Last night while I was poking around YouTube looking for the Irish Rover music I posted I came across something I’d never heard before. The Blues Brother’s doing Sink the Bismark. It was supposed to be part of the set they played at Bob’s Country Bunker, but it was cut from the movie and never shown. Not wanting to mix and match last night, I decided to save it for tonight. So have at it!
And in the spirit of this election season:

@Major Major Major Major: Very nice. Very late-night.
divF
@Anoniminous: Haunting, both the song and the video. Also, the group is Swedish.

@divF: Thanks! That songwriter is my favorite lyricist.
But what do I know, I’m just techie scum.
:)
Major Major Major Major
@divF: Here’s another nice low-key one from the same album…
Omnes Omnibus
@Major Major Major Major: Meh.

To think that scene could actually happen along the Des Plaines river during a mid-Sept Trump rally in 2016 is pretty fucking….uh…terrible? Predictable?
Major Major Major Major
@Omnes Omnibus:
There, I gave you a citation, not just my opinion.
divF
@Major Major Major Major: Cross-referencing from the previous thread ? That’s not fair ! :-).
Besides, “techie scum”. We should try to find some more elaborate invective. A favorite of mine was Wallace Shawn calling someone an “ass-licking poseur”. Not particularly useful here, though – more something you would call an extreme hipster, another species that we seem to have a surfeit of around town.

@divF:
Country music is very popular in Sweden.
Neat story, they sang this live at the 2015 Polar Music Prize with Emmy Lou Harris in the audience.
Omnes Omnibus
@Major Major Major Major: Still not a fan.
Don’t be an asshole.

@Major Major Major Major: Which exhibit is it? So I can mark it for the record?
divF
@Major Major Major Major: Definitely confirms my first impression of an early-Tom-Waits vibe. Nice.

Steve Goodman, with my favorite homage to country music. AND he’s from Illinois! :-)

PostModern Jukebox’s cover of Wake Me Up.
Real fan of Robyn Adele Anderson She’s been the lead singer in a number of PMJ’s songs and she nails every one.

@Adam L Silverman: @Adam L Silverman: It would probably fit well in United States ex. rel. General Mayo v. Satan and His Staff.
@divF: I heartily recommend all fifteen or so albums, but the best one is The Sunset Tree. (Trigger warning: all of them)
divF
@Major Major Major Major: Judge Weber had way too much fun writing that opinion.

@Omnes Omnibus: Did you ever happen to express your interpretations of Machiavelli and Calvin from the (rather excellent) thread last night?
It seems I’m not alone in wanting to hear your take, if you care to share!
(And, yes, given your request, I have read Machiavelli [with awe — especially given the context and his personal circumstances when writing it], and been curious about why Calvin is revered by some [wondering if the source is more nutritive than popular interpretations], but am not deeply [or recently] familiar with his writings, first-hand).
If you did, and I missed it, a link is welcomed. If you didn’t, and music is more engaging at the moment, please do consider these topics in some other more relevant thread someday.
Both are hot-buttons of late (given the unhealthy and polarizing forces re-emerging) and greater insight would be useful.

@Adam L Silverman: Boo-urns
Omnes Omnibus
@BellyCat: Not something that I can do right now, Hit me again later. Okay?
Adam L Silverman
@Major Major Major Major: It had to be stated.
And with that, I’m to bed. You all have a nice night/morning.
Major Major Major Major
@Adam L Silverman: No it didn’t.

My girlfriends family (brother, niece and nephew) are in from Scotland and this week has been a chore to say the least. Lots of cooking for me on the grill and when not a different restaurant each night. We’re taking them to San Antonio for a 3 day weekend so tonight I’ve had to get familiar again as I haven’t been there as a tourist in over 10 years.
We’re staying on the Riverwalk and I have a few ideas for restaurants, etc. but any suggestions would be deeply appreciated! Thank god they are doing Fiesta Texas on Sunday so maybe I’ll get a few hours alone with my girl!
BellyCat
@Omnes Omnibus: Will do. Many thanks!

Big Lous pizza is JUST WRONG! ;0)

@Punchy:
As long as the 2016 Nazis also get knocked into the river and increasingly humiliated for the following 60 minutes, I’m game.
For the non-Midwesterners, it’s a reference to the famous attempt by the American Nazi Party to hold a rally in Skokie, the Chicago suburb that was home to the highest percentage of Holocaust survivors in the United States. They won their court case on 1st Amendment grounds and then chickened out of the actual rally.

@Davebo: El Mirador. It’s been 15 years or more, but went there once and went back again the same week. Reviews are still pretty positive.
Davebo
@seaboogie:
That’s great but believe it or not, we’re trying to avoid Mexican food. Doing that Monday night at my favorite tex mex joint back in Houston.

Did someone say Johnny Horton?

@Adam L Silverman:
Pfft. You call that a big pizza? This is a big pizza. They had to put a custom rack on top of their delivery cars.
It’s not very good pizza, but it’s definitely large.
seaboogie
@Davebo: Going to San Antonio and avoiding Mexican food makes *sense*? I did Lulu’s too on that trip, but El Mirador is a far cry from Lulu’s. Rather refined. I had something with duck, and went back for seconds….worth reconsidering. The fact that I remember the name of the place and the experience, ‘lo these many years, should tell you something.

Saw the Blues Brothers at the closing of the Winterland in SF, New Year’s Eve 1978. They played their movie before they came out for their set. Bill Graham rode a giant joint down from the balcony and hit the stage at the stroke of midnight as the Dead broke into “Sugar Magnolia”. They played until dawn and then Bill served breakfast to the crowd.

Adam, have you seen either of these Manafort Ukraine stories… guy is going to wish he stayed under his rock.
organized a protest where protesters threw rocks at US soldiers
And was conducting a covert propaganda campaign here in the states
Think this is why Manafort is being “repurposed” in the campaign.

@seaboogie: Also, nevermind. Did a search for best restos in SA, and this one didn’t show up…follow your nose….

@daverave: I saw the Blues Brothers open for Steve Martin at the Universal Amphitheater way back when. The Universal was still open air and Steve’s big bit was the arrow through his head. They jammed at the end with Steve and his banjo.

@srv: some friends of mine in 8th grade restaged the Battle Of Tarawa with lots of historically-questionable Black Cats and rubber cement. They filmed it on 8mm, but the reel is alas lost to history.

@Omnes Omnibus: take your own advice

@Punchy:
At least the Illinois Nazis in this are just a small gaggle of weirdos with 0% approval rating. (In a modern remake, they’d be the Westboro Baptist Church). If this were a Trump rally, half the screaming audience would be with the fascists.
@Mnemosyne:
I did not know that. I knew about the rally, and the First Amendment case, but I didn’t know they’d chickened out of actually doing it. Typical. (And I also didn’t know that the place where they were trying to march was the one with the highest concentration of Holocaust survivors. That explains both why they really wanted to march there and why the opposition was even higher than usual).
Adam L Silverman
@piratedan: I referenced my spousal unit? Since I don’t have one, have never had one, I’m not quite sure how I did that.
Adam L Silverman
@sukabi: I’ve seen both. I’ve asked a legal source what, if any, US laws might have been broken in the former. I’ve also seen a third article that delineates how he began planning the annexation of Crimea back to Russia for the oligarchs and Yanukovych back in 2006.

@Adam L Silverman: u referenced Roseanne Cash, so I referenced HER spousal unit…..

OK, this is hilarious.
