I posted a link to this last night, but thought we could all use some cute today, so posting it here. Seriously, these guys help me cope. I’ve gotten us back into a morning walk routine. I have been so busy with work and house stuff, I hadn’t been walking Bixby with regularity for the last couple of months. Then Bailey arrived and I had to ease us into our group walks. They are doing great with it. If you’re doing the math, it’s 260 lbs of muscle…
I want to post a pre-holiday recipe thread on Friday, again trying to get back to routines. Anyone need something specific? I’m thinking it will be about side dishes. I can direct you to a bunch of good turkey recipes and desserts, too. Let me know in the comments.
Otherwise, open thread. I’m about to get into today’s work and wait for my door guy to come install my pretty door. What’s on your mid-day agenda?
The Moar You Know
My pup leaves very little time to worry about anything but my pup. Turns out that’s been a good thing lately.

two cute. My Mom’s 60 lb of muscle bassett hound took her for a walk several times a day.

Great photo! I really appreciate the efforts of the front-pagers here over the past week. Lots of posts, lots of non-political posts, offering both balm for the catatonically heartsick and inspiration for those ready to roll up their sleeves (even farther) and get to work (even harder). Afraid I’m still in the first category.

Sides are my vote. That’s always my contribution to the dinner. I have one dish I’m making with yams, bacon and maple syrup, but I could use a new take on boring old beans, peas or corn.
TaMara (HFG)
@JPL: Well I guess I did say open thread. But I thought we might make it more than three comments before someone decided it couldn’t be a cheerful thread. Sigh
TaMara (HFG)
@geg6: I have some really good unusual sides, so I’ll go through the archives and see what’s not your standard stuff.
catclub
I bet there is 20 pounds of bone, skin, hair, and gristle, so only 240 pounds of muscle. Exaggerator. ;)

@TaMara (HFG): Chestnut stuffing. You value it so much more if you have burned your fingertips peeling the red-hot nuts. I have heard that sybarites buy their chestnuts peeled.
JPL
@TaMara (HFG): I’m sorry, but I do think that is good news. It looks like justice will be served. I’ll behave.
TaMara (HFG)
@JPL: No, it’s ok, it is very good news. I’m just a raw nerve. Like everyone else.
PhoenixRising
What tack do you use to walk that many pounds of dog?
The equestrian term seems most appropriate. And yes, I’m asking because we may bring on our giant dog’s replacement while she’s still staggering around like Fred Sanford, which is now a daily occurrence.
LAO
@The Moar You Know: I totally agree. Last night, we had our second puppy class — the first being election night. The difference in the level of enthusiasm among the humans was noticeable. The puppies, not so much!
JPL
The past few years, I have been buying a few sides, from a local restaurant that grows a lot of their own vegetables.
They also make a great cornbread stuffing.
JPL
@LAO: How’s the pup doing on potty training?
Felonius Monk
@TaMara (HFG): That is actually some encouraging news about a bad situation. More upper than downer. At least it gives hope that justice might prevail.

Aw, the puppies cuddling is balm to a wounded spirit.
I’ll be spending TurkeyDay weekend with friends on the (Washington) coast. If you have something yummy with mushrooms, sausage, and noodles, please post that! I do have a recipe, but am open to trying something new.
WereBear
I’m coming to your house!
LAO
@JPL: She’s good — I’m still relying on wee wee pads at 7 months because the girl never signals me she has to go. But she has fully acclimated to NYC and enjoys both peeing and pooping on the streets. Now, if I could just get her to stop pooping under parked cars — which is very awkward in terms of clean up.
RoonieRoo
Thank you for the pic. I’m hoping for these types of threads whenever I check BJ. Exactly what I need. I’ve got one of my pup in his Halloween costume: Isaac I figure if I am demanding pet pics, I should also provide.

@PhoenixRising: I’d be curious to know what various people use for their dogs, too. I use what their owners tell me to, but I recently suggested a SENSE-ible harness see it here for a lively young Lab mix who pulls, and it works really well. I use it on some other big dogs as well. The leash attaches to a ring on the front of the chest, so the dog is gently pulled toward you, plus no choking.
JPL
@LAO: The vision of you trying to clean up under the car, made me laugh. That might not have been your intention, though.

One of our cats was in very playful mood last night and she loves to follow, run after us and grab a leg. This time she kept running after our big Sammy, grabbing her leg until Sammy turned around and gave kitty a look that said, “What the heck is up with you?”
LAO
@JPL: I say laugh — it’s better than crying.
The super funny thing about it is, I live 1/2 block from a police precinct so all the cars parked on my block are either marked or unmarked NYPD vehicles or the officers’ personal cars. AND she only poops under cars parked on that block! When she deigns to poop elsewhere, it’s never under a car.
Patricia Kayden
@TaMara (HFG): What breed of dog are those? The one in the back kind of looks like my Boxer.
TaMara (HFG)
@PhoenixRising: I use the Hamilton harness, leash and collar. Bixby also has a gentle leader because he forgets he can drag me like a rag doll – usually when greeting some new friend.
Are you going through Big Dogs, Huge Paws again? Bailey came from a local rescue, Big Bones. Nicest people.
TaMara (HFG)
@Patricia Kayden: Great Dane – Bixby is a European Black and Bailey is an American Mantle (sometimes known as a Boston)

NYTimes doing it’s job for a change or just a momentary lapse?

@PhoenixRising: We have two Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs and use Lupine No Pull Halters. As a draft breed you HAVE to use something other than a plain collar. The female (Dany) does well with a face halter called Perfect Pace, but the male, Hannibal, does not so we use the no pulls on them now. They can still pull, but they can’t pull you down. That’s about all you can hope for with young dogs (even when they’ve been through obedience classes).

I see you’ve already been teaching your puppy to stick it to The Man, or at least to make them step in her poops. ?

@catclub: actually, i buy them peeled. Arthritis in the hands…I’m still able to make most of my meals at home because our local Wegmans sells a lot of fresh ingredients pre-prepped for which I am grateful as I’m not an enormous fan of take out or restaurant food.

@GrandJury: Sorry, no. They helped precipitate this train wreck, now they’re just gleefully highlighting the casualties.
@LAO: So … don’t walk that particular block? (“Doctor, it hurts when I do this …”)
LAO
@Poopyman: well, it’s hard to avoid since I live on that block but I get your point. She loves the cops though since they are a very ending source of treats and pets. As a defense attorney, it pains me. ?

I’m looking for a dessert recipe to augment the standard pumpkin pie. Something fun and fallish. Will trade my grandma’s stuffing recipe, which has been and always will be my favorite Thanksgiving dish.

Looks like Bixby is protecting his little sister. Sweet.

We are fortunate in the Golden State and now that Kamala Harris has been elected Senator we have held up our end of the firewall in the vain hope of resisting the most odious overreach sure to come our way. Ya can’t beat having Senator Elizabeth Warren serve as tour guide as you start to settle into your new Senate office in Capitol Hill.
P.S. the pic is from Harris’s twitter account

FWIW, DiFi is an ass, but she’s not going to go along with what an anti-Semitic white supremacist asshole wants to do. She’ll say a lot of mealymouthed bullshit, so we need to stiffen her spine and call her office to remind her who her voters are.

“Bannon” of course goes without saying.

@jacy: Marlborough Pie.
What is Marlborough Pie?
Nobody expects the Marlborough Pie!

I made a pumpkin pie on Sunday. Forgot to put in any sugar. It was…different. My dogs seemed to enjoy it much more than my human family.
I claim I was just trying to accustom them to the austerity to come, but they believe otherwise.

I take it you’re referring to the English “mince pie“, my mother is the only one who likes them, she also loves fruitcake, which I also hate. The link leads to a BBC recipe I’m thinking of surprising her with this holiday. Apparently they freeze well so I could make them for Thanksgiving and Christmas since she’ll be the only one eating them. Give me a nice blueberry pie any day and I’m happy.
Humboldtblue
@Mnemosyne: I agree

@Steeplejack: I love mincemeat pie! Glad to see someone else at least knows what it is.

@hovercraft: I am aligned with your pie preferences. As my mother said, “Back in the day you couldn’t be too picky.”

@jacy:
Would you like my Sweet Potato Cheesecake recipe?
If so, let me know where (email) to send it to you and I’d be happy to share or to swap for your stuffing recipe. I need a good stuffing recipe – lost my great- grandma’s recipe during a move some years ago.
The cheesecake was my Grandma’s recipe – loosely based on the famous one served at Galatoire’s in New Orleans, but tweaked with a hint of fall spices and some extra sweetness in the topping that goes on the cheesecake. Yum!

@TaMara (HFG): Okay thanks. Wouldn’t have put them in the Great Dane family. I have a Boxer/Great Dane mix which is much smaller.

@CaseyL: Wow. Something new for Thanksgiving? My family has had the exact same menu every Thanksgiving for well over 100 years. A tad boring, but we never have food disasters because by now everyone has figured out how to prepare each dish.

@RoonieRoo: Love the picture of your sweet baby Isaac! I just found BJ and am thrilled with the mix. Now if someone could tell me how to get my 60 lb rescue dog with PTSD to go for a walk (more than 100 yards without getting scared)!
