This doesn’t feel like losing an election. This feels like the start of a war.
Jesse
I won’t.
the Conster, la Citoyenne
Markets are crashing. Need suggestions about what to do with my money. I’m 61.
James E Powell
I remember people saying this in 2000 and 2004. We got Bush & Iraq and all that came with it. And Bush gave us Roberts and Alito. And they gave us Shelby County. And it looks like that gave us Trump.
ArchTeryx
For some of us. Some of us have no choice but to leave or die if Trump wins. I’m one of them.
Sarah
It feels like the end of the world.
schrodinger's cat
This is not the country I thought it was.
sigaba
@the Conster, la Citoyenne: Gold.
Ohio Mom
Yes, life will go on. On a very diminished level for a lot of us. And that’s only until climate change really gets going….
Baud
I’m glad I have you guys.
Sister Rail Gun of Warm Humanitarianism
@Suzanne: Exactly.
Steppan
Instant repeal of the ACA and tens of thousands start die without health care. Withdraw from the Paris Accord and we probably lose any chance of stopping climate change before it’s too far to not be fatal. And that’s without talking about NATO and nukes…
redshirt
We’re going to lose NV too?
WTF is happening? How could so many be so wrong?
Suzanne
They called it for Penzone—Arpaio’s opponent.
redshirt
@the Conster, la Citoyenne: Cash in mattresses.
cynthia ackerman
Look at the map. Hillary is now surging and Drumph is running out of good mews. Still a fucked up next few years even if she pulls this off.
Tom Levenson
I hope so. The Canadian immigration site is down.
dmsilev
@schrodinger’s cat:
It really truly is frightening. He’s embraced open racism, open sexism, open religious bigotry, open ignorance, etc. And he’s winning.
the Conster, la Citoyenne
@redshirt:
Tomorrow, I’m going to the bank and cashing out Money market.
marv
@Sarah:
it really does
schrodinger's cat
It is sickening to see the return of Bernie bros back in the comment section dancing in the end zone.
TaMara (HFG)
This is not a country I want to live in. Even if Hillary should squeak out a win….this is not my country. I don’t know how else to put it.
albertZ
I am starting to lose hope but I have three daughters and need to find the strength. Where?
James E Powell
That’s Americans in a nutshell.
Viva BrisVegas
@Steppan:
Which of those is a problem for Republicans?
Origuy
@redshirt: Hardly any votes reported in Nevada and those are from the rural counties.
BBA
I want to say “don’t mourn, organize” but really what the FUCK do we have left? Aside from 2nd Amendment solutions, which I’m just a trifle afraid to deal with.
guachi
@schrodinger’s cat: Who are the Bernie bros?
I honestly forgot who they were it’s been so long.
Jesse
@schrodinger’s cat: YAAAY! EVERYONE IS FUCKED! HOORAY!
Steppan
@Viva BrisVegas:
This was in response to Doug saying we’ll get through this.
A lot of people might well not.
To reply to you, annihilated food supply chains don’t care about party affiliation.
dmsilev
@James E Powell: Apparently it is.
PeakVT
The royal we will muddle through.
Too many of us not-so-special snowflakes, who are poor despite working 60+ hrs a week – not so much.
Sister Rail Gun of Warm Humanitarianism
@the Conster, la Citoyenne: Ammo.
Rene
@schrodinger’s cat: i agree; if you wanted bernie instead of hillary,it didn’t happen and the reality right now is a looming disaster for all of us
all progressive legislation is going to go down the toilet and it will take decades to get it back so what’s to be happy about if you liked bernie?
Kryptik
So much for demographic shifts helping.
It feels like the white majority in this country just stood up and screamed ‘WE ARE AMERICA, YOU GET THE FUCK OUT’, in a far more unified voice than many of us could have ever imagined.
Kay
Well, there will still be courts. Some courts. If he allows them to stay open.
Doug!
We can have the presidency back in four years.
amygdala
@redshirt: Where are you looking at NV results? On CNN it’s only 1% of the vote in and not from Vegas and environs, which are the D strongholds.
amk
Now, I genuinely fear for the safety of Obamas’ and Clintons’. This batshit racist pos country that barely passes for a ‘democracy’ has proved to be totally insane.
redshirt
Obama has record approval ratings. He campaigned HARD for Clinton. And this is the result? I still have a hard time believing it as it’s happening.
Against a monster with no fund raising, no organization, no institutional support?
Kryptik
@Doug!:
You presume far too much.
MJS
Keep fighting? Not me. I’m done. This country has spoken loud and clear. The country founded by racists has pretty much come full circle. The country that sacrificed hundreds of thousands of its citizens to fight fascism has now elected a facist. Fight for what? There are lots of other good countries with truly good people. I’ll be checking those places out as soon as it’s practical to do so.
Sister Rail Gun of Warm Humanitarianism
@Doug!: You’re joking, right?
Steppan
@Doug!:
Depends what’s left to retake.
Fair Economist
With the Senate lost, I’m not even sure we want Hillary to win the Presidency. It would be poison, because the Republicans would block everything. But, the voters being what they are, she’d get blamed for everything. We’d be crushed in 2018 and 2020.
It’s a tough tradeoff against President Trump, to be fair.
redshirt
Well, Clinton now NEEDS to win MI, WI, PA, and NH to not lose.
Another Scott
@the Conster, la Citoyenne: Don’t do anything. You can’t time the market. Plus, if you get out, when will you get back in?
Hang in there.
Cheers,
Scott.
Gin & Tonic
@Doug!: With whom?
Viva BrisVegas
@Steppan:
That’s completely true, but it still doesn’t obscure the fact that it won’t cause the Republicans any political pain. In fact, the suffering of the right kind of people will probably gain them support.
Trump or his kin will never go hungry.
a hip hop artist from Idaho (fka Bella Q)
@TaMara (HFG): I hear you. I’m now understanding how Rs felt in 2012. But we had people who (we believed, based on all the empirical evidence) knew what the fuck they were talking about tell us this was gonna be okay. WTF.
I don’t want to live here anymore and I’m straight and white.
The Dangerman
@the Conster, la Citoyenne:
If I was in the market (I’m not, for lots of reasons), I’m holding, at the very least, and I’d be damned tempted to buy (selected stocks); the market always over reacts to bad news. The market will recover fairly quickly (maybe not days or weeks, but it won’t be THAT long).
redshirt
@amygdala: 538
sigaba
@PeakVT:
Speaking as a Californian, and considering Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin in light of my career in Hollywood, it’s okay.
I guess Republicans haven’t believed in the USA in some time, their votes and politicians seem to suggest this.
I believed in the USA, the country that exists, not some ideal in my mind. I don’t want to HOPE America is amazing, I want to know it is.
People like me, maybe they’re thinking, maybe I need to focus on California, or Los Angeles. Maybe the whole country, maybe it’s not so hot. Maybe I’M going to be pissed off about them getting my tax money, for the wall, or the war on whatever.
schrodinger's cat
@the Conster, la Citoyenne: @Another Scott: Seconded.
Kay
PA looks like it will hold. I’m oddly proud of Pittsburgh.
Mai.naem.mobile
@Suzanne: who cares? Trumpy will find some even bigger position in his administration for Arpaio. I’ve had a bad gut feeling about this election for a while but the polling was so good I ignored my own gut feeling.
Fair Economist
@Doug!:
If there are free and fair elections, we’ll win a landslide in 2020. That’s a big if with a Republican trifecta headed by Trump, though. See Turkey.
schrodinger's cat
@Mai.naem.mobile: Same here.
redshirt
Omnes, tell me good things about WI.
Jesse
@sigaba:
Me too.
MJS
@TaMara (HFG): It may not be a country you want to live in (neither do I) but it is most definitely America. Always has been, except for two days (the days Obama was elected) where a little decency showed through.
SiubhanDuinne
@Steppan:
Suddenly, being as old as I am doesn’t seem so terrible….
Just A. Guy
“A republic, if you can keep it.” Took 230 years, but we got our answer. We can’t keep it.
This is a catastrophe, not just for this country, but the world. Anyone who says otherwise is deluding themselves. You thought George W. Bush was bad, this is 100x worse. The next 4 years will be a nightmare.
Peale
@Fair Economist: I’m pretty depressed about it. We’ll still be here, but I think this particular iteration of the Democrats is done for awhile.
albertZ
Obama was one step forward. Trump is two steps back… But not a reason to give up. And yes I’m resigned to platitudes.
Mai.naem.mobile
You have to fucking be kidding me. Racist dickheads voted for this asshole who can’t control himself on Twitter. Seriously. This is the kind of moron you voted for. I need to move the fuck out of this country.
Rene
without any sarcasm involved, i just told my son he is lucky he is a white man cuz the rest of us are screwed
Kryptik
@MJS:
The problem is when America doesn’t want you to live in it. When a bracingly terrifying number of Americans scream ‘you don’t belong here and we’re gonna ensure you and everyone who looks like or believes like you is run out like the infestation you are’, it’s a message that’s hard to ignore.
Corner Stone
@Doug!: What the fuck are you fucking talking about?
Lurking Canadian
I’m watching on CBC. They’re not even trying to be impartial. The mood is HOLY SHIT WHAT THE FUCK IS HAPPENING???
Which is kind of how I feel.
PeakVT
@Fair Economist: We still want the presidency just to prevent much worse from happening. And 2018 was going to be a bad year anyway.
As for 2020, well, let’s not make the night more depressing, okay?
Elixir
Trumps lead in Michigan is down to 13,000. Don’t lose hope people.
Corner Stone
@Doug!: At least have the fucking decency to use a troll handle to post fucking bullshit like this you fucking POS.
amygdala
@redshirt: Looks like it’s flipping to blue now.
Olivia
I hope we will get through but I don’t know. Husband and I are retired and a few years ago we combined households with my daughter, her husband and kids because their jobs situation was so up and down. We all moved in together and we figured if we all pulled together, we could shore each other up through the rough patches. So far it has helped us through some tough times but I expect now our retirement investments will crash and if SS and Medicare get picked over by the Republicans husband and I are looking at going back to work.
Waldo
Best-case scenario under Trump: Picture a nationwide version of Kansas. With nukes.
Mr Stagger Lee
@MJS: And when those of us who will not bow down to those fascists, win this again, do us favor and don’t come back your spot will be reserved for a Syrian kid.
Corner Stone
@Rene: I just told my white male child the same thing. That we would be fine until we could figure out where to move to.
PaulWartenberg2016
If Trump wins we will not get through this.
The markets are already crashing. Do you think they’ll recover considering how they figure Trump’s anti-trade stances will lead to trade wars?
The racists and sexists will be emboldened by this: that for all the effort of getting the vote out among minorities and women it wasn’t enough to stop Trump. Attacks on women and Latinos and Blacks and Muslims are going to get WORSE.
Our jobs will suffer: nobody will do ANYTHING for wages with Trump and a GOP Congress.
Ryan’s budget plan will become law. Our social safety net gets destroyed. Our tax code gets gutted and toothless. Massive deficits and government debt will become the norm again.
The media won’t say shit because they’ll be too busy sucking up to a vengeful Trump and an arrogant self-satisfied Republican leadership.
Massive administrative incompetence will return. Take Katrina and multiply it by ten over the next four years.
Our voting rights will get shredded all to hell. The GOP will feel their voter suppression efforts are working and will push it EVERYWHERE. and on EVERYONE who’s not of their tribe.
Gods help us. We are too close to destruction here as a nation.
NoraLenderbee
There are people who voted for Obama who are now voting for Trump. WHAT????
a hip hop artist from Idaho (fka Bella Q)
@amygdala: So can you talk me down? * I’m trying to figure out if I’ve been delusional for the last 3 months. I might have a family funeral conflict with my Thursday shrink appt and I may have to skip the funeral.
I should clarify that I mean this figuratively/
sigaba
@Just A. Guy:
That’s the thing though, Republicans have been saying this blah for 8 years. There’s a consensus among all thoughtful people — it’s lost.
Kay
@Fair Economist:
It really is. Imagine the propaganda coming out of that White House. It will be surreal “100% employment, 4th quarter! We won another war!” They’re terrifying.
PaulWartenberg2016
@Waldo:
I hope to God the Joint Chiefs decide to crash the entire nuclear arsenal so Trump can’t use it.
Just A. Guy
@Elixir: Crunch the numbers. If Clinton can’t win both Michigan and Wisconsin, it’s done. Michigan looks like it might pull through, but Wisconsin doesn’t. If she loses Wisconsin, and carries every other state she should, plus Nevada and New Hampshire, it’s tied 269-269, and goes to the House.
JGabriel
@redshirt:
Or NV, PA, MN, WI, and MI. If she wins those, it puts her at 271, whether or not we win ME or NH.
Aikurudae
No, actually, America won’t survive a Trump election.
PaulWartenberg2016
I’m starting to wonder if the election WAS rigged, but in favor of Trump.
How the hell can so many people be voting for that sonofabitch?
Somebody better be hunting down every Russian operative in our nation to see if they’ve been fucking with our voting machines.
Amaranthine RBG
I wonder what would have happened if Bernie had been the candidate?
Kay
@Just A. Guy:
She lost Wisconsin. It’s over. It’s almost all in.
amygdala
@JGabriel: And she needs 271 because there’s some D elector in Washington State who’s refusing to vote for HRC.
amygdala
@a hip hop artist from Idaho (fka Bella Q): I hear you. I’m pretty anxious, but haven’t thrown in the towel yet.
Corner Stone
@Amaranthine RBG: FUCK YOU

We’ve known forever that everything Trump said was projection.
Why didn’t we notice and pay attention when he predicted “rigged election”?

@Amaranthine RBG: Which Senate candidate in this cycle was ideologically closest to Sadners?
CaseyL
@Kay: Fuck. Fucketty fuck fuck fuck.
Mr Stagger Lee
@amygdala: He is a member of the Puyallup Tribe, who thinks he is genius, I wonder whta he will think when President Trump orders the to total extermination of the Dakota Access Pipeline protestors?
Anya
I am sorry but I am angry. I worked my butt out to elect Hillary. I traveled to fucking hellhole Ohio and canvassed. I am angry that a huge segment of my country chose racism and nativism. MEdia helped create a monster who has no plans, Sanders pushed conspiracy theories about how dem establishment is corrupt. You cannot imagine how many people used that logic to explain why they were sitting this one out of voting for a third party. This fucking country is full of morons. It’s also full of hate. I’ll survive in my little UWS bubble but it’s heartbreaking.
Mnemosyne
@Amaranthine RBG:
I’m sure that Trump would not have run this same white supremacist, anti-Semitic campaign against a Jewish man. And an anti-Semitic campaign would not have been effective against a Jewish man.
Redleg
I have been sick to my stomach since 8:30 tonight. I have to keep telling myself that there is still a good deal of vote counting to do and that things may turn out okay. It’s hard to imagine Trump being able to win almost all the battle ground states and some normally blue states.
Amaranthine RBG
@Corner Stone:
Don’t worry Breyer and RBG are going to live forever. Forever I tell you.
You ignorant fuck. Look in the mirror. You got what you wanted. This is what happened.
amygdala
@Mr Stagger Lee: Oh, wow… I wasn’t aware of the back story. Yeesh.
Waldo
@SiubhanDuinne: heh. Well good point, I guess.

Some humour maybe? How to move to Canada: Immigration website crashes as Donald Trump election victory looks imminent

@Suzanne: i’m good with that

Uh — its not funny just yet. But thanks anyway….

Hey that might be Trump’s plan to stop global warming: Nuclear WInter
Ohio Mom
I have one kid. He’s disabled. His cousins all live far away and have no real relationship with him. I was counting on Medicaid and Social Security and nice non-profit housing organizations and job coaches to take care of him. I was hoping that when the day comes that I must shuffle off this mortal coil, that I could be halfway confident he would be moderately safe and happy without me.
Tissue Thin Pseudonym
@Mr Stagger Lee: That’s nice. I need fucking health insurance, my current employer doesn’t provide it, and I can’t get it on the individual market if the ACA is repealed, because of pre-existing conditions. So, staying here either means finding another job that does, or not being able to get health care. So, there’s a pretty good chance I won’t be around to help you retake the country.
Corner Stone
@Amaranthine RBG: FUCK YOU
Aleta
I guess high voter turnout is effectively countered when polling places can be easily eliminated and long waits and travel distances can be maintained. And the Voting Act is gutted by a guy who has opposed cicil rights and protections against harassment since the Reagan years, and is put at the head of the Supreme Court.
Waldo
Guy on abc is suggesting trump might now take this opportunity to pivot.
Juju
I can’t believe this.
cmorenc
@amygdala:
A special Bernie Bro snowflake who will arrogantly hold himself blameless for throwing the electoral college to Trump, because he reasons “she should have run a better campaign”. Which even if true, doesn’t change the fact that this guy is going to be a dick on alleged progressive purity principle, when the practical result is disaster for decades for the prospect of every goal he is supposedly standing for.
CaseyL
I’m not even sure Trump will do any work – just turn everything over to Pence and Congress. Jesus Fucking Christ.
Bobby D
As someone else said recently, “We live in a barely civilized, asshole nation”.
They were right. I feel sick.
mkro
So, I guess maybe endless snark combined with pointing & laughing at the Republicans from voters like us on BJ didn’t quite do enough to stop this hellscape from happening.
I still wonder why someone like John could ever have been on their side …
Kropadope
Just had to nominate Clinton.

I can barely stand to think of the fucking gloating if Trump should win. I don’t think I will watch the news for a good month or so.

@Mnemosyne: even more to the point, the candidate who wanted to raise taxes on the middle class, for their own good!
mkro
Breitbart, Drudge and Fox News now become the official WH propaganda sources
Kropadope
@Mnemosyne: First of all, he wouldn’t have had to work from a point of everyone already hating him. The second thing, maybe if the Dems weren’t so busy rolling out the red carpet for Hillary, they might’ve had an actual good choice.

@Steppan: I wonder what a Pres. Trump and the GOP Congress will do when people on diabetes meds and dialysis start dying because they can’t get health care anymore. This is the kind of story the press will get onto, especially as it hits the red states particularly hard. Similarly, I expect Putin to move on the Baltic states sometime early in 2017 in the hopes of fracturing NATO. I wonder what those anti communist patriots in the GOP will do then. Lastly, I also wonder what will happen when Trump sets up his immigration Gestapo to deport millions, and they (inevitably) end up deporting native born Americans with Hispanic names and/or Hispanic Americans who resort to 2nd Amendment solutions. His administration will spend years in the courts. And if nothing bad happens to Trump and the GOP because they successfully transform the US into the Fourth Reich, well, my family all have Australian passports, thanks to the 10 or so years my spouse and I spent there working at a university. At least we’ll have a safe place to live while the US discovers what fascism is really like. And maybe nuclear war, too.
Aleta
@Ohio Mom: My SIL in the last 15 years set up (via NYS social programs) a number of group homes for disabled folks to live, with assistance but also independently of institutional care. If it’s possible to consider a different state, I could put you in touch with her in case she could offer ideas for other locations and programs that might have financial assistance?

Ironically, Germany is now a popular destination for Brits with German Jewish backgrounds, the better to escape Brexit. Germany needs skilled younger immigrants to balance the aging of their population. There is also Lithuania, an EU nation with a highly educated population that is declining. That is is a riskier choice, of course, since Trump will help Putin split NATO apart to “Finalndize” Lithuania back under Russian control.

I powerhave been saying for m onths our media will be the death of us as a world

@Kryptik: Understood. That’s the problem – America has been that way for at least the last 40 years. They just found the candidate who knew he could be out and proud about it and be rewarded

When do they count the early votes?
MJS
@Mr Stagger Lee: Okay, Chief. By the way, you may want to read up on Donald’s plans for Syrian refugees, and Syria for that matter. Here’s a clue – by the time you and the rest of the Wolverines “win this again” Syrian refugees won’t be a thing anymore
