quick note to all registered Democrats.
You need to check on your state and congressional districts to make sure you have Democratic candidates in ALL of them.
there are filing deadlines approaching and as always the party is failing to challenge every seat.

I’ve been having stomach issues so I get an ultrasound in the am!
Baud
@raven: Hope it’s nothing.
PaulW
@Baud:
some states have protracted filing requirements. It wouldn’t hurt to make sure. there have been too many unchallenged seats the last 10-12 years.
Baud
@Major Major Major Major: Ugh.
Brachiator
Has there ever been a stage production about Douglass, kinda like Mark Twain Tonight?
Baud
@PaulW: Agree. I hope we have candidates everywhere. Give people an electoral way to oppose Trump, if nothing else.

This video was shot literally blocks from the neighborhood where my sister and my nephew live.
My sister lives in the area hit…but her house is OK…wind damage and stuff and electricity out along with 6500 other customers.
My coworker on the other hand, lived even closer to where the tornado hit…she was at work and her daughter called and said she could hear the tornado was over the house and she was taking shelter and that she loved her and then her daughter’s phone went dead.
She of course left work ASAP and headed out to the area. She made it to the blockade and then had to walk the rest of the way home. She made it to her house and there was wind damage and roof and siding damage, but her kids, esp her daugher, were safe.
She then walked to her parent’s home which was even closer to the hit zone and they had real damage including car port roofs torn off and partial roof collapse and of course no power. She has family in the area and they plan to lock up and get somewhere with room and board.
I made it home after work in about the same time as usual. Traffic as usual to the East, but with exits on I-10 closed…more slow moving…
But my mom is good and still with electricity. All in all though, no injuries and no fatalities in my little circle.
Prayers and light to my fellow East NOLA residents who had more damage. Hope everyone is ok and that all the damage stays being property and not human lives.
Who would ever think tornadoes in NOLA, and hurricanes up north…CLIMATE CHANGE IS REAL!
raven
@Baud: Yea, it’s just mild. The princess thinks it’s stress but I don’t know how that could be.

For people in the Chicago area, Civil War scholar David Blight will be giving a lecture about Frederick Douglass at Northwestern this month, but I don’t have the exact date. It popped up when I was searching for something else.
(If you remember that iTunes U class about the Civil War that was all the rage a few years ago, Blight was the professor. Really smart guy who knows his shit and doesn’t suffer fools.)

God what I wouldn’t give for a Lincoln, Douglass revival (Frederick obviously). Douglass especially; I bet he would be great on video.

@lamh36:
Yikes! I’m used to tornadoes from growing up in IL, but do you folks in NOLA even have basements to hide in like we did, or is the water table too high?
raven
@efgoldman: Yea, since I had a colonscopy and hernia surgery in August I’m due for easy.
raven
@Mnemosyne: Basements! The cemeteries are above ground.

@raven: hope nothing serious turns up! Feel better soon raven.
lamh36
@Mnemosyne: no basements in NOLA…and after Katrrina…many homes have been built to above flood levels…so inclined or in some places..added height…
On the local news they showed a guy who’s home had over 6ft of flood waters due to Katrina. He came back and he rebuilt. Now a decade later, this tornado touches down and he home is again in need of rebuilding…smh

And I sit here looking at those approval numbers. Trump and the GOP haven’t exactly made their agenda a secret. So…
WHY THE FUCK DIDN’T ALL OF THOSE PEOPLE DISAPPROVING OF HIM GET OUT OF THEIR RECLINERS AND GO VOTE AGAINST HIM?!? FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK….

@efgoldman:
Non invasive tests are great, far as they go. You want the “right” test for the diagnosis. That is what you want though of course, none of us want invasive if we can avoid…

@lamh36: NOLA has had more than its share of horrible weather events. I’m glad you and yours are Ok, and I’m sorry about the damage. :-(
Yes, the climate is changing in scary ways. It was 71F here in the DC area today, with a chance of snow on Thursday. Not normal. :-(
Stay strong, and best of luck!

He was born Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey, so you would really have to work at that lyric.
The musical of his life would include a lot of show stoppers. And William Lloyd Garrison might be his Aaron Burr.

@lamh36:
This is a win for the Dems. They don’t have the votes to stop Sessions, but now they have nearly every Republican Senator on record as (a) not wanting to hear criticism of Sessions; and (b) refusing to hear what Coretta Scott King said about him.
Brachiator
I’m sure there is a way to praise him in the … right way, and chew up time.

@Martha:
Tornados are scary af. I was smack in the middle of one back in April 1998, in the northern suburbs of Atlanta. There are places where to this day I will glance up and feel the shock of seeing sky instead of a tree canopy. It downed literally tens of thousands of trees in a matter of one or two minutes. Just terrifying.

I keep wondering why people think it’s a good idea to use the word “grab” when they’re discussing SCROTUS-Asterisk.
lamh36
Steve in the ATL
@SiubhanDuinne: I remember that. One of law school friends lost his roof that night.
The next day Dunwoody looked like a war zone, or at least every third lot did. We would see a family sobbing on the sidewalk in front of the ruins of their home, then two doors down people would be playing tennis. Tornadoes are odd. And dangerous. And scary.
Omnes Omnibus
@raven: Well, you do seem so mellow. Good wishes for you.
Along the same lines, my mom is having her second hip replacement on Thursday. I am still a bit peeved with her about this. She should have done it two years ago. She has spent two years in unnecessary pain. I hated spending two years seeing the look on her face when she moved “wrong” – the fact that she couldn’t walk more than a block or two without pain. OTOH, it is major surgery and she is 75.
Steve in the ATL
@raven: good luck with the gut check!
Mnemosyne
Since we’re doing health checks, all reports from IL are that my mom is recovering nicely from her open heart surgery. I pressured my nieces and nephews to send her actual paper get-well cards since her memory will probably be wonky for a bit longer and I sent the brother who’s been caring for her a gift basket of beer that should arrive tomorrow, but that’s pretty much my sole contribution.
(Well, I sent flowers for her hospital room, but that’s kind of the minimum required.)
SiubhanDuinne
@Steve in the ATL:
Remember practically every other roof was covered in blue tarp for months on end.
I lived in an apartment just off Peachtree Industrial. The tornado touched down about 50 yards from my unit and did major devastation, then picked up and missed me completely.
The cat and I spent the night in the bathroom, the only room in the place with no windows. I made a makeshift bed in the tub, and lit every candle I owned. I was never quite sure if that was so I could have enough light to read, or if atheist me secretly thought it would be good policy to have a lot of votives going.

I was into Frederick Douglass before anybody else — used to see him in a small club in west Berkeley. He sold out after his first album. (But then, who didn’t?)
Larkspur
Somebody please explain the Douglass event on February 29 because I don’t get it on account of there’s no February 29 this year and all the guests are dead. Is it like sardonic and I’m too dense or anxious to appreciate it? My guts are causing me distress also but I have had all the diagnostic works done and there’s nothing at all wrong, which is good, because who wants a big Something Wrong, but my guts don’t know nothing is wrong and ow ow ow. Guts are complicated and stress can mess you up bigly but it’s a drag when you can’t seem to find any tactic or routine that helps. So never mind I am going to go pet the golden retriever now. It’s therapeutic. Anyway it’s all okay because there’s Nothing Wrong. FML.
Anne Laurie
@Larkspur: At his official Black History Month breakfast — stocked with African-Americans who’d worked for Trump, mostly on his reality shows — Trump spewed out some word salad which seemed to indicate he had no idea who Frederick Douglass was. But he did seem to think Douglass was still alive…
That led to a spate of tweets congratulating this ‘new up & comer’ Douglass; I thought the one I put at the top was the funniest, especially since those (deceased) Black musicians are the only ones Trump could probably name (well, except maybe Kanye West).
Larkspur
@Anne Laurie: It is the next morning and I am now less uncomfortable and a little more organized (ha) mentally. I now get it, and I thank you for your patient explanation. To give this comment some value, I hope everyone knows that Douglass’s autobiography is available online at Gutenberg. I’ve been reading it now and then, and now seems like a good time to return to it as an antidote to icky word salad.
