own beer.

Since this is an open thread, here is something I found at democraticunderground.com
“Details of Russian financing of Trump are soon going to emerge, thanks to a lawsuit filed by a disgruntled Bayrock associate, Jody Kriss”

On the other hand, so many people say that THEIR tidbit is the smoking gun to take down Trump.

Slate (I think) had a good article on the history of international women’s (worker’s) day and its watered down non-labor American version. I learned much.
Love the Furiosa poster.

What the Trumpers and their ilk throughout history have striven to do is to lower the discourse to their own despicable level. To frame the discussion in their own terms. The way to counter this is to refuse to accept their arguments (such as they are) on the frame they insist upon.
The world, our life, is not shit, it’s not afraid and it’s not premised upon the assumption that it’s horrible and more horrid crap is soon to follow, unless we…
Fuck those fuckers. I will not knuckle under and you shouldn’t either.

I was not able to take time off work today since I’m taking a scheduled vacation next week, but I was heartened to see how many people (both men and women) were wearing red today.
Origuy
I was in Moscow four years ago today. Women’s Day is a big deal there. Men are expected to give flowers to just about every woman they know, and Russians give flowers a lot anyway. It’s a work holiday for a lot of people. We went to a museum that was free that day.
Oatler.
How about a Lysistrata Day? That would cause commotions!

@Origuy:
And yet… this is also the country that just decriminalized domestic violence. So… huh.

@Millard Filmore:
I’ve been thinking for a while that since his Atlantic City debacle, a sizable portion of Trump’s business plan involved laundering money for the Russian mob. Look at those wildly inflated prices they paid for properties of his. Doesn’t make sense unless a good chunk of his profits returned to them under the table to be stashed in the Caymans, safely out of Putin’s reach.
There was an item in the famous Dossier that didn’t get much attention and which I think could spell real trouble for Trump. That was something that alleged that Trump was reporting to the Russian government on the personal and financial doings of Russian oligarchs in the US. Doesn’t matter if it’s true or not – if they THINK it’s true, could open up a whole different avenue of danger for him, and one that doesn’t rely on Republicans in Congress to do something about it.

Random question: how do I get a sleeping cat off my leg without waking her?
sukabi
@Amir Khalid: you don’t.
Repatriated
Accept that you’re going to wake the cat.
Offer treats as an apology.
That and kind words might suffice.
Origuy
@Amir Khalid: Do as the Prophet did, cut it off to avoid waking her.

@Joyce H: Yeah, well, there’s Moscow and then there’s the rest of Russia. I don’t know how the vote went down, but I suspect it broke along those lines.
