Thank Murphy the Trickster God for Newsdiffs.com… click over, and you can see just how extensively the NYTimes scrubbed its own report. Once the Phoenix speech made it clear Trump is incapable of demonstrating improvement in his meagre understanding of the world, it became imperative for the Grey Lady to replace its earlier new matured Trump theme with the bog standard staunchly defiant in the face of political outcry version.
And the Media Village Idiots so hoped for a little tidbit from the Trump camp, to brighten the dreary routine of searching for an excuse to claim that Hillary Clinton is “just as bad”, ergo BOTH SIDES!!!
The coverage of Trump's Mexico visit will tell us a lot about whether the media is normalizing Trump out a misguided desire for balance
— Dan Pfeiffer (@danpfeiffer) August 31, 2016
Trump's (listless) performance isn't important in itself. What was important was that EPN stood there and took him seriously.
— Josh Barro (@jbarro) August 31, 2016
In related news, perversely low expectations are turning out to be quite advantageous for Mr. Trump!
— McKay Coppins (@mckaycoppins) August 31, 2016
Trump banned the press from his Mexico trip. The MSM takeaway here will be "Why won't Hillary Clinton do press conferences?"
— Martha Jackovics (@BeachPeanuts) August 31, 2016
Trump's team (literally): Mexico trip is about optics, intended to dupe media.
Cable news: Wow! I can hardly believe my eyes. What a show!
— Angelo Carusone (@GoAngelo) August 31, 2016
Mexico meeting also a warning for Clinton on debates: Trump can benefit from low expectations.
— Jim Antle (@jimantle) August 31, 2016
Press holds Trump to lower standards than it holds Hillary, so both sides are the same! https://t.co/xB3rF1hAW4

I think it sucks to be a lot of people, on a completely bipartisan basis. https://t.co/BoPEbhkqIf

@DanaHoule If #HRC went to Mexico, looked vacuous, ignored translation, and read a prepared statement, media would eviscerate her.

Christ almighty. “Immigration crisis” “audacious” “overtures”. What the fuck made them think that there would be overtures? What “crisis”. He lives in New York for Christ’s sake. Has he ever met an immigrant and talk with them?

Hello all. Hi Anne Laurie!
Peale
I guess I find it a bit ironic that after helping Uganda craft and pass very severe punishments for homosexuality, the right wing has decided that the only immigrants from that country that will be allowed into this country will have to go on record as supporting homosexuality. And since trump has promised to appoint judges to the Supreme Court to overturn same sex marriage, will we only be letting in people from Dubai who support it? Somehow, I see signs that the commitment to that question being on the final exam is very low.
mike in dc
I don’t think this speech will move the needle for college-educated whites. The tone was too strident, too negative, too evocative of race-baiting. Obviously Latinos see it (correctly) as hate speech. Ditto for Muslims and most recent immigrants, particularly non-white immigrants. Trump might be the first Republican nominee to get net single digit support from non-white voters.
RK
So Pena Nieto is on Trump’s payroll I gather.
C’mon, you’re not that gullible, being taken in like a Trump U mark. Look at what Trump said just a few years back about illegals or a host of issues for that matter. He’s aware of what he’s doing. (Some would say making sure he doesn’t win.)
NotMax
SSDD?
Scurrilous Shmuck Demented Donald?
Sarah, Proud and Tall
@RK:
This is the only explanation I can come up with that makes sense. The alternative is that people with functioning brain stems and actual jobs an’ shit can actually be more stupid than i had believed possible.
Or, you know, both could be true.
Peale
@mike in dc: yeah. I’m hoping it was a blunder. People heard about a softening, but were treated to descriptions of murders and rapes in a policy speech. And thanks to the “perilous trip” (really, NYT. he wasn’t in any more danger today than yesterday), he delivered it when people could watch the whole thing. Hopefully, he wasn’t able to convince any more voters that they are living in the ruins of a disasterously failed state than he was able to convince during the convention.
Ian
Can we now dispense with the fiction that the NYT is a factually based, quality, or liberal newspaper?
RK
@Sarah, Proud and Tall:
Which is not to say Anne is wrong about Trump’s lack of policy knowledge which I think Ruth Marcus called appalling.
Peale
@Ian: yep. I’m quite bothered by it. I thought gaffney had run Grover norquist out of the top of the party for being married to a Muslim, but apparently someone is still handing out what words to use each day.
amk
One (un)possible explanation – russians hacked the grey lady?

6 – count ’em, 6 – Preston Sturges movies on TCM during east coast prime time hours on Sept. 1, including The Great McGinty, a tour de force appropriate for any election season.

John Stoer did a thing on twitter called #WhatIfHillarySaid
ETA https://storify.com/DemFromCT/john-stoehr-on-the-double-standard-used-to-judge-h
Like:
What if Hillary said Mexicans were rapists
And,
What if Hillary had 5 children by 3 husbands
SenyorDave
Just to go back to reality, there are several lead main stories on Yahoo are about Benghazi e-mails. I have no doubt that the media in this country would have done a both sides do it in the 30’s in Germany.
And BTW, nice job media when the Bush administration “lost” 2 MILLION e-mails!
Anne Laurie
@NotMax: Same Shit, Different Day
SenyorDave
@Aleta: Trump has said or done at least a dozen things that would have disqualified a male candidate, probably hundreds that would have disqualified Hillary.
Aleta
@Aleta: I misspelled his name. It’s John Stoehr.
Anyway, there’s 100 of them now.
27. What if Hillary wore a hat?
33. What if Hillary had a spray-on sun tan?
What if Hillary questioned her opponent’s health after Tweeting pics of herself eating a bucket of fried chicken?
66. What if Hillary were opposed by every single living former president?
88. What if Hillary said she knew more about ISIS than anyone, including chiefs at the Pentagon.
97. What if Hillary were blackballed by *all US banks* b/c of history of defrauding creditors & investors?
99. What if Hillary were financially entangled with Russian oligarchs close to Vladimir Putin.
Ian
@Peale:
I think Grover Norquist and Anthony Weiner should hold a bipartisan BBQ. Lets leave those steaks sitting out in the sun for them for a couple of hours.
Sarah, Proud and Tall
@RK:
No, not at all. Ignorance of policy is feature not bug.

@amk: hard to work the refs when they’re busy moving the goalposts and changing the venue… It’s getting to the point where if DT doesn’t soil himself on stage, it’s Presidential!
magurakurin
fuck it. Don’t get mad. Donate, organize, get out the vote. I saw the media reaction, watched three minutes of the Shitgibbon’s klan rally, shut if off and sent Clinton another C-note.
magurakurin
@Ian:
Yes.

As far as i can tell, the Donald didn’t say or do anything on this trip to Mexico that improves the case for a President Trump. If there’s any change in his polling numbers because of it, it will be fleeting at most. So I wouldn’t worry about it. Let him play his game, let Hillary play hers, let her campaign people and her supporters keep working on voter turnout.
Amir Khalid
I found this lovely YouTube channel dedicated to the fascinating topic Wie man Käse macht. Mr Webber, who demonstrates the cheesemaking and narrates the videos, has a nice calm soothing favourite-uncle manner, and these videos are just the thing to help you sleep at night, perhaps dreaming of Emmenthaler or Wensleydale or Gouda.
opiejeanne
@Peale: And yet Maggie Haberman of the NY Times insists that because Trump said his position on immigrants was softening, that it was indeed softening. Because he said so. It’s as if she didn’t hear any little bit of his speech in AZ this evening.
craigie
Well the NY Times may be a Trump booster, but their readers and commenters don’t seem to be buying any of it. So there’s that, I guess.
opiejeanne
@Amir Khalid: Wensleydale!
Wallace and Grommit! I actually found some Wensleydale for a Christmas party one year. Good stuff, but the name made everyone chuckle.
opiejeanne
Ms Conway, when it was pointed out to her that he had lied about the wall discussion said that his lying didn’t matter, what mattered was that he was Presidential.
Yes, how does that work, exactly?
Shalimar
It’s getting to the point where, if Trump blew up the press plane travelling with him, most news organizations would let Kellyanne Conway write their coverage from then on rather than assign another reporter.
Ian
@opiejeanne:
The most offensive part to me was when he called the wall “beautiful”. Does that qualify as presidential or as authoritarean?
JPL
@opiejeanne: Julia Preston just wrote an article for the NYTimes with the headline.. Donald Trump, Far From Softening, Lays Out Tough Immigration Plans I’m not sure what is going on at the Times. Instead of all the news that’s fit to print, they need to say, we make up shit so you don’t have to.
JPL
I didn’t watch the speech, and fortunately, visited this site before going to the Nytimes. Maggie Haberman was part of a group live tweeting the speech, so she doesn’t have an excuse for her column.
According to Trump, It Is Our Right As A Sovereign Nation To Choose Immigrants Likely To Thrive. No wonder the white supremacists loved the speech.
Amir Khalid
@opiejeanne:
Or the cheese-shop proprietor in the Monty Python sketch. “Mr Wensleydale, that’s me.”
satby
@JPL: ugh. Not at all sorry that the final stages of moving kept me away from the web and the news all day.
Good morning all!
PsiFighter37
Fuck the press. Anything for a close race for those shitheels.
JPL
@satby: You must be exhausted but in a good way. How did the floors turn out?
Bruce K
Thanks to the time zones, I slept through the whole thing, and when I woke up, my Twitter feed was reacting as though they’d just seen Nyarlathotep up close and personal. Was Trump’s speechifying really that much worse than what he’s been dishing out all along?
JPL
@Bruce K: According to the NYTimes, it was softening or not. It depends on the article you want to read.
bemused
I watched only a little of Trump last night. I don’t know which is more horrifying, sleezy, repugnant Trump vilely race-baiting or the hearing the unhinged rage and hate from the crowd there. Listening the malevolent crowd noise makes my hair stand on end and I have an instant and visceral feeling I’m in a place of extreme danger. It’s like those bad but thankfully rare dreams in which I am trying to get away from someone or something terrifying that seem to go on forever. Many in the media covering Trump screeds must feel that too but it doesn’t seem to be reflected in most reporting.
Ian
Here is Kellyanne Conway today
I need to see her long form birth certificate. I don’t need evidence, she has to provide her innocence to us all.
Thor Heyerdahl
Face it. The press has ad dollars in their eyes. Of course they need to keep this going with their thumb on the scale.
Don’t bitch about it here – donate, organize, volunteer. The rest of the world is depending on the acts of “good Americans”.
MattF
Jeet Heer has a useful approach to understanding Trump’s thrashing around on various subjects. He sees a three-way split among factions, Conway’s ‘political professional’ side, Bannon’s ‘alt-right’ side, and the family ‘Trump brand’ side. All in conflict, and Trump himself goes with the side he’s talked to most recently.
raven
@Thor Heyerdahl: “Don’t bitch about it here”
Yea right.
opiejeanne
@Ian: That’s pretty damned offensive. I had to shut it off after a while because it was such a hate-fest, so I missed that particular gem but I heard plenty.
opiejeanne
@Bruce K: It was more frenetic and felt louder.
Sloane Ranger
Just been over to Red State to get their take on Trump’s speech and found this which I thought was mildly amusing and worth sharing. Up until I read this I didn’t think anyone over there had a sense of humour! At least I hope it’s meant to be funny!
OK, can’t work link thing. In case anyone’s interested, it’s called Red State Exclusive: New Secret Plan that Guarantees a US – Mexico Border Wall with Mexico to bear the Entire Cost. It is an interview with a Secret Trump spokesperson.
NorthLeft12
@bemused:
Apparently the reporters covering Deadbeat Donald like to refer to this crowd as enthusiastic.
NorthLeft12
@MattF: I think Mr. Heer, like a lot of other pundits and reporters, has been taken in by Ms. Conway’s image rather than substance. She is part of a rabid right wing leadership group that includes many of the same white supremacist and LGBTQ hate groups that are flocking to the Trump campaign.
She worked for Crazy Ted Cruz for dog’s sake, so she knows how to spew hate and bigotry. She just does it in a polite and refined manner. This crap about her not liking the negative and abusive tone is a smokescreen to allow the media to believe that the Trump campaign will be toning it down under her guidance.
Good luck with that.
Peale
@opiejeanne: yep. Pretty much. I’m sure this new lying standard will apply to Clinton, too.
Bex
@Aleta: What if Hillary had a husband whose immigration status was “interesting?”
Tokyokie
@Peale: Well, there’s two of his wives……

@Peale: The spousal unit and I just returned from a trip to Mexico, and the only time I felt the slightest bit endangered was wading in the surf where there was a serious undertow.
