— NYT National News (@NYTNational) September 12, 2016
… At an event in northern Virginia on Friday, Mrs. Obama will urge voters to register ahead of the state’s Oct. 17 deadline, the first of what aides say will be a series of appearances in the coming weeks in support of Mrs. Clinton.
Mrs. Obama’s steps into the campaign spotlight underscore her transformation from a once-reluctant political spouse into a confident public figure, a role she says she has embraced more fully during President Obama’s second term.
Mrs. Obama’s communications director, Caroline Adler Morales, said the first lady’s focus would be on encouraging voters in swing states, particularly young people and African-Americans, to register and vote.
Her message, Ms. Morales said, will emphasize “the qualifications and demeanor a president needs, the values we hold dear as Americans and our shared hopes for the future.”…
Apart from holding strong to those values and hopes, what’s on the agenda as we start the week?

Hello, all! Starting another week is hard today.
Mustang Bobby
Good morning from South Florida, where I am marking the 45th anniversary this week of my start of my college education at the University of Miami’s Ring Theatre where I was sure I was going to become an Actor. Turns out I’m a better writer than actor — all my roles had names that began with “The”, as in “The Waiter,” “The Trainer of Seals,” — and I had a face for radio, anyway. But I made some lifelong friends and I went on to grad school in playwriting and also learned business skills while waiting for the big break, which is gonna come any day now.

Good Morning ?, Everyone ?

@Mustang Bobby: I got my fingers crossed for you.

Back to a “normal” schedule after our ERP upgrade; most of the kinks have been sorted. Getting an MRI on Friday to see if my back is the source of my sciatica; if surgery is required, it will be round two for me (last one was in ’02). Given recent events, not exactly enthused about the prospect, but the meds I’ve been on are losing their effectiveness, and I need to get this done.
Mustang Bobby
@Ben Cisco: Please tell me you’re using something other than SAP for your ERP. We called it Start Adding Personnel.
Best wishes for your MRI.

Hillary is a G. Had pneumonia, and STILL showed up to the fundraisers, and the 9-11 tribute. Typical woman, and I say that with respect.

Such a confident public figure that she already has people stealing her speeches!!
@rikyrah: Yes, I am so proud of Secretary Clinton for soldiering on even though she was ill. Hoping that she gets better soon and ignores all of the media braying that’s going to happen this week. Her surrogates really need to get out there and damp down the fires started by irresponsible “journalists”.
Patricia Kayden
@Immanentize: ((Immanentize)). Hopefully, your week will get better.

I am having trouble understanding their motivation. I could see if they were just anti government as a motivation but they are just anti Democratic Party. They certainly don’t believe they will get more open government from the GOP, do they? Has it just been a front for Russia all along? I don’t get it.

Hillary is fucking brilliant.
Going into the debates Trump had the advantage. all he had to do was not piss himself or drool and the liberal media would have declared him presidential, no matter how stoopid.
But by faking a fainting spell, she lowered expectations so much she can win with the public just by not falling asleep on stage.
reagan did this in 1984. his first debate was horrible and people openly speculated if senility was setting in for 74 year old. then in the 2nd debate he uttered some canned lines and the liberal media declared him the winner cuz he didn’t choke on a pretzel or kill his dog in front of little children.
Hillary – you magnificent desert fox.

Powell was just on CBS this morning, about the opening of the African American Museum. There was a protester in the background, but I couldn’t make out what he was saying. Powell is not ready to say who he is voting for and will wait until the debate. He did say that the republican party has attracted a segment of the population that bothers him.
Patricia Kayden
@Matt McIrvin: Hmmm hmmmm. Somehow she melded with his mind and forced him to sexually assault two women in Sweden. Makes so much sense.
@JPL: I didn’t like how he refused to acknowledge that he gave Secretary Clinton advice on her email server. He must have forgotten that he sent emails out on that topic, which Democrats were smart to recently release to back up Secretary Clinton’s claims.

@gogol’s wife: There will be no President Trump. Even with the past few weeks of negative media, Secretary Clinton still has a comfortable national lead over Trump in the latest polls. I think he is rapidly reaching his ceiling.
JPL
@Patricia Kayden: I agree. Charlie Rose and Powell are good friends, and I’m sure that had something to do with the questions. Also today is suppose to be about the museum, so maybe they wanted to focus on that.

When I went to bed last night at 11pm, the VSP’s were still obsessing on Hillary’s health on Twitter. And this morning – more of the same.
There was one tweet that sums it up nicely I think:

Sunday : the media reaction is why they didn’t
satby
@Mustang Bobby: I’m rooting for your big break too!

I just spoke to long-term Dem volunteer who worked Dem booth at a fair over the weekend. He says it’s “really nasty out there”. He got tired of Trump supporters arguing with him, told them to “move along- why you gotta hang out here saying this shit”- he’s sorry he lost his temper. He’s very even-tempered. If he’s telling them to go away it’s bad. Generally we just let them vent and they move on when they realize no one is responding anymore after the initial rant/conspiracy theory.
In other news Trump campaign says they will release medical “numbers” after they get them, so sometime after the tax returns and Melania’s speech on her immigration status. Glad we put those issues to rest.

One lesson from this election is in media relations, namely, don’t try. Treat ’em like Trump, vocal contempt, lies and stonewalling. They will say what their “narrative” is regardless of the facts, so why bother providing them with any.

Mrs. Greenspan is outraged, outraged I tell you, they have just botched this entire thing. They have played into Donald Trump and Rudy Gulliani’s conspiracy about her health. Hillary has more energy than anyone traveling with her including her press pool most of how are younger than her, she is healthy except for the cough, which she says was allergies, which is what she thought it was. But she gets a diagnosis on Friday and doesn’t tell the press, which she has an affirmative responsibility to tell the press. There’s no rule but in the interest of transparency, she should’ve told. Then she leaves Ground Zero without her press pool, with out telling them where she’s going, then for ninety minutes they say nothing until they tell that she’s at Chelsea’s apartment. Then she leaves without talking to the press, and wait eight hours before they make the announcement. This is just a terrible lack of transparency !! Oh and Trump is also not transparent.

One simple explanation could be that watching a black man getting slammed by racists from all sides hit close enough to home to break through that thick Republican Party First cocoon and make him speak up, but watching a woman getting slammed in the same way for sexist reasons doesn’t do it. It’s been a long time since I read it, but as I recall he does bring this up in his biography. In context, it’s discussing the incredibly racist overtones of the 1988 presidential campaigns. He basically says, was it racist – yes, of course. Republican strategists made a cold strategic decision that they were never going to break the Democratic near-monopoly on the black vote, so don’t even bother trying, might as well go after the bigot vote instead. But at the same time, he says he keeps this in perspective: when he personally worked with Reagan and Bush and people at that level, he was never personally treated in a racist fashion.
Crap. I need to stop. Colin Powell is not a healthy topic for me to discuss.

Kay,
I just wanted to comment. I read your concerns. I get your righteous indignation. I understand it. I completely agree with it.
I think that this election season has made it very clear: we no longer should, in any general way, respect the MSM.
You talk about the non-vetting of Trump. The GOP never could vet him, because they never had a problem with his POLICY stances. They peddled in dogwhistles and racial animus for the past 50 years. Not one of them could stand up and say, as he said those fowl things about Latinos and Muslims and Blacks –
DONALD TRUMP, THAT KIND OF POSITION HAS NO BUSINESS IN THE REPUBLICAN PARTY.
Who are they phucking kidding. They’ve been peddling in racial animus since the decision to go the Southern Strategy Route.
And, make no bones about it, every GOPer since Nixon, up to and including Willard, ran a Southern Strategy Campaign.
Trump just got rid of the dogwhistles and came with the hatred, full throttle, unvarnished.
The GOP in general sees running for President as a GRIFT. The entire lot of them.
100 MILLION for Jeb’s SuperPAC anyone?
The difference with Ferret Head, is that he sees the CAMPAIGN as the grift. The GOPers – the nominees – usually use THE OFFICE AFTER ELECTED as the grift.
The MSM bent over backwards to avoid explaining WHY Trump was beating the other folks in the GOP Clown Car.
It’s ‘economic insecurity’ …and then, the hole was blown through that, when it was proven that the average Trump voter was making 72k.
‘Economic insecurity’? – phuck.outta.here.
They did anything and everything to avoid calling out the racial element in the room.
And, then, he proceeded not to disavow any and all White Supremacists that came his way…..suddenly, they became ‘ alt-right’.
PHUCK.OUTTA.HERE. again.
They’ve twisted and turned and bent out of shape to avoid the racial animus at the CORE of his candidacy.
So, here we are.
That’s why Non-Whites like myself tell others to stop clutching the pearls when Hillary, using his own words, and the words of his supporters – to point out such racial animus.
She, of course, is more gracious than I would be or ever could be, because racial animus is the CORE of his campaign.
By pointing it out, Hillary is also sending the bat signal to the Non-Whites, who will ultimately have to come in and save this country from itself- once again.
The MSM has shown itself completely and thoroughly. And, should be treated accordingly.

As for NPR, I still think it is the closest thing to balanced that we have. I like Diane Rheem and Terry Gross. I think Hockenberry’s show for the most part is informative. The Idiots at Morning Joe give a heads up into what idiocies I will be hearing each day. It’s part of my morning routine, and it helps me stay motivated to get out of the house as fast as I can. Yes I could turn it off, but where is the challenge in that? It’s a preview of what bullshit I’ll hear each day. Fun fact, years ago when I had a private office, I used to have my radio tuned onto WABC which was the home of Rush, Hannity and Mark Levin. At first people thought I was a fan, but eventually we all used it to make fun of their impotence, they were railing at the changes in America, which they have no power to stop.
I’m a masochist.
CONGRATULATIONS!
@satby: Thankfully, they are not. Disease control is one thing. Eliminating mosquitoes entirely would be an environmental disaster, with drastic consequences up and down the food chain everywhere.

@Steeplejack (phone):
That sounds like perfect sleeping weather.

@Major Major Major Major: Maybe Adams should concentrate on making Dilbert readable again. It’s become the Cathy of office comics.
rumpole
@Quinerly: I did. If they are going to put conservative hacks on NPR, then NPR should do us the courtesy of putting on a real opposing view. She and Bill Kristol should do stock picks.

During the 1960 campaign, Richard Nixon got a staph infection in his knee that put him in the hospital for two weeks. He also got the flu.

@Hal: he’s probably keeping silent because THOSE PEOPLE (drumpf supporters) scare him… as the should.

@hovercraft: I emailed John on Sunday with links to a couple short videos and a pic, but really nothing new and exciting is happening. He’s gained a bit more weight, is moving much better and is convinced that he can totally get a squirrel if he cries hard enough at the base of the tree in the backyard.
