Happy thoughts from the Washington Post — “Can Democrats ride an anti-Trump wave to retake the House and Senate?”:
… As of Labor Day weekend, the unofficial start of the campaign’s final stretch, the electoral map is bigger than Republicans are comfortable with. Bolstered by Republican nominee Donald Trump’s unpopularity with non-white, female and suburban voters, Democrats have recruited candidates in enough Senate and House races to potentially flip control of both chambers.
Democrats’ chances are strongest in the Senate, where they now lead in enough races to eke out a majority, with hopes of putting more in play should Trump continue to falter throughout the fall.
Republicans, playing defense, are asking voters to look past Trump and to question whether they really trust Clinton’s party to fix Washington…

What’s on the agenda as we wrap up “official” summer?
For the Pink Floyd fans, via NYMag‘s Vulture blog:
… To coincide with the band’s upcoming box set, The Early Years 1965-1972, a nice, soothing video for the Roger Waters-penned “Grantchester Meadows” has been released. The video features a rare performance of the song taped for the BBC — juxtaposed with modern pastoral scenes — with Waters and David Gilmour providing the acoustic vocals and guitars, and Richard Wright joining in on the piano…
I’m not sure there’s ever been a musical group of whom I felt I needed 27 discs’ worth, but it looks like there will be smaller samplers available as well.

Yesterday was Los Angeles’ 235th birthday, I swear it could pass for 100(being that it’s in LA, probably had some “work” done).

New rule. No conservative white people or white clothes after Labor Day.
Wrestling with a bit of mild insomnia. Thank goodness I don’t have to work tomorrow (yikes, I mean later today).

Happy Labor Day, everyone. Don’t labor too much.
I’m going away for a while. I’m sad that I’ll miss Hillary bringing the post-Labor Day hammer down on Trump, but the diversion from this campaign will be good for me. I know people like Obama and Clinton have a much better support system than I do, but I don’t know how they handle this on a day-to-day basis. I’m only on the sidelines (thanks, primary voters!), and I’m still feeling stabby.

So, trip to NYC area upcoming soon.
Possibility of a meet-up, New Yawkahs? Friday the 16th or Saturday the 17th best dates for me (although any weeknight that same week would also do). Already have a favorite pleasant venue in Manhattan in mind if it should happen. Good bar, good eats, low key. Small rooms or garden terrace available.

You mean the Washington they deliberately broke over decades? Gobinment in a bathtub and all.

With Trump polling at 1% with black voters, of course the NYT is up with a thumb sucker about young African Americans disaffection with Democrats.
I do think the Democratic party has work to do on race and get more serious about progressive causes (at least based on the somewhat small subset of young black activists I know in the Twin Cities), I just sort of wonder at the timing of this piece. Maybe a Monday morning to set the tone for the week: “Yeah Trump is a rolling disaster with AA voters, but Dems, well they ain’t so hot”.

The goal is to suppress black voting. If they can be convinced that they can’t win then maybe they will stay home in sufficient numbers to keep the Senate & House. Meanwhile the Ds do need to do a better job for people of color, we can’t be satisfied just being a little better than the current GOP.

they call it ‘highway robbery’. In this case the term fits:
good luck fixing it tho.
after several attempts to raise the gas tax failed on state wide votes, they tried to increase state highway funds by raising the state sales tax in the last election. where are most funds from sales taxes generated? where are the most miles driven?
as much as i know we need to increase our highway funding, I would have voted no a thousand times if I could have. fortunately, it was not necessary.

Weird how conservatives never mention this when they’re talking about their devotion to the “white working class”:
They also never mention the underfunded schools in rural areas, the areas where they have a political lock and have for decades. They don’t do shit for these people. They starve their schools and imprison them constantly. Poor white people are funding our municipal court system here- they’re fined every time they turn around. Weird how the entire focus is on “urban areas” on the Right when this is going on right under their noses in the places where Republicans hold all political power.
Maybe Donald Trump could give one of his “dysfunction” lectures in a rural county in Indiana, where the whole bottom income quarter are in prison or on probation. Republican-led policy. Whole families destroyed.

Clinton’s people are going to have to do the legwork. I’m assuming some of the $143 million she raised in August can go to opposition research. Topics could include Trump’s outstanding foreign loans, his cozying up to the mob in Atlantic City, the Trump group’s numerous interactions with the DOJ concerning rentals to blacks. And how about an ad about the $25k donation to Biondi in FL and her subsequent dropping of the Trump U investigation (which turned out to be an illegal donation). Now that was outright pay to play. Go for the jugular, eventually they will have to get more aggressive. I’m starting to have flashbacks of Kerry and swiftboating. The media simply will not do their damn jobs.
Also, how about reminding people about Trump’s birtherism. Most sane people were pretty turned off by that episode.

@Kay: yep. There’s your next Republican candidate for governor.

@Baud:
The Post editorial mentions that Trump has never held a public office so hasn’t been subject to transparency or disclosure of any kind. Ever. That’s hugely relevant. It matters. In my view is should have been factor number one or two when weighing the need for investigations into both candidates. They simply know much more about Hillary Clinton. She’s had security clearances and required disclosures for decades.
I’m pleased they finally realized what should have been obvious from the moment he entered the race. They don’t know shit about this person. It’s a huge blunder, in my view. They missed the Trump forest for the Clinton trees.
Investigations have operating theories, a frame. The frame for Donald Trump should have been “we know nothing other than what he himself has revealed and 90% of what he has revealed has been managed for maximum profit”.
They’re not the same. She was much, much more regulated.
Immanentize
@OzarkHillbilly: how’s the shoulder?
Kay
@Baud:
I’ll just give you an example of this difference. I do adoptions, and I’m required to provide certain information to the court. I’m more confident when I begin the process regarding a public school teacher or a nurse or a lawyer because they have licensing requirements and a reporting structure within those professions. They are vetted. I do the investigation anyway but I’m more likely to find a problem with a person who has been working in an area that isn’t regulated. Donald Trump has never operated in the kind of heavily regulated system where Hillary Clinton has spent her whole working life. He shouldn’t get less scrutiny- he should get more. They have to start from scratch and they won’t be able to rely upon mandated reporting requirements, like those a Senator or Sec of State has to follow.
They just got this wrong. They made a huge error at the outset. I don’t think they can fix it either. He’s never been required to reveal anything. They have no leverage, no regulatory system. They’re reduced to these scolding editorials. Good fucking luck with that, press corps.
JMG
@Kay: They have the stuff of the amazing number of lawsuits filed against him, the people he has screwed, history of mob ties (pretty inevitable in NYC real estate, but still), etc. That’s plenty of material. To be fair, newspapers have done digging into Trump’s business record, but TV news has not. Either they are simply not good enough reporters to do so or have been told not to. Either one is perfectly believable.

@OzarkHillbilly: I am so sorry. I know you probably received all sorts of advice but ice can help. Doctor tomorrow my friend? I worry.

@JMG:
It’s more than that, though. He has never run for or held a public office. That process would have revealed information. They started way behind with Donald Trump. Just think about the Presidents of the modern era- they all underwent campaigns and held public office. They had a long public record and many, many mandated reporting requirements.
They have the least-examined, least regulated Presidential candidate of the modern era and they (now) have 60-some days. They blew it. They don’t have time. I get 60 days to investigate and write a report on a family in the children’s protective system and I have a prosecutor and a judicial order to compel release of information. They’ll be combing thru public records hoping for a hit. He himself won’t be compelled to release anything.

This is just ordinary investigative stuff- does the person hold some kind of license, has the person ever been required to meet some kind of professional duty for reporting info, that’s the paper trail. It’s the difference between someone who works in a heavily regulated or structured environment and the person who doesn’t.
Have you seen “Spotlight”? They investigated that story based on records the Catholic Church kept. Priests are regulated- there’s a structure they’re within. The records formed a pattern- a theory of the investigation. They would have been lost without it.

This is kind of Big Picture and it’s only my opinion, but I feel as if this huge blunder is a result of 30 years of a deregulatory mindset and the near-worship of “markets”. Donald Trump is an example of what happens when that’s your North Star. Trump’s “business career” doesn’t “prove” anything unless they imbued it with meaning from the start.
Chris Matthews thinks it tells him something – that “markets” are some kind of purifying mechanism. They’re not.

@?BillinGlendaleCA: it’s Istanbul, not Constantinople. Which is nobody’s business but the Turks’.
Kay
@JMG:
Why do they know anything about the Trump AG story? Because attorney general and campaign finance are regulated.
The only way to investigate Donald Trump is when he interacts with a regulated person or system. That’s very different than Hillary Clinton – she IS the regulated person. That’s the crux of the unequal process, but they read it backward. They said “we have more information on Clinton so we’ll do more coverage”. That doesn’t make any sense. It’s backward. It’s comical as an investigation. They demand more and more from the person on which they have reams, decades, and nothing from the person on which they have jack shit.
If I were to write this up as a report it would be all about Hillary Clinton. I could attach 5000 exhibits on Clinton. I couldn’t answer anything on Donald Trump. I’d have his age and his doctor’s letter. I don’t even know how they’re solid on his age, quite frankly. He could be 72 or 75 for all I know.

@SenyorDave: at the point right now, believing that if you haven’t seen enough of Donald Trump and are still hedging on whether to vote for him not, I’m not sure that we’re ever going to get there in time.
Now convincing folks that their vote for DT is wasted, that I could get behind. Keep those folks at home where we can elect more democrats into more positions to actually get shit done.
I believe this poll tightening shit is bullshit, I think voters are incredibly wearied of being polled. If the Dems need to message nationally its to make a few quick ads that highlight GOP intransigence and to then draw the line between… the fact that the GOP nominated Donald Trump to govern America, how the fuck can you trust their judgement on anything if the standard bearer of your party is a know-nothing racist, sexist blowhard. You want to blow up Washington, we want to fix Washington, put Dems in charge. They save the country from the great recession and we can do it again to save it from the GOP. The GOP is the anti party… anti immigrant, anti gun control, anti religious freedom anti womens rights, etc etc etc.. Just keep bringing that message home.

K-Thug: Clinton Gets Gored
And the reader commenters are assailing the NY Times in the comments.
Take it away, Dr. Krugman:
I am ashamed for the fucking New York Times, and its deplorable political team. They should be removed from covering the election. They’re actively getting it wrong with regard to the Democratic nominee, who’s already getting covered at a 5:1 ratio of the latest Trump news. The NY Times’ scandalmongering headlines and innuendo is giving cover to people falsely reporting Hillary actions and character all over the country. How many people read much beyond a headline, particularly when the coverage is behind a paywall?
Why remind us the NY Times was home to Judith Miller, and Jayson Blair?
I feel badly about paying for my NY Times sub, but still get value out of it. I don’t like supporting this type of “journalism”, though.

NYT really doesn’t like Hillary, does it?
Elizabelle
FYWP keeps eating my comments. I give up.
Elizabelle
@schrodinger’s cat: The K-Thug column was great. Tried to post pertinent parts, FYWP kept eating comments.
The NY Times has become ridiculous with its Clinton Derangement Syndrome. I don’t know what’s going on over there, but I no longer have much respect for them. They are actively dangerous.
Misleading headlines, wrong-headed reporting. And how many people look at the NY Times website and don’t read the stories, since they’re hidden behind a paywall? A lot, I would guess.

McGinty looks poised to blow the PA senate election. Sure am glad the DSCC spent a million bucks shivving Sestak.

@debbie:
You may enjoy Emma Smith’s Approaching Shakespeare lectures on iTunesU. She’s really quite good.

@Baud: Thanks for letting us know you’ll be gone. I think it’s safe to say that we will miss you! If you let us know the date range you will be gone, we might feel a bit less stabby in your absence!
schrodinger's cat
@Elizabelle: Washington Post and the Atlantic have been far better this cycle.
Bobby Thomson
@OzarkHillbilly: someone needs to start asking NYT reporters who is spiking the story.
schrodinger's cat
@Baud: Happy Labor Day to you too. Perfect season to travel. Bon Voyage,
Elizabelle
An item from the NY Times today, top of the website: Jonathan Martin’s daily Democrats in Disarray reporting:
Excuse me, Hillary is out there with policy speeches, every single week. But the NY Times and other media outlets are running 5:1 Trump Trump Trump! stories and burying Clinton coverage.
Incidentally, NY Times headline is: Young Blacks Voice Skepticism on Hillary Clinton, Worrying Democrats
Be askeered, Democrats!
debbie
@Bruce K:
That is some column! It’s very telling that he had to link to the Washington Post in regard to Trump’s buying off state AGS.

“Mr. Sunshine” sounds like a great name for a vintage 1970s drug lord.

@Baud: Tried to edit my previous comment with:
Of course I should have started with you deserve a break, have a great time, enjoy your travels, sounds like a great adventure! (FYWP)
debbie
@James E Powell:
Thanks!

@Elizabelle: I read the NYT article about some young Black voters’ distrust of Secretary Clinton. It wasn’t as bad as what I expected and shows that young Black voters are completely reachable if Secretary Clinton and her supporters simply explain her policies more vigorously. From that article, I didn’t get that young Black voters won’t vote for Secretary Clinton versus wanting to be wooed more actively instead of just having their votes taken for granted.
Anyhow, the NYT seems to have an aggressive aversion to the Clintons so it’s not surprising that they’re not cutting Secretary Clinton any slack.

@amk:
The very one.
Not so much the Party of Lincoln as the Party of Andrea Yates.

@OzarkHillbilly: Cities in western MO at least have made up for that — they chased chased all the meth producers/dealers out into the rural areas so the pigs could brag to the Chambers of Commerce. So it’s people in trailers whose families are destroyed instead of people in McMansions; whoopdedo.
Elizabelle
@Patricia Kayden: Agreed.
And a huge problem could be voter suppression; Republican legislatures often actively try to make it difficult or impossible for minorities and students to vote. (Looking at you, North Carolina. Thank dog Scalia is still dead.)
The term voter suppression appears nowhere in this article, but it’s a huge consideration.
Lizzy L
@Baud: Restorative time off; sounds like a great idea. Have a great time.
Elizabelle
@Baud: How long will you be gone?
Being Baudfree is not necessarily as good for us. We will get stabby. Oh wait. We’re already there.

Krugman:
Ironic that Bruni is on the same opinion page this morning.
Wish Kthug had linked to Bruni’s most egregious coverage from 2000.

I don’t listen to Floyd much anymore, Waters is such a sour depressing fuck, and sucked the life out of the band. It’s on him that so much of their catalog is music for the regular at the end of the bar who goes on nasty tirades when in his cups.

@piratedan:
Yup.
Soothing, level-headed, mid-western voice:
“The GOP:
– The party that shut down the government
– The party that threatened to default on government bonds
– The party that refuses to have hearings and vote on SCOTUS and judicial nominations
– The party that refuses to fund work on critical, dangerous infectious diseases like Zika
– The party that refuses to act to reduce unemployment, invest in critical infrastructure, fund disaster relief, etc.
– The party that refuses to fully staff critical agencies like the FEC whose job it is to make sure our elections are fair and transparent
– The party that gutted the VRA and is attempting to prevent millions of Americans from voting.
…
Don’t be fooled. The choice is clear this fall. Protect America and her traditions and optimism about the future. Help shape that positive future for yourself and your children. Vote for Democratic candidates in November.”
The election can’t be just about Trump this fall. So much more is at stake…
Cheers,
Scott.

@Elizabelle: Jonathan Martin, previously of the Politico.
Elizabelle
@I’mNotSureWhoIWantToBeYet: perfect.
Elizabelle
@schrodinger’s cat: Yup. Another Republican whisperer.
Politico has colonized the NY Times too. As they have CNN, etc.
ruemara
@Patricia Kayden: Those young black voters better learn to listen when she speaks then, because she has said what she’ll do for them. It just doesn’t make it into the very paper they’re talking to, looking for disappointed black people for stories to affect black voter turnout.
Sheesh, that article is bucket of piss.
I’m getting dressed and off to my celebration breakfast. Alone. Any requests for my presence for any gatherings this month will get what I got, “sorry, I don’t know what my schedule is”.

@?BillinGlendaleCA:
This doesn’t comport to Trump America’s version of history. They believe the white man came from east to west, manifest destiny style, and the last stop was the Pacific coast. No miserable trips around the Horn or across Panama. There sure as hell weren’t any Hispanics (or Russians) already there, and the natives only existed for purposes of target practice.

@ruemara:
I’m off to a family visit but sending my congratulations and cheers to you.

@Baud: Well, the Baud! 2016 campaign provided a refreshing diversion, but do what you must, just don’t stay away too long.
Elizabelle
@ruemara: Congrats ruemara.
May not be that great a consolation to have us celebrating virtually with you.

@Kay: This is where I always come off the rails if I’m arguing with libertarian-ish people.
I don’t watch the news or opinion shows much anymore (the agita is bad enough with podcasts) but if I did, I’d end up shouting at Matthews “Markets don’t work without rule of law! They are not magic, you booby! They have to have enforceable rules, which means government regulations, which requires negotiations & political decisions…. ”
Grrrr…. ETA Um yeah, well you get the picture, the market worshippers don’t understand that the system they’re embedded in could have different rules if that’s what was wanted – and then I lose my sh… ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Elizabelle
@Kay: And that’s 30 years of a deregulatory mindset brought to us by the Koch Brothers and the other plutocrats and their filthy think tanks.
Was reading up on the Koch Brothers and Art Pope (Koch Brother wannabe down in North Carolina).
Americans used to be better and smarter than this. Even with the racism, etc, that is now anathema. There was more of a feel of the public good, the commons.
Gone or under direct assault, in the plutocrats’ glibertarian fantasy world.
I'mNotSureWhoIWantToBeYet
@ruemara: I’m raising a mug of tea to you. Congratulations! Enjoy!
Cheers,
Scott.

@ruemara: I think you and I need to hang out, but until we do, I am celebrating with you in spirit!
Citizen Scientist
@Bobby Thomson: Yeah, I’m somewhat worried that Toomey, a guy who has really done nothing in his time in the state Senate, will be reelected again. We’ve gotta GOTV in PA!

@debbie: Agreed – those are great. You may want to check out “Shakespeare Retold” which is currently on iTunes (and probably other places.) They feature modern versions of Shakespeare plays like “Much Ado About Nothing” with Damien Lewis and “MacBeth” with James McAvoy.
