On the Road is a weekday feature spotlighting reader photo submissions.
From the exotic to the familiar, whether you’re traveling or in your own backyard, we would love to see the world through your eyes.
Here are a couple great pics sent in by readers in response to my request a week ago.
A view of Kicker Rock through Darwin’s Window, on San Cristobal Island, Galapagos, by valued commenter Albatrossity.
From the North America series, by Steve Jenks.
If you want to participate, email me a link to a couple of your favorite pics on a photo site like Flickr (do not send the image itself please) and I will put them up in open threads. Send a short caption if you want and let me know how you want to be identified. If your computer cannot read our email links at top right, my email is (remove the zeroes): portus0jackson0ii at yahoo dot com.

Wow, gorgeous photos!

@NotMax:
Maybe if we keep spelling “inauguration” wrong it won’t happen.

Beautiful! Thanks for this, Tim. I’ll send you a couple pictures when I get in front of a big-boy computer ?

@NotMax: Thanks, I fixed it.
hovercraft
Gorgeous pictures.
@NotMax:
This is a term from the BJ lexicon, meaning we don’t have to recognize any events occurring January 20, 2017.
ETA: He fixed it :-(

@hovercraft:

2017 Balloon Juice Pet Calendar Alert
This post reminds me: Friday is the deadline to submit your pictures for the 2017 pet calendar. Original post here, including e-mail address.
Roger Moore
I just finished a trip to Utah with much photo taking. A couple of my favorites from the trip:
The Ghost (from The Great Gallery)
Yellow Rock
Barbara
Those are both beautiful, but I am a sucker for the textures and contrast of black and white photography, and that second image is just a stunning example.
Barbara
@Roger Moore: Of all the things I have seen in my life, it’s the most ancient images that have really stuck with me. We toured the cave at Les Eyzies in France more than 20 years ago, and the polychrome images of animals that were made more than 15,000 years ago give a certain kind of perspective on life.
Gin & Tonic
Here’s one I like. Death Valley fauna, July, 2016.
I’m still trying to figure out this Flickr thing. Want to post photos without identifiable meatspace info, and send somehow just one link to one photo, the way raven does, without exposing the whole “photostream” or “camera roll” or whatever.
Steeplejack
@Barbara:
I highly recommend Werner Herzog’s documentary Cave of Forgotten Dreams, which was discussed here within the last week or so.

@Gin & Tonic:
That’s not all. I can’t see the picture because Yahoo! wants me to sign in. WTF?
Gin & Tonic
@Steeplejack: Odd. I’ve signed out of all Yahoo and Google accounts right now and can see the photo if I click on that URL.
Emma
Wonderful stuff. I’ve always wanted to visit the Galapagos. And I have to see more of that North America series!

@Gin & Tonic:
Just tried again—no luck. Maybe it’s going off a cookie stored on your system.
Gin & Tonic
@Steeplejack: Thanks. Going to have to figure this out.
jenn
Fantastic, thank you!
Gin & Tonic
@Steeplejack: Wonder if this one is any different? Lower Maligne Canyon. The privacy settings on the photo are different.
Roger Moore
@Gin & Tonic:
I get a 404 error.
Gin & Tonic
@Roger Moore: On which one?

@Gin & Tonic: i think what you want to do is:
click on the pic in flickr you want to share. that will take you to a page which has only that one pic.
on that page, click on the “right turn arrow,” which is the share icon.
that will bring up another display, which will have a list of options including “BBCODE.” click on BBCODE.
after you click BBCODE, there will be a really long link displayed on the page, below where it says BBCODE. this is where it gets a little tricky, but not so bad. highlight that really long link and copy it using Control-C.
now paste that really long link somewhere. for example into a blank word document or a new blank email – i just usually open a new email, and then hit control-V to paste the link into the email body.
now you can see that really long link in the email (or word doc or whatever). the really long “link” is actually made up of a few different links. copy the link that ends in .jpg. it starts with https: and ends with .jpg. that is a direct link to the image, without linking to your flickr page and showing your identity.
one thing i’m not sure of is if you need to change the privacy setting on the pic for it to be publicly viewable. probably. but after you set that, you can still grab the direct link from the BBCODE.
there may be an easier way to do this, but this is what i usually do, lol.
here’s one of mine, a photo of the chocolate hills in the philippines:

Roger Moore
@Gin & Tonic:
The first one.
Gin & Tonic
@Roger Moore: How about the second?
Gin & Tonic
@lurker dean: Thanks. I was using the URL that you get from choosing “Email” on that Share page, but was looking at some of the others as well. So here’s another try, State Route 190, CA.
lurker dean
@Gin & Tonic: that worked – nice pic!
Gin & Tonic
@lurker dean: Thanks. That’s exactly the linky method I was looking for.
opiejeanne
@Gin & Tonic: I don’t use such a long method when I post a link from flickr, but I do start with the right turn arrow; I use the http address, then use the linking process above the comment box. I don’t see any links to where I am at a given moment, but I may have turned off all of the location stuff because it’s not even showing where this was taken or it might have been an old camera lacking that info:
New Mexico Blue Gate
Darrin Ziliak (formerly glocksman)
Be sure to edit EXIF or other metadata if you send phone or camera pics and have the device set to record location and other identifying information that you wouldn’t be comfortable sharing with the whole wide intertubes.
Me? I don’t care if everyone digs into my pics and sees that they were taken with an LGE Nexus 5 or a Nikon Coolpix P530. :D
