If Democracy Now announced they were funneling GOP emails stolen by Putin through the current degraded Wikileaks, there would already be 17 Congressional committees preparing to impeach Hillary Clinton for treason. And Democracy Now doesn’t even support Hillary Clinton!

Today was the home inspection for the house we are interested in. Thumbs up from the guys doing the inspection! Tomorrow, meeting at the bank!
Betty Cracker
I said it this morning, and I’ll say it again: At this point, Assange is basically a Breitbart operative — he’s not even up to Fox News standards. The WikiLeaks Twitter feed smells like a patchouli-scented Gateway Pundit subsidiary; Assange actually links to Jim Hoft as a credible source of information!
Dog Dawg Damn
@schrodinger’s cat: we are closing today and it’s been a long grueling process which I’m told has been relatively quick for the area. Considering we plan to gut the entire thing and re-do every single surface, I am just hoping there are frequent naps and benzos available throughout the next year.

What will the Republican party be after this election?
1. A regional party with no hope of winning a national election
2. Same old collection of big business, social conservatives, racists, all struggling to trust each other but failing.
3. A Donald party, which keeps the name but is actually a small (27%?) fraction of the old Republican party — which will rename itself and having dumped its racists into the Donald faction, be positioned to create a whole new coalition that really is about fiscal discipline & personal freedom.

Janet Wu, the dean of local Boston TV news political reporters, who’s been terrible as all of them have been in my 42 years of living here but has outlasted her peers, just ran a piece on Trump’s speech that analyzed it solely from the perspective of “here’s what Trump wants to say, did he hit his marks” rather than, well, content. The rot runs from the media top to the media bottom. Wu is by no means the bottom, Boston’s a big, big market. But no local reporter in any medium will ever defy the conventional wisdom, it’s too risky in a dying industry, unless they’re on wingnut welfare.
I don’t think warranted press criticism here pays enough attention to the economic reality. There have been serious layoffs/buyouts at the Times this year. One of my friends from my sports journalism past got caught. Fears for your job does not encourage anyone to think independently.

Shantanu Saha
@hitchhiker:
Thanks, I needed the laugh. The corporate, plutocratic core of the Repulican party has never in my political lifetime been about fiscal discipline or personal freedom. It has always been for lowering taxes and giving extra privileges to their real base, the plutocrats and captains of industry. Now since most of the country is neither, their only path to power consisted of pitching red meat to the rubes. “Fiscal discipline” means slashing safety net and counter cyclical programs that they say only benefit “those people, so they can get the racists on board, while winking that they don’t mean cutting programs for white people. “Personal freedom” means less regulation for industry, which can go forward polluting and treating their customers and workers like shit. Again, “regular people” (white males) will be taken care of. And “personal freedom” stops at the bedroom, so they can get the holy rollers on board.
The only consequence of spinning off go the racists is that the Republicans have to come up with another pitch to get another bunch of rubes to vote to lower the taxes of the plutocrats. I figure the next political innovation is to try attracting the Bernie or Bust and BLM crowd by doing something like for defunding police and emptying the prisons in exchange for huge corporate tax cuts.

@Shantanu Saha:
You are wrong in only one respect. “Personal freedom” means the freedom to hurt others, period. The plutocrats want to be able to fuck over their customers and workers, and the poorer conservatives want to be able to fuck over minorities. Every time they can’t smack a woman on the ass in the office, beat a homosexual to death, or tell a darkie to go shop somewhere else, their freedoms are being taken away.

He has not been detained in the embassy. He’s hiding out to avoid rape charges. His claim is that those charges are fabricated as an excuse to extradite him to the US, but that’s transparent nonsense. If the US had wanted him extradited from Britain, they could have had him extradited easily enough without going to the trouble of fabricating charges against him in a third country. He either believes his own BS, in which case he has a grossly exaggerated sense of his own importance, or he’s just making up an excuse to avoid facing the charges. Either way, there’s no reason for the rest of us to believe him.

@tokyo expat: That looks like a great resource! I would be interested – but almost 35,000 words in to my draft, my protagonist is still only seven years old, and the whole thing is basically, so far, set in one night with attendant flashbacks. I have a feeling this book is going to be as long as “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” – and no romance publisher is going to want to touch it. Probably NO one will want to touch it.
