Good doggie.

Aw, at first thought you might be linking to Jessica.

He is cute, love his coat. What breed is this? I don’t recognize it.

Grateful thanks, BTW, for a non-orange-tinted thread.

WaPo says that the Carrier jobs (1,000) will remain in US due to Trump deal. Question – will we ever know the details of the deal? Carrier is a private company so probably won’t.

@schrodinger’s cat:
He’s an Australian Red Cattle Dog (also known as a Red Heeler, from, I suspect, their habit of nipping the heels of the cattle). He’s a good boy, if a little bonkers, and his ears are soft like velvet.
schrodinger's cat
@SenyorDave: Look at the SEC filings for the last two years and this year.
schrodinger's cat
@Sarah, Proud and Tall: He is floofy, reminds me of Tunch.
Schlemazel
@schrodinger’s cat:
Private company, no SEC filings. Maybe something will show up in the state financial records but who knows?
Baud
@schrodinger’s cat: Why would a private company have SEC filings?
Schlemazel
@Sarah, Proud and Tall:
Cattle dog? Probably is desperate for work to do. Keeping a working dog as a pet is tough because they can go bonkers from being bored.
He is a cutie though

@Baud: @Schlemazel: Sorry I misread Senyor Dave’s comment. I thought it was publicly traded.

Somebody in the last thread said by law it would have to be in the state of Indiana’s financial statements. Interested to see what the WSJ says about this. According to them, the auto bailout was the worst thing ever, and that was 500k – 1 million jobs, especially when you added in auto parts dealers and supply chain. But that was the Kenyan, Muslim communist who was largely responsible (I believe Bush was involved, to be fair).
MomSense
@Sarah, Proud and Tall:
Just found out that my dog is part Australian cattle dog. Maybe that explains her bonkers part.
I have a musical confession. I cannot stand Joe Bonamassa’s playing. Everyone says he’s sooo good but I can’t even get through one song without wanting to pull a Van Gogh.
Schlemazel
@schrodinger’s cat:
NP. I had to look them up myself
HERE IS A THOUGHT: What if the deal is that all Trump buildings will have Carrier HVAC? Maybe a bunch of Federal buildings too? Bribery that would be impossible to pin on them
Baud
@Schlemazel: I doubt Trump would spend his own money to make a deal like this.
Schlemazel
@MomSense:
Apparently he is a big deal but we should form a club. Not Bona and I want no massa of it
Sarah, Proud and Tall
@Schlemazel:
He’s a bit old now, so his favourite activity is sleeping. Two walks a day and a bit of ball play and he’s happy. Which you would be, frankly.

I spent all day writing a presentation that isn’t going to be done in time. (I volunteered after yesterday’s all-day meeting to give my grad specialization’s take on the topic.) It’s internal so I’ll only embarrass myself in front of my boss though.

@SenyorDave: CNBCs David Faber(about the only non wingnut on CNBC and pretty decent reporter) said it involved state incentives – I am guessing they got some of that sweet sweet big gubmint money. Now if some blackity blackity black Muslin Kenyan president asked for this it would be for his blackity blackity black Saudi Iranian Iraqi business cronies asking for reparations for slavery. Also if it was a low income blackity blackity black high SAT scoring straight A engineering major college student asking for a student loan,it would be an entitlement and he would be told to bootstrap his blackity black ass.
Schlemazel
@Baud:
Good point but maybe he has an angle there too
Sarah, Proud and Tall
@MomSense:
They’re very loyal to their family, and highly protective of them from everyone else, and have a bit of a tendency to bite things moving away from them, like people’s bums and kiddies.
ETA: The other most noticeable cattle dog trait I’ve seen is cooling down their front paw or paws every time they have a drink. It’s a bit adorable, until they get really hot in which case the water goes flying everywhere and they demand more.
Baud
@Mai.naem.mobile: It’s kind of funny that Trump will be taking credit for something Indiana taxpayers did. But I’m sure they won’t mind. He hates who they hate.
Mai.naem.mobile
@SenyorDave: you forgot black. Black Muslin Kenyan.
Baud
@Schlemazel: I said in the other thread I’m not going to drive myself crazy with speculation.
States give businesses tax incentives all the time. I don’t see why this deal is all that different except for the fact that it’s caught up in Trump’s rhetoric.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
I don’t know the details of the deal, bu tI’ll throw this out there again
MomSense
@Schlemazel:
Oh thank you for saying that. When people find out my kid is a musician they always mention him or send me video links and dear dog they are terrible.

@Sarah, Proud and Tall:

We also have border collie, lab, and German shepherd in the mix. She’s a lot of dog in one little body.

@SenyorDave: I read, can’t remember where, that they have a ton of defense contracts. It has threatened to pull that business. So basically blackmail via violation of Pentagon procurement processes. Autocracy works!

Iggy Azalea bought a painting from one of my Aussie friends!
Pop princess Iggy Azalea has been getting a bit of a bad press lately for turning her back on Australia for life in the US, but the singer and rapper from Mullumbimby has been supportive of a couple of local artists during her time here as a judge on The X Factor. Last week Azalea turned up at M Contemporary Gallery in Sydney and bought a couple of works by local artists, photographer Simone Rosenbauer’s Like Ice in the Sunshine #31 and emerging artist Jodi Clark’s painting Tigress, Portrait of a Lady (unfinished). And she looked pretty pleased about her acquisitions, as you can see here.

This whole Carrier thing is straight out of Putin’s playbook.
Socialize costs of business, privatize profits. Welcome to the new capitalism.
Baud
@Dog Dawg Damn: Um…that’s been the GOP MO since well before Putin.
Dog Dawg Damn
@Baud: Right. Now it’ll just be pared with the need to reward players & states that are pro-Trump (if not Trump-related in reality).

@MomSense:
Crikey. That sounds like an adorable doggie.

I made my third small donation to Foster Campbell today. He has raised $2.5 million, mostly from out-of-state Democrats, since November 8. It’s a long shot but makes me feel like I’m doing something.

@Sarah, Proud and Tall: One of my favorite dog friends was a blue heeler. I walked him and dog-sat for him. They found him as a stray puppy on a relative’s farm in Washington state one summer. They put up notices but no one responded so they took him home to California.
The next summer they went back up to the farm and discovered that the pup had belonged to an Hispanic family in the area who hadn’t seen the notices. The man had taken the pup out to the fields with the other dogs, and at some point the pup fell off the truck. The man’s wife was furious with him and they were both worried. They were happy he was safe and loved, and since they’d planned to sell him anyway, my friends were happy to pay them.
And he lived happily ever after, honest. He enjoyed long hikes and runs. He was wary of other dogs, but he wasn’t aggressive. His original owners had docked his tail, which I guess is or used to be customary, but I’ll bet it would have been a beautiful tail. Gosh, he was a good boy.
Hi, Elizabelle!

When I need peace from the doom and gloom pervading most of the threads here. I turn to abhangas written in Marathi written about 700 years ago preaching universal brotherhood and that we are all equal in the eyes of the creator and other such universal themes.
Avagha Rang Ek Zaala (All colors became one) written by a saint poet, Soyrabai (who was an untouchable) in 14th century Maharashtra, sung by the great Kishori Amonkar.

@MomSense: Had a dog who we thought might have been part golden (or toller?) and part collie. Whenever we swam, the one side couldn’t stay out of the water, but the other side appeared to dislike every minute in it.
Aleta
@schrodinger’s cat: Here’s mine:
When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

For those wondering why no mental health professionals have gone on the record to diagnose Trump with anything: it would be a breach of medical ethics, known as the Goldwater Rule (yes, named after Barry).

I have been looking at beautiful things on Pinterest and other places. I love this artist from Spain I came across: Elena Nuez, especially her leaves painted with abstract patterns. They make me feel happy.

So I looked it up and The Mighty Trowel and I will have to wait until December 26th for another deathmatch over cultural appropriation since that’s when Moana opens in Oz.
Artists vs anthropologists always gets a little ugly, but for context, I’ve been using this article and similar ones to help guide me about writing characters from other cultures in a respectful way.

I just go between feeling really angry or depressed. It took us till the last couple of years to dig out of 2007 and we’ve been working diligently,being tight with money etc and all that for this dickhead to get elected. My dad was w/o insurance after the Bush Sr recession and then was uninsurable until medicare because of pre existing shit and I sincerely believe he died prematurely because of limited healthcare that he paid out of pocket during that period. Fucking Tom Price can shove it up his ass. He’s messing with people’s lives. Fucking sociopaths. Fucking GOP. I wouldn’t be surprised if my dad paid more in federal taxes than Trumpig has. Anyhow, we have to redo all our plans to get the fuck out of here. If I am going to live in a banana republic I might as well find someplace where my money will go further.

I started Thanksgiving with a stomach virus (started Tuesday night, lasted for 3 days, including a 7 hour TG-day drive). I also managed to sprain/break a toe somehow, so I was limping the whole time. For the ride back, I got pinkeye and now a sinus infection. Interestingly enough, the last time I took this trip (in May) I had one malady after another as well (3 ER visits in 6 weeks). I already have a weak immune system (not HIV), so I’m wondering if I’ve finally hit that age/health point where long trips break my body down. Any body else get sick/injured on road trips? (and not just contagious stuff…I had a hip sprain, a staph infection, sinus infection, pinkeye, broken toe and maybe a few other things I’m forgetting). No wonder so many old people seem glad to go…this constant weakened state is no fun.
Omnes Omnibus
@Keith P.: I come from a “Fuck you world. You can’t beat me.” school. I encourage that POV. Fight until it is your choice not to. I will respect your decision.

A holiday tip for those in the LA area. A few years ago, I saw a show called The MeshugaNutcracker in San Jose. It was a very funny twist on the usual Christmas pageant about a village in Poland celebrating Hanukkah. It’s being performed at the American Jewish University in Los Angeles from December 17 through January 1. I have no connection with the production, I just like to support live theater.
Major Major Major Major
@Omnes Omnibus: No, you didn’t. I was just making sure we were on the same page about cartoons.
ETA: I didn’t think you were trying to cause a fight.
Larkspur
@Keith P.: That’s awful! Here’s hoping you rebound quickly. I haven’t done any long trips in recent years, so I can’t comment on travel stress. But at the market today, I was paying in cash and had to struggle to identify dimes from pennies and nickels from quarters because my trifocals don’t help me much. I said to the clerk “It’s weird getting old”. He laughed and said his 94 year old mother-in-law says that “getting old is not for sissies”. Obviously that’s not the first time I’ve heard that, but it made me laugh anyway. The thing is, always, none of us has ever been this old before.
So next holiday, make them drive seven hours to see you. Unless that’s even more stressful.
Truly, though, best wishes.

@Keith P.: I got miserably sick last year after each of the three trips I took on Southwest. Cut it back to two this year, showered IMMEDIATELY after I arrived at each final destination, stood firm against too many plans, and made it through unscathed. Coincidence? Who knows?
