Hello! Let’s make a calendar.

in case i haven’t completely broken the site with this post, it’s pets of balloon juice calendar time. sales of the calendar (through cafe press) benefit a small rescue organization chosen by john cole.

since i’m getting a later start than usual but still want to hit a late november publication date, can you all send me your pet photos ASAP, please?

all the details: you should send me the highest resolution image you have. if you’d like your pet’s name immortalized in the calendar, include the name in the file name or in the email you are sending me with the image file. if you have more than one pet, be sure to list their names in a way that’s mostly obvious. if you send me a photo by the deadline or before i finish laying out the page, i will get it in the calendar. pinkie swear.

deadline: friday, 18 november

email to send the photos to bjcalendar2017 at yahoo dot com. you can send me questions there or ask them here.

    Can we vote on the Tunchshot?

    Are pics of an obese orange raccoon with a yellow possum on its head OK?
    I may have an old pic. I’ll go check.

    Keith P. says:

    @jl: Monstrosity! (I’ve got a raccoon and a possum living in my backyard, along with a couple of feral cats). I’m constantly kicking them out of my house, as they both have excellent smell and a taste for catfood. The raccoon is cool as hell…very smart, terrific hearing and sight, pretty docile (although I won’t go within 5 feet of it).
    Possums are f’n retarded…one of the dumbest animals I’ve ever come across. I’ve had *multiple* ones get themselves stuck in a corner, even walking right past the door they came in through. And their hearing/vision is pretty bad.

    @Keith P.:
    Heh. Does he have all his shots?

    jl says:

    @Keith P.: I do not like raccoons. Because they are smart and ornery. If I have to deal with a smart ornery animal, I prefer a goat.

    Edit: if the goat gets too smart and ornery, you can eat it. Which might be a very unPC comment in the annual animal pic calendar announcement, but that is life, people.

    Schlemazel says:

    @Keith P.:
    We now have the damn possums in MN, this is a very recent thing. Had one on our deck just last night, first live one I have ever seen. The environmental damage we are doing is going to screw up a lot of stuff. No clue what the whole impact of the great rats is but they do not belong here so it will not be positive.

    Jeff Spender says:

    I’m sorry for the OT, but someone told me that 27% of the Republicans that early voted in Florida voted for Clinton.

    Is this true

  13. 13
    Pogonip says:

    @jl: Raccoons are also, theoretically, edible–my dad ate them as a kid–but they’re the last choice because the species is a reservoir of rabies.

  14. 14
    Omnes Omnibus says:

    @albertZ: I don’t know about resolution, but that is awesome.

  15. 15
    Pogonip says:

    @Schlemazel: Possums are new to Minnesota? I thought they were indigenous to the lower 48.

    They are also edible, and safer than raccoon, but don’t taste too good.

  16. 16
    Feathers says:

    @jl: I know a guy who swore he’d never get one of those keypad door key systems, because the raccoons would figure it out.

    @Pogonip: Possum tacos?

    a hip hop artist from Idaho (fka Bella Q) says:

    @albertZ: Is that from hyperbole and a half? It looks like simple dog, but I haven’t been there lately.

  21. 21
    Omnes Omnibus says:

    @Argiope: No, just no. Oh god, no.

    We have enough kittehs to cover ~3/4 of the year. If we add the fox, groundhog and deer out back I am pretty sure we have enough for the entire year. Can I have an entire month? Not asking for much – I am cool with February.

    Helen says:

    So this is it. My sister is here to take my stuff. We load up the truck tomorrow. The apt closing is Nov 10th. Fly away date is Nov 15th.

    I’ll be living in the Hilton for 5 days. Very excited. Well, not about the Hilton. About the move.

  25. 25
    Trentrunner says:

    No initial caps? Why?

  26. 26
    a hip hop artist from Idaho (fka Bella Q) says:

    @Helen: Congratulations! I understand why the Hilton part isn’t exciting.

  27. 27
    WaterGirl says:

    @Helen: I’m excited for you. It’s the move of a lifetime.

  28. 28
    Helen says:

    @a hip hop artist from Idaho (fka Bella Q): @WaterGirl:

    Thank you both. I will comment from across he pond!

  29. 29
    Omnes Omnibus says:

    @efgoldman: Even worse.

  30. 30
    Gex says:

    I can think of no better distraction from Election Shitshow 2016 than to comb through my volumes of pet pictures to pick some for you to consider.

  31. 31
    Omnes Omnibus says:

    @Helen: Are you now a US citizen?

  32. 32
    Helen says:

    @Omnes Omnibus: Wat? I was born a US citizen. I’m also, cuzza my Mom an Irish citizen. And by Ireland, a citizen of the EU. I am multi-cultural!!

  33. 33
    a hip hop artist from Idaho (fka Bella Q) says:

    @Helen: I feel better – I thought you were headed to Ireland from US so Omnes had me quite confused. Thinking I’d gotten in backwards. It’s quite exciting to follow.

  34. 34
    Helen says:

    @a hip hop artist from Idaho (fka Bella Q): I am moving from the US to Ireland. Mostly cuz I love Ireland. Also because I can. Why the hell not? This is big old adventure.

  35. 35
    Omnes Omnibus says:

    @Helen: Me being judgmental: I am not leaving (until I am on a death list). I’ve had family here since 1629. It’s more my country than there’s. Give in if you want. I won’t.

  36. 36
    Helen says:

    @Omnes Omnibus: Dude I am not “giving in.” I am going to live the life I want to live.

    My move has nothing to do with politics.

  37. 37
    Omnes Omnibus says:

    @Helen: Then have fun.

    ETA: It is not like people have said that they will bail based on the election.

  38. 38
    Helen says:

    @Omnes Omnibus: But I have not said that. Ever. Pay attention to whom you are shitting on.

    ETA Good night. I have a huge couch to move tomorrow. Gotta go to sleep.

  39. 39
    Omnes Omnibus says:

    @Helen: I am not shitting on you. I was explaining why I asked.

    Skepticat says:

    Beth, high resolution of course, but what size is best for you?

    low-tech cyclist says:

    @Jeff Spender:

    someone told me that 27% of the Republicans that early voted in Florida voted for Clinton.

    IIRC, there’s no way of knowing that – the only thing they do with the early votes before Election Day is tabulate the number that come in under each party registration. They don’t tabulate who they voted for until the voting is over on November 8. And it’s not like anyone’s doing exit polls of early voting.
