Here’s how the brittle narcissist who will be President of the United States in nine days spent his morning so far:
So the man who owes his squeaker EC victory in part to fake news is shrieking that he’s the victim of fake news. We’re supposed to dismiss the intel reports on the say-so of the foreign autocrat who allegedly has Twitler by the short-n-curlies.
We’re supposed to take Trump’s word for it that he has no business dealings with Russia, even though he refuses to release his tax returns and other financial information that could verify the claim, and one of his own sociopathic whelps is on record bragging about Russian money flowing into TrumpCo.
And the situation is comparable to Nazi Germany — with Trump as the victim.
This is real life, folks, but damned if it still doesn’t seem like some queasy nightmare conjured by late-night pizza and cheap booze.

I love how these insane Tweets are now just considered the norm for a President of the United States.
Political media can tell me all they want that “institutions” are bearing up under Trump- it’s bullshit and anyone who chooses to look can see it’s bullshit.
He lowers standards every single day. There won’t be anything as dramatic as a collapse. It’s corrosion.
I don’t know what anyone can do about it- he’s the President, this is the shit he says, it’s news and has to be reported. But I DO know I don’t have to pretend he isn’t lowering every standard out there. He is. I get that pretending everything is FINE has upside and maybe media are required to adopt this pose but the rest of us do not have to deny what is right in front of our noses. I have no patriotic duty to do that.

Delurking after weeks of news blackout, and years of no comment to ask, “who cares?”. This was reported in the campaign, but Trumps got the rubes conditioned to hate the lying press. So what, 60% of us care? They won. We follow this stuff obsessively. What about the Repubs says to you, “we improbably won! We knew this stuff, but let’s anger our base and get rid of our meal ticket on the pinnacle of our triumph”? These people are evil. They are right now trying to figure out how to get food stamps to starve people to give Ricoh people tax cuts. They let this happen. They aren’t/can’t save us. Trump isn’t like real people. He’s not going to quit. Real world, he either stays, burns down the house, we all pay (he’s a lady grabber, so what, he wees on people? he’s doing the whizzing, he looks strong!) or he resigns, the wingnuts are done, they burn it all down. Where do we win in this? We get to be catty from the Internet and right while Pres. Pence leads us to Jesus? Trump is so bad God’s Cyborg Vessel on Earth/dumbest man in politics is the liberal best hope? I’ll eat my hat if those venal dogs McConnell & Ryan do the right thing and not let us be ruled by a kgb agent, but I just tickled myself thinking about either of them noticing the right thing to do even if it was taking care of their kids and cleaning their houses everyday. @From Both Sides of the Pond: Trump said one true thing during the campaign: He really could shoot someone in the face on 5th Ave, and his supporters wouldn’t abandon him. They have no love for decency, or they wouldn’t support a vulgar lout like Trump.
But most voters didn’t vote for Trump, and he’s a historically unpopular incoming president — he’s starting out at 37%. I don’t expect the craven bastards in congress to act out of patriotism, but I do expect them to pursue their own interests and enhance their own electoral prospects. And the minute Trump becomes a liability, they’ll turn on him like the ravening pack of hyenas they are.

This is a great way to keep folks from paying attention to key nomination hearings. I couldn’t a flying fuck how many girls Trump watched piss on each other and any revelations about sordid sexual activities among rich white men are simply not surprising and unless someone is getting arrested, don’t matter, it’s the people around Trump who are the danger and the Republicans have lined up a murderer’s row of vile people to take key government positions.
But all we’re gonna see and hear is this shit and it’s essentially meaningless because sitting through long boring hearings and researching the past actions of potential cabinet members is hard fucking work, but reporting and speculating about sexual improprieties is far more fun and far more lucrative. It has no bearing on policy or on the damage these nominees can do to our governmental framework but as long as Trump tweets nonsense in response to salacious rumors the media will eat this crap with two spoons and then try and feed it to us while Jeff Sessions will be confirmed as AG.

I didn’t think spy agencies had a sense of irony, but the irony here is rich: Obama makes public the fact that the Russians tried hard to intervene in U.S. affairs by throwing the election to Trump, not by hacking but by strategic leaks and disinformation. Trump’s first instinct, which, being the idiot that he is, he broadcasts with a megaton horn, is to state that he is going to restructure intelligence agencies because they have become too politicized. A few days later, we are now starting to learn that not only did the Russkies try to intervene but that they might have been informing and maybe even conspiring with members of Trump’s team and that they have lots of negative, blackmail worthy information about Trump. So Trump goes on another twitter tear. Hasn’t gotten the message at all, that the spy agencies are like a cobra and every time he breathes (tweets) their grip around him is likely to get tighter. He is stuck. If he keeps praising Putin he kind of validates their intelligence, but he is probably scared shitless at what Putin might do if Trump doesn’t perform as his special puppet. A smarter man would manage this more effectively, but a smarter man probably wouldn’t be in this position to begin with. I don’t really care whether it affects “his” special snowflake voters, whose relationship to reality is highly questionable, because what matters is that it distracts him to the point of madness and keeps him off balance and out of control and unable to roll over his opposition in the same way that Reagan and Bush II did. Anyone who can’t see that and at least try to gain advantage is too self-loathing or cowed to be of much use anyway.

Barbara
@Humboldtblue: Because no one can ever care about more than one thing at a time?

The CIA went after Rove when he fucked with them. Shrub threw Libby under the bus to save his favorite minion but even the Bushies backed down when the intelligence agencies got pissed at them. Up to that point they had been getting away with murder, and torture, and, and, and…
The Twiters’s CABAL does not have the discipline of the Bush Crime Family. They don’t have a history of trading favors with anyone who matters. The Twitlers’s Savonarola moment is coming sooner than we think, IMO. After all, this guy is truly an outsider where most of The Village is concerned. He’s just a dirty little smelly crank who conveniently has gotten the masses riled up so the power grab can continue during the chaos. The CIA isn’t going to put their asses in the line of fire to protect anyone who is making their job harder and more dangerous. This release isn’t just about threatening Twitler. It’s to demonstrate that they aren’t afraid to release info. period. Whatever they have on Twitler is irrelevant. Is Ryan and McConnell absolutely sure their closets are clean? Pence? Sessions? But there’s a larger picture here than your supremely narrow obsession with taking down the CIA and NSA a notch or four. We had two choices, practically speaking, last fall. And Hillary – with all her flaws – was by far the better choice over the looming disaster of the Trump presidency.
Glenn Greenwald, leader of the left-wing lemming purity brigade.

@Humboldtblue:
They don’t give a shit about PR? how dense are you or did you sleep through the PR disaster that was their attempt to undo the ethics committee? Assuming you are awake now I’ll explain it to you. The GOP thought they could simply end the oversight group that had some teeth & go back to what they had before the Dem held power. People, many of the same morans that voted for Trump screamed bloody murder and guess what? The GOP suddenly decided they would not end the committee. Does that sound familiar or do you need to put done the humbolt blue until your short-term memory improves?
This is the real fight right now & one we could win. Standing around DC on the 20th is all pretty and nice but it is not going to set fire to the Trump faction. THIS COULD.

To use the intelligence jargon of the past, as an asset Trump is blown. Any actions he takes seen as benefiting Russia and Putin will cause even huger political outcries and also widen what could be dangerous (for them) splits within the Republican Party. At some point, maybe sooner than we think, it’s going to be in Putin’s interest to cut Trump loose. And he’s got the information to use for a knife, too.

For the investment of a few billion, Putin gains nominal control of a first class military and the world’s most powerful economy.
Hell, Deadbeat Donnie continues compromising by his fevered denials. Kompromat works on so many levels – suppose Putin decides that Twitler is on such a short leash now that he’s of little use. If he truly wants to shatter the American polity, he lets him lie with impunity, and at the stroke of noon EST on 1/20 releases audio and video. The country would be incredibly weakened, and I’d argue, ripe for a palace coup led by the military, likely Mattis.

Ditto for Philip Hansen. And Putin thinks we’re weak because we didn’t shoot them in the head. He is fundamentally a bad guy. You might accommodate him if it’s in your best interest, and it’s rarely in anyone’s interest to actively make enemies, but beyond that, we have nothing in common with him.

Reading through the dossier over at BuzzFeed, some stuff towards the end struck me: the assessment read that the reason the Trump campaign welcomed Russia’s interference in all this was 1. because it would damage Hillary, but primarily 2., to distract the media and the public from the fact that where Trump is *really* compromised is in China and certain other emerging economies where he’s done some seriously shady stuff. But being close to China was seen as more of a liability, so they figured that getting everyone worked up over Russia, where Trump *wishes* he could do a lot of business, but really hasn’t, would do the trick.
China has seemed at times awful sanguine about Trump’s rhetoric and shenanigans. Maybe there’s a reason for that.

@JMG: That’s an important point. As you say, Trump is only useful to Putin if he has the power to alter US policy in ways that are favorable to Russia. Just a couple of days ago, Conway implied Trump and the Republicans will kill any further investigation into the hacks and roll back the sanctions Obama recently imposed.
Certainly Trump and his people are shameless enough to pursue that policy even after this scandal, but will the Republicans in congress find it in their political interest to support that strategy? I don’t question their patriotism — they have none. But they understand how intel orgs and foreign intrigue work better than Trump does.
Maybe the Tillerson hearings will provide some clues on how firmly elected Republicans are clinging to Trump’s bandwagon. They’ll probably know the wheels are coming off before he does.
PaulW
@Aleta:
I don’t think Obama’s speech was upstaged.
Obama’s speech gave us a clear contrast between what we’re losing with him out the door – a graceful, thoughtful, intelligence, classy world leader as role model – and what we’re getting with Trump – a vulgar, sexist, unthinking, conniving, vengeful business failure with the worst taste in foreign business partners.

Every day somebody tells us that horrible thing X exists solely to distract us from horrible thing Y. How are we supposed to agree on which is the one true outrage worthy of our time when there are 17 per day?

@Kay: I can believe it. They aren’t terribly smart and they are where they are based on slogans and maybe for some of them good looks. They are like a lot of performers with a well-worn act — once it wears out there is nothing to fall back on. Think about all those rock bands still touring with the very same set of songs after 30 years. They aren’t earning a living for their musicianship. The only thing you can hope for here is that their venues get smaller and smaller with time as the audience gets tired of them or dies.

Maybe, just maybe, our institutions all failed when faced with Trump because they were weak and packed with second rate hacks. I’ve not looked at the Buzzfeed stuff, but this could have “fake Karl Rove stuff” all over it.
Also, I am not comfortable with going after Trump for his sexual proclivities. People are entitled to a private life. If his involved partners were known to be underage or coerced, that could be a different.
Thinking more on this: all the laughing is a real chance to point out that libtards are hypocrites. Because we would be defending someone else for consensual private behavior. (That’s not too skeevy. I am proud that Democrats deserted Anthony Weiner.)
It’s safer to stick with going after the money trail. It has got to be there. The comment upthread by one of the lesser Trumps about the money stream coming from Russia.
Issue here is a president-elect susceptible to foreign blackmail and advantage-taking.
I think the press passed on this because it was not proveable, and they are cowards. They had an easier target to bully — EMAILS!
Their publishers and owners learned well that Trump will sue for anything. The press saw the Dan Rather kerning episode.
They could have let it slip that Trump was susceptible to foreign blackmail. Instead, they made it out that the Clinton Foundation was a big grift operation. Too much of the press are cowards, with a few exceptions, and not that bright or good.

For the folks thinking that this is only about Trump’s sexual fetishes:
– The memos claim that Trump and his team knew about the DNC hacking from the beginning.
– The memos claim that the Trump Camp paid for the hacking.
– The memos claim that Trump (through an intermediary) agreed to lift sanctions on Russia in return for a 19% stake in a Russian company.
– The memos claim that the Trump Camp came up with a contingency plan to hide the hackers in case Clinton won.
The golden showers thing is just a punchline, but there’s no way Trump can take the inauguration oath without perjuring himself. If only a fraction of the things in the memos are true than we’re talking about actual treason here.

Yes, I said that. A further takeaway from that observation is that it isn’t necessary for us to reach but a very modest portion of Trump voters to see the light and switch teams – flipping as few as 5% of Trump voters would cause a profound shift in presidential electoral dynamics, because flipping a voter creates a net change of 2 votes (one less from one side, one more for the other), whereas turning out a less motivated would-be supporter only adds one to your total. IN OTHER WORDS, even if 90% of those who voted for Trump are hopelessly unpersuadable (I think it’s more like 50-70%) – we have plenty of persuadable material to work with.

Anyone who gives a damn–about America, about democracy, about democracy in America–will continue to use the opportunities presented to us to belittle Trump and his minions. We need to focus on the fact that 2.9 million more people voted for Clinton and finding ways of building on that lead next time and overcoming the quirky electoral college.
At this point, whiners and defeatists serve no purpose.
