The TIME cover should be "Person of the Shittiest Year since 1968."
— Schooley (@Rschooley) December 7, 2016
But you can’t say Time‘s choice is “not normal” — the magazine has always had a predilection for showy authoritarians…
…Vladimir Putin, "You," Bono & the Gates', George W. Bush (twice), Rudy Giuliani, and that's all in THIS century. Please, TIME. Enough!
— Al Giordano (@AlGiordano) December 5, 2016
In the last century TIME has also picked Newt Gingrich, Ayatullah Khomeini, King Faisal, Henry Kissinger, Nixon, Stalin (twice), Hitler…

The Time Magazine list of the 100 Most Influential People is a joke and stunt of a magazine that will, like Newsweek, soon be dead. Bad list!

I told you @TIME Magazine would never pick me as person of the year despite being the big favorite They picked person who is ruining Germany

George Washington to Donald Trump. WTF, America.

Person of the Year is NOT an award for excellence. It’s for “impact” for good or ill. Trump qualifies. So did Hitler and Stalin.
If Clinton had won, she’d be on the cover.
In fairness, James Comey should have been a co-recipient.
If December 7, 1941, and November 8, 2016, are dates that will live in infamy, then Comey’s is a name that should do the same.
Cermet
The unelected, but selected dump is on the cover of a magazine that feature Hitler, and Stalin …a rather over reach here yet again. The dump is a lot of things but hardly a ‘person of the year’; surely a massive dump onto amerika but hardily anyone of influence. He is a suck up, attention craving fool but not someone of with a spine or even an IQ a little below average, at best.
Kathleen
Good Morning, rikyrah and everyone! Have whatever kind of day you feel like having!

@Kathleen:
I’d LIKE to have a Trump-free day. Completely, not just one where I don’t hear about him, but one where he is GONE. Sigh. You can’t always get what you want…

Trump must be so pleased. At least Time magazine won’t be harassed by Trump thugs. That’s good I guess.

extra! extra! read all about it! I have the cutest cats ever!

We fucked up real bad here, not getting Clinton over the finish line.

Well, to the victor goes the magazine covers. What the Democratic Party needs now (immediately) is a leader in opposition (our own magazine cover person) who can be a voice not only attacking GOP/Trump actions as they are unveiled, but also act has a force to be able to pull certain elements of Trump voters away from the herd.
Right now, the collection of cats that is the Democratic leadership (not sure how wise that word is) is going to be unable to do the specific work that needs to be done at this moment. It seems to me that the Democratic Leadership has the unenviable task of trying to accomplish two different goals at the same time period.
First is maintaining and increasing the so-called Obama coalition since they are in essence the heart the party at this point. But also, the party must understand that the electoral map has been changed by Donald Trump and those changes will be further installed and strengthened by actions taken by the GOP in subsequent years. That means that in order to be successful in upcoming elections in important parts of the country, the Democratic Party must win more white votes. To fail to plan and to execute for this goal would be electoral suicide.
I get that some would find it this idea distasteful, but that’s where we are and part of successful politics is being able to balance all those good motives and actions with distasteful actions in order to gain ground to achieve greater goods.
For several years now, I have been concerned about an ideological bubble that seemed to encapsulate many on the left.
In one of its more pernicious forms this bubble has seemed to lay lead folks to the conclusion that, “Our ideas are simply better and more intellectually powerful than yours therefore all we have to do is point this out and all the people of good will follow our lead while the great unwashed imbeciles will simply fall away cowering from the rightness of our arguments.” I’m not sure there’s ever been a point when politics worked like that. And this type of bubble induced blindness is one of the several reasons we are in this shitstorm of a situation.
rikyrah
@Kathleen:
Morning??
magurakurin
@Keith G: Yes and no. The real reason we’re fucked is the electoral system is completely unfair. But I agree people won’t be won over simply because are ideas are better. And they are, but as you say it isn’t enough. We shouldn’t abandon those ideas though. At present, I think the person who will emerge as the leader here will be the outgoing president. He is being silent now, but I don’t think that Obama, a community organizer at heart, is going to go quietly into the night. And I also don’t see any reason why a private citizen can’t be a strong and effective political leader. Who knows, maybe he will put himself back in the Senate or maybe even the House? Not saying that’s what’s going to happen, just that he’s going to do something and that something will be significant. This shit is just getting started now. We lost the election…double plus ungood no doubt. We should have fought harder and won, but we didn’t. However, we are all still here and unless the Shitgibbon truly goes full metal jacket dictator (he might) he will be in for some surprises himself.

You have to give Time credit for photo selection, though. I can’t think of another image that would match this one for sheer malevolence.
Mai.naem.mobile
@magurakurin: I think that depends. If he screws up and has a bad presidency with bad stuff happening due to his incompetence or he gets impeached due to corruption,I think the family is done. I find it difficult to believe that neither will happen based on the transition. Some of it is flooding the zone but a lot of it just a shitshow. Also, you need to remember that if it’s a bad presidency the GOP will want to scapegoat him personally
,so that the party doesn’t get the blame.
magurakurin
@Mai.naem.mobile: from your lips to God’s hears. I so want you to be right. We’ll see soon enough. Another month or so and the shit show starts for reals. I picked a bad year to quit sniffing glue.
Keith G
@magurakurin: There are no ideals I wish to abandon. There are ways to communicate and even temporarily prioritize actions that allow for easier communication with groups whose votes are needed. I think we need to remove ourselves from an either/or dialectic. The Democrats will soon enough be given unparalleled opportunities as lower-income Americans and many middle income Americans suffer from the plans the GOP are anxious to uncork. The Democrats must prepare to capitalize on what is to come.

I find it hard to imagine that piece made it on the show. I wonder if “pussy” and “damn” got bleeped, they were pretty heavy handed with the bleeper back in the day.
Carson was the master of reaction, whether real or acting he handled that perfectly & got many more laughs out of it than it would have if he didn’t milk it perfectly.

The truly awful part is that with all the bullshit, ALL the Clintons are neutered. They can’t afford to talk out as the principled opposition, as Sessions will see to multiple prosecutions.
I’d argue that all they may even need to consider taking a home elsewhere, like France (so long as LePen isn’t elected).

Apparently the Michigan recount, such as it was, has forced officials to reveal that the a high percentage of the voting machines on Detroit weren’t working. The margin was 10,000 votes. Just one machine showed a 50 vote total with 300 ballots inside.
This election was rigged. Believe me.
raven
You poisoned my sweet water.
You cut down my green trees.
The food you fed my children
Was the cause of their disease.
My world is slowly fallin’ down
And the airs not good to breathe.
And those of us who care enough,
We have to do something…….
Oh…….oh What you gonna do about me?
Oh…….oh What you gonna do about me?
Your newspapers,
They just put you on.
They never tell you
The whole story.
They just put your
Young ideas down.
I was wonderin’ could this be the end
Of your pride and glory?
Oh…….oh What you gonna do about me?
Oh…….oh What you gonna do about me?
I work in your factory.
I study in your schools.
I fill your penitentiaries.
And your military too!
And I feel the future trembling,
As the word is passed around.
“If you stand up for what you do believe,
Be prepared to be shot down.”
Oh…….oh What you gonna do about me?
Oh…….oh What you gonna do about me?
And I feel like a stranger
In the land where I was born
And I live like an outlaw.
An’ I’m always on the run……………………..
An I’m always getting busted
And I got to take a stand……..
I believe the revolution
Must be mighty close at hand…………………..
Oh…….oh What you gonna do about me?
Oh…….oh What you gonna do about me?
I smoke marijuana
But I can’t get behind your wars.
And most of what I do believe
Is against most of your laws
I’m a fugitive from injustice
But I’m goin’ to be free.
Cause your rules and regulations
They don’t do the thing for me
Oh…….oh What you gonna do about me?
Oh…….oh What you gonna do about me?
And I feel like a stranger
In the land where I was born
And I live just like an outlaw.
An’ I’m always on the run.

A discussion this week on a local blog I follow is the discrepancy between rural/small town and urban America and doing what we can to improve our communities and values. One commenter said we should probably not expect our favorite political philosophies to win once and for all. We should let go of that fantasy and start finding common ground.
A dumbass regular commenter replied that “common ground is a terrible goal. No way, we won!” He’s a hopeless moron but these crowing “we won” idiots make me want some snappy comebacks to respond with even if it’s an exercise in futility. Guess I just would like to let off some steam once in awhile.
Helen
Last night on RTE (Irish) news the newscaster announced this and then said “Trump said he is honored by the pick.” She then started to laugh. Cuz Trump is too stupid to know it’s not necessarily an honor. They then showed the two Time meltdown covers and the newscaster lost her shit laughing.
It was glorious.

TIME got it wrong. Trump is not “President of the United States”. Barack Obama is. It’s still 2016, a year that will suck in infamy
Stupid, fundamental error that says a lot.

And Donald Trump is on the cover of Time, therefore Donald Trump is serious (which in his infinite narcissism he reinforces with that scowling pose). Well, yes, he’s as serious as a stroke, all right, but not for any of the reasons the editors of Time may ascribe to him.
And on the subject of “seriousness”, does anyone still take Time magazine seriously? I don’t even look at the six-month old copies in the doctor’s office anymore.
