This is John Weaver, who I think was McCain’s right hand man back in the Mavericky Maverick “Boy, Do I Hate George W Bush” 2000 primary campaign. Now working for Kasich (who cut early voting in Ohio back to ten hours, the asshole).

The fact that the FBI released this ‘investigation’ and within four days decided there was nothing there is criminal. If it was so fucking easy to clear those emails, why did they not wait? Instead they decided to interfere in the election, knowing damn well that they did not have anything.

I’m trying desperately to keep myself offline until the results start coming in on Tuesday. I just can’t handle the shouty orange thing and his entourage anymore. At the moment I’m about halfway through the complete works of Arcangelo Corelli.
My prediction is 323 solid votes for Clinton with IA, OH, MO, GA, AK, AZ and NE-2 too close to call. Trump gets 150 votes and some but not all of the close ones. I wish I were as confident about the Senate. Could be 49-51. Could be 53-47. We’ll probably know early Tuesday night though. Enough of the nailbiter Senate races are in the East Coast (NH, NC, FL, PA) that we should know early on if turnout will give them to the Democrats.
I’m still mildly hopeful that Pelosi will get the Speaker’s gavel back, but a lot of things have to break in the right way for that to happen.
Final prediction is that Trump makes a graceful (for him) concession speech, but drops hints that the election results are a result of a “deal” he made, inflaming the conspiracy theorists in his audience. The TV bobbleheads will ignore that and talk about how “Presidential” he looks.

It’s packed with anti-Semitic dog whistles, anti-Semitic tropes and anti-Semitic vocabulary. I’m not even sure whether it makes sense to call them dog whistles. The four readily identifiable American bad guys in the ad are Hillary Clinton, George Soros (Jewish financier), Janet Yellen (Jewish Fed Chair) and Lloyd Blankfein (Jewish Goldman Sachs CEO).
The Trump narration immediately preceding Soros and Yellin proceeds as follows: “The establishment has trillions of dollars at stake in this election. For those who control the levers of power in Washington [start Soros] and for the global [start Yellen] special interests [stop Yellen]. They partner with these people [start Clinton] who don’t have your good in mind.”

I think the current theory is that there’s a rogue group of agents involved in the investigation who were threatening to leak the information if Comey didn’t say anything. He tried to put it out in the blandest possible way, though he should have known Jason Chaffetz would try to blow it up into something. I assume that Comey also stupidly thought he could walk it back successfully after the review turned up nothing.

@David ?▶️?Blue Wall?▶️? Koch: I saw it and it was frightening and disgusting. A commenter (Jeffro?) wondered if it would come off as same argument as a progressive Bernie or Democratic ad, and maybe build Trump’s bogus progressive cred. I don’t think so. Sanders would have some facts and logical argument in it. This was just showing (coincidentally? I don’t think so) random influential Jewish faces and intoning about unspecified dark conspiracies that are blighting the lives of decent hard working (white? yeah, enough other bigot dog whistles to assume ‘white’ was implied I think) people.
Soros, Yellen and Blankfein are not part of some sinister global conspiracy, that is absolute nonsense. In fact, lower and middle income working people should thank Obama for nominating Yellen. She has done a great job in steering interest rate policy in responsible way so far (We will see about months after election. I agree with Krugman and Baker that it’s too soon to raise interest rates more than a very tiny symbolic amount).

As for the post, I wish I were more sure that Charlie Brown is Republicans rather then Democrats. I’ve read and heard some news reports that almost every single one of the emails were duplicates of emails already submitted, and the remaining had not one damn thing to do with any HRC bogus email scandal.
The biggest problem with his model is his “trend” correction. The problem with it is not that it is always wrong, it may often be right. The problem is that it can’t distinguish an end to a trend until it has passed, thereby guaranteeing it will be wrong when trends change.
With the plethora of polls near the end of an election trends can develop quickly and change quickly leaving his model particularly exposed to error right when it needs to be the most accurate.
23.

@redshirt: The most unusual thing is happening with the betting odds. HRC went from -400 to nearly -700 w/ Comeys comments, BUT the odds for the Senate have completely flipped to the GOP. Now a moderate fav to keep the Senate. I dont understand why they would move in opposite directions, but they both have, a huge amount.

@Roger Moore: I’m not sure I buy that. If he wanted to stop leaks, he could have sent out a memo (or whatever) saying that anyone who leaks anything is fired on the spot. You know, act like he actually had some control of the organization he is in charge of.

@inventor: I’m confused about what Silver is doing, and hard to read and see for myself what the math guts are doing, compared to Wang. I just read an article saying that Silver was purposefully NOT adjusting his model, in order to insure that he was not accused of supposed fiddling he did to downplay Trump chances in GOP primary.
But I also read Sliver put in some kind of ‘Comey letter’ adjustment to tweak trends after Comey wrote his first BS letter that was advertized (falsely) as ‘reopening’ the HRC email investigation.
Those two things don’t go together. The second thing is putting in ad hoc guesstimate, and impossible to validate, trend adjustments in the model on the fly.
Edit: can anyone steer me to a thorough analysis of the 538 methodology?

This was the political equivalent of point-shaving. They had to know weeks ago that there was almost certainly going to be nothing new here. The House got put out of reach by this, and Clinton’s political life as president-to-be-elected-regardless became much more difficult because of this.
@inventor:
I’m not sure if you have the trend thing correct. As I understand it, the goal of the trend analysis is to look at successive polls from the same outfit to distinguish between the polling trend (i.e. how the election is changing) and the house effect (i.e. how that pollster models things that might create systematic bias). I still think that 538 has screwed up its model by making it way too sensitive to short term fluctuations, most of which are more noise than signal.

52.
inventor
@Roger Moore: Actually, I think we agree. If a pollster has a series of increasing polls for a candidate 538 will apply an increasing adjustment to the most current poll. This makes his model overshoot when the trend changes.
It can also act as a “gain increase” making it overly sensitive to small changes or short trends.

I want to see the overvoting totals for the R Senate candidates in battleground states.
Actually, if they (some vague someone for now) are actively seeking to reduce confidence in the existing government, system, etc. this flip-flop of Comey rather makes sense and feeds that hoped-for anxiety and rage (in the usual suspects, also rather as usually).
56.
jl
@Punchy: What polls would they know that we don’t? Wang’s Senate prediction is growing more favorable to Democratic control. I think a problem with betting markets is that we don’t know the betters’ total portfolios of bets, who is coming in new to place a new bet on only one market, who is balancing their portfolio of previous bets. What is the best measure for them of most likely outcome?
People in betting markets want to make some money (edit: or avoid or minimize losses from previous positions), and predictions when you aggregate may not be same unbiased estimate of mean of the polls.

The overseas markets jumped on the news about Comey.
@Roger Moore:
I don’t buy that theory. It doesn’t take into account Comey’s original press conference where he defied all FBI tradition and dumped a load of bullshit insinuations on Clinton before getting to the only actual thing he was officially there to do, recommend no charges. Comey personally wants to sabotage Clinton. That must be part of any explanation.

@jl: Too many ways to interpret it, so I’m not sure that’s the simplest one. @debbie: Sadly, from what I’ve heard of person-in-the-street interviews, there are a lot of voters who dismiss Trump’s extremist rhetoric as just showmanship and politics, and say that they will vote for him because he will get the country moving again for hard working people what been cheated by the system. I figure these are very low info, and hate to judge, but probably also low thoughtfulness voters.
I don’t remember one that didn’t sound like an older white person, so I hate to think so, but I wonder if some subliminal bigotry is prompting that. The successful white business man who talks tough and big, just must have tough and big plans that will work, and surely, he doesn’t really mean all the weird things he’s said. Well, as PT Barnum said….
Edit: I feared Trump would be smart the disciplined enough to go with a more consistent and convincing progressive front for his campaign. He never really did. Our election was a little over a year ago. Most of the time, it looked like the liberals were slightly ahead, with the social democrats sometimes inching ahead. For a brief period, it looked like the conservatives might pull it off. Then came election night. Atlantic Canada is an hour ahead of the Eastern time zone and Newfoundland is an hour and a half ahead. When the results started coming in, EVERY seat had gone liberal. Record numbers of people showed up to vote and the liberals ended up with a majority.
These numbers and massive line ups for early voting bode well for the election in general, especially if the reports of a Latino awakening are true.

My cause for optimism today: After reading about how significantly Hillary’s ground game eclipses Team GOP, I was paddling around at Sam Wang’s place and saw that there’s a clickable EV map that shows current polling and then allows a +2 adjustment for the candidate with the demonstrably better GOTV effort (and again, this is Sam Wang, so he’s not fucking around with that ground-game stuff, he knows what’s happened in the last several election cycles). So far it’s been typical Tweety nonsense about Trump giving up his strong message that could have worked by going off message too much, Chuck Todd says Bannon was on the right track with the populist message but kept getting sidetracked by all the conspiracy and anti-semetic stuff. He also says that Trump made the same mistake as RMoney. Instead of sticking to his message, he chased news cycles, he kept reaching foe every shiny object instead of simple repeating his core message day after day, it feels good like a B12 shot, but it doesn’t last. Then Kellyanne came on and does what she does best, lie, when Tweety tried to call her on it she coped an attitude and he backed off and let her spew till it was time to cut to Trump.

It was also a sort of awesome pot-luck sort of situation as folks were encouraged to bring food to eat/share, and even a volunteer at the *craft service* table able to tell me that all the vegetarian pizza was gone, but point out the other options available. The lady sitting next to me has a son who worked on the Obama campaign and is traveling from LA to Las Vegas to canvass like Mnem did.
I feel optimistic about the election, because I cannot imagine that Trump’s crazy campaign has even a smidgen of the organization that Hillary has, and that I witnessed. Towards the end of the afternoon, volunteers were passing out all of the contact info for free rides to the polls in the swing states we were calling.

Hillary Clinton’s favorability has broken 50%. Eat your goddamn hearts out, GOP.
Aboard his gold-plated jumbo jet, the Republican nominee does not like to rest or be alone with his thoughts, insisting that aides stay up and keep talking to him. He prefers the soothing, whispery voice of his son-in-law.

And what I have actually enjoyed recently is the change in how people characterize KellyAnne Conway. When she came on, even though she was an obvious no talent hack, they all had to say how smart she was. How professional she was. How her expertise was getting out the women votes for R’s.
Well, no. She’s a deranged, hate filled hack. And they have all had to stop saying how professional she is and how smart. Because all she does is lie and just lie and then lie again.
It’s been kind of great, really. And I am looking forward to the time when I never, ever see her or hear her ever again.
Two more days of GOTV. I think I need to veg out with a non commercial option tonight. The ads are horrendous and I can’t believe he went full on elders of Zion. Once we get this election behind us we have a lot of crap to clean up.
What works for me is to pull up some YouTube videos of comedians (which ones? Why, all of them, Katie) and laugh it out. George Lopez, Sam Kinison, Mitch Hedberg, Louis CK, Dave Chappelle, Chris Rock, just fire it up and keep going until you feel the tension slip away.
@jl: I am not a computer expert but I know somthing about evaluating large troves of electronic docs. It is basically the application of filters — first, the metadata (came from Clinton server) then deduping and then reviewing what was new. Or maybe they deduped first. @Barbara: If they were almost all duplicates, then computer could evaluate meta-data and match against known emails very quickly. Even if 650,000 relatively short emails with some attachments? Could search for likely matching texts in known emails and do a scan for discrepancies in a a couple of seconds. Put a few of workstation type PCs on it and it should be done easily in a couple of days. That is what I’ve read from several experts on the topic, and from what I know of searching data bases and pattern matching, I believe it.
One IT maven wrote it could easily be done with plenty of coffee breaks and time for deep thoughts.

@Barbara: “Duplicative” of what others have said, but
(a) part of the email standard (RFC822) is a message-id. That message-id is for all intents and purposes a unique identifier. When that is a “hit”, you can dedupe trivially.
(b) but also, modern search-engine technology is (at its base) about -efficiently- finding documents that are similar to each other, and to your search query. There’s lots more after that, but fundamentally, that where it all starts.
So …. yea, 650k emails is kinda trivial to get down to those that -might- be responsive, of those, the ones that are or are not obvious dups of known emails, and then of the ones that might be responsive, and aren’t obvious dups, yeah, you have to review manually. But by that time, your text-analysis methods have usually eliminated most of the stuff that would waste people’s time.
At least, that’s my understanding of the area. I’m a computer scientist, and have a passing understanding of the area (information retrieval) but am certainly not an expert.
Matthews thinks Donald Trump is, underneath it all, a blue-collar antiwar populist who just gets tripped up by his big mouth and red-blooded American masculinity sometimes. Probably because Chris Matthews fancies himself a blue-collar antiwar populist who just gets tripped up by his big mouth and red-blooded American masculinity sometimes.
Yeah maybe…Matthews clearly has some anti-HRC if not anti-woman issues, and he clearly keeps trying his best to identify with whatever he perceives as “blue collar”. Why that is, I don’t know and don’t care.
What I can’t stand is that he’d rather still talk about possibilities, ways Trump could have kept it close, coulda won it all!, rather than just note that Trump is a disgusting human being unfit for elected office at any level, full stop. No need for commentary on how he could have won if he’d just stayed ON MESSAGE (god that is all these dumb ass talking heads care about)…perhaps just for once, Matthews could simply note that Trump iis a nightmare of a human being and his party is beyond off the rails for nominating him. Full fucking stop.
I mean, they could spend the next entire six months looking at the racism, Bannon’s connections, the Russia angles, what the taxes hid, the 12+ instances of sexual assault, the recent failing of yet another Trump business in Toronto, the report of Trump’s buddy at the Enquirer buying off a Playmate who had cheated with him a year after he married Melania, fer chrissakes…and just keep going. That’s just the Trump stuff – they could do another six months of shows breathlessly covering the cowardice of every single elected person in the GOP with the possible exception of (gack) Mitt freakin’ Romney and Jennifer Rubin.
but they won’t…they’d rather gossip and game out scenarios where Trump could have won, because they are such sage observers of the national political scene and how else are we to benefit from their wisdom if they don’t go back over this election eight ways to Sunday and point out ways that Trump could have won. Trump was never going to quit being Trump, so QUIT FUCKING WASTING TIME, Matthews, and point out every disgusting sleaze ball who enabled him to even get this far.

He says he has no faith the GOP will do the right thing is interested in their desire to govern. Rather says he has faith in the American people, who will want the president to get things done, so he doesn’t think it matters what kind of concession speech Trump gives. Greenfield says a man who goes to the Al Smith dinner and says she hates catholics shows that he is capable of anything. Tweety laughs and chuckles yes he did, he doesn’t want to accept that Trump is really a racist fucking troll. Susan Page says she can overcome this by getting something done by reaching across the aisle. Rather says she can do this by being humble and magnanimous, something he’s never seen her be. annon was on the right track with the populist message but kept getting sidetracked by all the conspiracy and anti-semetic stuff.
They really can’t get around to actually reading Breitburt, can they? They really can’t believe that a wealthy guy like Bannon might actually believe the stuff he writes and that it isn’t some game he’s cynically playing to get eyeballs. Bannon absolutely believes that those missing white voters didn’t show up for Romney because they weren’t sufficiently tuned into the racism. He absolutely believes that he’s speaking for everyone that matters. He very much believes that there are too many Hispanics in the country and that Jews are too powerful. That’s his solution. But, goodness, they can’t believe that about him because he’s wealthy and used to be a banker.
@hovercraft: Why on earth would any Democratic president, especially the next one, reach across the aisle for ANYTHING right now? Their seditious hissy fit has rendered them the DISLOYAL opposition, and unfit to serve. NO GOPers in the administration, NO kissing up to them in the name of false bipartisanship, and screw Tweety and the rest of the beer hall putsch-lite crowd if they don’t like it.
” Chuck Todd says Bannon was on the right track with the populist message but kept getting sidetracked by all the conspiracy and anti-semetic stuff. ”
Todd doesn’t understand that the populist message was the side track? To the extent that it is not a cynical sales bait-and-switch, their populism is a confused feeling that the global Jewish banker and college educated snotty liberal eggheads and white race traitors are ripping off good white folk and giving stuff away to minorities. That is literally all there is to it. No actual knowledge, no interest, no actual populist, or even progressive ideas. Just bigotry and bitterness. A few Trumpers, notaably Ivanka, showed them how it was done, but they had no understanding or interest. 90 percent of Trump’s proposals are reactionary trickle down SOP GOP, and most of the rest is a few mindless slogans.

Soros, Yellen and Blankfein are not part of some sinister global conspiracy, that is absolute nonsense. In fact, lower and middle income working people should thank Obama for nominating Yellen. inventor
@Baud:
Punchy
@redshirt: The most unusual thing is happening with the betting odds. HRC went from -400 to nearly -700 w/ Comeys comments, BUT the odds for the Senate have completely flipped to the GOP. Now a moderate fav to keep the Senate. I dont understand why they would move in opposite directions, but they both have, a huge amount.
WaterGirl
@Roger Moore: I’m not sure I buy that. If he wanted to stop leaks, he could have sent out a memo (or whatever) saying that anyone who leaks anything is fired on the spot. You know, act like he actually had some control of the organization he is in charge of.

@jl: I tried to watch that ad but I couldn’t really get myself to listen closely to what Trump was saying. Even so, just the tone of his voice and the tone of the ad was creepy and alarming to me. It just felt wrong.
No way would that have been a Bernie ad or a Hillary ad. My two cents.
jl
Edit: can anyone steer me to a thorough analysis of the 538 methodology?
mike in dc
This was the political equivalent of point-shaving. They had to know weeks ago that there was almost certainly going to be nothing new here. The House got put out of reach by this, and Clinton’s political life as president-to-be-elected-regardless became much more difficult because of this.
Roger Moore
@inventor:

GrandJury
@Corner Stone: Ya think. This election was decided in July.
Only thing I’m surprised about was that it’s not going to be a bigger blow out. And no it wasn’t because of the Comey thing although that didn’t help.

Actually, if they (some vague someone for now) are actively seeking to reduce confidence in the existing government, system, etc. this flip-flop of Comey rather makes sense and feeds that hoped-for anxiety and rage (in the usual suspects, also rather as usually).

I don’t remember one that didn’t sound like an older white person, so I hate to think so, but I wonder if some subliminal bigotry is prompting that.

I did my first ever phone-banking for Hillary today in NorCal, and they rang a little bell indicating an announcement to be made, and once everyone had finished their calls, the FBI/Comey letter was read out to great applause.
First time for me doing this sort of thing, and honestly – I’m far from a natural at it. But it was so cool to be surrounded by like-minded people, and ringing the bells when we had a confirmed Clinton voter.
That is what I’ve read from several experts on the topic, and from what I know of searching data bases and pattern matching, I believe it.
One IT maven wrote it could easily be done with plenty of coffee breaks and time for deep thoughts.
Edit: pattern matching, like BLAST Search for any bioinformatics people around here. Can be done very very fast, can be sloppy first pass, plenty of time to go back and redo if match is bad.

Probably because Chris Matthews fancies himself a blue-collar antiwar populist who just gets tripped up by his big mouth and red-blooded American masculinity sometimes.

@Roger Moore: Comey is a very capable lawyer. That is, he has spent his lifetime crafting words and rhetoric. He had to have known very well how his ambiguous phrasing would allow for over-the-top interprectaion. His letter was all wink-wink-nudge-nudge. There was nothing about it that suggests it was meant to be “bland.” Also, too, Rudy Giuliani spoke of it two days before it was sent to Chaffetz, so it was a Trump/Roger Stone ratfcking operation. Maybe the letter was not written by Comey but was presented to him with an ultimatum — put this out as your work or we’ll destroy you. Good grief, I’m starting to think in terms of conspiracies. I’ll be glad if this year ends well.

In 1940, 95% of the public were non-college voters. In 2012, that demo had shrunk to a mere 21%.
It’s a vanishing demographic.
Now there should be good policies aimed at all demographics, but it makes no sense to only focus on one demo.

@FlipYrWhig:

The “-400” means the bet is favored to win. You would need to bet $400 to win $500. That’s equivalent to an 80% chance to win.
If you see a bet like “+400”, that’s an underdog bet. If you bet $100 and won, you’d get $500. That implies a 20%!chanxe to win.

Tweety says the Ashcroft hospital bedside story convinced him Comey was a good guy, and that’s that. Never mind precedent.Dan Rather thinks the rigged election/system means that we are in a dangerous place. Jeff Greenfield, says the fact that they will believe the next president is a criminal, that 3 senators say no new SC justice, almost defaulting on the national debt, we across the Rubicon. Greenfield says if she does something with Ryan democrats will howl because we hate compromise. So basically an entire segment saying she needs to knuckle under to the rethugs or it’s her fault when nothing gets done.
