It can honestly be said that both candidates had their best debates last night. Unfortunately for the Republican party and its candidate, twenty minutes of ‘not acting completely unhinged’, followed by seventy-five minutes of ‘more greatest hits from the Breitbart/InfoWars archives’ can’t effectively match ‘consistently demonstrating why her experience and depth of understanding makes Hillary Rodham Clinton uniquely qualified to serve as President for the next four years.’

about our democracy: if Hillary wins 270 electoral votes on Nov 8 her ability to take oath of office will not depend on Trump's permission
— John Harwood (@JohnJHarwood) October 20, 2016
If his final petulant refusal to face reality once (when) he loses wasn’t so completely outside the norm, there were at least a dozen other Trump statements that would be sparking discussion this morning. Since moderator Chris Wallace was determined to feed red meat to his Fox News base, his first question was about SCOTUS and whether the candidates believed the Constitution was ‘a living document’ or ‘settled by the Founding Fathers’ (as is an item of doctrine among the wing-iest wingnuts, such as the late Antonin Scalia). Trump seized the opportunity… to complain that Justice Ginsburg had been very mean in her comments about him, before babbling about ‘states’ rights’ to prevent ‘babies being ripped from the womb, three, four days before birth’. (He did not, however, attest that he’d overturn Roe v Wade, so the nosiest part of his intended audience won’t be placated.)
He vowed to prevent Clinton ‘overturning the Second Amendment’. He claimed that ‘all those women’ who accused him of assaulting them ‘had been debunked, every one’ — as Clinton campaign plants. He once again defended Putin as ‘a strong leader, smarter than her’ and refused to accept that Russia might have had anything to do with the Wikileak hacks. He said that ‘millions of people who shouldn’t even be allowed to vote’ were giving Clinton an unfair advantage. He babbled about ‘bad hombres’ coming across the border — with Clinton’s collusion — to ‘poison our children with their drugs’. He didn’t protest when Clinton accused him of not paying federal income taxes, but he did insist that Warren Buffett and George Soros took advantage of the same loopholes. (Buffett has gone on the record explaining that he hasn’t, and will probably say so again today.) And that’s just the low-lights!
For the first time, the madness of Trump's ideas rather than the madness of his manner are taking centre stage at tonight's debate.

@rk: My theory is Russian oligarch money is the only thing keeping the Trump organization financially solvent. There’s a reason they want him to win, and that might be because he owes them a lot of money, so they have leverage over him. Or, they think they do. As we’ve discovered, Trump has no problem welching on debts so in his mind the fact that he owes them money may mean he thinks he has leverage over them.

It was pretty interesting last night to see most conservatives on Twitter make stuff up about the 2000 election and Al Gore.
Al Gore didn’t “refuse to accept the results” of an election. That is not what happened.
There is an automatic recount under Florida law when an election is that close. That’s literally what occurred.
Donald Trump isn’t the only fabulist on the Right. Apparently huge numbers of them have rewritten history re: Al Gore, including really prominent media figures. I didn’t know fantasies about the 2000 election were so widely accepted on the Right.

It may seem a bit counter-intuitive but there’s a pretty good argument that Trump has done Clinton, the U.S. and a world a very great service by turning this election in to a race to the bottom of the swill bucket. Clinton has had 30 years of persistent vileness thrown her way by a G.O.P. smear factory that exists only to stoke, feed and puke-funnel destructive lies about the Democratic Party and its representatives. The Fourth Estate that – should – have been doing its job by exposing the ‘Great, Right-Wing Conspiracy’ behind this barrage of disinformation has instead popularised and mainstreamed much of the bullshit, and in the process shielded the ever more extreme politicians of the Republican Party who have most benefitted from the kneecapping of Democrats and Democratic ideals. As long as the Republicans put up a wealthy white man in a nice suit their rabid base were free to vote their prejudices while the MSM whitewashed them as sturdy, principled, small-government patriots who had nothing, nada, zip at all to do with the frothing geyser of hate out there on the ‘Fringe’. Anyone who said otherwise was just a conspiracy freak, mockable, and, anyway, Both Sides.
Trump shot that long running myth dead as the mobile disco. This election, the entire basis of the Republican Party Presidential Campaign for 2016 has been for Trump to drag the squealing, albino mutant spawn that is modern movement Conservatism out of the basement, roll it naked and sweating onto the world’s most brightly lit stage, smear red, white and blue make-up on its eyeless face and make out with it while screaming “SHE’S A 10!!!!” over and over and over again in bad Russian. Clinton must have bribed someone at the Lapland Consulate in Benghazi to pass on one hell of a letter because Santa has brought her everything she could possibly desire and its not even winter yet. There’s no going back from that. The Republican Base wanted a ‘True Conservative’ that spoke for them. They got one. And everyone else in the country has had no choice but to listen as he told the electorate just how crazy he and his Party were.
That’s good news. The cat is out of the bag and eating the fools who have been riding it for decades. Ye-Haw.
TL:DR – The Republicans outsourced their entire 2016 campaign strategy to valued Stormfront commentator WhitePatriotLivesMatter1783 and he made his case with gusto and endless enthusiasm. Uh oh.

@Kay:
I have learned by now that the right wingers get nearly everything wrong. They just have to alter history, all history, to show the left [or what they deem the left] in the worst possible light. A secondary goal is to show themselves in the best possible light, but they really only care about smearing Democrats or anyone on the left. They really don’t care that much about their own reputation as long as the opposition is made to look worse.

So Mika has pulled up all the times democrats have ever complained about elections, Howard Dean, someone in Rolling Stone who wrote an article about the Diebold machines, so what Trump says is not that unusual. Willie Geist and Harold Ford Jr. have to point out that those instances occurred after the election occurred and were about specific things. Did my first ever “look in live” at a Morning Joe show. Lasted less than 5 minutes. Joe was churlish and seemed bitter about how last night’s debate is being perceived, noting that GOPers critical of his performance never liked him anyway. I guess that means that criticism of Trump is only legitimate if it comes from Kellyanne, or Joe himself.
I can see a certain point-and-laugh appeal to the show for some, but I’m not in that group. I just found it annoying, however much it might explain the mindset of too many of my acquaintances (who probably get their views, uncut, from Fox and Friends).

But “both sides” are to blame for the deadlocks that have stopped congress doing its job & it is President Obama’s fault that the SCOTUS is short one member – he won’t nominate a RWNJ for the position.
Somewhere I have a list of the plotters who met to do all in their power to make the President a 1 termer. Most have been political failures since that time. If Ryan & the turtle can lose this time around – will be close to all of them gone.

I had a BIOS update that went terribly wrong a few weeks ago, sent the computer(it was quite bricked) to HP for repair. They got it back to me quickly and I’ve spent the night re-attaching all my peripherals. Ugh. But on the bright side, I think that the replacement motherboard has a sightly better processor.

Tweety has 3 issues he cares about, and since Trump has mentioned them in a few speeches, he wants him to focus on these, and if he does he would win.
Immigration, but real reform, not another bs bill like Simpson-Mazoli, which no one ever meant to enforce.
Stupid wars, which never made any sense since he supported every war we’re in, he just lies about the fact that he did.
Trade, his opposition to NAFTA, and the hollowing out of the rust belt.
I’d actually add that Tweety is anti abortion, so even though he says he’s pro choice, he seems to always accept pro life framing.

This is unpopular or maybe just a bad thing that lawyers don’t say but Supreme Court justices aren’t super-de-dooper, irreplaceable, to be worshiped and deferred to. Enough. They’re really smart lawyers and there are quite a few really smart lawyers. It’s not like we have TEN and if one retires there’s a giant shortage.
It’s too over- the-top for me, too fawning. Justice Roberts was the most brilliant person ever until Justice Alito. I’m just sick of it. They’re smart. They’re not irreplaceable gods. OMFG the way they talked about Scalia when I was in law school, the professors. Incredible genius. Then I went to a forum where Scalia was the speaker and he was a poor listener and nasty as hell. He humiliated this 1st year law student based on a misunderstanding of the law student’s question. He’s a bad listener, which in my opinion is the kiss of death for a trial judge. It doesn’t matter how brilliant he is if he’s incapable of hearing and understanding what people say because he’s busy formulating a cutting put-down. It was supposed to humiliate the law student but everyone who listened knew Scalia got the question wrong. It was awkward for the reality based community in the audience.

Trump simply isn’t that guy, he’s just a ranting ego-baby who happened to see an opportunity for profit and knocked the whole rotted edifice of Republican dog-whispering down while grabbing at it. The Media would have loved, loved, loved to give him a snazzy, star-spangled makeover but he simply Would Not Let Them.
At the end of the day Trump is the spokesman of the Republican Base and everybody now knows exactly what that sounds like in real time. It’s a real pleasure to see the reputations of every Republican political figure of any note lying crushed and broken in his wake, while their boosters in the Media cradle the twisted corpse of ‘Compassionate Conservatism’ in their arms and blubber “Why, Donald? @Kay: Scalia may have been brilliant early in his career, but by the end he was an embarrassing hack who didn’t do his homework and had a fondness for onion-on-my-belt ramblings drawn from Breitbart-type websites and right-wing conspiracies. (One of millions of examples — his ramble during an Obamacare-related case about the so-called “cornhusker kickback”, an initial horsetrade attempt to get the vote of Nebraska’s Ben Nelson for Obamacare. Ignoring that the deal was initially talked about, but not actually made. And that if legislation is to be ruled unconstitutional because legislative horse-trading was involved in crafting it and securing votes, the only legal acts of Congress would be endorsements of mother’s day.)

Lost in the haze of smelling salts for the media is that Trump didn’t just fail to say he would accept the election results, he wussed out and didn’t say he wouldn’t accept them, either. He’s a fucking simpering weasel, and I can’t believe the deplorables out there saw that last night and didn’t feel used. Pat Caddell’s association with the democratic party is that he was pollster / consultant for Jimmy Carter’s presidential campaigns in 1976 and 1980. Caddell was always at best a “blue dog” sort of democrat, who was hired by Fox to be one of their “in-house democrats” hired either because: 1) they could be counted on to be comparatively ineffectual compared to the conservative hosts/panel members they were paired with (see Alan Colmes) OR: 2) they were the kind of conserva-dems who could be counted on to take a contrarian right-wing-talking-points friendly perspective on events, especially those involving democratic politicians. @liberal: 71% = Republicans still have a fair chance of retaining the Senate how?
There is caution and then there is absurd defeatism. Life is not about 100% assurance. You take what you got and run with it instead of gloom & doom all the time.
Matt McIrvin
@amk: That’s a probability, not a vote share. 29% is better than two coin flips coming up heads. That’s not a small chance.
Note also, that 71% is assuming that a 50-50 Senate is a Democratic win because of Tim Kaine’s tie-breaking vote as the Vice-President. But Kaine will still have to be replaced in the Senate in a special election, in which a Democratic win is not at all assured. That’s a fragile majority. The chance of even a 51-seat majority is way below 50%.
Matt McIrvin
(McAuliffe gets to appoint an interim Senator, but there would be a special election in 2017, an off-year; though it does coincide with the election for governor, this is the kind of situation in which Republicans are strong.)
amk
@Matt McIrvin: I know what probability means. Do you?
liberal
@amk: No doom and gloom. Simply that there’s a 29% chance that HRC will get no USSC appointments, because the shitbird Republicans won’t allow any unless she picks a right-winger.
liberal
@amk: I don’t know him, but I’ll wager good money that he’s forgotten more probability last week than you’ve ever known.
Matt McIrvin
@liberal: USSC, hell, with an actual majority they could block all appointments. Sorry, no Cabinet as long as we have the Senate, or a Republican becomes President.
Or they could put forth their own shadow-Cabinet slate of hardline Republicans and say, these are the only people we’ll confirm, it’s them or nothing. The only thing preventing the Senate from doing this kind of thing in the past was informal behavioral norms of the sort Congressional Republicans have been happily breaking ever since 1994.
Of course I don’t know that they’ll do any such things; I’ve spent the past eight years trying unsuccessfully to guess what taboo they’ll break next. But it’s in keeping with the genre. The political media would probably normalize it, on the grounds that Clinton’s presidency has an asterisk next to it–she only won because Trump was so personally loathsome, not because of any ideological preference of the people, so it’s only fair that the Republican Senate gets to pick the executive branch they would have had under better conditions.
