Now that’s a quality Bigfoot run.
RaflW
Oh boy. Trump fanning flames of racial resentment in MKE. What could possibly go wrong??
Gin & Tonic
I would rather poke my eyes out with a stick.
Adam L Silverman
When news breaks, we point and mock it! If it had not just been reported out that he wasn’t doing a rally, but a policy address instead to capitalize on the recent unrest in Milwaukee, I wouldn’t have put a post up. This was not anything expected this evening, especially given his interview this morning where he made it clear that he will not pivot or change how he campaigns. Given where this is, I would not be surprised to see Sheriff Clarke introduce him and whip up the crowd.
Adam L Silverman
Also, he’s running way behind schedule.
Adam L Silverman
@Gin & Tonic: We can arrange that. We are a full service blog.//

@Adam L Silverman: Probably had to have a plasma transfer. AKA The Thiel Treatment.
Adam L Silverman
@Jim, Foolish Literalist: This does not surprise me.
TaMara (HFG)
@Adam L Silverman: I’m probably going to repost the donation information during the day tomorrow as well, to get full exposure.
I’ll read the comments here to glean what garbage Trump is spewing, I can’t handle it first hand.
Adam L Silverman
@Corner Stone: Just a quick stop at the Elizabeth Bathory Spa and Wellness Center.
James E Powell
Why does the sheriff of Milwaukee County Wisconsin wear a cowboy hat?
MomSense
@Adam L Silverman:
He is truly horrible.
Adam L Silverman
@TaMara (HFG): I was thinking of going in and pinning it at the top of the site for a few days, but given the day Cole has had, it might kill him.

@James E Powell: The Confederacy of the Mind is everywhere now.

Trump’s understanding of pivoting is moving between the left and right teleprompters.
EDIT: I see Reince (aka David Paymer’s stand-in) Preibus is electrifying the crowd in the meantime.
Adam L Silverman
@James E Powell: I’m working up a post on Sheriff Clarke. After I saw him holding press conferences over the weekend declaring that law and order would be restored and laying blame for what is happening within Milwaukee. Sheriffs in Wisconsin are responsible for protecting the county line, providing bailiffs for the municipal courts, security for the municipal buildings, running the county jail, and, when contracted by smaller municipalities within their counties that do not have their own police forces, policing those areas within their counties. He has no jurisdiction for taking action within the City of Milwaukee. He is not in charge of the law enforcement response within the City of Milwaukee. He is not in the chain of command. Biggest law enforcement phony in the upper midwest.
Corner Stone
@Adam L Silverman: If there were an equivalent Jennifer Granholm Spa and Fine Dining Resort I may possibly sell my house to book some time there.
Villago Delenda Est
@James E Powell: Because he’s a shithead.
Adam L Silverman
@MomSense: Which one?
Adam L Silverman
@redshirt: In this case its a throwback to the traditional southern or western sheriff’s uniform, which includes a cowboy hat. Interestingly enough Sheriff Ward in Oregon was usually wearing a ball cap.
Adam L Silverman
@Corner Stone: I do not know. But it may be native Canadian’s only.

Trump speech highlights(predicted)
1. Support our police
2. Law and order must be maintained or we don’t have a country
3. Lecture the brown folk about personal responsibility and decry culture of lawlessness in the black community, tie into economic failure etc.
4. Watch Milwaukee burn tonight and tomorrow
Anoniminous
@James E Powell:
Because he has every John Wayne movie ever made on DVD and he likes to watch them late at night in his underwear while fondling his pistol?
Or, maybe what Villago Delenda Est said.

@redshirt: It’s everywhere. There are confederate sympathizers in Oregon now, as there were in 1860 (I live in Lane County, named in honor of Samuel Breckenridge’s running mate, Joseph Lane.)

Villago Delenda Est
@Adam L Silverman: He’ll give his surrogates something new to Drumpfsplain to the media tomorrow.

He’s working the 2nd Amendment Absolutist and white supremacist themes about the murder rate in Chicago being somehow President Obama’s fault.
Gravenstone
@RaflW: Yup. When I saw the Trumphasthinskin was gonna be in Milwaukee at this moment in time, I figured he’s just looking to fan the flames. I can’t bear to listen to the livestream, but I assume it’s more of the same. And thus I say, please continue, Trump. You poison the Republican Party every single day you speak or exist as their nominee.

@Gravenstone: i am confused. why the fuck would he be talking Scooter Libby and Dinesh DSouza? so fucked up.

So there’s a lot of delineating of problems, but other than the call out to Giuliani, there’s no actual policy proposal being made.
And he’s now shifted to the system is rigged against him.

Guy is nuts if he thinks black people want to join up with the KKK poster boy. He really thinks they’re stupid:
Keith P.
@Keith P.: I want to see this crowd that’s cheering all his “SAVE THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN COMMUNITY” BS. $20 says it’s all-white and eligible for coffee discounts at McD’s.
eric
@geg6: why yes. Yes he does.
Adam L Silverman
@Keith P.: My guess is that Ailes consulted on this speech and was the driver behind turning the rally into a “policy address”. The attack lines against Democrats betraying African Americans, the attack lines against Secretary Clinton, the attack lines on crime, and the call to heed the silent majority are all Ailes’ standards.

@Jim, Foolish Literalist: CNN Domestic has become as much a dumpster fire this year as the perennial Faux News. CNN International still has marginal credibility because much compete with the Beeb and Al Jazeera amongst others.

@geg6: Trump’s not trying to get AA votes. He’s trying to get white “I’m not a racist, but…” votes, esp white women.
Like Romney in 2012 going to NAACP and then later saying to white audiences, “Welp, I tried, but they still want handouts. But I didn’t say nigger, did I?”
Adam L Silverman
@Keith P.: @Adam L Silverman: Ailes definitely helped with this speech. Trump just broke out the wearing their opposition as a “badge of honor”. That’s definitely Ailes.
Betty Cracker

Trump is saying exactly what white GOP/FauxNews/Republican voters think about #BLM and Black people in America…
Who will be the first to ask if this speech will change Trump’s African American voter poll numbers for the better?
BlueDWarrior
I do honestly believe the other posters and commentators who say that his talking about the problems of the AfAm community is more to try and reassure white suburban Republicans who are falling off the wagon to hop back on.
The problem is that he always steps on a landmine (that someone else in the party laid down) and resets his position back to “Are we -really- sure that Donny isn’t actually a racist instead of just using echos of racist dog-whistles gone by?”
Adam L Silverman
@dmsilev: I should have warned you to turn off the YouTube chat. Its toxic.
Keith P.
Great, now Trump claims that crime is way higher than it is because people are too afraid to report it. Like unemployment. Like his poll numbers.
And he just said “Hillary’s vision of the future is the most pessimistic thing imaginable.” Surreal coming from Mad Don.
Anoniminous

amygdala
Well, there’s always Trump’s alleged doctor’s note.
My BS detector is flashing red. I’ve read a lot of doctor’s notes in my time, and describing a recent exam as “showing only positive results” and labs that were “astonishingly excellent.” Yeah… no.
Medical malarkey.
RedDirtGirl
@Keith P.: Brilliant, my good sir!
Trentrunner
Has anyone else through this campaign been imagining how easy it would be for a GOPer with roughly the same horrific policies but who is less of an in-your-face douchey asshole to be running and tying/beating the Dem nominee? There IS an appeal buried in all this racist horseshit that would be effective (and so MORE scary) enough to win an election.
Trump will probably lose, but the shit he’s stirring up and revealing will be with us for a long, long time. (As it has been…)
Miss Bianca
I come up for air from a writing jag and it’s TRUMP! giving a “policy speech”? Crafted by Roger Ailes? I don’t know if I can hack it. I’m just going to read the comments every once and in a while and thank God for all you concerned citizens willing to live-blog it for us!

Did he get a new combover artist? Hair is looking very short suddenly.
LOL! Now he’s bashing teachers and saying they are the African Americans’ nemy nut he’s going to get rid of the ACA and hire tougher cops and prosecutors, just exactly what the AA community wants!
eric
@dmsilev: seems like a federal problem. federal urban infrastructure planning….who knew?
Trentrunner
LOL could Manafort sign the agreement that Trump just proposed, i.e., no working for foreign governments 5 years after you leave public service?
eric
@geg6: He might just put Mississippi in fucking play.
dmsilev
Does Trump realize that he just disavowed his own campaign chair?
Adam L Silverman
Now he’s making policy proposals:
1) Secure the border, protect our workers, and improve wages. And not allow companies to leave the US.
2) Only invite people to join the US who support US values, accept the Constitution, and love the US.
3) Renegotiate trade deals. Scrap NAFTA. Withdraw from TTP. Stand up to China.
4) Give a massive tax cut to every worker and make it difficult/expensive for companies to outsource.
5) Reform regulations to keep jobs in the US and to lure jobs from offshore to the US.
6) School choice, merit pay for teacher, and end tenure.
7) Put students and parents first. Allow charter schools to thrive.
8) Support more police for communities. Appoint the best prosecutors and judges. Enforce all Federal laws. And break up the gangs everywhere in the US.
9) Get rid of the ACA. Repeal and replace.
10) Restore honor to US government to end corruption. Enforce all laws regarding protecting classified information. Forbid senior officials from trading favors from cash by preventing their spouses from making speeches for fees and forbid officials from doing so themselves for five years after leaving office.
There’s only one, sort of, law and order policy out of the list. And even that one is well outside the power of the President because of the Federal nature of the US system.
Keith P.
@Trentrunner: I was very worried about Ted Cruz. So many people just didn’t like him, but I really think he would have been a very formidable opponent for Clinton. He can spout off his beliefs off the top of his head, and they are *his* beliefs. And he’s a good debater, and he has a single spouse. And his hair isn’t completely ridiculous. And his mouth doesn’t look like a worn-out butthole.

@Adam L Silverman: Waiting for his meds to kick in?

@Miss Bianca: Co-sign all of this. Cannot bring myself to watch or listen to him. Reading what he emits is challenging enough.
geg6
And we finally see his GOTV strategy! No organization, just exhortation at rallies that more resemble cross burnings.
Trentrunner
@Keith P.: Yes, I was thinking of him, but he’s so personally oily and unlikable. I’m thinking of someone like Kasich or whoever.
I'mNotSureWhoIWantToBeYet
@amygdala: Well, at least he’s not wearing a defibrillator, unlike Hillary.
Isn’t it great that the federal government has solved all of the country’s problems so that the only thing left to talk about is whether a lump under Hillary’s jacket (under certain lighting, at a certain point during the day) is proof that she’s wearing a defibrillator. That, and her damn e-mails, also too, of course.
Fortunately, Donnie is in perfect health, is super intelligent, and rich, and everyone in the audience knows he’s the kindest, bravest, warmest, most wonderful human being they’ve ever known in their life.

Keith P.
@gogol’s wife: I’m still worried about him in 2020. He just came in at the wrong time (when the party is cleaving), but he can be in a good position to pick up the mantle when Trump fails. We dodged a bullet getting Palin (shit VP candidate), and Trump appears to be a lucky break (shittier candidate), but once they stop picking morons, it’ll get tough.
Here’s the audience. It’s younger in parts, but still all-white. Kudos to the MSNBC pundit for pointing that out immediately

@Adam L Silverman: I think we are going to see the crime figures play a big role going forward. Hillary will be ready for this at the debate(s) and I am not sure Trump will be able to say anything other than people are not reporting crime because………
gogol's wife
@eric:
But people won’t care about the statistics, because they have a gut feeling that crime is out of control since that’s all their local news covers.
Miss Bianca
@Adam L Silverman: Are they unhappy because he broke ranks with the Party, and you Just Don’t Do That? Or is there some other reason?
Adam L Silverman
@debbie: No. The DOJ is not going to prosecute either candidate within 90 days of the election. Moreover, they would have to be able to prove that Secretary Clinton intended to lie to Congress and to deceive the FBI at the same time. This is an impossibility. So they’ll acknowledge receipt of the referral, go through the procedural motions, and be done with it. Goodlatte and Chafetz are doing this in order to keep the email story and the Hillary is dishonest story in the news.
Gin & Tonic
@Adam L Silverman:
It’s amusing that the reason Manafort has been in the news this week is because of Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau. Yes, that is the body’s real, official name.

@gogol’s wife: but it is a checkable statistic. You can make U3 versus U6 type arguments for unemployment. But there is not similar statistic for unreported crimes.
randy khan
@Adam L Silverman: I’m with you. It’s utterly transparent and there’s no chance of a prosecution.
Adam L Silverman
@eric: Its a constant problem. The crime rate continues to go down, with the occasional, localized upticks. At the same time Americans are, by and large, convinced the crime rate goes up every year.
Adam L Silverman
@Miss Bianca: They’re unhappy because the base in Texas is all in for Trump. And the party leadership follows the base in Texas. They have to protect their phony baloney jobs.

I want to point out one important point. Trump called for peaceful regime change. Americans have never referred to their government as regimes. And we have never, even including the assassination of four presidents and the attempted assassinations of three more, and the assassination of at least one candidate, had a problem with peaceful transitions from one administration to the next. The use of this rhetoric is very significant and very, very problematic and extremely dangerous.

Trentrunner
@Adam L Silverman: LOL, well, Corey Lewandowski just lit a cross on fire to keep warm, so I assume “literally” is imminent…
gogol's wife
@Trentrunner:

Adam L Silverman
@Villago Delenda Est: Yep. He’s not quite calling for a putsch or a coup, but he’s winking and nudging that way. Especially by stating/claiming that every failed policy is the result of Secretary Clinton’s service in various positions. Even though she’s never administered anything but the State Department and even then the President sets American foreign policy and diplomatic policy.
Trentrunner
@gogol’s wife: Sorry: Don Lemon is not letting Trumpsters Kelly Anne Conway and Corey Lewandowski get away with what a great race speech this was. It got pretty heated between each of them and Lemon (who is AA).

I’m avoiding a Facebook argument with an in-law about Milwaukee because I can’t even imagine the cognitive dissonance of being a Black police officer right now, but I just want to ask him what he expected was going to happen after police departments all across the country proved that they can’t be trusted? Freddie Grey died in police custody and yet NOT A SINGLE POLICE OFFICER was at fault? WTF.
This isn’t just about Milwaukee, and cops really need to look at themselves before they’ll understand why people are so angry WITH THEM.
Adam L Silverman
@debbie: The DOJ’s standing policy is not to indict and/or prosecute those standing for election while an election is ongoing. This was the root driver of the Bush 43 Administration US Attorneys scandal when US Attorney Iglesias (of NM) and others refused to create prosecutions, often out of whole cloth, to swing elections to the GOP. Moreover, the DOJ tries, just as the Supreme Court does, to stay out of political disputes between the executive and legislative branches and the leadership thereof.
Adam L Silverman
@Gin & Tonic: Cool, let us know. I think Adam Serwer has something more explosive on this he’s preparing to report out. He was teasing it via twitter on Sunday night when word of the Times’ story broke.

So, other than Trump’s bigoted, stupid and batshit crazy supporters, who else is going to be convinced to vote for Mr. Agent Orange after the hateful nonsense he spewed tonight? Here’s the New Bullshit, Same as the Old Bullshit.
Adam L Silverman
@Mnemosyne: Coups do not have to be military.
Villago Delenda Est
@Adam L Silverman: Indeed, the Putsch that landed Hitler in Landsberg was paramilitary at most.
Mnemosyne
@Adam L Silverman:
Who’s going to support him? Most elected Republicans hate the guy, so he’ll have to find outside support. If the “constitutional sheriffs” think they can storm the Capitol, they’ll have a lot more time to think from inside a federal prison.
Adam L Silverman
@Villago Delenda Est: I do not think the US military leadership would tolerate a coup.
Anoniminous
@The Thin Black Duke:
No.
There’s only so many dumb and racist white males Trump appeals to and they already back him. He is losing very other demographic.
Adam L Silverman
@Mnemosyne: Again, I don’t think if he were to try one it would be successful. I’m not sure it would make it very far once the medicaire and medicaid paid for hoverarounds run out of battery power.
redshirt
Creme de Coup I can support.
jayjaybear
@Citizen Scientist: Mrs. Greenspan has been horrible since her husband quit the Fed. As if his not holding an active position makes it okay for her, as a supposed “journalist”, to throw off whatever thin claim to objectivity she had when he was actually working there.
KlareCole
Ann Navvaro is tearing it up on CNN!
Mnemosyne
@Adam L Silverman:
So far, the right-wing nut jobs have shown a willingness to show up for rallies and not much else as far as collective action goes. I will say I’m glad Cliven Bundy is already in jail because, if nothing else, I could see him preparing to be the next David Koresh.
Gin & Tonic
@jayjaybear: She turns 70 the week before the election. Does anybody know if NBC has a mandatory retirement age?
Frankensteinbeck
Ailes is clearly by far a more competent speechwriter and adviser than Trump has had before. Our greatest danger is Trump appearing to be less blitheringly incompetent, and holding onto enough dog whistles that ‘moderate’ Republicans don’t feel he’s exposing them.
Fortunately, nobody tells Trump what to do. It will be fun watching this crash and burn when Trump gets tired of working by Ailes’ rules.
eric
@Frankensteinbeck: or when people talk that Ailes is the real brains in the outfit. it will come….tick tock
Adam L Silverman
@Gin & Tonic: I think they’re going to just computer generate her forever.
redshirt
@Adam L Silverman: I hope Majel Baret is well enough recorded. She’s the voice of the future for me.
Anoniminous
Ailes can run a TV channel for retarded and/or senile old white people. Listening to this speech that he supposedly had a hand in it is 100% clear he doesn’t know dick about national and presidential politics. Trump was 11 points back in Wisconsin according to HuffPo Poll-of-Polls. This speech did nothing to change that.
Put Wisconsin in Clinton’s tally
Villago Delenda Est
@Adam L Silverman: Agreed. I think they would be VERY pissed at anyone attempting to to suborn the military.

@Frankensteinbeck: I admit, I’m somewhat worried that Ailes will pull something out of his bag of tricks and make Trump look almost, maybe not horrible. Then I remembered “the big cats can’t share a cage”. I don’t think Trump can be reigned in for very long. Still, I’m not going to be comfortable until Hillary wins the vote and then wins the electoral vote. Then I’ll spend the rest of her term worrying for her safety. Who knew? I thought Obama would be subject to assassination attempts, now I’m worried Hillary will be. The Secret Service must want Trump to STFU, because he’s making their job so much more difficult.
FlipYrWhig
@Trentrunner:
Rings an eentsy bit false from the guy who said at his own convention “I alone can fix it.”
FlipYrWhig
@Percysowner: Everything Fox News has ever done looks horrible to everyone who isn’t anxious, credulous, old, or all three. It’s a machine for selling gold bars and survival seeds to pensioners.
Mnemosyne
Just to have something more pleasant to look at, here’s Michelle Obama on the cover of Rachael Ray’s magazine.
I think Rach is going to miss her even more than we will!
dww44
@KlareCole: Context? I’m far away from a teevee and mostly don’t watch CNN anyways.
schrodinger's cat
@Mnemosyne: Link is broken.
Adam L Silverman
@FlipYrWhig: And it was originally created by Ailes to do one thing: make his case against the Clintons. He basically took an anti-Clinton campaign oppo concept and turned it into a cable “news” channel. He’s been building his oppo files on the Clintons for 20 years. That’s what he really brings to Trump’s campaign.
Adam L Silverman

@Adam L Silverman: That too. What it is not is a device that convinces people it’s legitimate. The few people I know who watch it are like college football fans: they want to know the latest scoop on why their team is going to win it all this year, especially against Traditional Rival State U., who suck, and who they hate.
Mnemosyne
@schrodinger’s cat:
That’s weird, it works on my iPad. Try this link — it’s a better quality image anyway.
Adam L Silverman
@FlipYrWhig: No argument there. It is definitely a closed ecosystem. What’s frightening is the number of conservatives that have now decided that Fox is just as liberal as CNN and the institutional GOP is no different that the Democrats. I’ve had numerous, otherwise rational seeming people, tell me that Paul Ryan is a liberal.

@Adam L Silverman:
G works in a public library and those same kind of people walk in every night. They look normal until they actually approach the desk and ask their burning question about why it is that air conditioning chillers are slowly poisoning them.
I’m actually getting a little worried about the guy who’s obsessed with Drew Barrymore and wondering if they need to make a police report so someone knows to keep an eye on him.

@dww44: Don Lemon’s panel tonight, reviewing Trump’s Wisconsin speech. Ann, a conservative commentator, responded to KelleyAnne Conway, a Trump supporter. Kelleyanne was criticizing the panel for judging Trump,(tsk tsk) and calling him names. Which no one had been doing. Ann shot back with a couple vigorous soliloquies stating she was happy to criticize him for calling her community rapists, that her brother was disabled, that she was a woman, and he had abused all three communities. And then she added a lot more, that was on target, sincere and devastatingly accurate. She silenced Kellyanne, & Corey Lewindiwski, former Trump campaign manager. My husband & I were crowing for Navvaro, not something we usually do.

@amygdala: But it’s the “first Tuesday” unless that falls on the 1st of the month, I which case it’s the second Tuesday.
Gonna have to wait until 11/8..

@Mnemosyne: Its like the guys that go to Colonial Williamsburg and ask the actor playing George Washington for advice in combatting the tyranny of the Obama Administration.

@Adam L Silverman:
Haven’t been involved for a long time but I’d bet that a few of the officers that I knew when I was serving would back one. They probably wouldn’t lead one and I’d bet few would follow them but they would be involved if there was one. Would a large percentage of the upper level officer corp stand by or stomp it out? I’d bet they wouldn’t stand by and let it happen. But I do think it would be messy. The real question is could one of any size even be organized.
Adam L Silverman
@KlareCole: She has not been amused this election season.
Peale
@Adam L Silverman: so basically, he is going to outlaw Clinton’s livelihood.
The Clinton’s should respond by opening a casino hotel and running it into bankruptcy.
Mnemosyne
@Adam L Silverman:
You almost don’t want to break the hearts of people like that by bringing up the Whiskey Rebellion and how Washington’s response to tax resisters was showing up with armed troops and hanging the leaders. Almost.
Omnes Omnibus
@Ruckus: Let’s say six or so officers in a battalion (I was army, I think that way.) would support a coup. that means that over 20-25 would not. In a situation like that, nothing happens. I sincerely doubt that that many officers would support a such a thing.
Miss Bianca
@Adam L Silverman: I…I can’t even…
@Mnemosyne: However, I’d *love* it if the actor playing Washington did do something just like that. I’d pay to set up that scenario.
ETA: I mean seriously, WTH??! Do they think they’re at a seance, or something? “In times like these, we want to ask our Founding Fathers for advice. Men like Washington, Madison, Jefferson. Not *them*, you understand. Just…men like them.”
Adam L Silverman
@Ruckus: These days the GOs/FOs wouldn’t tolerate it. Neither would the senior field grades. From the senior NCOs and warrants I’ve dealt with I don’t see them tolerating it either. We do a very good job of teaching civil-military relations with the emphasis on civilian control and that the military’s client/customer is the American people through/via the Constitution or the Constitution on behalf of the American people. A coup is outside of the Constitutional order and a military coup is outside of the Constitutional order and civilian control of the military. It would not be allowed to happen.
Adam L Silverman
@Peale: Trump has given a lot of speeches too. And he always gets paid and I guarantee that there aren’t any transcripts.

@Mnemosyne: As I indicated last night (and in a few other posts), I’m currently reading Saul Cornell’s history of the 2nd Amendment. He makes it very, very clear that both the Federalists and the anti-Federalists opposed the radical, rump, and rural anti-Federalists that he refers to as the Constitutional Populists. It was this splinter group that was agitating over the need to keep arms, not to be ready for service in the militia, but to be able to oppose the tyranny of all government beyond the most local, which they believed to be a threat to their radical understanding of individual Liberty. Cornell makes it clear that both the Federalists and anti-Federalists viewed this rump faction as nutty, dangerous, and wrong. The fight between the Federalists and the majority of anti-Federalists over the 2nd Amendment involved which level of government would control and provision the militia, as well as what the militia was, who should be a member of it, under what conditions could it be called forth, things like that. What we now refer to as 2nd Amendment Absolutism is the direct descendant of the Constitutional Populists.
Adam L Silverman
@Miss Bianca: Of course you can. You can do it!!!!

@Villago Delenda Est:
I think they would be VERY pissed at anyone attempting to to suborn the military.
Wouldn’t it be pretty to think so.
However: when I was in the Army, and probably when Cole was in the Army, we supposedly had a proud tradition of following the Geneva convention. No more My Lais was the story. I took a couple hours of training specifically on handling of captives, and treaty obligations. Torture was right out; we were told to disobey any such unlawful order.
And yet Cheney and W and Rumsfeld were able to create Gitmo and apparently had little problem convincing the military to go along with the abuses at Abu Ghraib and Bagram; I believe one Gen. Geoffrey Miller was eager to “Gitmo-ize” the treatment of captives in Iraq.
I conclude that the heart of darkness lives in all of us, and that we’re all good Germans, but don’t want to recognize that in ourselves. Milgram was right.
Omnes Omnibus
@joel hanes: I’ll step in again and back VDE. Some of my fellow officers were full on hard-core right wingers. Nevertheless, i trust that they would accept the result of any election. Further, if they were going to stage a coup, it would not be for Trump.
Villago Delenda Est
@Omnes Omnibus: This is why Drumpf has no idea what he’s playing with here. He thinks he has the military on his side. He’s a draft dodging fortunate son. At least among the officers, there is no traction there for him.
Omnes Omnibus
@Villago Delenda Est: They may vote for him. They sure as shit will not rebel for him. Anyone who thinks that is possible has no understanding of the military.
Villago Delenda Est
@Omnes Omnibus: Yup, you’re right. Votes, yes. Rallying behind him no matter how much he screams “unfair!” like a petulant three year old, no.
Omnes Omnibus
@Villago Delenda Est: You’ve met my 0-6 to O-8 folks. If not, I know them. No coup action. Ever.
joel hanes
@Omnes Omnibus:
would not be for Trump
Oh, I’m sure of that. Absolutely, as we say in California.
But some of the stuff that happened in W’s Excellent Adventures gives me pause, because I was just as sure that it Could Not Happen Not In My Army. And yet.

@Adam L Silverman:
“Regime Change Begins at Home” was a slogan from the anti-Iraq War rallies.
It strikes me that a lot of what Trump’s campaign is doing right now is modeled on the further-left opposition to George W. Bush, only it’s gone more mainstream and Obama and Hillary Clinton haven’t really done anything to justify it. Roger Stone’s FUD about a rigged election is taken directly from the left claims about Diebold rigging the 2004 election for Bush.

@jayjaybear:
I have given up on NBC news because they continue to allow Andrea Greenspan to tell me things I know “with my own eyes” are false. Somehow she and I can watch the same thing and she can come to completely different conclusions about what we both just saw.
She seems to not understand that commenting on something that was just broadcast and making shit up about it just proves that she makes shit up. NBC, you lost me. Now I’m a CBS watcher for TV news.
